As the country moves toward marriage equality for gays and
lesbians, couples and pastors are in need of updated language for
marriage services. This sourcebook not only provides inclusive
marriage services, taking into account a variety of situations, but
also provides guidance for couples and pastors to take into account
for all couples. In addition, it includes prayers for a number of
situations that happen around many weddings, such as rehearsal
dinners, the wedding participants before worship, and the
reception. Inclusive Marriage Services includes updated but
traditional language carefully chosen, resembling historical
marriages we are all familiar with, but improving some of the
language.
"For the greatest, most profound, tenderest things in the world, we
must wait." Never are moments of quiet reflection more important
than during the rush of the Christmas season. These beautiful
meditations from the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the most
beloved theologians of the twentieth century, are perfect as brief
devotions for those who already love Bonhoeffer's work and as
wonderful introductions to his writing for young readers and others
not yet familiar with him. Combined with beautifully evocative,
full-color photographs, these passages remind us of the profound
wonders we celebrate during Advent and Christmas and of the
reverence appropriate to the season. Includes a short biography of
Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Perfect for gift giving.
This is a comprehensive introduction to Scotland's major pilgrim
routes, past and present. It covers every region and offers
inclusive, simple devotional directions related to each journey.
The Pilgrim Guide to Scotland is both evocative and inspirational,
following each pilgrim journey as a story and as an experience.
This is accompanied by simple route and geographical information
for walking and travelling in a variety of ways. For those who
prefer to explore from the convenience of their armchairs, there is
a plethora of enthralling story and information. The concept of
pilgrimage is undergoing major revival as a contemporary form of
spirituality and faith in Scotland where, for many centuries, it
was actively suppressed. Scotland has an exceptionally rich Celtic,
medieval and modern spread of sacred places. The pilgrim theme
opens up the history, environment and faith of Scotland in a unique
way. A fascinating and unique way of exploring Scotland's spiritual
and cultural heritage.
Rudolf Steiner, the often undervalued, multifaceted genius of
modern times, contributed much to the regeneration of culture. In
addition to his philosophical teachings, he provided ideas for the
development of many practical activities, including education -
both general and special - agriculture, medicine, economics,
architecture, science, religion and the arts. Steiner's original
contribution to human knowledge was based on his ability to conduct
'spiritual research', the investigation of metaphysical dimensions
of existence. With his scientific and philosophical training, he
brought a new systematic discipline to the field, allowing for
conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer from
childhood, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree,
enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries
of life. Samples of Steiner's work are to be found in this
introductory reader in which Matthew Barton brings together
excerpts from Steiner's many talks and writings on the festivals of
Whitsun and Ascension. The volume also features an editorial
introduction, afterword, commentary and notes.
'Celebrating' and 'Holy Communion' are not always used in the same
sentence about what can be a solemn and awe-inspiring ceremony. But
it is important to acknowledge that there is joy in believing.
Death has been overcome and there is a new creation. The Sacrament
of the Lord's Supper draws us, by the grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ, into a feasting where our sinful past must be laid aside
and the life of the reign of God fully anticipated. This book has
been written both for ministers and people in the congregations of
the Church of Scotland. Its aim is to unpack the riches contained
within the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper and offer material that
can help to energise and deepen consciousness of how the body of
Christ - which is the Church - is an engagement of all playing
their respective parts, to the glory of God. Celebrating Holy
Communion is a full commentary on one characteristic order for the
celebration of Holy Communion in the Church of Scotland. Each
section includes material to prompt and encourage discussion among
ministers and also among congregations. We may never aspire to
comprehend what is at the heart a mystery - the gift of God beyond
our understanding. But this book is offered as a practical tool for
the Church's mission in which there is a treasured place for the
Sacrament. Through its focus on the Lord's Supper, it enables all
to engage with the nature, health and renewal of our local Church
communities.
Sacraments speak a language and disclose their power through
symbols. Beyond 'representing' another reality, sacramental symbols
are intimately connected with the reality they express and sources
of joy, solace, confrontation, peace, healing, strength, and
life-giving sustenance to the initiated. In its "Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy, " the Council the Second Vatican Council
(1962-1965) urged that sacramental symbols be more transparent to
their sacred reality to disclose the reality of the Christ event
--the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ--so that
mystery, and not confusion, could flourish. The seven sacraments -
Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Marriage, Orders and the
Anointing of the Sick - reveal a link to social justice. The
contributors to this book are theologians with pastoral
sensitivities--including marrieds, parents, pastors and priests.
This present work the social implications of worship, the history
of each sacrament, and but also an integrated understanding of the
transformation that is inextricably linked to each sacrament, as
well as the active presence of Christ who lives in expectation of
our response to participate in the urgent response to unjust
policies and systems that affect the most vulnerable in our global
family.
