Biomaterials for Clinical Applications (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Sujata K. Bhatia Biomaterials for Clinical Applications (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Sujata K. Bhatia
R2,691 Discovery Miles 26 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Biomaterials for Clinical Applications is organized according to the World Health Organization 's report of the top 11 causes of death worldwide, and lays out opportunities for both biomaterials scientists and physicians to tackle each of these leading contributors to mortality. The introductory chapter discusses the global burden of disease. Each of the subsequent eleven chapters focuses on a specific disease process, beginning with the leading cause of death worldwide, cardiovascular disease. The chapters start with describing diseases where clinical needs are most pressing, and then envisions how biomaterials can be designed to address these needs, instead of the more technologically centered approached favored by most books in the field. This book, then, should appeal to chemical engineers and bioengineers who are designing new biomaterials for drug delivery and vaccine delivery, as well as tissue engineering.

Molecular Interactions in Bioseparations (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): That T. Ngo Molecular Interactions in Bioseparations (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
That T. Ngo
R5,594 Discovery Miles 55 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Rapid advances in molecular biology have accelerated the production of a great number of protein-based therapeutic agents. The major cost in producing these proteins appears to be associated with their purification from the complex mixture of the crude extract. A major challenge to the protein biochemist and the biochemical engineer is the development of rapid, efficient, and cost-effective purification systems. This volume presents state-of-the-art reviews of current methods used in the purifica tion of biological macromolecules that are based on molecular interactions. Thus, the major emphasis is placed on affinity-related techniques. Part I provides a general introduction to affinity chromatography and includes a chapter describing an interesting new technique called "slalom chromatography" for DNA fractionations. Affinity chromatography using molecules of biological origin as the affinity ligand is covered in Part II. Part III describes the use of a special class of biomolecules, antibodies, as affinity ligands. Affinity chromatography with biomimetic ligands is discussed in Part IV. Newer concepts and their applications in bioseparation are presented in Part V. Part VI covers affinity-related techniques such as affinity-based extracorporeal shunts, affinity electrophoresis, affinity precipitation, and affinity extraction. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the authors, who are recognized experts in their respective fields, for their cooperation and contributions. I thank the editorial staff of Plenum Press for their professionalism, and Mary Phillips Born, Senior Editor, for her encouragement. The support of my family (Ping and Peilin) made it possible to complete editing this book. That T."

The Biology of Subcellular Nitric Oxide (Hardcover, 2012 Ed.): Tamas Roszer The Biology of Subcellular Nitric Oxide (Hardcover, 2012 Ed.)
Tamas Roszer
R4,022 Discovery Miles 40 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book fills in a gap in the NO literature. Recent progress in the field of NO-biology shows that NO is generated within distinct cell compartments, including specific plasma membrane regions, mitochondria, chloroplasts, peroxisomes, the Golgi-complex and intracellular membrane systems. NO synthesis plays specific roles in these compartments and, in turn, cell organelles also control intracellular NO levels. This monograph focuses on the roles played by the subcellular NO-signaling microdomains in the prokaryote-, fungus-, plant- and animal cells and shows how NO behaves as an intracellular signal in distinct cellular environments. This monograph also provides a summary of our knowledge on how NO synthesis came through evolution to be associated with organelles and subcellular compartments. Promotes the novel ideas that some functions of NO and its associations with subcellular units have been conserved during the evolution of the cell. A special chapter is dedicated to the biomedical relevance of subcellular NO synthesis, and this chapter also discusses the evidence that altered compartmentalization of NO-producing enzymes causes disease.

Enzymes in Nonaqueous Solvents - Methods and Protocols (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Evgeny N. Vulfson Enzymes in Nonaqueous Solvents - Methods and Protocols (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Evgeny N. Vulfson
R4,147 Discovery Miles 41 470 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Enzymatic catalysis has gained considerable attention in recent years as an efficient tool in the preparation of natural products, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and food ingredients. The high selectivity and mild reaction con- tions associated with enzymatic transformations have made this approach an attractive alternative in the synthesis of complex bioactive compounds, which are often difficult to obtain by standard chemical routes. However, the maj- ity of organic compounds are not very soluble in water, which was traditi- ally perceived as the only suitable reaction medium for the application of biocatalysts. The realization that most enzymes can function perfectly well under nearly anhydrous conditions and, in addition, display a number of useful properties, e. g. , highly enhanced stability and different selectivity, has d- matically widened the scope of their application to the organic synthesis. Another great attraction of using organic solvents rather than water as a reaction solvent is the ability to perform synthetic transformations with re- tively inexpensive hydrolytic enzymes. It is worth reminding the reader that in vivo, the synthetic and hydrolytic pathways are catalyzed by different enzymes. However, elimination of water from the reaction mixture enables the "reversal" of hydrolytic enzymes and thus avoids the use of the expensive cofactors or activated substrates that are required for their synthetic count- parts.

