Desert Springs in the City (Paperback): Leopold Glueckert Desert Springs in the City (Paperback)
Leopold Glueckert; Edited by William Joseph Glueckert
R642 Discovery Miles 6 420 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The history of the Carmelite Order of the Catholic Church, founded in the 13th century, and now located on five continents. The author, a long time history teacher, uses the storytelling style of writing to bring the reader from the Order's humble beginnings on Mount Carmel in Palestine during the Crusades to today. Originally hermits, the members became part of the mendicant movement, spreading rapidly throughout Europe, preaching the Word of God, teaching in the major European universities, and, most of all, working with the ordinary people of the day. The centuries brought many challenges and new opportunities to the members of the Order in their search to serve God, the Church, and others seeking a deeper relationship with God. Today there are approximately 40,000 men and women around the world affiliated to the Order.

Lowell Tarling; Lowell Tarling
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Lowell Tarling wrote 'Edges' for that most wonderful of all author incentives - insatiable curiosity. Combined with a quest for enlightenment, he undertook a subject few would have chosen-the history of those people and groups that separated from the Seventh-day Adventist church. Of necessity, this also includes touching on the history of the mainstream Seventh-day Adventist church. Lowell's education and early adult experiences were deeply entwined with the Seventh-day Adventist church. However, it would be a mistake to assume that his writing on the subject suffers from any degree of bias. There is a sense that he took on the role of bystander, and this essentially gave him a valuable degree of separation and objectivity. Methodical in his approach and relentless with regard to research, Lowell delivers a surprising, connective, inside view of a divisive period in the growth and emergence of the separatist groups that were spawned within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Sparing nothing, he pares back the layers of doctrine, dogma and the heated nature of the schisms in the church. He deftly reveals the angst, divergence and egotism; but also humanity, desire for truth and humility. For all of these were present in the interchanges that shaped not only those movements that separated, but also the Seventh-day Adventist church. The first edition of 'Edges' was published in 1981. Reprinted now to a generation who did not share the past struggles is indeed worthwhile. It is because of the conflict and debate of those times that they now sit in the pews of churches of their choice, where 'saved by grace alone' is integral and unchallenged. Essentially, emergence from dissension is a human experience. It occurs with every doctrine, creed or organisation. There is a wider view - this is not only the history and narrative of one church's crises. It touches wherever we are in life. Ultimately, it is impossible to ignore the authenticity of Lowell's search. We sense that it means more than a disengaged treatise on a topic of interest. In the end it matters less whether he found viable answers to a religious dilemma. It is significant that he had the courage to ask questions. Above all, it is notable that at the close of the book he chose the words spoken by Christ, 'Whosoever will, may come'.

1880. This work was written from memory by some sisters who were present at this conference, and revised by a priest of the Congregation of the Mission. Mr. Vincent commenced stating the subject of this conference consisted of two points. The first point being how important it is to profit by the instructions given us in the Conferences, by the admonitions of our superiors, or by advice of any kind. The second point was the means to profit by theses instructions and to put them in practice.

Kennon L. Callahan
R628 R572 Discovery Miles 5 720 Save R56 (9%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Create a small, strong congregation that is dedicated to advancing God's mission The twenty-first century is the century of small, strong congregations. More people will be drawn to small, strong congregations than any other kind of congregation. Yes, there are mega-congregations; Their number is increasing greatly. Nevertheless, across the planet, the vast majority of congregations will be small and strong, and the vast majority of people will be in these congregations. With uncommon wisdom Kennon L. Callahan--today's most noted church consultant--moves ahead of conventional thinking and in Small, Strong Congregations offers his unique vision of the church of the future. This important book chronicles the emergence of a vast number of congregations that are questioning the bigger-is-better notion in church membership. These congregations are deliberately small, active, and happy in their dedication to creating strong church communities that advance God's mission. Step by step, Kennon Callahan shows pastors and other church leaders how they can develop the values and specific qualities helpful to shape and strengthen their own small congregations.Written to be a hands-on guide, Small, Strong Congregations offers practical suggestions for creating mission and service, compassion and shepherding, community and belonging, self-reliance and self-sufficiency, worship and hope, teams and leaders, space and facilities, and giving and generosity. This wise resource is filled with illustrative examples that show clearly how myriad small churches have created solid, vigorous congregations.

