Feeding the City - Work and Food Culture of the Mumbai Dabbawalas (Hardcover): Sara Roncaglia Feeding the City - Work and Food Culture of the Mumbai Dabbawalas (Hardcover)
Sara Roncaglia
R1,076 Discovery Miles 10 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Every day in Mumbai 5,000 dabbawalas (literally translated as "those who carry boxes") distribute a staggering 200,000 home-cooked lunchboxes to the city's workers and students. Giving employment and status to thousands of largely illiterate villagers from Mumbai's hinterland, this co-operative has been in operation since the late nineteenth century. It provides one of the most efficient delivery networks in the world: only one lunch in six million goes astray. Feeding the City is an ethnographic study of the fascinating inner workings of Mumbai's dabbawalas. Cultural anthropologist Sara Roncaglia explains how they cater to the various dietary requirements of a diverse and increasingly global city, where the preparation and consumption of food is pervaded with religious and cultural significance. Developing the idea of "gastrosemantics" - a language with which to discuss the broader implications of cooking and eating - Roncaglia's study helps us to rethink our relationship to food at a local and global level.

The Political Economy of African Famine (Hardcover): R.E. Downs, Donna O. Kerner, Stephen P. Reyna The Political Economy of African Famine (Hardcover)
R.E. Downs, Donna O. Kerner, Stephen P. Reyna
R4,072 Discovery Miles 40 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1991. This volume explores the combination of political and economic forces that influence different levels of food supply. The book begins with a discussion of famine theories, ranging from cultural ecology to neo-Marxism. Following this survey is a series of essays by anthropologists, geographers, economists and development practitioners that explores the role of Western institutions in African famine, analyzes famine in particular countries, and documents the relationship between famine and gender. This book takes an unusually broad look at famine by including analyses of countries where hunger has rarely been studied and by examining African famine from both African and Western perspectives. Its concluding proposals for eradicating famine make innovative and provocative contributions to current global debates on food and nutrition.

African Food Systems in Crisis - Part One: Microperspectives (Hardcover): Rebecca Huss-Ashmore, Solomon H. Katz African Food Systems in Crisis - Part One: Microperspectives (Hardcover)
Rebecca Huss-Ashmore, Solomon H. Katz
R2,489 Discovery Miles 24 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1990. Produced by the Task Force on African Famine of the American Anthropological Association, this is the first of a multi-part project dealing with the long-term and ongoing food crisis in Africa primarily at the level of local production-the microperspective. It offers a series of anthropological and ecological views on the cause of the current problem and on coping strategies used by both indigenous people and developmental planners. The three sections of this volume review current explanations for food problems in Africa, focusing mainly on production and consumption at the household level; they offer a number of perspectives on the environmental, historical, political, and economic contexts for food stress, and include a series of case studies showing the ways in which Africans have responded to the threat of drought and hunger. The extent of research and the degree of scholarship involved in the production of this volume recommend it to all persons concerned with this ultimately global dilemma, particularly those involved in planning and relief efforts.

African Food Systems in Crisis - Part Two: Contending with Change (Hardcover): Rebecca Huss-Ashmore, Solomon H. Katz African Food Systems in Crisis - Part Two: Contending with Change (Hardcover)
Rebecca Huss-Ashmore, Solomon H. Katz
R3,501 Discovery Miles 35 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1991. Commissioned by the Task Force on African Famine of the American Anthropological Association, this the second part of a project examining the causes of food system failure in Africa and the effects of attempts to remedy the situation. It evaluates the often-retrogressive results of foreign aid to African nations and offers an anthropological perspective on how to reverse this trend. The contributors emphasize integrating all development programs with the regional customs and traditions already in place that have thus far allowed its people to cope with food and water shortages. In the past, various strategies have failed due to misunderstandings and incorrect assumptions concerning gender roles, food consumption habits, social relations, kinship networks, land use and government function. New understanding of the culture must be complemented with multifaceted programs incorporating education, a concern for grass-roots opinion and control, attention to production and consumption patterns, and various forms of broad-spectrum integrated development. The uniqueness research is recommended for all who are concerned about worldwide malnutrition and those who understand the need to recognize local traditions as resources that must be included in any successful development program.

