When someone is diagnosed with a serious illness, he or she is taking the first step on a challenging and confusing journey. For many, it is as if they are traveling alone to someplace entirely new, with only faded directions back to their old lives. Often, even their loved ones can only guess at what they must be experiencing. Michael Stein, M.D., uses the stories of his own patients to consider the personal narrative of sickness. Beautifully written and keenly insightful, "The Lonely Patient" is a valuable book for patients and their caregivers as well as a probing inquiry into this universal experience.
Carolyn Jourdan had it all: the Mercedes Benz, the fancy soirees,
the best clothes. She moved in the most exclusive circles in
Washington, D.C., rubbed elbows with big politicians, and worked on
Capitol Hill. As far as she was concerned, she was changing the
world.

'Powerful, humane and wise' JULIA SAMUEL 'Everyone should read it' NIGELLA LAWSON 'Beautiful ... This is a book for everyone. You feel held by it' PHILIPPA PERRY Most of us have a conversation we're avoiding. From the bestselling author of With the End in Mind, this is a book about the conversations that matter and how to have them better - more honestly, more confidently and without regret. A child coming out to their parent. A family losing someone to terminal illness. A friend noticing the first signs of someone's dementia. A careers advisor and a teenager with radically different perspectives. There are moments when we must talk, listen and be there for one another. Why do we so often come away from those times feeling like we could have done more, or should have been braver in the face of discomfort? Why do we skirt the conversations that might matter most? By bringing together stories with a lifetime's experience working in medicine and the newest psychology, Mannix offers lessons for how we can better speak our mind and help when others need to. Kathryn Mannix's 'With the End in Mind' was a Sunday Times bestseller the weeks ending 6 January 2018, 13 January 2018 and 3 February 2018.

Not Fade Away
- A Short Life Well Lived
(Paperback, Perennial ed)
Laurence Shames, Peter Barton
|
|
Ships in 10 - 15 working days
Some people are born to lead and destined to teach by the example of living life to the fullest, and facing death with uncommon honesty and courage. Peter Barton was that kind of person.
Driven by the ideals that sparked a generation, he became an overachieving Everyman, a risk-taker who showed others what was possible. Then, in the prime of his life -- hugely successful, happily married, and the father of three children -- Peter faced the greatest of all challenges. Diagnosed with cancer, he began a journey that was not only frightening and appalling but also full of wonder and discovery.
With unflinching candor and even surprising humor, Not Fade Away finds meaning and solace in Peter's confrontation with mortality. Celebrating life as it dares to stare down death, Peter's story addresses universal hopes and fears, and redefines the quietly heroic tasks of seeking clarity in the midst of pain, of breaking through to personal faith, and of achieving peace after bold and sincere questioning.

Direct Red
- A Surgeon's View of Her Life-Or-Death Profession
(Paperback)
Gabriel Weston
|
|
Ships in 10 - 15 working days
In this powerful and sometimes shocking account, a surgeon reveals
her experience of hospital life with rare frankness.
In her mid-twenties, Gabriel Weston - an arts graduate with no
scientific qualification beyond high school-level biology - decided
to become a surgeon. She enrolled at night school, then went
through many years of medical school and surgical training.
Now in her late thirties, she has achieved her ambition and is
working as a surgeon in a British hospital. "But I have never quite
managed to shake off the feeling that I am an imposter,"she says.
"Even when operating, it sometimes seems like I am on the outside
looking in."
Direct Red is the result of those observations. It is a superbly
written, startlingly raw account of her experience of life in a
hospital. All her own doubts, mistakes, and incongruous triumphs
are faithfully recorded. It is also a revealing and at times
chilling account of what she sees around her. The world of surgery
is secret and closed - or was until now.
Excerpt
I knew that this man needed to be opened up immediately. I phoned
the on-call consultant, offering to meet him in theatre.
"Not so fast," he objected. "You youngsters are always in such a
hurry." When he finally did concede that we needed to go to
theatre, he picked up a coffee on the way.
Physiology forced pace on the situation: once we cut the man open,
we were confronted with the sight of the hollow cavern of the
patient's abdomen filling with blood as quickly as a basin fills
with water.
This consultant did not have a clue what to do; didn't know the
simplest emergency measures. He dressed his incompetence in a
mannered slowness of action. It took him almost an hour to admit he
wasn't coping, at which point he shouted at the scrub nurse: "Get
me another surgeon! Any surgeon!"
The night taught me the paramount value of a quick response.

Image synthesis across and within medical imaging modalities is an active area of research with broad applications in radiology and radiation oncology. This book covers the principles and methods of medical image synthesis, along with state-of-the-art research. First, various traditional non-learning-based, traditional machine-learning-based, and recent deep-learning-based medical image synthesis methods are reviewed. Third, the clinical usages of medical image synthesis, such as treatment planning and image-guided adaptive radiotherapy, are discussed. Last, the limitations and current challenges of various medical synthesis applications are explored, along with future trends and potential solutions to solve these difficulties. The benefits of medical image synthesis have sparked growing interest in a number of advanced clinical applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-only radiation therapy treatment planning and positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI scanning. Informed consent is the legal instrument that purports to protect an individual's autonomy and defends against medical arbitrariness. Informed Consent and Health highlights that possession of complete information about all relevant aspects of a proposed treatment is integral to the ability of a patient to make an informed choice. With patient choice at both legislative and judicial levels rising to greater levels of prominence, this timely book examines how the tensions between the rights of patients to make choices and the duties of doctors to provide health care are managed. This illuminating book investigates our evolving understanding of informed consent from a range of comparative and international perspectives, demonstrating the diversity of its interpretations around the world. Chapters offer a nuanced analysis of the problems that impede the understanding and implementation of the concept of informed consent and explore the contemporary challenges that continue to hinder both the patient and the medical community.
