Ethics and Human Behaviour in ICT Development - International Case Studies with a Focus on Poland (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023):... Ethics and Human Behaviour in ICT Development - International Case Studies with a Focus on Poland (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Marion Hersh, Józef B. Lewoc
R3,659 Discovery Miles 36 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ethics and Human Behaviour in ICT Development discusses ethics in a professional context and encourages readers to self-assessment of their own behaviour. It provides thought-provoking accounts of the little-known early history of technological development in information and communication technology (ICT) and the automation industry in Poland, with a focus on Wroclaw. The book provides a framework for understanding the relationship between ethics and behaviour, and analyses critically ethical and behavioural issues in challenging workplaces and social contexts. It includes: case studies from around the world, especially Poland, which illustrate the relationships between human behaviour and ethics; biographies of successful Polish ICT and automation leading designers; analysis of case studies of human behaviour and ethics in challenging industrial development and other environments; and illustrative practical applications alongside the theory of human behaviour and ethics. The authors demonstrate the ingenuity of the early Polish designers, programmers and other specialists in overcoming the shortage of components caused by import embargoes to enable Poland to develop its own computer industry. An example of this is Elwro, formerly the largest manufacturer of computers in Poland. The discussion of its growth illustrates the potential of human creativity to overcome problems. The discussion of its fall highlights the importance of ethical approaches to technology transfer and the dangers of a colonialist mentality. The book is designed for engineers, computer scientists, researchers and professionals alike, as well as being of interest for those broadly concerned with ethics and human behaviour.

Telecommunications Cost Management (Paperback): Brian Dimarsico, Thomas Phelps IV, William A. Yarberry Jr. Telecommunications Cost Management (Paperback)
Brian Dimarsico, Thomas Phelps IV, William A. Yarberry Jr.
R3,091 Discovery Miles 30 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most telecom books focus on either traditional telecom billing audits or pure technology, with the cost saving ideas buried deep in the text. Busy decision-makers need the specifics quickly, without having to plow through details that do not affect the economics of a project. Telecommunications Cost Management takes cost saving techniques and brings them to the forefront where managers and decision makers can quickly use them for real world cost reductions or efficiency gains.

Traditional bill auditing texts provide recommendations but only within the context of the existing architecture - for example, they might highlight techniques for reducing circuit switched leased lines but omit the pros and cons of leased lines versus alternatives. Telecommunications Cost Management provides a blueprint for cost reduction across all major technologies - from frame relay to IP telephony to contract recommendations. The text presents the key facts up front, with sample calculations for broadband, local access, equipment, and service alternatives. It provides scenarios showing the effects of different architectural strategies for both voice and data communications. Intended for the busy decision-maker, this reference eliminates the need to wade through unnecessary details and guides the reader directly to the cost saving techniques.

Detecting Peripheral-based Attacks on the Host Memory (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Patrick Stewin Detecting Peripheral-based Attacks on the Host Memory (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Patrick Stewin
R2,636 Discovery Miles 26 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work addresses stealthy peripheral-based attacks on host computers and presents a new approach to detecting them. Peripherals can be regarded as separate systems that have a dedicated processor and dedicated runtime memory to handle their tasks. The book addresses the problem that peripherals generally communicate with the host via the host's main memory, storing cryptographic keys, passwords, opened files and other sensitive data in the process - an aspect attackers are quick to exploit. Here, stealthy malicious software based on isolated micro-controllers is implemented to conduct an attack analysis, the results of which provide the basis for developing a novel runtime detector. The detector reveals stealthy peripheral-based attacks on the host's main memory by exploiting certain hardware properties, while a permanent and resource-efficient measurement strategy ensures that the detector is also capable of detecting transient attacks, which can otherwise succeed when the applied strategy only measures intermittently. Attackers exploit this strategy by attacking the system in between two measurements and erasing all traces of the attack before the system is measured again.

The Telegraph in America, 1832-1920 (Hardcover): David Hochfelder The Telegraph in America, 1832-1920 (Hardcover)
David Hochfelder
R1,627 Discovery Miles 16 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Telegraphy in the nineteenth century approximated the internet in our own day. Historian and electrical engineer David Hochfelder offers readers a comprehensive history of this groundbreaking technology, which employs breaks in an electrical current to send code along miles of wire. "The Telegraph in America, 1832-1920," examines the correlation between technological innovation and social change and shows how this transformative relationship helps us to understand and perhaps define modernity.

The telegraph revolutionized the spread of information--speeding personal messages, news of public events, and details of stock fluctuations. During the Civil War, telegraphed intelligence and high-level directives gave the Union war effort a critical advantage. Afterward, the telegraph helped build and break fortunes and, along with the railroad, altered the way Americans thought about time and space. Hochfelder thus supplies us with an introduction to the early stirrings of the information age.
