Government, Innovation and Technology Policy - An International Comparative Analysis (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Sunil... Government, Innovation and Technology Policy - An International Comparative Analysis (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Sunil Mani
R4,126 Discovery Miles 41 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This unique book offers a comprehensive analysis of the changing role of government with respect to domestic technology development in eight countries in both the developed and the developing world. The author distinguishes between those countries which can be classed as creators of new technologies (Japan, Korea and Israel) and those which possess the potential to create new technologies (Singapore, Malaysia, India, South Africa and Brazil). The author details the fiscal and non-fiscal policy measures each country employs to stimulate investments in R&D in the enterprise sector. He finds that, for financial instruments such as tax incentives and research grants to succeed, a strong emphasis also needs to be placed on non-fiscal policy measures. The most important of these is human resource development which is emphasised as an integral component of successful innovation policy. The book is written in a manner which allows the comparison of results between each country. Government, Innovation and Technology Policy will be a valuable text for governments, NGOs and multilateral institutions interested in the practicalities of promoting innovation at the enterprise level. It will also be useful supplementary reading for scholars and students of the theory and practice of innovation policy.

Unwired - Gaining Control over Addictive Technologies (Hardcover): Gaia Bernstein Unwired - Gaining Control over Addictive Technologies (Hardcover)
Gaia Bernstein
R620 R505 Discovery Miles 5 050 Save R115 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Our society has a technology problem. Many want to disconnect from screens but can't help themselves. These days we spend more time online than ever. Some turn to self-help-measures to limit their usage, yet repeatedly fail, while parents feel particularly powerless to help their children. Unwired: Gaining Control over Addictive Technologies shows us a way out. Rather than blaming users, the book shatters the illusion that we autonomously choose how to spend our time online. It shifts the moral responsibility and accountability for solutions to corporations. Drawing lessons from the tobacco and food industries, the book demonstrates why government regulation is necessary to curb technology addiction. It describes a grassroots movement already in action across courts and legislative halls. Groundbreaking and urgent, Unwired provides a blueprint to develop this movement for change, to one that will allow us to finally gain control.

Technology, Governance and Respect for the Law - Pictures at an Exhibition (Hardcover): Roger Brownsword Technology, Governance and Respect for the Law - Pictures at an Exhibition (Hardcover)
Roger Brownsword
R4,142 Discovery Miles 41 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the context of the technological disruption of law and, in particular, the prospect of governance by machines, this book reconsiders the demand that we should respect the law, simply because it is the law. What does 'the law' need to look like to justify our respect? Responding to this question, the book takes the form of a dialectic between, on the one side, the promise of the prospectus for law and, on the other, the discontent provoked by the performance of law in practice; this is followed by a synthesis. Four pictures of law are considered: two are traditional pictures - law as order and law as just order; and two are prompted by the technological disruption of law - law as governance by machines and law as self-governance by humans. These pictures are tested in five performance areas: contract law, criminal law, biolaw, information law, and constitutional law. The synthesis, revealing the complexity of the demand for respect, highlights three particular points. First, the only prospectus for law that clearly commands respect is one that is committed to protecting the global commons (the preconditions for humans to form their own communities with their own forms of governance); second, any form of governance by humans will invite reservations and push-back against the demand for respect; and, third, governance by machines is not so much a superior form of governance as a radically different form in which questions about respect are redundant. This book will appeal to scholars and students with interests in the broad and burgeoning field of law, regulation and technology, as well as to legal theorists, practitioners, and others interested in the impact of new technology on law.

Posthuman Property and Law - Commodification and Control through Information, Smart Spaces and Artificial Intelligence... Posthuman Property and Law - Commodification and Control through Information, Smart Spaces and Artificial Intelligence (Hardcover)
Jannice Kall
R4,130 Discovery Miles 41 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyses the phenomenon of digitally mediated property and considers how it problematises the boundary between human and nonhuman actors. The book addresses the increasingly porous border between personhood and property in digitized settings and considers how the increased commodification of knowledge makes visible a rupture in the liberal concept of the property owning, free, person. Engaging with the latest work in posthumanist and new materialist theory, it shows, how property as a concept as well as a means for control, changes fundamentally under advanced capitalism. Such change is exemplified by the way in which data, as an object of commodification, is extracted from human activities yet is also directly used to affectively control - or nudge - humans. Taking up a range of human engagements with digital platforms and coded architectures, as well as the circulation of affects through practices of artificial intelligence that are employed to shape behaviour, the book argues that property now needs to be understood according to an ecology of human as well as nonhuman actors. The idea of posthuman property, then, offers both a means to critique property control through digital technologies, as well as to move beyond the notion of the self-owning, object-owning, human. Engaging the most challenging contemporary technological developments, this book will appeal to researchers in the areas of Law and Technology, Legal Theory, Intellectual Property Law, Legal Philosophy, Sociology of Law, Sociology, and Media Studies.