Getting the Marriage Conversation Right - A Guide for Effective Dialogue (Paperback): William B May Getting the Marriage Conversation Right - A Guide for Effective Dialogue (Paperback)
William B May
R236 Discovery Miles 2 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Getting the Marriage Conversation Right: A Guide for Effective Dialogue teaches you how to promote and defend traditional marriage in non-religious terms. It's a great "how to" guide to answer those tough questions you've struggled with. Author William B. May shows you how to navigate the pitfalls and avoid making this a gay vs. Christian issue. May brings into the legal definition of marriage the rights of children, and provides sensible guidelines on how to avoid common traps that hinder communications for advocating public policy about marriage. Getting the Marriage Conversation Right includes a substantial section of FAQs at the heart of the conflict. Marriage is the only institution that unites children with their parents, and that has been recognized by every culture, society, and religion, each according to their own competencies. Getting the Marriage Conversation Right shows how to get that interest recognized in laws, societal institutions, and individuals, and begin to rebuild a marriage culture.

Claiming Society for God - Religious Movements and Social Welfare (Paperback): Nancy J Davis, Robert V Robinson Claiming Society for God - Religious Movements and Social Welfare (Paperback)
Nancy J Davis, Robert V Robinson
R653 Discovery Miles 6 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Claiming Society for God focuses on common strategies employed by religiously orthodox, fundamentalist movements around the world. Rather than employing terrorism, as much of post-9/11 thinking suggests, these movements use a patient, under-the-radar strategy of infiltrating and subtly transforming civil society. Nancy J. Davis and Robert V. Robinson tell the story of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Shas in Israel, Comunione e Liberazione in Italy, and the Salvation Army in the United States. They show how these movements build massive grassroots networks of religiously based social service agencies, hospitals, schools, and businesses to bring their own brand of faith to popular and political fronts.

R461 Discovery Miles 4 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Canto Libri" Canto (Latin) means "to sing" and libri means "book" - canto libri translates as "songbook" or "hymnal." A hymn is a song... religious, written with praise, adoration or prayer in heart and mind. Collection of hymns is known as hymnals. Each life is a songbook; my life, too. This is my songbook; One Chapter of my journey so far. I am sure there are many more Chapters to come; many more Chapters to share and share I will ...With total openness. Each song a sacred hymn; each breath a precious pearl; some one somewhere has been kind on my world. My life is a songbook... sung in full by some...few... but mostly in part by many...My songbook will remain...for always...Canto Libri is one song...one chapter of my life...Come share My Canto Libri, My Hymnal... I dedicate the thoughts within this book to the children who receive kind treatment at the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (London, UK) with love I pledge to donate half of the income proceeds of this book to their noble cause. The Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity deals with 192,000 patient visits every year and they are extraordinary in the way they "put the child first always." I feel blessed that I can do this and I feel even more blessed knowing that you have been kind companions on that journey with me.

The Very Pure Word of God - The Book of Common Prayer as a Model of Biblical Liturgy (Paperback): Peter Adam The Very Pure Word of God - The Book of Common Prayer as a Model of Biblical Liturgy (Paperback)
Peter Adam; Edited by Mark Burkill, Gerald L. Bray
R271 Discovery Miles 2 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The recent celebration of the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer has helped to stimulate a renewed interest in its teaching and fundamental contribution to Anglican identity. Archbishop Cranmer and others involved in the English Reformation knew well that the content and shape of the services set out in the Prayer Book were vital ways of teaching congregations biblical truth and the principles of the Christian gospel. Thus the aim of this series of booklets which focus on the Formularies of the Church of England and the elements of the different services within the Prayer Book is to highlight what those services teach about the Christian faith and to demonstrate how they are also designed to shape the practice of that faith. As well as providing an account of the origins of the Prayer Book services, these booklets are designed to offer practical guidance on how such services may be used in Christian ministry nowadays. In this overview of the Book of Common Prayer, Peter Adam brings us back again and again to its emphasis on the 'very pure word of God', setting the gold standard and hallmark of all our liturgy. Peter Adam served as Vicar of St Jude's Carlton, and as Principal of Ridley College in Melbourne Australia. He is currently Vicar Emeritus of St Jude's, and Canon of St Paul's Cathedral Melbourne.

