Sailesh Bharati, Weihua Zhuang
R3,703 R3,421 Discovery Miles 34 210 Save R282 (8%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents link-layer cooperative frameworks to improve transmission reliability and network throughput of distributed TDMA MAC protocols in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The main objective of this book is to present link-layer node cooperation schemes to enhance the link-layer performance of vehicular networks, in terms of reliability and system throughput. The authors present approaches proposed for the medium access control (MAC) and node cooperation in VANETs. The authors also cover cooperative ADHOC MAC for point-to-point communication between a pair of source and destination nodes, and cooperative relay broadcasting for broadcast services in this book. The performance of node cooperation frameworks is evaluated via mathematical analysis and computer simulations, in comparison with distributed TDMA MAC protocols without cooperation. The proposed node cooperation frameworks enhance the performance of distributed TDMA MAC and make it more robust to tackle the dynamic networking conditions in VANETs. Furthermore, with cooperation enabled transmission, the performance of distributed TMDA MAC is more suitable to support the wide range of mobile applications and their strict service requirements which is discussed in this book. The proposed node cooperation schemes and distributed cooperation decisions can be extended to wireless systems other than distributed TDMA MAC, such as cellular communication, for vehicular communications introduced in this book. This book is useful for researchers from academia and industry, as well as advanced level students interested in vehicular communication networks. It is also useful for professionals and engineers developing applications that use cooperative wireless communication systems.

Functional Structures in Networks - AMLn - A Language for Model Driven Development of Telecom Systems (Hardcover, 2005 ed.):... Functional Structures in Networks - AMLn - A Language for Model Driven Development of Telecom Systems (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Thomas G. Muth
R3,044 Discovery Miles 30 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book describes a method for creating models of telecom systems. The method is intended for practitioning network architects and designers. The method emphasizes modelling the (very complex) functional structure of networks in a way that is independent of any hardware and software design methodology. The method allows designers to express their model in two main views: a generic view and a system view that takes protocols and network configuration issues in account. The idea is to retain a stable view (the generic) in the context of constant changes and large variations within the system view. The expected benefits are large savings in telecom systems development and maintenance. The terminology is domain unique, i.e. based on de-facto telecom terminology. All concepts that are used in modelling are well defined. The purpose with using a telecom-oriented terminology instead of industry-standard methods for software and protocol design (e.g. UML and SDL) is to be able to create models that are expressive and intelligible for network architects and designers. Models are created as graphical models that show the functional and physical structure of networks on different levels of details. Information on properties, including behaviour, are attached to models. A fairly small set of symbols are used in modelling.

Multi-photon Quantum Secure Communication (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Pramode K. Verma, Mayssaa El Rifai, Kam Wai Clifford Chan Multi-photon Quantum Secure Communication (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Pramode K. Verma, Mayssaa El Rifai, Kam Wai Clifford Chan
R4,116 Discovery Miles 41 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores alternative ways of accomplishing secure information transfer with incoherent multi-photon pulses in contrast to conventional Quantum Key Distribution techniques. Most of the techniques presented in this book do not need conventional encryption. Furthermore, the book presents a technique whereby any symmetric key can be securely transferred using the polarization channel of an optical fiber for conventional data encryption. The work presented in this book has largely been practically realized, albeit in a laboratory environment, to offer proof of concept rather than building a rugged instrument that can withstand the rigors of a commercial environment.

Photonic Slot Routing in Optical Transport Networks (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Gosse Wedzinga Photonic Slot Routing in Optical Transport Networks (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Gosse Wedzinga
R2,999 Discovery Miles 29 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

All-optical networking is generally believed to be the only solution for coping with the ever-increasing demands in bandwidth, such as the World Wide Web application.
Optical backbone networks efficiently achieve a high level of traffic aggregation by multiplexing numerous users on circuit-switched wavelength paths - the so-called wavelength routing approach. In contrast, the reduced level of traffic aggregation in access and metro networks makes wavelength routing solutions not adequate. In these network areas, packet-interleaved optical time-division multiplexing with its finer and more dynamic bandwidth allocation is advocated.
The book presents such an approach, known as photonic slot routing. It illustrates how this approach may provide a cost-effective solution to deploying all-optical transport networks, using today's optical device technology. To that end, the author combines DWDM-technology with fixed slot optical switching, and gives a comprehensive description of this approach in which slots are aligned across the wavelengths to form groups of data-flows that propagate as a whole inside the network. Operating algorithms are developed, and network performance is analyzed, both by means of theoretical analysis and many simulations of sample networks.
This work will be of particular interest to researchers and professionals who are active in photonic networking.

