Cross-National Research in Self-Reported Crime and Delinquency (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): Malcolm Klein Cross-National Research in Self-Reported Crime and Delinquency (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
Malcolm Klein
R5,230 Discovery Miles 52 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Malcolm W. Klein Center for Research on Crime and Social Control University of Southern California 1. BACKGROUND In June of 1988, approximately forty scholars and researchers met for four days in the Leeuwenborst Congres Center in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, to participate in a workshop entitled Self-Report Metho dology in Criminological Research. The participants represented 15 nations and 30 universities and research centers, a diversity that was matched by the experiences and focal interests in self-report methods among the participants. This volume is the result of the workshop process and in particular of the invitations to participants to prepare pre-conference papers for distribution prior to the workshop. The chapters in the volume were selected from the larger set of pre conference papers. As workshop conv ner and volume editor, it falls on me to set some of the context for this enterprise. Self-report crime is "admitted" crime, derived from interview and questionnaire responses obtained from adults and juveniles (regardless of whether or not they have been arrested) concerning their own illegal behaviors. Growing awareness of the limitations of official crime statistics has led to the development of self-report procedures."

T Scheffer, K. Hannken-Illjes, A. Kozin
R2,643 Discovery Miles 26 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Procedure is not just a programme or a nexus of formalities. It is something done by legal experts and lay participants in a highly concerted ensemble. Procedure frames and advances all law-relevant activities. This book, written by three authors from different disciplinary backgrounds, provides an in-depth comparison of criminal defence work in different legal cultures. Via an ethnographic comparison, this book also shows how defence work responds to the challenges of different procedural regimes and how it contributes to their individual outcomes. Criminal Defence and Procedure opens up new horizons for legal comparison, inviting novel understandings of procedural law as well as possibilities of legal reform.

Questioning Crime and Criminology (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): Moira Peelo, Keith Soothill Questioning Crime and Criminology (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
Moira Peelo, Keith Soothill
R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a text for criminology students designed to take them to the heart of the contradictions, confusions and blurred boundaries around the subject of crimeabout what crime is, about social regulation and control, and about social responsibility. It focuses on the key questions and issues underpinning them in contemporary definitions, representations and explanations of crime. It questions the platitudes and clichs surrounding public discussion of crime, by acknowledging the individual, social and political frameworks within which we explore crime and criminality. Questioning Crime and Criminology explores the nature of criminology as a discipline. It assumes that for students to understand crime and criminology they need to understand the wider societal and sociological implications of all crime related phenomena, and not just explore individual, psychological meanings.

Crime and Empire 1840 - 1940 - Criminal justice in local and global context (Paperback, illustrated edition): Carolyn Strange Crime and Empire 1840 - 1940 - Criminal justice in local and global context (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Carolyn Strange; Edited by Barry Godfrey, Graeme Dunstall
R1,246 Discovery Miles 12 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a major contribution to the comparative histories of crime and criminal justice, focusing on the legal regimes of the British empire during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its overarching theme is the transformation and convergence of criminal justice systems during a period that saw a broad shift from legal pluralism to the hegemony of state law in the European world and beyond. Chapters in the book present a variety of approaches, ranging from global discussions of key issues and developments to an exploration of local case studies and their relationship to these broader themes. Overall they reflect thinking and developments within criminological, historiographical and post-colonial approaches. Crime and Empire 1840-1940 reflects a growing interest in the history of criminal justice on the part of both criminologists and historians. The legacy of colonialism continues to be disputed in the courts and elsewhere. The contributors to this book are concerned le

Punishment and Politics (Hardcover): Michael Tonry Punishment and Politics (Hardcover)
Michael Tonry
R5,479 Discovery Miles 54 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Labour has embarked upon a root and branch remaking of the criminal justice system in England and Wales, with a mass of new legislation implemented or planned. It has ensured a continuously high profile for criminal justice issues, and they have been at the centre of wider political discourse. Yet the basis and evidence on which these reforms are being introduced is both uncertain and highly controversial. Despite spending tens of millions of pounds of research into the criminal justice system in the name of evidence-based policy, evidence has counted only in relation to lowlevel technocratic issues. On the big issues the clear weight of evidence points in opposite directions to those which the government has taken. The primary drivers of recent policies have rather been the emulation of recent USA policies (at a time when these are now being abandoned in the USA because they have been shown to be ineffective); and a media-driven agenda with a focus on conspicuous crime prevention which have had the effect of heightening rather than assuaging public fears and concerns. This provocative yet authoritative book seeks to expose and to unravel what has really driven the making of criminal justice policy in the UK. It will be essential reading for anybody interested in knowing what is going on in criminal justice, and why it is so central to political debate more generally.

