Self In The System - Expanding The Limits Of Family Therapy (Hardcover): Michael P. Nichols Self In The System - Expanding The Limits Of Family Therapy (Hardcover)
Michael P. Nichols
R3,990 Discovery Miles 39 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1988. This thought-provoking volume offers a constructive critical anal ysis of family therapy for its neglect of the self in the system, and provides a therapeutic approach to clinical problems that takes into account both individual and family dynamics. The author shows that by elevating the metaphor of the system to dogma, family therapy has lost sight of much of the richness and complicating influence of personal feeling, motivation, and conflict, resulting in a proliferation of esoteric, abstract theories and highly mechanistic, technical interventions. The Self in the System describes a different reality that is often overlooked: no matter how much their behavior is coordinated within the system, family members remain separate individuals with private hopes and ambitions, motives and expectations, quirks and foibles, and potentials for creative work. This book provides a unique approach that develops a better understanding of family members' individual experiences, and helps in enhancing their personal responsibility and ability to solve their own interactional problems within the family system. The approach, however, is not just another version of psychoanalytic family therapy, but rather one that utilizes the best tools of family therapy and the most useful ideas from individual psychology and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Chapters cover such important topics as finding the family and losing the self; the problem of change; working with interaction; the effective use of empathy; making assessments that include both the whole family system and the psychology of its members; interac tional psychodynamics; a practical guide to object relations theory; how to develop understanding; and working with resistance.

Waiting at the Gate - Creativity and Hope in the Nursing Home (Paperback): Susan L Sandel, David Johnson Waiting at the Gate - Creativity and Hope in the Nursing Home (Paperback)
Susan L Sandel, David Johnson
R1,167 Discovery Miles 11 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Here is the result of over ten years of hands-on clinical experience by two experts wha have worked with the elderly. The authors explore the contributions of the creative arts therapies, specifically movement and drama therapy, to the individual and communal welfare of residents in nursing homes. Waiting at the Gate: Creativity and Hope in the Nursing Home eloquently demonstrates how movement and drama therapy facilitate the preservation of life, of meaning, and of hope by seeking the beautiful and playful aspects of the self, and valuing humor, flexibility, and spontaneity in relationships with others. The authors show how these values challenge the "waiting to die" phenomenon of the custodial nursing home and offer lively alternatives to the resident in the new institution of the 1990s.

War Doctor - Surgery On The Front Line (Paperback): David Nott War Doctor - Surgery On The Front Line (Paperback)
David Nott 1
R299 R234 Discovery Miles 2 340 Save R65 (22%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

‘Brave, compassionate and inspiring – it left me in floods of tears’ Adam Kay, author of This Is Going to Hurt

For more than twenty-five years, David Nott has taken unpaid leave from his job as a general and vascular surgeon with the NHS to volunteer in some of the world’s most dangerous war zones. From Sarajevo under siege in 1993, to clandestine hospitals in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, he has carried out life-saving operations and field surgery in the most challenging conditions, and with none of the resources of a major London teaching hospital.

The conflicts he has worked in form a chronology of twenty-first-century combat: Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur, Congo, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Gaza and Syria. But he has also volunteered in areas blighted by natural disasters, such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal.

Driven both by compassion and passion, the desire to help others and the thrill of extreme personal danger, he is now widely acknowledged to be the most experienced trauma surgeon in the world. But as time went on, David Nott began to realize that flying into a catastrophe – whether war or natural disaster – was not enough. Doctors on the ground needed to learn how to treat the appalling injuries that war inflicts upon its victims. Since 2015, the foundation he set up with his wife, Elly, has disseminated the knowledge he has gained, training other doctors in the art of saving lives threatened by bombs and bullets.

War Doctor is his extraordinary story

Toxic Disruptions - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Urban India (Hardcover): Gauri S. Pathak Toxic Disruptions - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Urban India (Hardcover)
Gauri S. Pathak
R3,821 Discovery Miles 38 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a unique ethnographic account of women living with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in India. It examines how contaminated environments and political-economic changes render urban middle-class women in India vulnerable to PCOS, a condition which has the potential to disrupt conventional, normative feminine biographies of marriage and childbearing. The volume revolves around two main themes: how toxic landscapes, the endocrine disrupting chemicals suffusing them, and the political-economic environments related to them are linked to endocrine disorders such as PCOS; and how the biosocial disruptions caused by PCOS are both affecting women and reflective of changes in contemporary urban India. The author draws on anthropological fieldwork to investigate these connections through a fresh approach, combining a political ecological framework with perspectives from the anthropology of toxic exposures and health-environment systems. The first of its kind, this volume will be indispensable to students and researchers of anthropology, particularly medical anthropology, medical sociology, human geography, science and technology studies, medical humanities, health-environment systems, endocrine disorders, public health, and South Asian studies.

Midwives and Medical Men - A History of the Struggle for the Control of Childbirth (Hardcover): Jean Donnison Midwives and Medical Men - A History of the Struggle for the Control of Childbirth (Hardcover)
Jean Donnison
R2,785 Discovery Miles 27 850 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1977 and as a second edition in 1988, this book introduces the reader to the women at the top of the midwifery profession up until the 17th Century who attended the aristocracy and Royalty. The author shows how their successors were gradually driven out of the better paid work until in the middle of the 19th Century it appeared that attendance on childbearing women would inevitably become the male monopoly it has virtually become in North America. This downward trend was reversed, thanks to efforts to preserve for women the choice of female attendance in childbirth and also to the labour of philanthropists to improve maternity services to the poor. However, the drive for the institutionalization and mechanization of childbirth during the 20th Century as well as a chronic shortage of midwives, has once again shone a spotlight on the profession. This unique history of developments in midwifery will be of interest to students of medical politics, 19th Century social history, the sociology of the professions and gender studies.

Assisted Suicide and the European Convention on Human Rights (Hardcover): Stevie Martin Assisted Suicide and the European Convention on Human Rights (Hardcover)
Stevie Martin
R4,057 Discovery Miles 40 570 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Locating assisted suicide within the broader medical end-of-life context and drawing on the empirical data available from the increasing number of permissive jurisdictions, this book provides a novel examination of the human rights implications of the prohibition on assisted suicide in England and Wales and beyond. Assisted suicide is a contentious topic and one which has been the subject of judicial and academic debate internationally. The central objective of the book is to approach the question of the ban's compatibility with the European Convention on Human Rights afresh; freed from the constraints of the existing case law and its erroneous approach to the legal issues and selective reliance on empirical data. The book also examines the compatibility of the ban on assisted suicide with rights which have either been erroneously disregarded or not considered by either the domestic courts or the European Court of Human Rights. Having regard to human rights jurisprudence more broadly, including in the context of abortion, the research and analysis undertaken here demonstrates that the ban on assisted suicide violates the rights of a significant number of individuals to life, to freedom from torture or inhuman or degrading treatment and to private life. Such analysis does not depend on a strained or contrived approach to the rights at issue. Rather, the conclusions flow naturally from a coherent, logical application of the established principles governing those rights. While the focus of the book is the Suicide Act 1961, the conclusions reached have implications beyond England and Wales, including for the other devolved jurisdictions and international jurisdictions. Beyond courts and legislators, it will be a valuable resource for students of human rights and medical law, as well as medical and legal practitioners and academics working in human rights and end-of-life care.
