The Landscapes of Italian Food - Local Development and Healthy Practices (Hardcover): Gregory Smith, Gilda Berruti The Landscapes of Italian Food - Local Development and Healthy Practices (Hardcover)
Gregory Smith, Gilda Berruti
R1,400 Discovery Miles 14 000 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The book examines contemporary food systems in Italy, paying particular attention to the landscape, innovative local practices and local cultural history. It illustrates the utility of the value chain concept in navigating the complexities of comparative advantage in an advanced market setting. It establishes the connection between the landscape and individual food practices, and how they have responded to the commodification of the agri-food system, maintaining a distinctive local character while ensuring development and a healthy diet. It explores how community gardens are now a consolidated part of Italian urban experience, as well as the multiple policy frameworks which govern these activities. The book then explores a wider range of food procurement channels, from food cooperatives to buying groups and institutional partnerships, including the strategies employed by large retail groups to respond to the growing environmental sensitivity of their customers. Multifunctional implications of antimafia activities involving social agriculture are also explored. Finally the book ends with a survey of European and domestic Italian policies aiming to protect and promote healthy food practices while preserving the integrity of the landscape. This is fascinating reading for anyone interested in quality food and the territory, as well as academic readers from such disparate disciplines as sociology, urban studies, anthropology, and Italian studies.

Gambling, Work and Leisure (Routledge Revivals) - A Study Across Three Areas (Hardcover): David Downes, D.M. Davies, M. E.... Gambling, Work and Leisure (Routledge Revivals) - A Study Across Three Areas (Hardcover)
David Downes, D.M. Davies, M. E. David, P. Stone
R4,215 Discovery Miles 42 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the legalisation of off-course cash betting in 1960, and the rise of varying forms of gambling, the British have come to be known as a nation of gamblers. Until this study was published in 1976, barely any evidence existed against which to assess the claim that gambling had become a major social problem. The authors present data drawn from area surveys carried out in Swansea, Sheffield, Wanstead and Woodford, and explore how well previous sociological theories of gambling agree with their findings, particular in connection with certain aspects of work and leisure. Examining different forms of gambling, including betting, bingo and gaming machines, the chapters consider how gambling choices vary between different social groups, and how much time and money is spent on them. With the internet making it easier than ever before to place bets, this title is especially relevant, and provides a systematic basis for an explanation of gambling in relation to social structure.

Stakeholder Involvement in Social Marketing - Challenges and Approaches to Engagement (Paperback): Kathy Knox, Krzysztof... Stakeholder Involvement in Social Marketing - Challenges and Approaches to Engagement (Paperback)
Kathy Knox, Krzysztof Kubacki, Sharyn Rundle-Thiele
R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book is the first to provide evidence-based experience to showcase how stakeholder management can be applied within social marketing programs, as well providing contemporary discussions of social marketing research. The book aims to bring practitioners and academics together to address the calls made by scholars to address inherent challenges involved in identifying, involving and prioritising different stakeholders in social marketing interventions. Through sharing real-world experience, the text aims to extend and synthesise current knowledge in the field and contribute to establishing stronger and long-lasting alliances with stakeholders involved in social marketing interventions with an aim of ensuring sustainable behavioural change. This book features a diverse series of case studies from different countries (including but not limited to Australia, Finland, India, Slovenia, the United Kingdom) conducted in various behaviour change contexts (including alcohol consumption, nutrition intake, and breast feeding). Leading international social marketing and social science scholars provide case studies on stakeholder involvement in an intervention or multiple interventions and elucidate relevant lessons to inform theoretical as well as practical implications for multi-stakeholder social marketing interventions. This volume will be of interest to researchers, advanced students, practitioners and policy makers in social marketing and health policy.

The Production of Hospice Space - Conceptualising the Space of Caring and Dying (Hardcover, New Ed): Sarah Mcgann The Production of Hospice Space - Conceptualising the Space of Caring and Dying (Hardcover, New Ed)
Sarah Mcgann
R4,344 Discovery Miles 43 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Challenging the widely held notion of a hospice as a building or a place, this book argues that it should instead be a philosophy of care. It proposes that the positive and negative impact that space can have in the pursuit of an ideal such as hospice care has previously been underestimated. Whether it be a purpose-built hospice, part of a hospital, a nursing home or within the home, a hospice is anchored by space and spatial practices, and these spatial practices are critical for a holistic approach to dying with dignity. Such spatial practices are understood as part of a broad architectural, social, conceptual and theoretical process. By linking health, social and architectural theory and establishing conceptual principles, this book defines 'hospice' as a philosophy that is underpinned by space and spatial practice. In putting forward the notion of 'hospice space', removed from the bounds of a specific building type, it suggests that hospice philosophy could and should be available within any setting of choice where the spatial practices support that philosophy, be it home, nursing home, hospice or 'hospice-friendly-hospitals'.

Reconstructing Medical Practice - Engagement, Professionalism and Critical Relationships in Health Care (Paperback, New Ed):... Reconstructing Medical Practice - Engagement, Professionalism and Critical Relationships in Health Care (Paperback, New Ed)
Christine Jorm
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reconstructing Medical Practice examines how doctors see health care and their place in it, why they remain in medicine and why they are limited in their ability to lead change in the current system. Doctors are beset by doubts and feel rejected by systems where they should be leaders - some see their role as 'flog[ging] a derelict system to get the last breath of workability out ... for their patients'. Others simply turn away. Rigorous studies carried out at large public teaching hospitals in Australia found that doctors were reluctant to increase safety in the wider health system, despite making every effort for their 'own' patients. Doctors' self-esteem was found to be delicate due to the uncertain nature of their work; colleagues provide the support doctors need to deliver good care. However, these essential relationships and their cherished connections with patients have disadvantages: reducing doctors' ability to admit to error. On top of this, senior doctors predict a future bereft of professional values - one where medicine is 'just a job'. While the loss of professional identity introduces new risks for patients and doctors, the repercussions of the more self-serving attitudes of younger doctors are unknown. Reconstructing Medical Practice concludes that regulation, despite its recent proliferation, is a clumsy and limited approach to ensuring good care. It presents original and much-needed ideas for ways to rebuild the critical relationship between doctors and the system. By better valuing communicative interactions and workplace relationships, safe and satisfying medical practice can be reconstructed.

