A comprehensive tour d'horizon of the debate on the environment and security, focusing on the various policy options for building peace and preventing environmental conflict. Experts from the areas survey the key environmental challenges in Eastern and Central European states and those of the former Soviet Union, extending the debate to such regions as the Balkans, the Black Sea and Central Europe. This is the first time such extensive case study research has been reported for these regions. Both practical and theoretical approaches to the debate are presented, within a multi-disciplinary framework, the contributors ranging from academic experts involved with peace and conflict research to actual policy makers active in the fields of environmental and security policy. Readership: Experts already working in the relevant disciplines, both academic and governmental, as well as those seeking an introduction to the various policy fields. A graduate-level study text, excellent survey for policy makers and an academic contribution to ongoing studies.
This work evaluates the merits of a widely-used approach to natural resource management, participatory action research (PAR), an approach to resource management that strives to link researchers with farmers and other local residents whose lives are effected by long-range conservation programmes. The authors begin the book with the history of PAR, and then use a variety of case studies that chronicle sustainable development efforts in Brazil. They evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these efforts and suggest specific ways to improve on future PAR efforts.
This text contains the proceedings of the Workshop on The Transfer of Radionuclides in Natural and Semi-Natural Environments, held at the Villa Manin, Passariano (Udine), Italy, 11-15 September 1989.
In 1992 the Centre of Environmental Science (CML) at Leiden
University, The Netherlands, published a Guide on Environmental
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Many copies of this guide
have been sold all over the world, setting the standard for a long
time.
Illustrated by the author to give a sense of the spaces discussed. Clinical examples throughout. Academically rigorous as well as relevant to professionals.
The spellbinding new book by the prizewinning writer Kapka Kassabova
tells the story of her time with the last moving pastoralists in
Europe: a gripping portrayal of human-animal interdependence, and a
plea for a different way of living.
Modern biotechnology - the controversial manipulation of genes in living organisms - has far-reaching implications for agriculture, human health, trade and the environment. Against the odds, an international treaty governing biosafety and trade in biotechnology was adopted in 2000. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety of the Convention on Biological Diversity deals with one of the most important and challenging issues thrown up by developments in biotechnology. This volume is a comprehensive review of the protocol and the process that led to its adoption. It includes contributions from many of the key players involved and analyses the commercial and political interests at stake, the operations and implications of the protocol, and prospects for the future.
This book is a collection of papers presented at the 'Forum "Math-for-Industry" 2016 ' (FMfl2016), held at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, on November 21-23, 2016. The theme for this unique and important event was "Agriculture as a Metaphor for Creativity in All Human Endeavors", and it brought together leading international mathematicians and active researchers from universities and industry to discuss current challenging topics and to promote interactive collaborations between mathematics and industry. The success of agricultural practice relies fundamentally on its interconnections with and dependence on biology and the environment. Both play essential roles, including the biological adaption to cope with environmental challenges of biotic and abiotic stress and global warming. The book highlights the development of mathematics within this framework that successful agricultural practice depends upon and exploits.
Environmental and Architectural Psychology: The Basics is a jargon-free and accessible introduction to the relationship between people and their natural and built environment. Exploring everything from the effectiveness of open plan offices to how people respond to life-threatening disasters, the book addresses issues around sustainability, climate change, and behaviour, and is grounded in theory and ideas drawn from psychology, geography, and architecture. Author Ian Donald introduces both the theoretical underpinnings and the applications of environment-behaviour research to solving real world problems, encouraging readers to reflect on the role of design and policy in shaping the environments in which they live and work. With chapters considering the impact of environment on identity, wellbeing, crime, and spatial behaviour, Donald shows us not only how people shape and affect the environment, but also in turn how the environment shapes and affects people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Addressing some of the most important questions of our time, including how behaviour drives climate change, and what we can do about it, this is the ideal book for anyone interested in the interactions between architecture, the environment, and psychology.
* Exposes the contradictions of pursuing environmental and social goals while maximizing profit* Illuminating case studies of how corporations deal with the dilemmas involved* Develops a new management model Corporations are often blamed for a significant amount of environmental destruction and many are looking for new ways of managing environmental impacts and pursuing "green" markets. This "greening" of the corporations is riddled with contradictions, which Peter Robbins exposes. Analyzing the approaches of four major companies - ARCO Chemicals, Ben & Jerry's, Shell, and The Body Shop - he identifies common approaches and develops a management model to resolve them and combine environmental and business objectives.
