VLSI - Compatible Implementations for Artificial Neural Networks (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Sied Mehdi Fakhraie, Kenneth C. Smith VLSI - Compatible Implementations for Artificial Neural Networks (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Sied Mehdi Fakhraie, Kenneth C. Smith
R2,770 Discovery Miles 27 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

VLSI-Compatible Implementations for Artificial Neural Networks introduces the basic premise of the authors' approach to biologically-inspired and VLSI-compatible definition, simulation, and implementation of artificial neural networks. In addition, the book develops a set of guidelines for general hardware implementation of ANNs. These guidelines are then used to find solutions for the usual difficulties encountered in any potential work, and as guidelines by which to reach the best compromise when several options exist. Furthermore, system-level consequences of using the proposed techniques in future submicron technologies with almost-linear MOS devices are discussed. While the major emphasis in this book is to develop neural networks optimized for compatibility with their implementation media, the work has also been extended to the design and implementation of a fully-quadratic ANN based on the desire to have network definitions epitomized for both efficient discrimination of closed-boundary circular areas and ease of implementation in a CMOS technology. VLSI-Compatible Implementations for Artificial Neural Networks implements a comprehensive approach which starts with an analytical evaluation of specific artificial networks. This provides a clear geometrical interpretation of the behavior of different variants of these networks. In combination with the guidelines developed towards a better final implementation, these concepts have allowed the authors to conquer various problems encountered and to make effective compromises. Then, to facilitate the investigation of the models needed when more difficult problems must be faced, a custom simulating program for various cases is developed. Finally, in order to demonstrate the authors' findings and expectations, several VLSI integrated circuits have been designed, fabricated, and tested. VLSI-Compatible Implementations for Artificial Neural Networks serves as an excellent reference source and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

Klaas-Jan De Langen, Johan Huijsing
R5,282 Discovery Miles 52 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Compact Low-Voltage and High-Speed CMOS, BiCMOS and Bipolar Operational Amplifiers discusses the design of integrated operational amplifiers that approach the limits of low supply voltage or very high bandwidth. The resulting realizations span the whole field of applications from micro-power CMOS VLSI amplifiers to 1-GHz bipolar amplifiers. The book presents efficient circuit topologies in order to combine high performance with simple solutions. In total twelve amplifier realizations are discussed. Two bipolar amplifiers are discussed, a 1-GHz operational amplifier and an amplifier with a high ratio between the maximum output current and the quiescent current. Five amplifiers have been designed in CMOS technology, extremely compact circuits that can operate on supply voltages down to one gate-source voltage and two saturation voltages which equals about 1.4 V and, ultimate-low-voltage amplifiers that can operate on supply voltages down to one gate-source voltage and one saturation voltage which amounts to about 1.2 V. In BiCMOS technology five amplifiers have been designed. The first two amplifiers are based on a compact topology. Two other amplifiers are designed to operate on low supply voltages down to 1.3 V. The final amplifier has a unity-gain frequency of 200 MHz and can operate down to 2.5 V. Compact Low-Voltage and High-Speed CMOS, BiCMOS and Bipolar Operational Amplifiers is intended for the professional analog designer. Also, it is suitable as a text book for advanced courses in amplifier design.

D. Jed Harrison, Albert van den Berg
R5,416 Discovery Miles 54 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Micro-TAS '98 is the third of a series of symposia initiated by MBSA (University of Twente) in 1994, on the subject of miniaturizing, and integrating within a monolithic structure, the chemical, biochemical and biological procedures commonly used for analysis and synthesis. The primary tool used to develop micro-total analysis systems (mu- TAS) has been micro-photolithographic patterning and micromachining. These powerful tools of Micro System Technology (MST or MEMS) have been applied in highly imaginative ways to develop microchip chemical arrays, fully integrated pump and fluid manifolds, and electrokinetically driven micro-channel systems to be used for genetic analysis, clinical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, and to integrate reactions as diverse as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the large volume, partial oxidation of ammonia. This text illustrates the rapid expansion of the field, the extensive industrial involvement, the increasing number of participating researchers, the expanding range of concepts and applications that utilize MST and microfluidic devices, and new MST-compatible plastic micro-machining to meet the needs of the life science community. This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Micro-Total Analysis Systems, mu-TAS '98, held on October 13-16 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. State-of-the-art invited and contributed papers presented by the world's leading mu- TAS research groups provide a highly informative picture of the growth since 1994 and of the promising future of this exciting and rapidly growing field.

Analog VLSI Integration of Massive Parallel Signal Processing Systems (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Peter Kinget, Michiel Steyaert Analog VLSI Integration of Massive Parallel Signal Processing Systems (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Peter Kinget, Michiel Steyaert
R4,139 Discovery Miles 41 390 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When comparing conventional computing architectures to the architectures of biological neural systems, we find several striking differences. Conventional computers use a low number of high performance computing elements that are programmed with algorithms to perform tasks in a time sequenced way; they are very successful in administrative applications, in scientific simulations, and in certain signal processing applications. However, the biological systems still significantly outperform conventional computers in perception tasks, sensory data processing and motory control. Biological systems use a completely dif ferent computing paradigm: a massive network of simple processors that are (adaptively) interconnected and operate in parallel. Exactly this massively parallel processing seems the key aspect to their success. On the other hand the development of VLSI technologies provide us with technological means to implement very complicated systems on a silicon die. Especially analog VLSI circuits in standard digital technologies open the way for the implement at ion of massively parallel analog signal processing systems for sensory signal processing applications and for perception tasks. In chapter 1 the motivations behind the emergence of the analog VLSI of massively parallel systems is discussed in detail together with the capabilities and imitations of VLSI technologies and the required research and developments. Analog parallel signal processing drives for the development of very com pact, high speed and low power circuits. An important technologicallimitation in the reduction of the size of circuits and the improvement of the speed and power consumption performance is the device inaccuracies or device mismatch."

Lower-Dimensional Systems and Molecular Electronics (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): Robert M. Metzger, Peter R. Day, George C.... Lower-Dimensional Systems and Molecular Electronics (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
Robert M. Metzger, Peter R. Day, George C. Papavassiliou
R5,554 Discovery Miles 55 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume represents the written account of the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Lower-Dimensional Systems and Molecular Electronics" held at Hotel Spetses, Spetses Island, Greece from 12 June to 23 June 1989. The goal of the Institute was to demonstrate the breadth of chemical and physical knowledge that has been acquired in the last 20 years in inorganic and organic crystals, polymers, and thin films, which exhibit phenomena of reduced dimensionality. The interest in these systems started in the late 1960's with lower-dimensional inorganic conductors, in the early 1970's with quasi-one-dimensional crystalline organic conductors. which by 1979 led to the first organic superconductors, and, in 1977, to the fITSt conducting polymers. The study of monolayer films (Langmuir-Blodgett films) had progressed since the 1930's, but reached a great upsurge in . the early 1980's. The pursuit of non-linear optical phenomena became increasingly popular in the early 1980's, as the attention turned from inorganic crystals to organic films and polymers. And in the last few years the term "moleculw' electronics" has gained ever-increasing acceptance, although it is used in several contexts. We now have organic superconductors with critical temperatures in excess of 10 K, conducting polymers that are soluble and processable, and used commercially; we have films of a few monolayers that have high in-plane electrical conductivity, and polymers that show great promise in photonics; we even have a few devices that function almost at the molecular level.
