The Role of Trade Literature in Sci-Tech Libraries (Hardcover): Ellis Mount The Role of Trade Literature in Sci-Tech Libraries (Hardcover)
Ellis Mount
R1,941 Discovery Miles 19 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, first published in 1990, examines the relationship between sci-tech materials and trade literature, commonly called manufacturers' catalogues. Because very little has been published about the value and nature of trade literature in regard to sci-tech libraries, this volume is important in informing librarians about a little-known segment of the larger picture of sci-tech information sources, thus adding to the value of their services to their clients. It addresses the problems of handling sci-tech trade literature in a corporate technical library, a large public library, and a government library devoted to American history. Experts offer practical advice on selecting and organizing trade literature and on managing the growth and extent of a collection of trade literature. They discuss modern literature and older publications, which often have great historical value. Libraries that collect both old and new materials are identified, as are publishers of trade literature. The book also focuses on how a publisher of classic trade literature views its role.

The Role of Conference Literature in Sci-Tech Libraries (Hardcover): Ellis Mount The Role of Conference Literature in Sci-Tech Libraries (Hardcover)
Ellis Mount
R1,943 Discovery Miles 19 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most librarians working with sci-tech collections are fully aware of the importance of conference papers and proceedings, which has long played a major role in keeping professionals informed of the latest developments in their field. In this book, first published in 1989, responsible executives from several publishers of conference literature have joined with a number of sci-tech librarians to discuss the nature and value of conference literature in sci-tech libraries. A commercial publisher discusses the difficulties in editing a set of conference papers in a book, while producers of indexing/abstracting tools describe their selection methods, retrieval services, and general outlook on conference materials. In addition, sci-tech librarians address the problems of accessing, citing, and locating conference literature and explore the many aspects of the cataloguing of conference publications.

Role of Translations in Sci-Tech Libraries (Hardcover): Ellis Mount Role of Translations in Sci-Tech Libraries (Hardcover)
Ellis Mount
R2,727 Discovery Miles 27 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, first published in 1983, examines translation sources and their activities, as well as ways in which librarians can become aware of what has been translated, and obtain copies. The sci-tech literature of the world reflects the international nature of its sources, and is published in many languages. There are many avenues available for obtaining translations of such materials, and this book is devoted to a review of these sources and their activities.

Sci-Tech Libraries of the Future (Hardcover): Cynthia Steinke Sci-Tech Libraries of the Future (Hardcover)
Cynthia Steinke
R2,163 Discovery Miles 21 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What will future sci-tech libraries be like? Who will be the key players? In this insightful volume, first published in 1992, leaders in sci-tech librarianship reflect on their years in the profession and predict how the sci-tech library will look in ten years. It takes a close look at the revolution in the communication of scientific information and how technology has transformed the process of knowledge delivery and acquisitions. It prepares libraries to react to new channels of scholarly communication that in the future may challenge the viability of the research library. Most importantly, it emphasizes how the rapid pace of change in science, communication, and computers has pushed libraries to aggressively seek to become central to the knowledge formation and transfer process - just to survive. These provocative chapters reveal how sci-tech librarians need to work with scientists and engineers to understand their changing information needs and to participate in the planning and development of new information systems. This book examines all areas of the scientific process that will be affected by change: the way research is conducted, communicated, transferred, stored, and delivered. The changes discussed in this book encompass researchers, librarians, information managers, publishers, and users. Some of the important topics discussed include an in-depth analysis of the information needs of science and engineering and how to best develop the electronic means to meet them; leadership challenges in the future electronic, computer, or virtual library; concern over the quality of information services for scientists delivered by non-scientist librarians; a ten-year prediction for sci-tech librarians and sci-tech publishers; the science library building of the future; the impact of increasingly interdisciplinary scientific research; and the effect of federal policy on sci-tech libraries.

Theory and Practice of the Triple Helix Model in Developing Countries - Issues and Challenges (Hardcover): Mohammed Saad, Girma... Theory and Practice of the Triple Helix Model in Developing Countries - Issues and Challenges (Hardcover)
Mohammed Saad, Girma Zawdie
R4,226 Discovery Miles 42 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Theory and Practice of Triple Helix Model in Developing Countries contributes to the expanding literature on "triple helix" innovation - focusing on developing countries. The book is based on practical cases and experiences from Africa, Latin America and Asia. Relevant experiences and best practices from developed countries are also examined. The book is presented as a response to the growing awareness about the need for policy shift from the traditional technology transfer practice to a policy position that is capable of providing a sustainable basis for innovation and technological progress in developing countries. The book explores the triple helix system of innovation based on the dynamics of the interactive relationships between government, industry and universities in the creation, dissemination and sharing of knowledge in developing countries. A major point addressed by the book is the extent to which the triple helix' system of relationships between university, industry and government can enhance the effectiveness of universities in developing countries as agents of innovation, industrialization and sustainable development.