Why Does Development Fail in Resource Rich Economies - The Catch 22 of Mineral Wealth (Paperback): Elissaios Papyrakis Why Does Development Fail in Resource Rich Economies - The Catch 22 of Mineral Wealth (Paperback)
Elissaios Papyrakis
R1,428 Discovery Miles 14 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There has been a lot of interest within the scientific and policy communities in the 'resource curse'; that is, the tendency of mineral rich economies to turn into development failures. Yet, after more than 20 years of intensive research and action, 'the curse' still lingers as a very real global problem, because of volatile mineral prices, bad governance and conflict. This book incorporates current original research on the resource curse (from some of the most prominent contributors to this literature), combined with a critical reflection on the current stock of knowledge. It is a unique attempt to provide a more holistic and interdisciplinary picture of the resource curse and its multi-scale effects. This edited volume reflects the current academic diversity that characterises the resource curse literature with a mix of different methodological approaches (both quantitative and qualitative analyses) and a diverse geographical focus (Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, global). Taken together the studies emphasize the complexities and conditionalities of the 'curse' - its presence/intensity being largely context-specific, depending on the type of resources, socio-political institutions and linkages with the rest of the economy and society. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.

Mining and Development - Foreign-Financed Mines in Australia, Ireland, Papua New Guinea and Zambia (Paperback): Ciaran... Mining and Development - Foreign-Financed Mines in Australia, Ireland, Papua New Guinea and Zambia (Paperback)
Ciaran O'Faircheallaigh
R1,140 Discovery Miles 11 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, first published in 1984, examines the economics and political issues raised by foreign investment in mineral development. It is an attempt to identify, as far as possible, what occurs in and between countries when foreign investments are made in mineral development, concentrating on two main themes: on the nature of the transactions which constitute the process of foreign investment on the physical level - money and instruments of credit, objects, information and people as they cross national boundaries - and on the nature of the relationships which are created between foreign investors and governments in the countries where the investments are made. The author argues that the nature of physical transactions plays a crucial role in determining the character of host country-foreign investor relations, and the policies and attitudes adopted by host country authorities exercise an important influence, in turn, on the physical effects of foreign investments. As such, the book constitutes a comprehensive overview of the economic and political factors involved in mining and its development.

Surface Modeling - High Accuracy and High Speed Methods (Paperback): Tian-Xiang Yue Surface Modeling - High Accuracy and High Speed Methods (Paperback)
Tian-Xiang Yue
R2,463 Discovery Miles 24 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although GIS provides powerful functionality for spatial analysis, data overlay and storage, these spatially oriented systems lack the ability to represent temporal dynamics, which is a major impediment to its use in surface modeling. However, rapid development of computing technology in recent years has made real-time spatial analysis and real-time data visualization become realizable. Based on newly developed methods, Surface Modeling: High Accuracy and High Speed Methods explores solutions to big-error and slow-efficiency problems, two critical challenges that have long plagued those working in with geographical information system (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD). By developing high accuracy and high speed methods for surface modeling, the book builds a bridge between the mathematical-oriented theory of surface modeling and the user-oriented application where the user is actually able to retrieve information on the method itself. The author examines a novel method of high accuracy surface modeling (HASM) in terms of the fundamental theorem of surfaces. He then analyzes the coefficient matrix and develops an adaptive method of HASM (HASM-AM), a multi-grade method of HASM (HASM-MG), and an adjustment method of HASM (HASM-AD). He uses numerical tests and real world studies to demonstrate that HASM-AM, HASM-MG, and HASM-AD have highly accelerated computational speed, especially for simulations with huge computational work. Building on this, the book discusses a HASM-based method for dynamic simulation (HASM-FDS), and then applies HASM methods to simulate terrains, climate change, ecosystem change, land cover, and soil properties. It demonstrates HASM's potential for simulating population distribution, human carrying capacity, ecosystem services, ecological diversity, change detection, and wind velocity. The book concludes with a discussion of the problems that exist in surface modeling on a global level and evaluates possible solutions to these problems.

The Permafrost Environment (Hardcover): Stuart A Harris The Permafrost Environment (Hardcover)
Stuart A Harris
R3,077 Discovery Miles 30 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1986, The Permafrost Environment examines how the search for oil, gas and minerals in the arctic region instigated new and vitally important needs to understand the permafrost environment. The construction of roads, airfields, buildings and pipelines in this inhospitable environment has posed enormous problems for engineers and geologists. This book is a comprehensive review of the nature of the permafrost environment and its utilization. It looks at environmental processes and their effects and examines the management problems which result. It provides a detailed look at how normal procedures for construction etc. need to be modified to cope with the special conditions and it gives examples from throughout the arctic region, including Canada, Siberia, Alaska, Greenland and Northern Scandinavia.