The first contribution reviews the occurrence of xanthine alkaloids in the plant kingdom and the elucidation of the caffeine biosynthesis pathway, providing details of the N-methyltransferases, belonging to the motif B' methyltransferase family which catalyze three steps in the four step pathway leading from xanthosine to caffeine. The second contribution in this book provides a background on the molecule and related compounds and update knowledge on the most recent advances in Iboga alkaloids. The third contribution presents a comprehensive analysis of frequently occurring errors with respect to 13C NMR spectroscopic data and proposes a straightforward protocol to eliminate a high percentage of the most obvious errors.

Cytotoxic, Mutagenic and Carcinogenic Potential of Heavy Metals Related to Human Environment (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): N.... Cytotoxic, Mutagenic and Carcinogenic Potential of Heavy Metals Related to Human Environment (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
N. Hadjiliadis
R1,532 Discovery Miles 15 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Environmental pollution is one of the main problems to confront humanity, with the heavy metals occupying a leading role among the most pernicious pollutants. The metals cause cancer and other sicknesses. Their cytotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic potentials are not fully understood, and any thorough investigation demands the combined efforts of scientists drawn from many different disciplines. But the effects of heavy metals are not all negative: some, like cis-DDP, and some ruthenium and tin complexes, have antitumour activity. The idea underlying the present work is therefore to present a multidisciplinary perspective on heavy metals in the environment, affording a better understanding of their action on human organisms and health, aiming to make them less polluting and more environmentally friendly.

Sustaining Life on Planet Earth: Metalloenzymes Mastering Dioxygen and Other Chewy Gases (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Peter M. H.... Sustaining Life on Planet Earth: Metalloenzymes Mastering Dioxygen and Other Chewy Gases (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Peter M. H. Kroneck, Martha E. Sosa Torres
R4,814 Discovery Miles 48 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

MILS-15 provides an up-to-date review of the metalloenzymes involved in the activation, production, and conversion of molecular oxygen as well as the functionalization of the chemically inert gases methane and ammonia. Found either in aerobes (humans, animals, plants, microorganisms) or in anaerobes (so-called "impossible bacteria") these enzymes employ preferentially iron and copper at their active sites, in order to conserve energy by redox-driven proton pumps, to convert methane to methanol, or ammonia to hydroxylamine or other compounds. When it comes to the light-driven production of molecular oxygen, the tetranuclear manganese cluster of photosystem II must be regarded as the key player. However, dioxygen can also be produced in the dark, by heme iron-dependent dismutation of oxyanions. Metalloenzymes Mastering Dioxygen and Other Chewy Gases is a vibrant research area based mainly on structural and microbial biology, inorganic biological chemistry, and environmental biochemistry. All this is covered in an authoritative manner in 7 stimulating chapters, written by 21 internationally recognized experts, and supported by nearly 1100 references, informative tables, and over 140 illustrations (many in color). MILS-15 provides excellent information for teaching; it is also closely related to MILS-14, The Metal-Driven Biogeochemistry of Gaseous Compounds in the Environment. Peter M. H. Kroneck is a bioinorganic chemist who is exploring the role of transition metals in biology, with a focus on functional and structural aspects of microbial iron, copper, and molybdenum enzymes and their impact on the biogeochemical cyles of nitrogen and sulfur. Martha E. Sosa Torres is an inorganic chemist, with special interests in magnetic properties of newly synthesized transition metal complexes and their reactivity towards molecular oxygen, applying kinetic, electrochemical, and spectroscopic techniques.

Virally Infected Cells (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): J.Robin Harris Virally Infected Cells (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
J.Robin Harris
R5,398 Discovery Miles 53 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cellular virology has made tremendous advances in the past decade due to the availability and application of new immunological techniques together with the vast range of biochemical techniques and the continued impact of transmission electron microscopy. The chapters contained in this volume provide significant coverage of the subject of cellular virology as a whole. Considerable overall emphasis is placed upon the membrane biochemistry of viral proteins and glycoproteins within the infected cell. In the opening chapter Edouard Kurstak and his colleagues provide a useful survey on the detection of viral antigens and antibodies by immunoassays. This chapter, with its emphasis on the important role of immunology in present-day virology, sets the scene for the volume. Following this is an exciting presentation from Stefan Hoglund and his colleagues on ISCOMs and immunostimulation with viral antigens. This unique approach is already proving to be of value, particularly in animal virology. A somewhat pharmacological diversion appears in Chapter 3, by Kazukiyo Onodera and his colleagues, in which the biological activity of the damavaricin C derivatives is discussed. This chapter provides a link between the biochemical and the chemotherapeutic approach in cellular virology. Yet another specialist area is covered in Chapter 4 by Otto Schmidt and hnke Schuchmann-Feddersen, who discuss the role of virus-like particles in para site-host interactions of insects. Contributing a strong biomedical emphasis to the volume is the provocative chapter by Abraham Karpas on human leukemia and retroviruses."