Cary D. Rostow, Robert D. Davis
R3,525 Discovery Miles 35 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook is ideal for professionals and for coursework designed to prepare individuals for careers as police or municipal officials, psychologists, students, behavioral science specialists, human rights advocates, and attorneys. A helpful glossary makes the book even more useful for students and those who do not have extensive academic or formal training in psychology or public administration. You'll find clear instructions for developing a FFDE system from the law enforcement executive's viewpoint (valuable for attorneys, police psychologists, and civil service board members as well), and an extensive bibliography with particular emphasis on laws and cases that provide guidance to psychological and law enforcement professionals. Several appendices provide examples of documentation that can be used in the evaluation process. This book brings you reliable information on: legal precedents, with a review of legal cases (in language appropriate for law enforcement executives and psychologists) the interaction between police culture, psychological assessment, and therapy federal laws that impact FFDEs, including the HIPAA, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Medical Leave Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act case law and FFDEs, with emphasis on civil rights laws, labor issues, professional ethical dilemmas, and the psychologist as a potential expert witness the proper uses-and the misuses-of the FFDE approach police departmental civil liability and the role that the FFDE plays in addressing legal risks In addition, this book contains a succinct review of psychological testing (psychometrics), and the technicalities of employing a professional psychologist to determine the fitness of commissioned officers. Jack the Ripper - The Definitive History (Paperback, Rev. pbk. ed): Paul Begg Jack the Ripper - The Definitive History (Paperback, Rev. pbk. ed)
Paul Begg
R1,274 Discovery Miles 12 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'The clearest, most accurate, and most up-to-date account of the Ripper murders, by one of Britain's greatest and most respected experts on the "autumn of terror" in Victorian London.' William D. Rubenstein, Professor of Modern History, University of Wales, Aberystwyth England in the 1880s was a society in transition, shedding the skin of Victorianism and moving towards a more modern age. Promiscuity, moral decline, prostitution, unemployment, poverty, police inefficiency... all these things combined to create a feeling of uncertainty and fear. The East End of London became the focus of that fear. Here lived the uneducated, poverty-ridden and morally destitute masses. When Jack the Ripper walked onto the streets of the East End he came to represent everything that was wrong with the area and with society as a whole. He was fear in a human form, an unknown lurker in the shadows who could cross boundaries and kill. Jack the Ripper: The Definitive History is not yet another attempt to identify the culprit. Instead, the book sets the murders in their historical context, examining in depth what East London was like in 1888, how it came to be that way, and how events led to one of the most infamous and grisly episodes of the Victorian era.