Soul Full of Coal Dust - A Fight for Breath and Justice in Appalachia (Hardcover): Chris Hamby Soul Full of Coal Dust - A Fight for Breath and Justice in Appalachia (Hardcover)
Chris Hamby
R749 R678 Discovery Miles 6 780 Save R71 (9%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Decades have passed since black lung disease was recognized as a national disgrace and Congress was pushed to take legislative action. Since then, however, not much has changed. Big coal companies-along with their allies in the legal and medical professions-have continually flouted the law and exposed miners to deadly amounts of coal dust, while also systematically denying benefits to miners who suffer and die because of their jobs. Indeed, these men and their families, with little access to education, legal resources, and other employment options, have long been fighting to wrench even modest compensation and medical costs from our nation's biggest mining interests-all to combat a disease that could have been eradicated years ago. Tracing their heroic stories back to the very beginning, Chris Hamby, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on this issue, gives us a deeply troubling yet ultimately triumphant work that promises to do for Black Lung what Beth Macy did for the opioid epidemic. From corporate offices and mine shafts, to hospital beds and rural clinics, Soul Full of Coal Dust becomes a legal and medical thriller that brilliantly traces how a powerless band of laborers-alongside a small group of lawyers and doctors, often working out of their homes or in rural clinics and tiny offices-challenged one of the world's most powerful forces, Big Coal, and won. Full of the rich and complex atmosphere of Appalachia and packed with tales of those who have toiled in the mines of West Virginia, Soul Full of Coal Dust Sis a necessary and timely book about injustice and resistance.

The Economics of Agri-Environmental Policy, Volume II (Paperback): Richard D. Horan, Sandra S. Batie The Economics of Agri-Environmental Policy, Volume II (Paperback)
Richard D. Horan, Sandra S. Batie
R817 Discovery Miles 8 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This two-volume set collects key essays examining economic theory, methods, and issues salient to agri-environmental policy in the US and in Europe, as well as in other countries. The topics under discussion are arranged thematically and include theoretical, numerical and empirical works; all are grounded in policy and economics. The introduction to these volumes reviews the evolution of agri-environmental policies, with an important focus on the history of US policy and European agri-environmental policy. A key feature within this is the importance of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US, particularly its move towards more 'market-based incentives' from the 1980s onwards. Within the European context, the effects of the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) on agri-environmental programmes and schemes within the member states, are discussed. Significantly, the essays republished here have provided the knowledge base that has influenced further applied work, creating an influential impact on policy development.

Mineral Resources and Basic Industries in the People's Republic of China (Hardcover): K. P Wang Mineral Resources and Basic Industries in the People's Republic of China (Hardcover)
K. P Wang
R4,496 Discovery Miles 44 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1977. Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. More recently, in the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should gain further momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals has brought the PRC prominence not only in the area of industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially in petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. A very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production, and its export metals are well known. The need to know about Chinese mineral developments and the intense interest in them have prompted Dr. Wang's study. Emphasizing the world significance of Chinese minerals, he reviews the history of growth in the PRC' s mineral industry and its present supply position; evaluates policy considerations and regional technical factors affecting mineral development; and assesses the PRC's mineral trade and its efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and new technology.

Learning and Innovation in Natural Resource Based Industries (Hardcover): Allan Dahl Andersen, Anabel Marin Learning and Innovation in Natural Resource Based Industries (Hardcover)
Allan Dahl Andersen, Anabel Marin
R4,494 Discovery Miles 44 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book develops and articulates a new perspective on the relationship between natural resources and development by foregrounding issues of innovation, knowledge, and industrial dynamics. Despite growing academic attention to the relationship between economic development and natural resources in social sciences, the issue has received rather limited attention in the field of Innovation Studies. This is problematic given the centrality of innovation and technological change for growth and development. Against that background, this book makes three contributions. Firstly, it summarizes and synthesizes existing insights about learning and innovation in Natural Resource Based Industries. Secondly, it develops new insights based on original research work. Thirdly, it distils and explains the remaining research challenges in the field. Containing important insights for researchers, businesses, and policymakers, this book will be useful to all those with an interest in navigating a natural resource based development pathway. This book was originally published as a special issue of Innovation and Development.

