Based on a PhD thesis presented to Newcastle University in 1992, this book assesses through a specific survey area the efficiency of Raymond Selkirk's Piercebridge formula for Roman river transportation systems across Britain. Evidence for the formula is examined at ten sites across the North-east, and an alternative to the Piercebridge formula method of supply to the Roman army in the North-east is advanced.

Gudmundsson tells the story of field artillery in the 20th century and its impact on the major conflicts of our time. The US Army during the Civil War was the largest the country had raised in its brief history; and it would remain the largest ever raised until World War I. For much of the nineteenth century, the production of military clothing and equipment was geared to national emergencies. During the Mexican and Civil wars, the hardpressed Quartermaster Department was forced to rely on civilian and, later, European suppliers. A contract system too often resulted in profiteering, inferior goods, and administrative confusion. By 1887 reforms in the system were accompanied by strict specifications for materiel, which were published by the War Department in 1889 and distributed to fewer than sixty officers in the Quartermaster Department.

In his 2013 State of the Union Address, President Obama stated that the United States would "engage Russia to seek further reduction in our nuclear arsenals". These reductions could include limits on strategic, non-strategic and non-deployed nuclear weapons. The German destroyer fleet of World War II consisted of nine classes: the Diether Von Roeder Class, the Leberecht Maas Class and the wartime classes Z23, Z35, Z37, Z40, Z43, Z46 and Z52. These vessels, though fewer in number than the British destroyer fleet, tended to be much bigger and more powerful than their allied counterparts. The Austrian artillery of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars was a creation of the renowned Lichtenstein system of the early 1750s. This weight system produced a series of weapons of 3-, 6- and 12-pdr. calibre along with 7- and 10-pdr. Howitzers. In the 1780s they were joined by cavalry artillery guns with their 'Wurst' seats. In 1811 Austria also began the establishment of rocket troops based upon the British invention, whilst their heavy and siege pieces throughout the period remained the 12-, 18- and 24-pdrs.
