Living with Myanmar (Hardcover): Justine Chambers, Charlotte Glloway, Jonathan Liljeblad Living with Myanmar (Hardcover)
Justine Chambers, Charlotte Glloway, Jonathan Liljeblad
R1,308 R1,087 Discovery Miles 10 870 Save R221 (17%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since 2011, Myanmar has experienced many changes to its social, political and economic landscape. The formation of a new government in 2016, led by the National League for Democracy, was a crucially important milestone in the country's transition to a more inclusive form of governance. And yet, for many people everyday struggles remain unchanged, and have worsened in recent years. Key economic, social and political reforms have stalled, conflict persists, and longstanding issues of citizenship and belonging remain. The wide-ranging challenges of living with Myanmar are the subject of this volume. Each other offers a different perspective on the socio-political and economic mutations occurring in the country and the challenges that still remain. The book is divided into six sections, and covers critical issues ranging from gender equality and identity politics to agrarian reform and the representative role parliament. Collectively, these voices raise key questions concerning the institutional legacies of military rule and their ongoing role in subverting the country's reform process. However, they also offer insights in the creative and productive ways the Myanmar's activists, civil society, parliamentarians, bureaucrats and everyday people attempt to engage with and reform those legacies.

Queer Southeast Asia (Paperback): Shawna Tang, Hendri Yulius Wijaya Queer Southeast Asia (Paperback)
Shawna Tang, Hendri Yulius Wijaya
R1,227 Discovery Miles 12 270 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Tang and Wijaya present a range of new and established scholarly voices, including local activists directly involved in developments in Southeast Asia. This groundbreaking collection presents the current state of play and longstanding LGBTQ+ debates in this often-overlooked region of Asia. The diversity of both the subject and the region is reflected in the broad scope of topics addressed, from the impact of Japanese queer popular culture on queer Filipinos, to the politics of public toilets in Singapore, and the impact of digital governance on queer communities across ASEAN. Taken in combination, these investigations not only highlight the operations of queer politics in Southeast Asia, but also present a concrete basis to reflect on queer knowledge production in the region. A vital resource for students and scholars of gender and sexuality in Southeast Asia, or any Queer or LGBTQ+ studies looking beyond the West.

Perspectives on Feminist Political Thought in European History - From the Middle Ages to the Present (Paperback): Tjitske... Perspectives on Feminist Political Thought in European History - From the Middle Ages to the Present (Paperback)
Tjitske Akkerman, Siep Stuurman
R1,103 Discovery Miles 11 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Spanning six centuries of political thought in European history, this book puts the ideas of thinkers from Christine de Pizan to Simone de Beauvoir in the broader contexts of their time. Conventional histories of political thought have sometimes relegated feminist thinking to the footnotes. This text considers how feminism is central to key notions of modern political discourse such as autonomy, liberty and equality, and feminist discussions of morality have been linked to major currents in political thought such as republicanism, civic humanism and romanticism. This collection of essays aims to show that feminism is not a variant of modern radical discourse but is a mode of analyzing the issues of authority, power and virtue that have been at the heart of European political thought from the Middle Ages.

Poems Of Wine & Revelry - The Khamriyyat of Abu Nuwas (Hardcover): Jim Colville Poems Of Wine & Revelry - The Khamriyyat of Abu Nuwas (Hardcover)
Jim Colville
R5,756 Discovery Miles 57 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Arabic literature has a distinguished tradition of bacchanals but none are so consistently entertaining, explicit or iconoclastic as those of Abu Nuwas al-Hasan ibn Hani al-Hakami (c. 756-c. 815), the bad boy of Abbasid poetry.

One of the greatest of Arabic poets -- indeed, the greatest in the opinion of some critics -- Abu Nuwas wrote accomplished verse that demonstrated his technical mastery of all the major genres. However, his poems on wine (khamriyyat), homosexual love (mudhakkarat) and ribaldry (majouniyyat) are his best known and have earned him his notoriety. These poems often landed him in trouble and prison during his lifetime and, even today, are still subject to censorship by the guardians of public morality. As his talent makes him difficult to ignore, he is frequently subject to misrepresentation.

Abu Nuwas' poetry is characterised by an astonishing lack of inhibition and one of the most attractive features of his diwan is the extent to which his verse reveals its author's personality. What emerges is a likeable, if rather louche, character with an outrageous sense of humour, sharp wit, unaccompanied by malice, and considerable sensibility who let no convention save, on occasion, the order of the caliph, restrain him in his pursuit of life's sensual pleasures.

In his khamriyyat, Abu Nuwas offers a glimpse of the hedonistic and dissipated world he inhabited: the world of Baghdad high society at the zenith of the Abbasid caliphate. Yet there is also a modern and up-to-date feel about his poetry that makes it ideal for presentation to an English-speaking readership, some twelve centuries after his death.

Federalism in Action - The Devolution of Canada's Public Employment Service, 1995-2015 (Hardcover): Donna E. Wood Federalism in Action - The Devolution of Canada's Public Employment Service, 1995-2015 (Hardcover)
Donna E. Wood
R2,459 Discovery Miles 24 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Every developed country has a public employment service that connects job seekers with employers through information, placement, and training support services. In Federalism in Action, Donna E. Wood assesses how Canada's public employment service is performing after responsibility was transferred from the federal government to provinces, territories, and Aboriginal organizations between 1995 and 2015. Drawing upon over twenty years of data, Wood reveals the governance choices provinces made, the reasons behind these choices, and the outcomes they achieved. Provincial decisions regarding employment programming is an important public policy issue about which little is known, and even less understood within the context of Aboriginal communities. Federalism in Action includes analytical comparisons of Canada's employment programming with the United States, Australia, and the European Union, as well as information from insightful interviews with key informants from every province. In firmly placing Canada within the extensive international literature on the governance of welfare-to-work policies, this book makes an important new contribution to research.