Preventing Sexual Violence - Interdisciplinary Approaches to Overcoming a Rape Culture (Hardcover): N. Henry, A. Powell Preventing Sexual Violence - Interdisciplinary Approaches to Overcoming a Rape Culture (Hardcover)
N. Henry, A. Powell
R3,328 Discovery Miles 33 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globally, rates of sexual violence remain unacceptably high, with disproportionate effects on women and girls. While most scholars and practitioners uniformly concur about the scope of the problem, there is currently little agreement about how to prevent sexual violence before it occurs.Drawing on diverse disciplines such as criminology, education, health promotion, law, psychology, social work, socio-legal studies, sociology and women's studies, this book provides the first interdisciplinary collection on the primary prevention of sexual violence. The volume addresses the key causes or determinants of sexual violence, including cultural attitudes, values, beliefs and norms, as well as systemic gender-based inequalities that create the conditions underlying much violence against women. Including contributions from internationally renowned experts in the field, the volume critically investigates the theoretical underpinnings of prevention work, describing and analysing the limits and possibilities of primary prevention strategies 'on the ground'. The chapters collectively examine the role that structural violence and gender inequality play in fostering a 'culture' of sexual violence, and reflect on the relationship between macro and micro levels for understanding both sexual violence perpetration and prevention. This book will be a key resource for scholars, practitioners and policymakers involved in the fields of sexual violence prevention, education, law, family violence, and child sexual abuse.Including contributions from Victoria L. Banyard (University of New Hampshire, USA), Alison Cares (Assumption College, USA), Moira Carmody (University of Western Sydney, Australia), Gillian Fletcher (La Trobe Univeristy, Australia), Wendy Larcombe (University of Melbourne, Australia), Claire Maxwell (University of London, UK), Mary M. Moynihan (University of New Hampshire, USA), Bob Pease (Deakin University, Australia) and Antonia Quadara (Australian Institute of Family Studies, Australia).

Criminal Visions - Media representations of crime and justice (Paperback): Paul Mason Criminal Visions - Media representations of crime and justice (Paperback)
Paul Mason
R1,252 Discovery Miles 12 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Media representations of law and order are matters of keen public interest and have been the subject of intense debate amongst those with an interest in the media, crime and criminal justice. Many people have had no direct contact and experience with the criminal justice system and therefore rely on media reports and representations, something which has important implications for public perceptions of law enforcement agencies, the courts and prisons, as well as offenders and victims. Despite being an increasingly high profile subject, few publications address this subject head on. This book meets this need by bringing together an important range of papers from leading researchers in the field addressing issues of fictional, factual and hybrid representations in the media.

City of Disorder - How the Quality of Life Campaign Transformed New York Politics (Hardcover): Alex S. Vitale City of Disorder - How the Quality of Life Campaign Transformed New York Politics (Hardcover)

Read the Introduction

"In City of Disorder, Alex Vitale provides a wise and balanced analysis of the preoccupation with social order in New York City that flowered under Giuliani's watch. On the one side, neoliberal housing and employment markets were increasing the numbers of people who were displaced and homeless. The failure of government on all levels to regulate the market forces driving this development, or to intervene to provide alternatives for the people affected, meant that people coped as they always have, by camping on the streets and panhandling, and by turning to drugs and drink. These behaviors in turn created popular political support for the coercive social controls that came to characterize city policy in the nineties. But neither the homeless nor the public were responsible for the limited alternatives which drove this mean result."
--Frances Fox Piven, author of The War at Home: The Domestic Costs of Bush's Militarism

"Vitale presents an important critical analysis of 'quality of life' and 'zero tolerance' policing that have serious civil rights and civil liberties implications and are too often accepted, without careful scrutiny, as the solution to urban problems."
&m#8212;Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union

New York in the 1990s faced a aquality of lifea crisis of homelessness and public disorder. In response, frustrated local residents embraced the neoconservative ideas of Rudolph Giuliani, who pledged to restore order through aggressive policing and punitive social policies, shifting the focus of government from improving the lives of the needy to protecting the welfare of themiddle and upper classes. In exploring this development, Alex S. Vitale shows why historically liberal New York has voted against Democrats in the last four mayoral elections.

In City of Disorder, Vitale uses neighborhood case studies and city-wide economic development data to investigate the rise of punitive urban social policies. His findings show that the neoconservative backlash against the homeless and poor was a direct result of urban liberalismas embracing of neoliberal economic development strategies and its unwillingness to use local resources to respond to the disorder it helped create in a way that empowered communities and brought positive change to those on the margins.

Understanding the Risk Society - Crime, Security and Justice (Hardcover): Gabriel Mythen Understanding the Risk Society - Crime, Security and Justice (Hardcover)
Gabriel Mythen
R4,308 Discovery Miles 43 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this penetrating account of the impacts of risk on everyday life, Gabe Mythen provides a theoretically informed overview of the regulation of crime and security in a globalized world. By explicating the relationships between risk and crime, security and justice, the text applies risk to specific incidents and events, scrutinizing social processes and cultural practices, and illumining some of the central social and political issues of the modern age. Extending across a range of domains - including law, the environment, media and politics - Mythen embarks on a conceptual and critical exploration of risk theory. In doing so, his incisive text presents both a critical evaluation of the efficacy of competing perspectives on risk, and an authoritative appraisal of the place of risk within the social sciences.