Sequence Detection for High-Density Storage Channels (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): Jaekyun Moon, L.Richard Carley Sequence Detection for High-Density Storage Channels (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
Jaekyun Moon, L.Richard Carley
R2,969 Discovery Miles 29 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Magnetic data storage can be viewed as a data communication system. This is not a sUlprising view, considering that data storage is essentially the transfer of data between different times. The past decade has indeed seen rapidly growing interest in applying improved coding and detection techniques to magnetic data storage, a traditional approach to enhance performance of communication channels. Since its inception in the 1930's, the magnetic recording industry has achieved impressive progress in data capacity. This has been made possible mainly by innovations and advances in heads and media design. However, as the demand for higher storage capacity continues in the modem information era, a need arises to explore other possibilities to help meet the ever-growing demand. Advanced coding and detection are one such possibility, providing an efficient, cost-effective means to increase data capacity. In fact, with the advent of modem Ie technology which has enabled real-time implementation of increasingly complex signal processing algorithms, advanced coding and detection are rapidly becoming a major issue in the development of improved data storage products. While there have been remarkable advances in recent years in the areas of both coding and detection for data storage, this book focuses only on data detection, or the processing of readback waveforms to reproduce stored data, in conjunction with the traditional modulation coding method called run length-limited or (d, k) coding."

Izzat Alsmadi, Robert Burdwell, Ahmed Aleroud, Abdallah Wahbeh, Mahmoud Al-Qudah, …
R2,397 Discovery Miles 23 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This textbook presents a practical introduction to information security using the Competency Based Education (CBE) method of teaching. The content and ancillary assessment methods explicitly measure student progress in the three core categories: Knowledge, Skills, and Experience, giving students a balance between background knowledge, context, and skills they can put to work. Students will learn both the foundations and applications of information systems security; safeguarding from malicious attacks, threats, and vulnerabilities; auditing, testing, and monitoring; risk, response, and recovery; networks and telecommunications security; source code security; information security standards; and compliance laws. The book can be used in introductory courses in security (information, cyber, network or computer security), including classes that don't specifically use the CBE method, as instructors can adjust methods and ancillaries based on their own preferences. The book content is also aligned with the Cybersecurity Competency Model, proposed by department of homeland security. The author is an active member of The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), which is led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NICE is a partnership between government, academia, and the private sector focused on cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development.

Adaptive RF Front-Ends for Hand-held Applications (Hardcover, Edition.): Andre Van Bezooijen, Reza Mahmoudi, Arthur H. M. van... Adaptive RF Front-Ends for Hand-held Applications (Hardcover, Edition.)
Andre Van Bezooijen, Reza Mahmoudi, Arthur H. M. van Roermund
R2,967 Discovery Miles 29 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The RF front-end - antenna combination is a vital part of a mobile phone because its performance is very relevant to the link quality between hand-set and cellular network base-stations. The RF front-end performance suffers from changes in operating environment, like hand-effects, that are often unpredictable.

Adaptive RF Front-Ends for Hand-Held Applications presents an analysis on the impact of fluctuating environmental parameters. In order to overcome undesired behavior two different adaptive control methods are treated that make RF frond-ends more resilient: adaptive impedance control, and adaptive power control.

Several adaptive impedance control techniques are discussed, using a priori knowledge on matching network properties, in order to simplify robust 2-dimensional control. A generic protection concept is presented, based on adaptive power control, which improves the ruggedness of a power amplifier or preserves its linearity under extremes. It comprises over-voltage, over-temperature, and under-voltage protection.

Optimal Design of Distributed Control and Embedded Systems (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Arben Cela, Mongi Ben Gaid, Xu-Guang Li,... Optimal Design of Distributed Control and Embedded Systems (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Arben Cela, Mongi Ben Gaid, Xu-Guang Li, Silviu-Iulian Niculescu
R4,389 Discovery Miles 43 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Optimal Design of Distributed Control and Embedded Systems "focuses on the design of special control and scheduling algorithms based on system structural properties as well as on analysis of the influence of induced time-delay on systems performances. It treats the optimal design of distributed and embedded control systems (DCESs) with respect to communication and calculation-resource constraints, quantization aspects, and potential time-delays induced by the associated communication and calculation model.

Particular emphasis is put on optimal control signal scheduling based on the system state. In order to render this complex optimization problem feasible in real time, a time decomposition is based on periodicity induced by the static scheduling is operated. The authors present a co-design approach which subsumes the synthesis of the optimal control laws and the generation of an optimal schedule of control signals on real-time networks as well as the execution of control tasks on a single processor. The authors also operate a control structure modification or a control switching based on a thorough analysis of the influence of the induced time-delay system influence on stability and system performance in order to optimize DCES performance in case of calculation and communication resource limitations. Although the richness and variety of classes of DCES preclude a completely comprehensive treatment or a single best method of approaching them all, this co-design approach has the best chance of rendering this problem feasible and finding the optimal or some sub-optimal solution. The text is rounded out with references to such applications as car suspension and unmanned vehicles.