Concrete Solutions (Paperback): Michael Grantham, Carmelo Majorana, Valentina Salomoni Concrete Solutions (Paperback)
Michael Grantham, Carmelo Majorana, Valentina Salomoni
R2,375 Discovery Miles 23 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Concrete repair continues to be a subject of major interest to engineers and technologists worldwide. The concrete repair budget for the UK alone currently runs at some UKP 220 per annum. Some estimates have indicated that, worldwide, in 2010 the expenditure for maintenance and repair work will represent about 85% of the total expenditure in the construction field. It has been forecast that, in the same year in the USA, 50 billion dollars will be spent just for the restoration of deteriorated bridges and viaducts. An understanding of the latest techniques in repair and testing and inspection is thus crucial to the international construction industry. This book, with contributions from 34 countries, brings together the best in research, practical application, strategy and theory relating to concrete repair, testing and inspection, fire damage, composites and electro-chemical repair.

Deindustrialization and Reindustrialization in Romania - Economic Strategy Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Luminita... Deindustrialization and Reindustrialization in Romania - Economic Strategy Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Luminita Chivu, Constantin Ciutacu, George Georgescu
R3,986 Discovery Miles 39 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyses the multidimensional condition of the Romanian industrial landscape, which played host to a multitude of demo-economic, financial, trade, and trans- and inter-sectoral development practices before the intense period of European deindustrialisation. The authors stress the need to recognise the economic importance of industry and renewed investment in infrastructure, tracing its impact on GDP, growth and labour productivity. With a focus on R&D, technological innovations and government funding, this volume highlights a strategy for the reindustrialisation, with consistent enablers, of Romania that can also be applied to other EU countries to ensure positive economic development in the context of new European and international policies. Awarded the prize for best book in Economics published in the academic year 2017-2018 by the Romanian Association of Economics Faculties (AFER).

The Devil Is Here in These Hills - West Virginia's Coal Miners and Their Battle for Freedom (Paperback): James Green The Devil Is Here in These Hills - West Virginia's Coal Miners and Their Battle for Freedom (Paperback)
James Green
R469 R442 Discovery Miles 4 420 Save R27 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From before the dawn of the twentieth century until the arrival of the New Deal, one of the most protracted and deadly labor struggles in American history was waged in West Virginia. On one side were powerful corporations and industrialists whose millions bought political influence and armed guards for their company towns. On the other side were 50,000 mine workers, the nation's largest labor union, and the legendary "miners' angel," Mother Jones. Attempts to unionize were met with stiff resistance. Fundamental rights were bent, then broken, and the violence evolved from bloody skirmishes to open armed conflict. The fight for civil rights and unionization in West Virginia verged on civil war and stretched from the creeks and hollows to the courts and the U.S. Senate. In The Devil Is Here in These Hills, celebrated labor historian James Green tells this story like never before.

Industrial Policy and the Transformation of the Colonial Economy in Africa - The Zambian Experience (Hardcover): Horman Chitonge Industrial Policy and the Transformation of the Colonial Economy in Africa - The Zambian Experience (Hardcover)
Horman Chitonge
R4,508 Discovery Miles 45 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Industrial Policy and the Transformation of the Colonial Economy in Africa offers an in-depth analysis of the role industrial policy can play in the transformation of African economies. Using examples from Zambia's industrial development experience, this book illustrates that core features of the colonial economy have not just survived six decades of independence in most African countries, but they have continued to shape the nature, scope and pace of economic activities on the continent. The book argues that since the colonial economy in Africa was not intended to serve the interests of Africans, it is imperative that the structures and the underlying rationale of the colonial economy are radically reoriented if economic activities in Africa are to benefit the majority of Africans. Drawing from the Zambian experience, the book shows that the transformation of the colonial economy in Africa is urgently needed. Whilst this has proved to be difficult over the past six decades, it can be done. The book outlines a specific type of industrial policy, Frontier Industrial Policy, as a key instrument for transforming the structure of African economies. At a time when economic growth across Africa is under considerable pressure due to COVID-19, the insights in this book will be of interest to researchers across Economics, Development, Postcolonial Studies, and African Studies.