With the sensitivity born of time and experience, Charles Hoffacker
presents an unusually warm and caring approach to preaching at a
pivotal transition in human life, one which goes to the very heart
of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Hoffacker teaches the reader,
whether a seasoned preacher or a novice homilist, to find the key
to unlocking the mystery of Jesus promise of eternal life in a
mortal life now ended.
The Reformation restored the Scriptures to the people, but the job
was only halfway finished. Today the church is awakening to the
truth that ministry is not just the domain of clergy, but belongs
to the entire body of Christ. God is moving her to complete her
unfinished business of placing the ministry back in the hands of
the people. Unfinished Business has played a pivotal part in
helping the church reclaim ministry at the grassroots level. First
published in 1990 as The New Reformation, it has become a classic
resource for church life. Expanding on and updating the original
material with fresh examples and references to eight key important
movements, this new edition lays foundations for the church to move
from: . Passive to active . Maintenance to mission . Clergy to
people of God . Teacher/caregiver to equipping enabler Pointing us
back to the church as an organism, not an institution, author Greg
Ogden shows how each of us is called to help finish the Reformation
s unfinished business: expressing the priesthood of every believer
practically in the church, the world, and all avenues of life."
Our culture has undergone a major shift: younger generations have
less and less interest in the printed word as they become
predominantly image oriented. In response, as congregations
increasingly learn to be more sophisticated in using newer
electronic technologies, they are finding themselves at different
places in the quest to understand, acquire, manage, and benefit
from the technology boom. Worship leaders in congregations already
using some electronic media are realizing that they could be doing
more with it, and are seeking new ideas. Congregational leaders
scrambling to catch up with a worship committee that has decided
it's time for a change aren't sure of the next steps. Or maybe
there's been a gift to the congregation to be spent on electronics,
and no one is quite sure how best to use the money. Michael
Bausch's book grows out of several years' of conversation, personal
experimentation, and experience with multimedia worship in one
modest-sized, small-town church, while also drawing on the
experiences and work of other churches learning to use electronic
media in worship. Bausch balances concern for practical issues,
such as finances and architecture, with attention to theological
integrity and the challenges of sustaining media-enhanced worship.
He skillfully shows how the artistic resources of the world around
us can enhance our awareness of God's presence in worship.

What is at stake is authenticity. . . . Sooner or later Christians
tire of public meetings that are profoundly inauthentic, regardless
of how well (or poorly) arranged, directed, performed. We long to
meet, corporately, with the living and majestic God and to offer
him the praise that is his due. ---D. A. Carson Worship is a hot
topic, but the ways that Christians from different traditions view
it vary greatly. What is worship? More important, what does it look
like in action, both in our corporate gatherings and in our daily
lives? These concerns---the blending of principle and
practice---are what Worship by the Book addresses. Cutting through
cultural cliches, D. A. Carson, Mark Ashton, Kent Hughes, and
Timothy Keller explore, respectively: .Worship Under the Word
.Following in Cranmer s Footsteps .Free Church Worship: The
Challenge of Freedom .Reformed Worship in the Global City This is
not a comprehensive theology of worship, writes Carson. Still less
is it a sociological analysis of current trends or a minister s
manual chockfull of how to instructions. Rather, this book offers
pastors, other congregational leaders, and seminary students a
thought-provoking biblical theology of worship, followed by a look
at how three very different traditions of churchmanship might move
from this theological base to a better understanding of corporate
worship. Running the gamut from biblical theology to historical
assessment all the way to sample service sheets, Worship by the
Book shows how local churches in diverse traditions can foster
corporate worship that is God-honoring, Word-revering, heartfelt,
and historically and culturally informed."

RETURN OF THE THREE KINGS: RECLAIMING THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
addresses the all-too-common reality of Christmas today:
over-commercialization, rush, stress and let-down. Many have shared
the typical experience of the Christmas morning melee of presents
followed by too much eggnog and turkey and the post-Christmas
depressed stupor, knowing that we have to wait another year for the
full Christmas Spirit to arrive again. Finding something missing in
the usual Christmas celebrations, Jo Lee Loveland Link and John W.