"Optimal Design of Distributed Control and Embedded Systems" will be of most interest to academic researchers working on the mathematical theory of DCES but the wide range of environments in which they are used also promotes the relevance of the text for control practitioners working in the avionics, automotive, energy-production, space exploration and many other industries."

R. Marcelli, S. a. Nikitov
R1,636 Discovery Miles 16 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the result of the contributions coming from the more than thirty key rd speakers of the 3 international Workshop on Nonlinear Microwave Magnetics held in th Roma, Italy from the 3rd to the 6 of October 1995. Since the 1990, in Ulyanovsk, when the Russian Academy of Sciences promoted the first Workshop of the series, the basic idea was to have a sort of Institutional Meeting collecting Scientists of the Magnetics Community devoted to Spin Wave Electronics at Microwave Frequencies. It was a succesful organization, and the birth of an effective interaction between eastern and western researchers overcame the meaning of the Workshop itself. Three years later, in Irvine, California, 1993, the Spin Wave Community was joined again. It was clear that the growing interest on hot topics of Nonlinear Microwave Magnetics involving both, applicative and fundamental aspects of microwave magnetic media, favoured the organization of further meetings on the same subject. So far, during the social dinner, in the middle between a serious proposal and the joke encouraged by the Californian Wine, Roma was proposed as the third place for the Workshop. Day after day, the joke became serious, and it was possible to solve the financial and logistic problems in time for the predicted deadline.

Fractional Processes and Fractional-Order Signal Processing - Techniques and Applications (Hardcover, 2012): Hu Sheng, Yangquan... Fractional Processes and Fractional-Order Signal Processing - Techniques and Applications (Hardcover, 2012)
Hu Sheng, Yangquan Chen, Tianshuang Qiu
R4,387 Discovery Miles 43 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fractional processes are widely found in science, technology and engineering systems. In Fractional Processes and Fractional-order Signal Processing, some complex random signals, characterized by the presence of a heavy-tailed distribution or non-negligible dependence between distant observations (local and long memory), are introduced and examined from the 'fractional' perspective using simulation, fractional-order modeling and filtering and realization of fractional-order systems. These fractional-order signal processing (FOSP) techniques are based on fractional calculus, the fractional Fourier transform and fractional lower-order moments. Fractional Processes and Fractional-order Signal Processing: presents fractional processes of fixed, variable and distributed order studied as the output of fractional-order differential systems; introduces FOSP techniques and the fractional signals and fractional systems point of view; details real-world-application examples of FOSP techniques to demonstrate their utility; and provides important background material on Mittag-Leffler functions, the use of numerical inverse Laplace transform algorithms and supporting MATLAB (R) codes together with a helpful survey of relevant webpages. Readers will be able to use the techniques presented to re-examine their signals and signal-processing methods. This text offers an extended toolbox for complex signals from diverse fields in science and engineering. It will give academic researchers and practitioners a novel insight into the complex random signals characterized by fractional properties, and some powerful tools to analyze those signals.

Visual Communication - An Information Theory Approach (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Friedrich O. Huck, Carl L. Fales, Zia-ur Rahman Visual Communication - An Information Theory Approach (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Friedrich O. Huck, Carl L. Fales, Zia-ur Rahman
R4,475 Discovery Miles 44 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Visual Communication: An Information Theory Approach presents an entirely new look at the assessment and optimization of visual communication channels, such as are employed for telephotography and television. The electro-optical design of image gathering and display devices, and the digital processing for image coding and restoration, have remained independent disciplines which follow distinctly separate traditions; yet the performance of visual communication channels cannot be optimized just by cascading image-gathering devices, image-coding processors, and image-restoration algorithms as the three obligatory, but independent, elements of a modern system. Instead, to produce the best possible picture at the lowest data rate', it is necessary to jointly optimize image gathering, coding, and restoration. Although the mathematical development in Visual Communication: An Information Theory Approach is firmly rooted in familiar concepts of communication theory, it leads to formulations that are significantly different from those that are found in the traditional literature on either rate distortion theory or digital image processing. For example, the Wiener filter, which is perhaps the most common image restoration algorithm in the traditional digital image processing literature, fails to fully account for the constraints of image gathering and display. As demonstrated in the book, digitally restored images improve in sharpness and clarity when these constraints are properly accounted for. Visual Communication: An Information Theory Approach is unique in its extension of modern communication theory to the end-to-end assessment of visual communication. from scene to observer. As such, itties together the traditional textbook literature on electro-optical design and digital image processing. This book serves as an invaluable reference for image processing and electro-optical system design professionals and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.