Reassessing ASEAN - Adelphi Paper 328 (Paperback): Jeannie Henderson Reassessing ASEAN - Adelphi Paper 328 (Paperback)
Jeannie Henderson
R887 Discovery Miles 8 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the accession of Cambodia in April 1999, the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) finally achieved its founding vision: the incorporation of all ten South-east Asian states. However, ASEAN-10 faces an unprecedented series of challenges, stemming from the organization's rapid enlargement since 1995, economic crisis among key members, and political upheavals in Indonesia, its largest and most important member. ASEAN in 1999 is a pale imitation of the more confident organization which emerged from the end of the Cold War as one of the world's most successful experiments in regionalism. This paper asks whether ASEAN can remain relevant to the management of regional problems.

Turkey in Europe (Hardcover): Charles Eliot Turkey in Europe (Hardcover)
Charles Eliot
R2,959 Discovery Miles 29 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First Published in 2004. The papers presented in this book were written at various periods, but have a certain unity as being the result of an attempt to understand what is the real condition of Turkey and how that condition has arisen. The author recognises that an adequate knowledge of any one of the many themes here touched upon can only be obtained by lifelong research; but feels that for the purposes of practical politics it is well to see only one side of a question and act accordingly. This book sets itself apart from non-political writers who often impair the value of their work because they devote themselves to a special subject and unconsciously become partisans.

Mucho Macho - Seduction, Desire, and the Homoerotic Lives of Latin Men (Hardcover): Chris Girman Mucho Macho - Seduction, Desire, and the Homoerotic Lives of Latin Men (Hardcover)
Chris Girman
R4,525 Discovery Miles 45 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Quality researchuniquely enhanced by the author's personal experience! In one of the first books to examine machismo from the perspective of Latin American and Latino men, Chris Girman relies on a compelling combination of ethnographic research and personal experience to explain how macho menmen like the author himselfregulate and sustain same-sex erotic encounters. Girman incorporates his own sexual experiences with a variety of Latin men into the book, infusing his writing with the unique perspective and vivid description that can only be related by someone who has lived the research he writes about. While most of the literature on Latin American male same-sex desire ignores the significance of the male body in its investigation, this book shows why it is essential to focus on the macho male body and re-evaluates so-called machismo to forge a more nuanced description of Latin American masculinity. Girman incorporates his own sexual experiences with a variety of Latin American men into the book, infusing his writing with the unique perspective and vivid descriptions that can only be related by someone who has lived the research he writes about. With this book, you'll become familiar with various kinds of Latin-American homosexual behavior. Here's a glimpse at what you'll find inside: Machismo, Practice Theorists, and Macho Performance summarizes previous research on Latin American male [homo]sexuality and defines the author's concept of machismo and Latin American masculinity. Head, Hands, Balls, and Ass shows why focusing on the body as living matter, rather than metaphor (as is done in so many other books on sexuality), is the ideal point of entry into the study of Latin American male [homo]sexuality and masculinity. This chapter focuses on specific regions of the macho bodyhead, hands, balls, and assto explain how machismo actually promotes, rather than denies, sexual encounters between men. It also shows the importance of the Latin American family as a variable that structures the manner and frequency in which [homo]sexual encounters occur. The Dominican Tiguere and Hegemonic Masculinities takes a specific look at a very peculiar form of hegemonic masculinityrelying on cunning more than strength to come out on topthat is indigenous to the Dominican Republic. This chapter also tells the stories of five of the author's sexual encounters in that nation and discusses the tiguere style of masculine performance. Desire in a Costa Rican Prison analyzes the ways in which desire, power, and pleasure are constituted in the Latin American prison environment. Historical Representations of Same-Sex Desire examines two short storiesEl Matadero (Esteban Echeverria) and Comienza el Desfile (Reinaldo Arenas), which highlight male eroticism as important concepts within discourses on national identity. Both stories conceptualize same-sex desire within specific historical moments and demonstrate how male [homo]sexuality emerges and represents itself not in contrast to the dominant discourse, but within that discourse itself. Familiar, Familial Voices: Latino Men Speak Out documents the voices of gay-identified Latino men living in Central Texasmen who have come to love other Latin, Black, and Anglo men in the context of very full lives. These men reveal their conceptions of identity, race, performance, resistance, family, pleasure, desire, masculinity, silence, and place. Performing Matter[s]-Masculinity, the Male Body, and the Evocation of the [non]real defies the notion that written representations can capture the lived realities of

The Mythology of Mexico and Central America (Hardcover): John Bierhorst The Mythology of Mexico and Central America (Hardcover)
John Bierhorst
R1,866 Discovery Miles 18 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this expansive volume, John Bierhorst brings to light the gods and heroes of pre-Columbian times--and demonstrates that they are very much alive today. The book provides translations of twenty "basic myths," showing how these have influenced the artistic, literary, and political life of modern Mexico and Central America. Originally published in 1990, the text has been updated to reflect recent advances in Mesoamerican studies. In addition, a new Afterword describes how these native mythologies--since the late 1980s--have begun incorporating issues of international significance, including cultural pluralism, religious freedom, and environmentalism.

Detailed maps show tribal locations and the distribution of key stories. Indian artworks illustrate the texts and samples of differing narrative styles add enrichment, as some of the world's purest and most powerful myths are made more accessible--and more meaningful--than ever before.