Faith Forming Faith (Paperback, New): Paul E. Hoffman Faith Forming Faith (Paperback, New)
Paul E. Hoffman; Foreword by Diana Butler Bass
R432 R397 Discovery Miles 3 970 Save R35 (8%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Description: Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle discovered that by forming the faith of new Christians and leading them to the waters of baptism, they as a parish were renewed and revitalized for mission in the world. Faith Forming Faith describes the year-long process of faith mentoring that has become the center of this congregation's ministry. Hoffman's easy narrative style weaves together solid pastoral and theological insights with the practical, real-life stories of lives transformed by a vibrant new faith--the lives of newcomers and long-time members alike. This is a great primer for anyone wanting more than a pastor's class, more than another curriculum. It is a book for pastors, parish leaders, or seminarians. But it's also a great witness to a skeptical, questioning world outside the Church as well, showing that a life of faith can be lived in a secular, questioning culture. Endorsements: ""This is the book for which many of us have been waiting. In our new, post-Christendom time the critical need for faith formation--catechesis--has now been understood and accepted. But how? How to do faith formation for adults, for seekers, for a new time? Paul Hoffman's inspiring report on 'The WAY' goes a long way toward answering not only the 'why' and 'what, ' but also the crucial 'how' question. Invaluable."" -Anthony B. Robinson President, Congregational Leadership Northwest ""Paul Hoffman joyously testifies to God's reviving breath stirring a congregation and bringing new Christians to baptism when a faith community embraces the Adult Catechumenate as the focus of its ministry. Those skeptical that an ancient way of forming Christians can work today will meet people whose lives were truly transformed as they walked with God, surrounded by God's people, on a journey of revelation, faith, and discovery that a congregation in Seattle simply calls 'The WAY.'"" Craig A. Satterlee Professor of Homiletics Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago ""Paul Hoffman has written a stunning book. The book describes one congregation's bold embodiment of the ancient catechumenate--a pattern of apprenticeship forming people into faith in Jesus Christ. It offers pastors, seminarians, and congregational leaders sage council for beginning this baptismal pattern of 'font-forming-faith' in their own communities, and in doing so sets out a gracious and vital proposal about the witness of faith in an increasingly secular society."" -Christian Scharen Codirector, Learning Pastoral Imagination Project About the Contributor(s): Paul E. Hoffman is Lead Pastor at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington. For the past fifteen years, along with other staff members and committed lay leaders, he has led The WAY at Phinney Ridge, a contemporary adaptation of the ancient ministry of the Adult Catechumenate.

A Wolf in the Pulpit? - The Setup for Moral Failure and the Abuse of Power (Paperback): Alexander Strauch, Richard H. Swartley A Wolf in the Pulpit? - The Setup for Moral Failure and the Abuse of Power (Paperback)
Alexander Strauch, Richard H. Swartley
R261 Discovery Miles 2 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The author addresses the epidemic of moral failure of solo and senior church pastors. Some of these scandals he has witnessed personally, and, as an elder, was charged with dealing with the painful aftermath. He delves beneath surface causes and past the usual admonitions to pastors to avoid temptation, and specifically challenges the structure of today's churches-a structure which precipitates overload on the man at the top, and sets him up for overwhelming temptations. Swartley's detailed New Testament analysis exposes the structure the apostles intended and established. He is a strong advocate of the path that the church can and should take-to turn the tide, and to protect our churches and Christ's reputation.

Iran and Christianity - Historical Identity and Present Relevance (Paperback, NIPPOD): Mark Bradley Iran and Christianity - Historical Identity and Present Relevance (Paperback, NIPPOD)
Mark Bradley
R1,468 Discovery Miles 14 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this enlightening study Mark Bradley looks at the growing underground church in Iran. Given the hostility of the regime, it is often assumed that Christianity is withering in Iran, but in fact more Iranian Muslims have become Christians in the last 25 years than since the seventh century, when Islam first came to Iran.

Beginning with an in-depth look at the historical identity of Iran, religiously, culturally and politically, Bradley shows how this identity makes Iranians inclined towards Christianity. He goes on to look at the impact of the 1979 revolution, an event which has brought war, economic chaos and totalitarianism to Iran, and its implications for Iranian faith. The study concludes with an analysis of church growth since 1979 and an examination of the emerging underground church.

This is a fascinating work, guaranteed to improve any reader's knowledge of not only Iranian faith and church growth, but of Iranian culture and history as a whole thanks to the thorough treatment given to the country's background.