Link looked to older traditions and less harried times for
inspiration. The Links were delighted to rediscover Olde Christmas,
the 12 Days that actually occur after Christmas Day, December 25
through January 6 - Epiphany, the Festival of the Three Kings. IN
THIS BOOK the Links explore the complex historical, religious, and
cultural traditions that were created and evolved out of the 12
Days of Christmas (without partridges, gold rings or milking
maids). To this older tradition, the Links grafted new ideas to
celebrate a renewed 12 Days of Christmas. The Links emphasize the
universality of Festivals of Light across the World, across
religions, and across centuries. Based on midwinter Solstice
Festivals and sacred stories and teachings, Christmastime provides
the ideal platform to reach out to embrace festivals and ceremonies
with meaning for each family. The Links have included daily
readings that reflect this diversity and have included three
sections of readings: (1) readings and prayers from a wide range of
traditional Christian Sources; (2) readings from World Religions
and ecumenical sources including Judaism, Buddhism and Sufism; and
(3) readings which are agnostic or secular, but focused on
Christmas themes. The Links sought to make sure that the 12 Days
would be inclusive for all families with often different points of
view and members in different faith journeys at different times in
their lives. The book includes detailed how-to information, and
strategies for celebration of the 12 Days for individuals, couples,
families, and those with loved ones stationed elsewhere. The
Celebration unites giving a simple gift, sharing a short reading,
and heartfelt conversation about the real meaning of each day for
givers and receivers. There is even a section on dealing with grief
and sorrow during the holidays. The book has additional resources
of holiday activities, stories, books, movies, most of which are
available for free. RETURN OF THE THREE KINGS provides a fresh way
to meet the challenges that we face as we navigate the emotional
minefield of the holidays. This old tradition made new again
becomes a guide to having more fun and yet getting a deeper sense
of meaning and connection for ourselves, our families, and our
communities. The Links began researching and experimenting with
their 12 Days of Christmas Celebration over ten years ago.
Professionally they are consultants, trainers and researchers in

For use during Lent, Holy Week and Easter, this is a truly
exceptional resource. The inspiring and diverse range of material
provides a thrilling mix of Scots and English texts. David Ogston's
honest, refreshing and sensitive words enrich and enlarge the mind.
This wonderful resource from one of Scotland's most talented
liturgists is for all who seek inspiration or lead worship. It
includes reflections, meditations, prayers, litanies, psalms and
other imaginative worship.
Looking for material for a midweek Lenten series that is engaging
for congregation members but easy for worship leaders to produce?
Here is a collection of Lenten dialogue sermons on the gospel of
Matthew that is conversational in tone, engaging and accessible for
people in the pew, easy to stage, theologically thoughtful,
biblically insightful, focused on themes and messages found in the
gospel of Matthew, and tested in the parish.
Roger Timm invites his readers into the Lenten season of study and
reflection with this poignant collection of dialogues. "Acting Out
Matthew's Message" presents a relevant discussion on the themes
found throughout the first gospel narrative, inviting the reader to
reflect upon the truths hidden within Matthew's parables while
recognizing the careful balance between Old Testament law and the
new message of Jesus. Timm's simple approach throughout his fifteen
dialogues has been designed to awaken the minds and hearts of an
audience, presenting simple scenarios with theological significance
and offering a fresh perspective on the message of the cross.
The Rev. Dr. Roger E. Timm retired November 30, 2011, after serving
eleven years as pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church (ELCA) in
Riverside, Illinois. From January 1993 to November 2000 he was
pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, Naperville, Illinois. Timm
served as College Pastor and Associate Professor of Religion at
Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin, from 1989 to 1992, and as
Assistant Chaplain and Assistant Professor of Religion at
Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania, from 1980 to 1988. He
was pastor of University Lutheran Chapel, Los Angeles, offering
Lutheran campus ministry for UCLA, from 1975 to 1980, and assistant
professor of philosophy at Concordia College, Bronxville, New York,
in 1973 and 1974. Timm's first pastorate was as pastor of St.
John-Concordia Lutheran Church in the south Bronx, New York, from
1970-1973. He received his M.Div. degree from Concordia Seminary
and an M.A. in philosophy from Washington University, both in St.
Louis, Missouri, in 1970. Timm received a Ph.D. in religious
studies from Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University,
New York, in 1975. Married in 1967, Pastor Timm and his wife
Marilyn have two adult daughters and two grandchildren.
Stephen Cherry's latest book is a sequence of beautifully crafted
prayer-meditations, providing simple yet profound spiritual
nourishment for the Lenten season. The book gives an engaging
introduction to the different ways that prayer can work in the
lives of the busiest of Christians. Barefoot Prayers is ideal for
people who may have little time for sitting and reading but more
time for thinking and reflecting.

If you love the work of John Maxwell, Max Lucado, Joyce Meyer and
Chuck Swindoll, then you will love this new book. If you remember
how you felt when Linus told Charlie Brown the meaning of Christmas
then this book is for you. You know the story...but do you really?
What happened after Mary said "Yes"? How long did it take Mary and
Joseph to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem? Imagine how devastated
Joseph must have felt when he was unable to find a room at the inn
for the Son of God to be born? How would you have felt? Be
captivated as you travel back in time. Be inspired by the
extraordinary faith of the ordinary people whom God chose to bring
His most precious gift to mankind. These were real people with real
lives, with real emotions. They were no different than you and me.
