Cumulative Impact and Other Disruption Claims in Construction (Hardcover): Richard J. Long, Rod C. Carter, Harold E. Buddemeyer Cumulative Impact and Other Disruption Claims in Construction (Hardcover)
Richard J. Long, Rod C. Carter, Harold E. Buddemeyer
R2,285 Discovery Miles 22 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cumulative impacts on construction projects remain largely an ill-defined concept. A more thorough understanding of cumulative impacts as defined by the construction industry and courts and boards will aid the contractor in preparing its damages and proving causation. The information herein provides a blueprint for the contractor seeking to recover costs that result from disruption and the cumulative impact of changes. Conversely, information is also provided that can be used by the owner to identify weaknesses in the contractor's claim submittal to better defend against a cumulative impact claim.

Intelligent Building Systems (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Albert Ting-Pat So, Wai Lok Chan Intelligent Building Systems (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Albert Ting-Pat So, Wai Lok Chan
R5,685 Discovery Miles 56 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intelligent building is the future of our building industry; all commercial, residential, industrial and institutional buildings will be designed towards the goal of intelligent buildings'. The most important aspect of an intelligent building is the building systems, such as electrical services, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, vertical transportation systems, and life safety systems, which must operate intelligently and efficiently to enhance the activities of the occupants. Intelligent Building Systems explains what already exists in a modern intelligent building and describes what is currently being developed by researchers to improve human comfort, working efficiency and energy performance for buildings in the 21st century. Intelligent Building Systems is divided into three parts. The first part gives a quick review of the structure, terminology, layout and operating principles of most standard modern building systems. The second part introduces the background material necessary to understand intelligent building systems, including information on electronics technology, fundamental mathematics, and techniques in artificial intelligence and signal processing. These first two parts are the foundation for the final part, which consists of research works carried out by the authors and other researchers in the application of artificial intelligence to building systems. The technologies presented will encourage readers to envision new and innovative ideas on possible future applications. Intelligent Building Systems is relevant to practitioners and researchers in the area of architectural science and engineering, electrical and mechanical services and intelligent buildings. It may also be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

The Future of Thermal Comfort in an Energy- Constrained World (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Tim Law The Future of Thermal Comfort in an Energy- Constrained World (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Tim Law
R5,680 R5,046 Discovery Miles 50 460 Save R634 (11%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The dissertation investigates the scientific and business factors that have resulted in air-conditioning being a major contributor to climate-change. With his architectural background, the author demonstrates how a design methodology, not commonly adopted in scientific studies, may actually be a suitable way of dealing with a complex problem: the 'business as usual' scenario involving building science, sociological values and consumer behavior. Using his innovations as case studies, the author shows how good ideas cannot be evaluated on scientific merit alone and demonstrates why commercialization may have a pivotal role in deployment of research-based technology. He advances the theory of personalized thermal comfort which can potentially resolve the air-conditioning conundrum.

Geotechnics in Pavement and Railway Design and Construction (Hardcover, New ed.): A.Gomes Correia, A. Loizos Geotechnics in Pavement and Railway Design and Construction (Hardcover, New ed.)
A.Gomes Correia, A. Loizos
R4,010 Discovery Miles 40 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Design and construction of pavements and railways for high speed trains is moving from merely empirical procedures towards a more mechanistic approach based on a better constructed theoretical basis. This will facilitate the use of new materials in transportation infrastructure under various climatic and traffic (load and speed) conditions. In addition, this will lead to a future challenge to implement a common framework between road, railway and geotechnical engineers. These contributions represent an excellent source of recent developments related to the design and construction of pavements, rail tracks and earth structures with emphasis placed on geotechnical background.

Methods of Measuring Moisture in Building Materials and Structures - State-of-the-Art Report of the RILEM Technical Committee... Methods of Measuring Moisture in Building Materials and Structures - State-of-the-Art Report of the RILEM Technical Committee 248-MMB (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Lars-Olof Nilsson
R4,382 Discovery Miles 43 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

RILEM TC 248-MMB was established in 2012 with the main aim to improve and distribute knowledge related to moisture measurement in construction materials in various scientific and industrial applications. Properties and performance of building materials and structures are influenced to a large extent by the moisture conditions in the materials. Obvious examples are heat conductivity, shrinkage and creep, transport properties, most types of deterioration, discoloration etc. For research and applications the moisture conditions must be quantified, by measurements in the laboratory or under field conditions. There is much variation in methods being used, even within the same topic, in different countries, both with regard to materials and to applications. No consensus whatsoever does exist. For the construction industry it is important to be able to quantify the moisture conditions in an accurate way in various applications. This state-of-the-art report is divided into two parts, Principles and Applications, with altogether 28 chapters on various moisture measuring principles and a number of applications.

Rigidly Framed Earth Retaining Structures - Thermal soil structure interaction of buildings supporting unbalanced lateral earth... Rigidly Framed Earth Retaining Structures - Thermal soil structure interaction of buildings supporting unbalanced lateral earth pressures (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Walid Aboumoussa, Magued Iskander
R5,380 Discovery Miles 53 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Structures placed on hillsides often present a number of challenges and a limited number of economical choices for site design. An option sometimes employed is to use the building frame as a retaining element, comprising a Rigidly Framed Earth Retaining Structure (RFERS). The relationship between temperature and earth pressure acting on RFERS, is explored in this monograph through a 4.5 year monitoring program of a heavily instrumented in service structure. The data indicated that the coefficient of earth pressure behind the monitored RFERS had a strong linear correlation with temperature. The study also revealed that thermal cycles, rather than lateral earth pressure, were the cause of failure in many structural elements.

The book demonstrates that depending on the relative stiffness of the retained soil mass and that of the structural frame, the developed lateral earth pressure, during thermal expansion, can reach magnitudes several times larger than those determined using classical earth pressure theories. Additionally, a nearly perpetual lateral displacement away from the retained soil mass may occur at the free end of the RFERS leading to unacceptable serviceability problems. These results suggest that reinforced concrete structures designed for the flexural stresses imposed by the backfill soil will be inadequately reinforced to resist stresses produced during the expansion cycles.

Parametric studies of single and multi-story RFERS with varying geometries and properties are also presented to investigate the effects of structural stiffness on the displacement of RFERS and the lateral earth pressure developed in the soil mass. These studies can aid the reader in selecting appropriate values of lateral earth pressure for the design of RFERS. Finally, simplified closed form equations that can be used to predict the lateral drift of RFERS are presented.

KEY WORDS: Earth Pressure; Soil-Structure Interaction; Mechanics; Failure; Distress; Temperature; Thermal Effects; Concrete; Coefficient of Thermal Expansion; Segmental Bridges; Jointless Bridges; Integral Bridges; Geotechnical Instrumentation; Finite Element Modeling; FEM; Numerical Modeling."