Communications Skills for Project Managers (Paperback, Special Ed.): G. Campbell Communications Skills for Project Managers (Paperback, Special Ed.)
G. Campbell
R366 Discovery Miles 3 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

According to the Project Management Institute, over 80 percent of a project manager's job is communication--yet most project management books hardly discuss it. Certified project management professional G. Campbell explains how to ensure every component of a project is understood by the people responsible for execution to drive your project to completion and success. Communications Skills for Project Managers does this by focusing on communication skills such as how to: keep those on the project team--as well as upper management--involved and informed; establish a plan for communication; effectively present to stakeholders; compete with other initiatives within the organization; convey reasons for change; and more. Even a project that is brought in on time and on budget can be considered a failure if those outside the project team weren't kept informed about progress and goals. This important guide provides practical advice and strategies for overcoming shifting organizational priorities, constantly evolving expectations, and leadership turnover through the power of clear communication to consistently produce results.

Philanthropy and the Future of Science and Technology (Paperback): Evan S. Michelson Philanthropy and the Future of Science and Technology (Paperback)
Evan S. Michelson
R1,290 Discovery Miles 12 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An increasingly important and often overlooked issue in science and technology policy is recognizing the role that philanthropies play in setting the direction of research. In an era where public and private resources for science are strained, the practices that foundations adopt to advance basic and applied research needs to be better understood. This first-of-its-kind study provides a detailed assessment of the current state of science philanthropy. This examination is particularly timely, given that science philanthropies will have an increasingly important and outsized role to play in advancing responsible innovation and in shaping how research is conducted. Philanthropy and the Future of Science and Technology surveys the landscape of contemporary philanthropic involvement in science and technology by combining theoretical insights drawn from the responsible research and innovation (RRI) framework with empirical analysis investigating an array of detailed examples and case studies. Insights from interviews conducted with foundation representatives, scholars, and practitioners from a variety of sectors add real-world perspective. A wide range of philanthropic interventions are explored, focusing on support for individuals, institutions, and networks, with attention paid to the role that science philanthropies play in helping to establish and coordinate multi-sectoral funding partnerships. Novel approaches to science philanthropy are also considered, including the emergence of crowdfunding and the development of new institutional mechanisms to advance scientific research. The discussion concludes with an imaginative look into the future, outlining a series of lessons learned that can guide how new and established science philanthropies operate and envisioning alternative scenarios for the future that can inform how science philanthropy progresses over the coming decades. This book offers a major contribution to the advancement of philanthropic investment in science and technology. Thus, it will be of considerable interest to researchers and students in public policy, public administration, political science, science and technology studies, sociology of science, and related disciplines.

Due to the unapparelled rise of this in-demand field, very few in the role of a project manager have the practical tools needed to successfully navigate the politics of today's corporate world. To ensure projects get completed on time and on budget, project managers need more than just technical skills--they need the right communication skills to succeed. Filled with helpful real-world examples, Project Management That Works equips project managers for success by teaching them how to: communicate with their teams as well as stakeholders; get their teams to function well; run fewer and more productive meetings; turn around failing projects; utilize data properly to make emotional conversations unemotional; and know when a project is really done. While many of project managers know how to plan a successful project in theory, Project Management That Works helps readers address the real challenges--both organizational and interpersonal--that keep projects from completion so they can accomplish their goals.

Carl Schmitt and The Buribunks - Technology, Law, Literature (Hardcover): Edwin Bikundo, Kieran Tranter Carl Schmitt and The Buribunks - Technology, Law, Literature (Hardcover)
Edwin Bikundo, Kieran Tranter
R4,153 Discovery Miles 41 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1918 a young Carl Schmitt published a short satirical fiction entitled The Buribunks. He imagined a future society of beings who consistently wrote and disseminated their personal diaries. Schmitt would go on to become the infamous philosopher of the exception and for a while the 'Crown Jurist of the Third Reich'. The Buribunks - ironically for beings that lived only for self-memorialisation - has been mostly lost to history. However, the digital realm, with its emphasis on the informatic traces generated by human doing, and the continual interest in Schmitt's work to explain and criticise contemporary constellations of power, suggests that The Buribunks is a text whose epoch has come. This volume includes the first full translation into English of The Buribunks and a selection of critical essays on the text, its meanings in the digital present, its playing with and criticism of the literary form, and its place within Schmitt's life and work. The Buribunks and the essays provide a complex, critical and provocative invitation to reimagine the relations between the human and their imprint and legacy within archives and repositories. There is a fundamental exploration of what it means to be a being intensely aware of 'writing itself'. This is not just a volume for critical lawyers, literary scholars and the Schmitt literati. It is a volume that challenges a broad range of disciplines, from philosophy to critical data studies, to reflect on the digital present and its assembled and curated beings. It is a volume that provides a set of fantastically located concepts, images and histories that traverse ideas and practices, play and politics, power and possibility.