Ethnographies of Law and Social Control (Hardcover): Stacy Lee Burns Ethnographies of Law and Social Control (Hardcover)
Stacy Lee Burns
R3,673 Discovery Miles 36 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume brings together distinguished scholars and cutting-edge experts in the fields of ethnography, law, and social control to present a comprehensive, insightful, and state-of-the-art overview of the everyday work and activities of legal and social control professionals, functionaries, and participants. The chapters in the collection bring to the foreground the distinctive contributions that ethnographic and ethnomethodologically-informed studies have to offer research on law and social control from theoretical, methodological, and substantive viewpoints. The discussions address a usefully broad and timely variety of themes, including management of the media by prosecutors in the famous Mike Tyson rape case; celebrity stalking and its social control; community protection strategies and legislation for high-risk sex offenders; probation officers' use of technology to "monitor" domestic violence offenders; how contemporary immigration rules-in-practice impact the immigration status of skilled professionals; bureaucratic decision-making by federal housing officers; police methods of interrogating suspects through an interpreter; how juvenile courts respond to troublesome youths; Self-change treatment programs for violent offenders in prison; and how jail inmates construct parenthood behind bars. The collection emphasizes the need to consider the organizationally and institutionally specific features and competencies that comprise the legal and social control work under investigation and allows for a deeper appreciation of the practical terms through which people involved in this work make their activities meaningful, carry out their tasks, and organize their interactions.

Dot.cons - Crime, deviance and identity on the Internet (Paperback): Yvonne Jewkes Dot.cons - Crime, deviance and identity on the Internet (Paperback)
Yvonne Jewkes
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cyberspace opens up infinitely new possibilities to the deviant imagination. With access to the Internet and sufficient know-how you can, if you are so inclined, buy a bride, cruise gay bars, go on a global shopping spree with someone else's credit card, break into a bank's security system, plan a demonstration in another country and hack into the Pentagon all on the same day. In more than any other medium, time and place are transcended, undermining the traditional relationship between physical context and social situation. This book crosses the boundaries of sociological, criminological and cultural discourse in order to explore the implications of these massive transformations in information and communication technologies for the growth of criminal and deviant identities and behaviour on the Internet. This is a book not about computers, nor about legal controversies over the regulation of cyberspace, but about people and the new patterns of human identity, behaviour and association that are emerging as a result of the communications revolution.

Sex Crime and the Media (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Chris Greer Sex Crime and the Media (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Chris Greer
R4,235 Discovery Miles 42 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sex crime has become one of the most intense areas of public and political concern in recent decades. This book explores the complex influences that shape its construction in the press. Media representations give important clues as to how we should perceive the nature and extent of sex crime, how we should think and feel about it, how we should respond to it, and the measures that might be taken to reduce risk. Understanding the media construction of sex crime is central to understanding its meaning and place in our everyday lives. Unlike much of the existing research, this book explores the construction of sex crime at every stage of the news production process. It then locates the findings within a wider context of cultural, economic and political change in late modernity. The book; shows how increased market competition and tabloidisation has altered fundamentally the way in which news is produced, communicated and consumed discusses representations of the full range of sex crimes from consensual homosexual offences and prostitution to serial rape and sex murder draws upon extensive empirical research in Northern Ireland, while addressing issues relevant to advance capitalist societies across the globe

In the legislative/justice arena it illustrates a "Circles of Support" proposal that mobilizes community resources to aid the adjustment of released offenders rather than branding them as dangerous to the community. Crime History and Histories of Crime - Studies in the Historiography of Crime and Criminal Justice in Modern History... Crime History and Histories of Crime - Studies in the Historiography of Crime and Criminal Justice in Modern History (Hardcover)
Clive Emsley
R4,993 Discovery Miles 49 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When is a crime a crime--or an act condoned by a significant portion of society? When is a criminal a criminal--or a revolutionary or a national hero? As the chapters in this collection make clear, what constitutes criminal activity varies, to a degree, among different societies and at different moments in a society's history. In this wide-ranging work, major historians of criminology and penology examine aspects of crime and criminal justice from medieval Western Europe to modern day Canada.

