The practice of dermatopathology has evolved from viewing predominantly haematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained sections through the microscope to include an array of more specialized tests. These are used as stand-alone tests or in addition to the H&E. Diagnostic Dermatopathology: A Guide to Ancillary Tests Beyond the H&E is a practical guide to the most important of these new diagnostic techniques. Aside from a brief review of H&E in the Introduction, the focus of the book is on the wide range of more recent ancillary tests commonly used by clinicians, including sections on special stains, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy and molecular testing. Each section describes why each of these tests is performed, how to use them and how to interpret the results they provide. Abundantly illustrated with colour photographs, diagrams and algorithms Diagnostic Dermatopathology: A Guide to Ancillary Tests Beyond the H&E is packed with practical guidance on commonly-faced diagnostic dilemmas, how the tests described can be used to resolve them and how to avoid pitfalls in the diagnostic process. The book is an essential resource for trainee and practicing dermatopathologists, dermatologists and pathologists seeking an accessible guide to the diagnostic methods which are increasingly important in dermatopathology and which go beyond the H&E. Key features Covers the full range of diagnostic tests in dermatopathology, aside from H&E, with a focus on practical clinical information such as how to run the test, when to use it and how to interpret the results Includes special stains, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, molecular testing and point of care tests including potassium hydroxide preparations, mineral oil preparations, and Tzanck smears Single author with hand-picked specialist contributors provide a consistent approach to the subject, replete with diagnostic tips and clinical advice based on extensive personal experience

New technologies and medical treatments have complicated questions such as how to determine the moment when someone has died. The result is a failure to establish consensus on the definition of death and the criteria by which the moment of death is determined. This creates confusion and disagreement not only among medical, legal, and insurance professionals but also within families faced with difficult decisions concerning their loved ones. Distinguished bioethicists Robert M. Veatch and Lainie F. Ross argue that the definition of death is not a scientific question but a social one rooted in religious, philosophical, or social beliefs. Drawing on history and recent court cases, the authors detail three potential definitions of death--the whole-brain concept; the circulatory, or somatic, concept; and the higher-brain concept. Because no one definition of death commands majority support, it creates a major public policy problem. The authors cede that society needs a default definition to proceed in certain cases, like those involving organ transplantation. But they also argue the decision-making process must give individuals the space to choose among plausible definitions of death according to personal beliefs. Taken in part from the authors' latest edition of their groundbreaking work on transplantation ethics, Defining Death is an indispensable guide for professionals in medicine, law, insurance, public policy, theology, and philosophy as well as lay people trying to decide when they want to be treated as dead.

An introductory chapter provides a brief overview of cranial nerve anatomy and function, skull base anatomy, classification of pathologies, and imaging approaches. Each of the twelve chapters that follow is devoted to in-depth coverage of a different cranial nerve. These chapters open with detailed discussion of the various functions of each nerve and normal anatomy. The authors then describe common lesions and present a series of cases that are complemented by CT images and MRIs to illustrate disease entities that result in cranial nerve dysfunction. Features

The vitreous body long has been the most mysterious of all ocular structures, owing perhaps to its seeming simplicity. There have been few concerted, sustained efforts to unravel the mysteries of how vitreous is composed and what role it plays in normal physiology as well as pathology. Over the years, however, many studies have produced important findings concerning vitreous biochemistry, structure, physiology, and pathobiology. Published on the 25th anniversary of Sebag's first book on Vitreous, this second installment is nearly five times longer than its predecessor, reflecting how much has been learned in the past quarter century. This well-constructed compendium not only addresses the most current scientific knowledge, but also reviews clinical perspectives in a manner that lends richness to the scope of the book. Written by 90 authors, this book has 56 chapters organized into 7 sections: Biochemistry; Anatomy, Development, and Aging; Pathology/Pathobiology; Physiology and Phamacotherapy; Posterior Vitreo-Retinal Surgery; Peripheral Vitreo-Retinal Surgery; and Pharmacologic Vitreolysis. With a foreword by Coleman & Lincoff and an introduction by Wallace Foulds, Sebag's latest tome on vitreous is destined to be the authoritative text for years to come. |