Aestivation - Molecular and Physiological Aspects (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Carlos Arturo Navas, Jose Eduardo Carvalho Aestivation - Molecular and Physiological Aspects (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Carlos Arturo Navas, Jose Eduardo Carvalho
R4,046 Discovery Miles 40 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Numerous animal species live in environments characterized by a seasonal reduction in the availability of water, which often but not always occurs when temperatures are highest. For many such animals, survival during the toughest season requires spending long periods of time in a rather inactive state known as aestivation. But aestivation is much more than remaining inactive. Successful aestivation requires the selection of a proper microhabitat, variable degrees of metabolic arrest and responsiveness to external stimuli, the ability to sense the proper time of year for emergence, the preservation of inactive tissue, and much more. So, aestivation involves a complex collection of behaviors, ecological associations and physiological adjustments that vary across species in their type, magnitude and course. This book seeks to explore the phenomenon of aestivation from different perspectives and levels of organization, ranging from microhabitat selection to genetic control of physiological adjustments. It brings together authors from across the world working on different systematic groups, approaches, and questions, but who are all ultimately working to better understand the complex issue of aestivation.

Biotic Type Antioxidants: the prospective search area for novel chemical drugs (Hardcover): Gennady Zaikov, Parfenov Biotic Type Antioxidants: the prospective search area for novel chemical drugs (Hardcover)
Gennady Zaikov, Parfenov
R5,398 Discovery Miles 53 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The discovery of molecular and cellular mechanisms of pathology, together with the present data on drug treatment result in enhanced drug design and testing. The known mechanisms of biological activity as displayed by ascorbic acid and other natural reductones are the reason that they are considered to be physiologically compatible antioxidants, many of which are trace elements in food. The pharmacological potential of natural antioxidants may be enhanced by chemical modification. Biotic antioxidants possess an important potential to be a reliable basis of the development of new multipurpose drugs, within the framework of existing technological structures. This book shows approaches for possible use of these natural antioxidants. In particular, such an approach is described for the case of the design of superoxide dismutase models with anti-tumour activity.

Bioenergetics - Energy Conservation and Conversion (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Gunter Schafer, Harvey Penefsky Bioenergetics - Energy Conservation and Conversion (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Gunter Schafer, Harvey Penefsky
R5,206 Discovery Miles 52 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The fermentation of sugar by cell-free yeast extracts was demonstrated more than a century ago by E. Buchner (Nobel Prize 1907). Buchner's observations put an end to previous animistic theories regarding cellular life. It became clear that metabolism and all cellular functions should be accessible to explication in chemical terms. Equally important for an understanding of living systems was the concept, explained in physical terms, that all living things could be cons- ered as energy converters [E. Schroedinger (Nobel Prize 1933)] which generate complexity at the expense of an increase in entropy in their environment. Bioenergetics was established as an essential branch of the biochemical sciences by the investigations into the chemistry of photosynthesis in i- lated plant organelles [O. Warburg (Nobel Prize 1931)] and by the discovery that mitochondria were the morphological equivalent that catalyzed cellular respiration. The ?eld of bioenergetics also encompasses a large variety of ad- tional processes such as the molecular mechanisms of muscle contraction, the structure and driving mechanisms of microbial ?agellar motors, the energetics of solute transport, the extrusion of macromolecules across membranes, the transformation of quanta of light into visual information and the maintenance of complex synaptic communications. There are many other examples which, in most cases, may perform secondary energy transformations, utilizing - ergy stored either in the cellular ATP pool or in electrochemical membrane potentials.

Asif M. Iqbal Qureshi, Zahoor Ahmad Dar, Shabir Hussain Wani
R4,040 Discovery Miles 40 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Development of superior crops that have consistent performance in quality and in quantity has not received the same emphasis in the field of genetics and breeding as merited. Specialty trait requires special focus to propagate. Yet basic germplasm and breeding methodologies optimized to improve crops are often applied in the development of improved specialty types. However, because of the standards required for specialty traits, methods of development and improvement are usually more complex than those for common commodity crops. The same standards of performance are desired, but the genetics of the specialty traits often impose breeding criteria distinct from those of non-specialty possessing crops. Specifically, quality improvement programs have unique characteristics that require careful handling and monitoring during their development for specific needs. Adding value either via alternative products from the large volumes of grain produced or development of specialty types is of interest to producers and processors. This work assimilates the most topical results about quality improvement with contemporary plant breeding approaches. The objective of this book is to provide a summary of the germplasm, methods of development, and specific problems involved for quality breeding. In total, fourteen chapters, written by leading scientists involved in crop improvement research, provide comprehensive coverage of the major factors impacting specialty crop improvement.
