Magic, the art of a true gentleman, its secrets lost in the mists
of time. An evil man, cast from this world to the world of the dead
for using the magic of life to kill another human. A true Earth
Wand, born on All Hallows' Eve, and cut during the chimes of
midnight. Mr Slive finally has one of the great, lost Earth Wands,
and has returned to destroy those who stood against him, and take
all of the world's power for himself. Only a circle of magic has
any chance of stopping him, and only two teenagers and a cat now
stand between him and domination of mankind. For Holly, Alec and
Charlie, it is a race, between worlds to the secret caves of a lost
civilisation, and through time to ancient, haunted forests and a
strange land lost between sea and cliffs. From dragons, ghosts and
deadly shadow creatures, to magic tunnels that can trap a person
within them forever. It can only end in a confrontation between one
of the most powerful magicians who ever lived, and two children and
a cat who know they must not fail!
How It Happens follows the story of author Jean Alicia Elster's
maternal grandmother, Dorothy May Jackson. Born in Tennessee in
1890, Dorothy May was the middle daughter of Addie Jackson, a
married African-American housekeeper at one of the white
boardinghouses in town, and Tom Mitchell, a commanding white
attorney from a prominent family. Through three successive
generations of African-American women, Elster intertwines the
fictionalized adaptations of the defining periods and
challenges-race relations, miscegenation, sexual assault, and class
divisions-in her family's history. A continuation of the plots
begun in Elster's two novels Who's Jim Hines? and The Colored Car,
How It Happens continues the story for an older audience and begins
with Addie's life before the turn of the century in the South as a
married Black woman with three biracial daughters navigating the
relationship between her husband and Tom Mitchell. Later the story
shifts to Addie's daughter Dorothy May's experiences both as a
child and later, as a teacher who, choosing between her career and
marriage to a man she barely knows, moves to Detroit. The story
moves along with Dorothy May's daughter Jean, who, with the support
of her mother and the memory of her grandmother, confronts and
comes to terms with her role in society and the options available
to her as a college-educated Black woman in the post-World War II
industrial North. While there is struggle and hardship for each of
these women, they each build off one other and continue to demand
space in the world in which they live. Written for young adult
readers, How It Happens carries the heart through the obstacles
that still face women of color today and persists in holding open
the door of communication between generations.

Arthur Scott Bailey (1877-1949) was the author of more than forty
children's books. The Newark Evening News said: "Mr. Bailey
centered all his plots in the animal, bird and insect worlds,
weaving natural history into the stories in a way that won
educator's approval without arousing the suspicions of his young
readers."

die moderne taalgebruik en aan te sluit by die hedendaagse tiener,
maar niks van die oorspronklike sjarme en spanning het in die

This title is suitable for ages 5 to 7 years. While other
children's religious titles focus on Saint Francis of Assisi as an
adult, few, if any, have concentrated on the early life of the
patron saint of animals and the environment. Stunning illustrations
punctuate this beautifully told story of Saint Francis as a boy as
he communes with nature and treats even the fiercest of animals - a
hungry wolf - with the same compassion he would show his
grandmother. In a fearless display of courage, tolerance, and
understanding, the young Francis makes peace with the wolf,
foreshadowing his teachings of harmony with the world around us and
man's duty to protect nature.
Achmed Abdullah's name was once synonymous with adventure. He

readers throughout the world.
