Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations (Hardcover): Roger Frank, Fahd Cuira, Sebastien Burlon Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations (Hardcover)
Roger Frank, Fahd Cuira, Sebastien Burlon
R2,861 Discovery Miles 28 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations introduces the concept of limit state calculations, before focusing on shallow and deep foundations. The limit state combinations of actions are examined, and practical calculation models of the bearing capacity and of the settlement are presented, particularly from the results of Menard pressuremeter tests and cone penetration tests. Attention is also given to the use of numerical methods, which has been developed over the past twenty years. It provides an overview of various elements of ground-structure interaction that are pertinent for a refined design of both shallow and deep foundations, such as allowable displacements of structures, and ground-structure couplings. This guide will be useful to practising engineers and experts in design offices, contracting companies and administrations, as well as students and researchers in civil engineering. Though its focus is generally on the French practice, it is more widely applicable to design based on, or generally in line with, Eurocode 7, with references to BS ENs. Roger Frank is an Honorary Professor at Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees (ENPC). From 1998 to 2004, he chaired the committee on Eurocode 7 on Geotechnical design. Fahd Cuira is the Scientific Director of Terrasol (Setec group), France. Since 2018, he has been in charge of the course on the design of geotechnical structures at ENPC. Sebastien Burlon is a Project Director at Terrasol (Setec group), France. He is involved in the evolution of Eurocode 7 and teaches several geotechnical courses, especially at ENPC.

Smart Cement - Development, Testing, Modeling and Real-Time Monitoring (Hardcover): Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan Smart Cement - Development, Testing, Modeling and Real-Time Monitoring (Hardcover)
Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan
R4,949 Discovery Miles 49 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over three billion metric tons of cement are produced annually worldwide, making concrete the most extensively used construction material. Self-sensing, or smart, cement allows real-time monitoring of performance through the entire service life of a concrete structure, for the detection of changing stresses, contamination, excessive temperature, gas leaks and pre-seismic activity. This is achieved by adding a very small proportion of conductive or semi-conductive fibers, such as carbon fibers to the bulk cement, making it piezoresistive, and enabling changes in the concrete's electrical resistivity in response to shear stress and strain to be monitored. This state-of-the-art reference work presents experimental results with a realistic theoretical framework, for cement manufactures, concrete technologists and contractors as well as researchers.

Sewage and Landfill Leachate - Assessment and Remediation of Environmental Hazards (Paperback): Marco Ragazzi Sewage and Landfill Leachate - Assessment and Remediation of Environmental Hazards (Paperback)
Marco Ragazzi
R2,423 Discovery Miles 24 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This title includes a number of Open Access chapters. This new book provides a multiperspective look at research into many elements of remediating environmental hazards connected to sewage and landfill leachate. Sewage and landfill leachate treatments include various processes that are used to manage and dispose of the liquid portions of solid waste. Untreated leachate and sewage are hazards to the environment if they enter the water system. The goal of treatment is to reduce the contaminating load to the point that leachate and sewage liquids may be safely released into groundwater, streams, lakes, and the ocean. Around the world, however, huge volumes of contaminated water from sewage and landfill leachate is still pumped directly into water systems, especially in the world's developing nations. Aside from the damage to marine environments and fisheries that this causes, it also jeopardizes the world's vulnerable water resources. This compendium volume explores effective sewage management, which is essential for nutrient recycling and for maintaining ecosystem integrity. It looks at a range of technologies that are available for the treatment of sewage and landfill leachate. The editor, himself a respected and experienced researcher in this field, includes chapters that cover biological treatments, reverse osmosis, and chemical-physical processes. This volume offers important research that will help us both assess our existing treatment facilities, as well as build better, more effective ones for the future.

Designing Aeration Systems using Baseline Mass Transfer Coefficients - For Water and Wastewater Treatment (Hardcover): Johnny... Designing Aeration Systems using Baseline Mass Transfer Coefficients - For Water and Wastewater Treatment (Hardcover)
Johnny Lee
R4,495 Discovery Miles 44 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book is about the discovery of a Standard Specific Baseline Mass Transfer Coefficient (KLa0)20 that represents a revolutionary change in the understanding, designing, and operation of aeration equipment, as well as providing a baseline for future research and development for water and wastewater treatment systems. It discusses the use of the Standard Model for oxygen transfer to determine the baseline, and its major finding is to show that the gas transfer model is a consistent relativistic theory of molecular interactions. Previously, the challenge was the appearance of divergences in the mass transfer coefficient estimations that defies aeration design. This normalization to a baseline is a great achievement in physics and engineering.

Recent Advances in Contact Mechanics - Papers Collected at the 5th Contact Mechanics International Symposium (CMIS2009), April 28-30, 2009, Chania, Greece (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Georgios E. Stavroulakis
R4,834 Discovery Miles 48 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Contact mechanics is an active research area with deep theoretical and numerical roots. The links between nonsmooth analysis and optimization with mechanics have been investigated intensively during the last decades, especially in Europe. The study of complementarity problems, variational -, quasivariational- and hemivariational inequalities arising in contact mechanics and beyond is a hot topic for interdisciplinary research and cooperation. The needs of industry for robust solution algorithms suitable for large scale applications and the regular updates of the respective elements in major commercial computational mechanics codes, demonstrate that this interaction is not restricted to the academic environment. The contributions of this book have been selected from the participants of the CMIS 2009 international conference which took place in Crete and continued a successful series of specialized contact mechanics conferences.