In addition to examining crime, the judicial system, and punishment in various societies, the chapters look at the evolution of police systems as societies urbanize and undergo population changes. Together these chapters look at many key questions concerning the modern study of criminal behavior. As such, the volume will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of the history of crime.

Women and Crime in Early Modern Holland (Hardcover): Manon Heijden Women and Crime in Early Modern Holland (Hardcover)
Manon Heijden
R3,494 Discovery Miles 34 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Crime is men's business, isn't it? Women are responsible for 10 percent of crime in Europe. Yet, if we look at the Dutch Republic in the early modern period, we find that in the towns of Holland women played a much larger role in crime. In a number of early modern towns about half of the criminals convicted in court were women. These women were in vulnerable positions and thus more likely to become involved in crime. They also had a relatively independent status and led remarkably public lives. Manon van der Heijden convincingly shows that it is the very combination of women's vulnerability and independence that accounts for the high female crime rates in Holland between 1600 and 1800.

Drug Courts - In Theory and in Practice (Paperback): Jr. Nolan Drug Courts - In Theory and in Practice (Paperback)
Jr. Nolan
R1,473 Discovery Miles 14 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drug courts offer offenders an intensive court-based treatment program as an alternative to the normal adjudication process. Begun in 1989, they have since spread dramatically throughout the United States. In this interdisciplinary examination of the expanding movement, a distinguished panel of legal practitioners and academics offers theoretical assessments and on-site empirical analyses of the workings of various courts in the United States, along with detailed comparisons and contrasts with related developments in Britain. Practitioners, politicians, and academics alike acknowledge the profound impact drug courts have had on the American criminal justice system. From a range of disciplinary perspectives, contributors to this volume seek to make sense of this important judicial innovation. While addressing a range of questions, Drug Courts also aims to achieve a careful balance between focused empirical studies and broader theoretical analyses of the same phenomenon. The volume maintains an analytical concentration on drug courts and on the important practical, philosophical, and jurisprudential consequences of this unique form of therapeutic jurisprudence.

Drug courts depart from the practices and procedures of typical criminal courts. Prosecutors and defense counsel play much-reduced roles. Often lawyers are not even present during regular drug court sessions. Instead, the main courtroom drama is between the judge and client, both of whom speak openly and freely in the drug court setting. Often accompanying the client is a treatment provider who advises the judge and reviews the client's progress in treatment. Court sessions are characterized by expressive and sometimes tearful testimonies about the recovery process, and are often punctuated with applause from those in attendance. Taken together, the chapters provide a variety of perspectives on drug courts, and extend our knowledge of the birth and evolution of a new movement. Drug Courts is an essential reference for courses in criminology, the sociology of drugs and deviance, and the philosophy of law and punishment.

Critical Criminology - Issues, Debates, Challenges (Hardcover): Russell Hogg, Kerry Carrington Critical Criminology - Issues, Debates, Challenges (Hardcover)
Russell Hogg, Kerry Carrington
R4,225 Discovery Miles 42 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the key issues and future prospects facing critical criminology, bringing together a set of leading authorities in the field from the UK, Australasia and the US. A key concern of the book is to review the possibilities and strategies of pursuing critical criminological scholarship in the context of an increasingly dominant administrative criminology paradigm, reflected in the rise of neo-liberalism, a "governmentalized" criminology of risk, crime control and situational crime prevention. The book is organized around three key themes: the first addresses the historical and genealogical context of the rise and demise of critical criminology in the liberal democracies; the second considers the possibility of re-envisioning critical criminological projects in the 21st century, given critiques of "rational" western thought, the impact of globalization and shifting modes of "social control" in criminal justice; while the third sets out a number of challenges and achievemen