Beyond Anitkabir: The Funerary Architecture of Ataturk - The Construction and Maintenance of National Memory (Hardcover, New... Beyond Anitkabir: The Funerary Architecture of Ataturk - The Construction and Maintenance of National Memory (Hardcover, New Ed)
Christopher S. Wilson
R4,494 Discovery Miles 44 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There have been five different settings that at one time or another have contained the dead body of Mustafa Kemal AtatA1/4rk, organizer of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923) and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Narrating the story of these different architectural constructions - the bedroom in DolmabahAe Palace, Istanbul, where he died; a temporary catafalque in this same palace; his funeral stage in Turkey's new capital Ankara; a temporary tomb in the Ankara Ethnographic Museum; and his permanent and monumental mausoleum in Ankara, known in Turkish as 'Anitkabir' (Memorial Tomb) - this book also describes and interprets the movement of AtatA1/4rk's body through the cities of Istanbul and Ankara and also the nation of Turkey to reach these destinations. It examines how each one of these locations - accidental, designed, temporary, permanent - has contributed in its own way to the construction of a Turkish national memory about AtatA1/4rk. Lastly, the two permanent constructions - the DolmabahAe Palace bedroom and Anitkabir - have changed in many ways since their first appearance in order to maintain this national memory. These changes are exposed to reveal a dynamic, rather than dull, impression of funerary architecture.

Developing Competencies for Recovery - Mastering Addiction, Living Well, and Doing Good (Paperback): Sandra Rasmussen Developing Competencies for Recovery - Mastering Addiction, Living Well, and Doing Good (Paperback)
Sandra Rasmussen
R960 Discovery Miles 9 600 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Developing Competencies for Recovery aims to help people struggling with addiction realize recovery by developing core competencies that will equip, enable, and empower them to master addiction, live well, and do good. Competencies are clusters of related knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that prepare a person to act effectively and reflect cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of learning. This book provides a cutting-edge guide to recovery by clearly depicting these core competencies in a manner that will prepare the reader with the ability to clearly understand and develop a course of action on how to manage recovery successfully. The first section of each chapter presents facts, concepts, principles, and theories about a particular competency, and it shares real stories about real people and their own recovery journeys. The following section suggests applications of the competency with questions, worksheets, exercises, and projects. In the final section, readers can evaluate their recovery work and competency development. Resources for recovery and references can be found at the end of the book. Behavioral health practitioners and instructors and students of addiction studies will find this book a best-practice template for recovery work.

Prostitution, Harm and Gender Inequality - Theory, Research and Policy (Hardcover, New Ed): Maddy Coy Prostitution, Harm and Gender Inequality - Theory, Research and Policy (Hardcover, New Ed)
Maddy Coy
R4,356 Discovery Miles 43 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Prostitution, Harm and Gender Inequality brings together international research exploring the range of gendered harms to women involved in prostitution and the consequences of growth of the sex industry for global gender relations. While there is an increasing amount of research and academic output on prostitution, the current focus is often on discussion and critique of policy frameworks, and contemporary debates over harm are largely limited to sex trafficking and sexual exploitation of children. Less attention is paid to questions of how the sex industry perpetuates notions of objectification and male entitlement with respect to sexual access to women's bodies, despite being key feminist concerns for several decades. This position has become effectively marginalized, but the global growth and industrialization of the sex industry requires a return to these questions. Through exploring gendered inequality and re-engaging with an understanding of prostitution as harmful with impacts on the self and body that are experienced as abusive but do not always constitute violence, this book introduces a range of research and thinking, while also drawing on existing literature to explore the consequences of prostitution for women in the sex industry and wider gender relations. These issues are discussed with regard to: coercion and recruitment, including trafficking; notions of male entitlement in accounts of men who buy sex; critical interrogations of agency and choice; legal and policy frameworks; and representations of prostitution in popular culture.

Stijn Geerinck
R3,975 Discovery Miles 39 750 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Reconstructing Identity After Brain Injury tells the remarkable story of Stijn Geerinck and his journey from road traffic accident to recovery. Stijn also explores the essential human characteristics of resilience, fighting spirit, emotionality, despair, vulnerability, hope, depression, optimism, anxiety, rationality, focus, anger and love, as he looks at the impact of his brain injury and resulting disfigurement on his masculine identity. Towards a Social Science of Drugs in Sport (Hardcover): Jason Mazanov Towards a Social Science of Drugs in Sport (Hardcover)
Jason Mazanov
R3,910 Discovery Miles 39 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The debate around the role of drugs in sport is vibrant. There is a wealth of evidence from the hard end of science, telling us how drugs work, how drug testing works, and how many athletes have fallen foul of the system. The evidence from social science is still building momentum. For example, what makes an athlete use a performance enhancing substance? "To win" simply fails to explain the drug use behaviour we see among athletes.

This book provides a foundation for anyone trying to understand the drugs in sport problem beyond the hard science by looking at the "people factor" from different perspectives. After building a case for the social science of drugs in sport, it is examined from the ethical, sociological, economic, legal and psychological points of view. The book concludes with a definitive statement about what researchers, policy makers, sports administrators, athletes and fans can do to achieve a social science of drugs in sport that puts people firmly in the centre of the debate.

This volume was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