Too often the word "church" evokes ho-hum yawns. Yet God's desire is that the church meet the deepest of human need and provide human beings with daily and eternal hope. How can the church be more CHRIST centered? How can it be a safe, secure HOME for spiritual seekers who may not be particularly "religious" but do wish to connect with God and other seekers? Why does the church not have a sense of URGENCY in getting the good news out to a world looking for real good news? How can RELATIONSHIPS with God and others be developed? How can we discover, know and claim our CALLING as the people of God? How can the church truly be the HOPE of the world?

Native American Freemasonry - Associationalism and Performance in America (Hardcover, New): Joy Porter Native American Freemasonry - Associationalism and Performance in America (Hardcover, New)
Joy Porter
R1,546 Discovery Miles 15 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Freemasonry has played a significant role in the history of Native Americans since the colonial era--a role whose extent and meaning are fully explored for the first time in this book. The work's overarching concern is with how Masonry met specific social and personal needs, a theme developed across three significant periods of membership: the revolutionary era, the last third of the nineteenth century, and the years following the First World War. Joy Porter places Freemasonry into historical context, revealing its social and political impact as a transatlantic phenomenon at the heart of the colonizing process. She then explores its meaning for many of the key Native leaders over time, for the ethnic groups who sought to make connections with it, and for the bulk of its American membership--the white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant middle class.
Porter contends that Freemasonry offered special access to Native Americans through its performance of ritual, an assertion borne out by a wealth of contemporary manuscripts, newspapers, pamphlets, Masonic sermons, orations, and lodge records and writings by Masonic historians and antiquarians gleaned from archives in New York, Philadelphia, Oklahoma, California, and London. Through these documents, she demonstrates that over time, Freemasonry became a significant avenue for the exchange, and perhaps even cocreation, of cultural forms by Indians and non-Indians.

Common Worship in Theological Education (Paperback): Siobhan Garrigan, Todd E. Johnson Common Worship in Theological Education (Paperback)
Siobhan Garrigan, Todd E. Johnson; Preface by Mary E. Hess
R721 Discovery Miles 7 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What is the place of corporate worship in theological education? Certainly it is not unexpected to have ministry students attending seminary chapel, but what are the expectations for the students who attend chapel? Is it to form their liturgical sensibilities into conformity with a particular worship tradition or style? Or is it to provide a safe place to try things that one would be reluctant to experiment with in congregational worship? Although common worship for ministry students is almost a given in all theological schools, there are few common understandings about it goals and purposes.Common Worship in Theological Education is the first book to address the theological, pedagogical, and political issues involved in the planning and execution of seminary chapel. It offers voices from across the theological and ecumenical spectrum about chapel, as well as involving multiple disciplines in the conversation. This volume provides the first comprehensive survey of the worship issues at stake in seminary education today. The essays in this collection provide the foundation for a productive conversation within a seminary faculty or among colleagues within a theological discipline. This volume makes the case that the chapel ought to have a seat at the table when the education mission of a theological school is being discussed. So pull up a chair and prepare for a fascinating conversation.

A comparison of Christianity with Muhammedanism or with any other religion must be preceded by a statement of the objects with which such comparison is undertaken, for the possibilities which lie in this direction are numerous. Hence the object of such comparisons is to trace the course of analogous developments and the interaction of influence and so to increase the knowledge of religion in general or of our own religion in particular.

Eleanor Kreider, Alan Kreider
R700 R629 Discovery Miles 6 290 Save R71 (10%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Today, as Christendom weakens, worship and mission are poised to reunite after centuries of separation. But this requires the church to rethink both "mission" and "worship." In post-Christendom mission, God is the main actor and God calls all Christians to participate. In post-Christendom worship, the church tells and celebrates the story of God, enabling members to live in hope and attract outsiders to its many tables of hospitality. In this passionate and thoughtful study, Alan Kreider and Eleanor Kreider draw upon missiology, liturgiology, biblical studies, church history, and the vast experience of today's global Christian church-to say nothing of their long tenure as teachers and writers in contemporary England and the United States. Academically responsible but also practical and accessible, Worship and Mission After Christendom is a much-needed guide for people who take seriously God's call to be the church in a world where institutional religion is no longer taken for granted. 324 Pages.
