The Diary of a Mad Chef - A Collection of Culinary Treasures and Short Stories (Hardcover): Daniel DellaVecchia The Diary of a Mad Chef - A Collection of Culinary Treasures and Short Stories (Hardcover)
Daniel DellaVecchia
R871 Discovery Miles 8 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This family cookbook morphed into much more for me during the writing process. It began by contacting friends and family to collect recipes for what I thought would be a simple process. During those conversations and with my own memories, a flood of personal history evolved in my mind. What began as a repository of food recipes became much more to me, and I decided to collect the process in the form of this book, The Diary of a Mad Chef, to also include photos of those people and selected short stories. Food has always been the center of our family's common narrative thread, and I attempted to place the face and the stories of my friends and family with the recipes as I remember them. Along with the feedback and photos from my friends and family, it became a two-year-long effort to compile, edit, and publish this book. The journey has been a magnificent experience for me, and I am grateful to have had the time and opportunity to write this book.

A Really Big Lunch - The Roving Gourmand on Food and Life (Hardcover): Jim Harrison A Really Big Lunch - The Roving Gourmand on Food and Life (Hardcover)

"[A] culinary combo plate of Hunter S. Thompson, Ernest Hemingway, Julian Schnabel, and Sam Peckinpah . . . Harrison writes with enough force to make your knees buckle and with infectious zeal that makes you turn the pages hungry for more . . . Jim Harrison has staked out a distinctive place in the world of food writing."--Jane and Michael Stern, New York Times Book Review on The Raw and the Cooked New York Times bestselling author Jim Harrison was one of this country's most beloved writers, a muscular, brilliantly economic stylist with a salty wisdom. He also wrote some of the best essays on food around, earning praise as "the poet laureate of appetite" (Dallas Morning News). A Really Big Lunch, to be published on the one-year anniversary of Harrison's death, collects many of his food pieces for the first time--and taps into his larger-than-life appetite with wit and verve. Jim Harrison's legendary gourmandise is on full display in A Really Big Lunch. From the titular New Yorker piece about a French lunch that went to thirty-seven courses, to pieces from Brick, Playboy, Kermit Lynch Newsletter, and more on the relationship between hunter and prey, or the obscure language of wine reviews, A Really Big Lunch is shot through with Harrison's pointed apercus and keen delight in the pleasures of the senses. And between the lines the pieces give glimpses of Harrison's life over the last three decades. A Really Big Lunch is a literary delight that will satisfy every appetite. "Harrison is the American Rabelais, and he is at his irreverent and excessive best in this collection." --John Skowles, San Diego Union-Tribune on The Raw and the Cooked

Following the success of Real Food and Appetite, this is the tenth book from Nigel Slater, the award-winning food writer and author of the bestselling autobiography, Toast. The food in The Kitchen Diaries is simply what I eat at home. The stuff I make for myself, for friends and family, for visitors and for parties, for Sunday lunch and for snacks. These are meals I make when I stop work, or when I am having mates over or when I want to surprise, seduce or show off. This is what I cook when I'm feeling energetic, lazy, hungry or late. It is what I eat when I'm not phoning out for pizza or going for a curry. This is the food that makes up my life, both the Monday to Friday stuff and that for weekends and special occasions. Much of it is what you might call fast food, because I still believe that life is too short to spend all day at the stove, but some of it is unapologetically long, slow cooking. But without exception every single recipe in this book is a doddle to cook. A walk in the park. A piece of p . Fast food, slow food, big eats, little eats, quick pasta suppers, family roasts and even Christmas lunch. It is simply my stuff, what I cook and eat, every day.

We live in a world of major disruption, where the individual and the collective stand in opposition against the backdrop of globalization, digital revolution, community development, growing concerns around health and the planet, and now an unprecedented global health crisis. This book explores how these phenomena influence the social ties that surround food and the way we eat together. Extensive research is presented on institutional recommendations concerning eating together, the role of online communities in supporting weight loss, the perceived consequences of diets, the social phenomena involved in vegetarianism, market segmentation in the case of ritual and religious practices, and the rising tendency to "buy local" and to value local identity. As the Covid-19 crisis adds to the complexity of these issues, its impact is also taken into account. For both interested readers and the many players involved in the agri-food industry, these reflections shed light on the current developments in "eating together".

Here, at last, is a cookbook that has nothing to do with celebrity chefdom and everything to do with real life. Cancel the dinner reservations and pick up this book-and rediscover the pleasure of cooking at home.