An exploration of the relationship between river behaviour and environmental change. The research involves a wide range of disciplines including geomorphology, geophysics, archaeology, palaeoecology, engineering and planning.
Delivering a synthesis of almost one hundred and fifty years of
research into the Jordan Rift Valley, this genuinely comprehensive
text presents a model explaining the tectonic evolution of this
part of the Syrian-African Rift Valley, which may affect opinions
regarding the geotectonic pattern of the entire western Levant.
* Hugely topical book, considering terrorist attacks on structures and infrastructures. * Brings novel ideas to researchers and engineers in dynamic analysis of structures under combined actions of impact and blast loads. * Presents practical discussions in finite element modeling and numerical analysis of different structures under extreme loads using high-fidelity software which can be very useful for students. * Contains comprehensive state-of-the-art reviews on the performance of structures under extreme loads which can be very helpful for junior researchers who are beginners in impact and blast engineering. * Presents novel damage indices for different structural members under extreme loads that can be promoted to practical instructions to be experimentally conducted in structural engineering laboratories and academic environments.
Few people have made greater contributions to protecting and improving the environment than the scientist, teacher, activist Dr. Barry Commoner. For half a century, Dr. Commoner has been an international leader in the environmental movement. On the occasion of his eightieth birthday, a symposium was held at which invited speakers discussed his contributions to a wide range of environmental issues. This book, collecting many of the invited papers, provides fascinating insights into the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most influential scientists and social activists. Chapters contributed by other activists, scientists, and scholars including Ralph Nader, Tony Mazzocchi and Peter Montague cover many of Dr. Commoner's major contributions.
Miscanthus is a promising non-food crop yielding high quality lignocellulosic material which can be used in a number of ways, including energy and fibre production, thatching, and industrial use. This book encompasses the results and recommendations arising from extensive trials and experiments carried out by the leading European research organisations and institutions in the field. Much of the research was performed under the auspices of the Miscanthus Productivity Network, established under European Union's Directorate General for Agriculture (DG VI). This book presents expert guidance to growth conditions and breeding of Miscanthus, potential productivity and economics, environmental aspects, and harvesting, storage and utilisation. A guide to this increasingly important subject is long overdue and will be welcomed by all those involved in biomass production and renewable energies, or assessing the potential of Miscanthus as a non-food crop.
Engineers who play a major role in hazardous waste management, must have full understanding of technical, regulatory, economic, permitting, institutional and public policy issues. This reference book provides this information, providing data and techniques that can be applied to analyzing, designing and developing effective hazardous waste management solutions.
This book tackles a largely neglected topic: small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their environmental impact. Over 90% of all firms are SMEs. Their importance to the health of national and international economies is recognized. But what of their environmental impact? Individually, this may be small but, collectively, they pose a huge and largely unregulated threat to national and indeed the global environment. There have been many failed attempts to engage SMEs in environmental stewardship. Why is this? And where are the success stories needed to set best-practice examples? Environmental protection is widely touted as being a win-win scenario for business with economic spin-offs in terms of energy and waste reduction quickly producing payback for capital expenditures. Why is the "good environmental management equals good business management" message not getting through? In Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and the Environment Dr Ruth Hillary brings together an outstanding international collection of experts from government, international and national support agencies, academics and the business community to present arguments about the key environmental business imperatives facing the small-firm sector. The book is divided into four sections:Attitudes and Perceptions of Small Firms to the Environment and SustainabilityEnvironmental Management in the Smaller FirmPractical Strategies for Reaching SMEsCase Studies from around the World. In these sections, the book examines the threats - such as trade, supply chain issues and legislative compliance - but is also solution-oriented, with considerable discussion of the management tools smaller firms can use to improve their environmental performance. It aims to provide practical strategies for smaller firms and to that end includes a range of informative case studies from around the world. Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and the Environment is the most comprehensive book on the subject available and will prove invaluable not only to SMEs themselves, seeking to understand a rapidly changing world, but to consultants and small-business advisors, local and central government and to all those in academia looking for ways to improve the environmental performance of small businesses. |