T-Minus AI - Humanity's Countdown to Artificial Intelligence and the New Pursuit of Global Power (Hardcover): Michael... T-Minus AI - Humanity's Countdown to Artificial Intelligence and the New Pursuit of Global Power (Hardcover)
Michael Kanaan
R439 Discovery Miles 4 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

2020 Foreword Indie Award Honorable Mention in the "Science & Technology" Category Late in 2017, the global significance of the conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) changed forever. China put the world on alert when it released a plan to dominate all aspects of AI across the planet. Only weeks later, Vladimir Putin raised a Russian red flag in response by declaring AI the future for all humankind, and proclaiming that, "Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world." The race was on. Consistent with their unique national agendas, countries throughout the world began plotting their paths and hurrying their pace. Now, not long after, the race has become a sprint. Despite everything at stake, to most of us AI remains shrouded by a cloud of mystery and misunderstanding. Hidden behind complicated and technical jargon and confused by fantastical depictions of science fiction, the modern realities of AI and its profound implications are hard to decipher, but crucial to recognize. In T-Minus AI: Humanity's Countdown to Artificial Intelligence and the New Pursuit of Global Power, author Michael Kanaan explains AI from a human-oriented perspective we can all finally understand. A recognized national expert and the U.S. Air Force's first Chairperson for Artificial Intelligence, Kanaan weaves a compelling new view on our history of innovation and technology to masterfully explain what each of us should know about modern computing, AI, and machine learning. Kanaan also dives into the global implications of AI by illuminating the cultural and national vulnerabilities already exposed and the pressing issues now squarely on the table. AI has already become China's all-purpose tool to impose its authoritarian influence around the world. Russia, playing catch up, is weaponizing AI through its military systems and now infamous, aggressive efforts to disrupt democracy by whatever disinformation means possible. America and like-minded nations are awakening to these new realities-and the paths they're electing to follow echo loudly the political foundations and, in most cases, the moral imperatives upon which they were formed. As we march toward a future far different than ever imagined, T-Minus AI is fascinating and crucially well-timed. It leaves the fiction behind, paints the alarming implications of AI for what they actually are, and calls for unified action to protect fundamental human rights and dignities for all.

Measuring Slipperiness - Human Locomotion and Surface Factors (Paperback): Wen-Ruey Chang, Theodore K Courtney, Raoul... Measuring Slipperiness - Human Locomotion and Surface Factors (Paperback)
Wen-Ruey Chang, Theodore K Courtney, Raoul Grongvist, Mark Redfern
R1,767 Discovery Miles 17 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent decades, injury has begun to gain prominence as a public health and societal problem. Slipperiness and slip, trip, and fall (STF) injuries are among the greatest obstacles to reducing the injury burden. One of the biggest challenges in STF is defining and measuring slipperiness. After over half a century of serious research on what slipperiness is and how it can be measured, rapid progress has been made in the decade of the 90s. Measuring Slipperiness: Human Locomotion and Surface Factors provides an overview of basic concepts and definitions of terms related to the 'measurement of slipperiness' from the onset of a foot slide to a gradual loss of balance and a fall. The book includes expert group perspectives on human-centered (biomechanical, locomotive, perceptual, and cognitive), and surface-centered (roughness, friction) aspects and approaches. It addresses the injury burden of slipperiness, globally reviews existing slipmeters, and summarizes areas of consensus in the field of slipperiness measurement. Perhaps the most comprehensive treatment of the subject ever compiled, the book contains contributions from North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania including the National Laboratories of Finland, France, the U.K., and the U.S. A valuable, state-of-the-art textbook, it provides students with a useful starting point for understanding the many aspects of STF.

Roberto Lopez-Martinez, Andrea Piccaluga
R3,655 Discovery Miles 36 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The search for the key to economic growth has proved elusive and contentious. This book uses new empirical evidence to propose an integrated approach for achieving strong industrial and technological capabilities to form the basis for regional and national economic development. The authors use the experiences of countries in Europe and Latin America to show that socio-technical constituencies play a fundamental role in innovation based economic development at both a regional and national level. By blending insights from the industrial cluster and national innovation system approaches with the socio-technical constituencies approach, the authors successfully integrate long standing debates such as agency structure and micro-meso-macro analysis. The work is based both on a theoretical effort to build a new framework for economic growth, and on a number of concrete experiences from a number of countries in Europe and Latin America. Knowledge Flows in National Systems of Innovation will prove essential reading for scholars of innovation, technology and economic development.

Engines of the Imagination - Renaissance Culture and the Rise of the Machine (Paperback, New): Jonathan Sawday Engines of the Imagination - Renaissance Culture and the Rise of the Machine (Paperback, New)
Jonathan Sawday
R1,206 Discovery Miles 12 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At what point did machines and technology begin to have an impact on the cultural consciousness and imagination of Europe? How was this reflected through the art and literature of the time? Was technology a sign of the fall of humanity from its original state of innocence or a sign of human progress and mastery over the natural world? In his characteristically lucid and captivating style, Jonathan Sawday investigates these questions and more by engaging with the poetry, philosophy, art, and engineering of the period to find the lost world of the machine in the pre-industrial culture of the European Renaissance.

The aesthetic and intellectual dimension of these machines appealed to familiar figures such as Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Montaigne, and Leonardo da Vinci as well as to a host of lesser known writers and artists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This intellectual engagement with machines in the European Renaissance gave rise to new attitudes towards gender, work and labour, and even fostered the new sciences of artificial life and reason which would be pursued by figures such as Descartes, Hobbes, and Leibniz in the seventeenth century.

Writers, philosophers and artists had mixed and often conflicting reactions to technology, reflecting a paradoxical attitude between modern progress and traditional values. Underpinning the enthusiastic creation of a machine-driven world, then, were stories of loss and catastrophe. These contradictory attitudes are part of the legacy of the European Renaissance, just as much as the plays of Shakespeare or the poetry of John Milton. And this historical legacy helps to explain many of our own attitudes towards thetechnology that surrounds us, sustains us, and sometimes perplexes us in the modern world.
