Music Festivals and Regional Development in Australia (Hardcover, New edition): Chris Gibson, John Connell Music Festivals and Regional Development in Australia (Hardcover, New edition)
Chris Gibson, John Connell
R4,924 Discovery Miles 49 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Throughout the world, the number of festivals has grown exponentially in the last two decades, as people celebrate local and regional cultures, but perhaps more importantly as local councils and other groups seek to use festivals both to promote tourism and to stimulate rural development. However, most studies of festivals have tended to focus almost exclusively on the cultural and symbolic aspects, or on narrow modelling of economic multiplier impacts, rather than examining their long-term implications for rural change. This book therefore has an original focus. It is structured in two parts: the first discusses broad issues affecting music festivals globally, especially in the context of rural revitalisation. The second part looks in more detail at a range of types of festivals commonly found throughout North America, Europe and Australasia, such as country music, jazz, opera and alternative music festivals. The authors draw on in-depth research undertaken over the past five years in a range of Australian places, which traces the overall growth of festivals of various kinds, examines four of the more important and distinctive music festivals, and makes clear conclusions on their significance for rural and regional change.

Memory and Representation in Contemporary Europe - The Persistence of the Past (Hardcover, New edition): Siobhan Kattago Memory and Representation in Contemporary Europe - The Persistence of the Past (Hardcover, New edition)
Siobhan Kattago
R2,936 Discovery Miles 29 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why do certain places and not others symbolically capture the past and freeze time? Likewise, why does the process of memory, as a fluid and changing activity, seem to prevent its own solidification? Memory and Representation in Contemporary Europe reflects not only on the persistence of the past as a theme linked to modernity, media and time, but also discusses the politics of memory within a changing Europe. Drawing on the theoretical work of Hannah Arendt, Isaiah Berlin and Zygmunt Bauman, Siobhan Kattago uses examples from both Germany and Estonia in order to address the multiple layers of Europe's totalitarian past. Through reflecting on the legacy of totalitarianism and the revolutions of 1989, it becomes clear that the issue is less of whether one should remember, but rather how to internalize the various lessons of the past for the future of Europe. Memory and Representation in Contemporary Europe thus offers the reader occasions upon which to take stock of different but overlapping contours of past and present in contemporary Europe.

The Fictions that Shape Men's Lives (Hardcover): Christopher Kilmartin The Fictions that Shape Men's Lives (Hardcover)
Christopher Kilmartin
R4,205 Discovery Miles 42 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Fictions that Shape Men's Lives is structured around a number of key 'fictions' of masculinity, such as beliefs in biological determinism, the inevitability of men's violence and the opposition of the sexes, and proceeds to expose them to be wholly or partially unfounded. Examining the social pressure to behave and experience the self in ways that culture prescribes for the bodies we are perceived as having, this book provides an awareness of widely-held but distorted assumptions of gender. It also seeks to put men into the position to resist masculine social pressures when conforming to it conflicts with important life goals or values and/or causes harm. Making use of an informal, storytelling style provides an accessibility to those interested in breaking down their preconceptions of gender and masculinity, as well making links to key theories and concepts. This is a lively and engaging book for undergraduates studying introduction to Gender, Sexuality and Masculinity courses.

Public Relations Research Annual - Volume 3 (Paperback): Larissa A. Grunig, James E. Grunig Public Relations Research Annual - Volume 3 (Paperback)
Larissa A. Grunig, James E. Grunig
R1,074 Discovery Miles 10 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Published in book form, this is a scholarly periodical of academic research in public relations, containing refereed reviews and reports of original studies. It follows the current trend toward more solidly grounded, theoretical research in a field that has only begun to mature. The studies and reviews presented represent the most contemporary thought and investigation brought to bear on this subject. Many relevant topics are discussed, including communication roles, women's issues in the feminization of the field, the concepts of symmetry and game theory, and finally, publics -- dealing with roles, risk takers, and how audiences receive, process, and retain messages on public policy issues.

Geography Speaks: Performative Aspects of Geography - Performative Aspects of Geography (Hardcover, New Ed): Rob Sullivan Geography Speaks: Performative Aspects of Geography - Performative Aspects of Geography (Hardcover, New Ed)
Rob Sullivan
R4,635 Discovery Miles 46 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Geography Speaks is an investigation of how geography is informed by speech act theory and performativity. Starting with a critical analysis of how J.L. Austin's speech act theory probed the permeability between fact and fiction, it then assesses oppositional interpretations by John Searle and Jacques Derrida, and in doing so, it explores the fictional aspects within scientific knowledge. The book then focuses on five key aspects of the geographical discipline and analyses them using the theories of speech acts and performance: the performative aspects of the creation of place; speech act performances and geopolitics; acts of cartographical construction as variations of speech act performance; the performative aspects of the creation of public and private space, and, finally; the history of the discipline as a sequence of performative acts that attempt to establish geography as being constitutive of this or that type of disciplinary method or scientific viewpoint. Geography Speaks is an interdisciplinary text with a distinct and clear focus on cultural geography while also synthesizing into geography ideas germane to historiography, the philosophy of language, the history of science, and comparative literature.

The Rhetoric of Racist Humour - US, UK and Global Race Joking (Hardcover, New Ed): Simon Weaver The Rhetoric of Racist Humour - US, UK and Global Race Joking (Hardcover, New Ed)
Simon Weaver
R4,920 Discovery Miles 49 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In today's multicultural and multireligious societies, humour and comedy often become the focus of controversy over alleged racist or offensive content, as shown, for instance, by the intense debate of Sacha Baron Cohen's characters Ali G and Borat, and the Prophet Muhammad cartoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Despite these intense debates, commentary on humour in the academy lacks a clear way of connecting the serious and the humorous, and a clear way of accounting for the serious impact of comic language. The absence of a developed 'serious' vocabulary with which to judge the humorous tends to encourage polarized debates, which fail to account for the paradoxes of humour. This book draws on the social theory of Zygmunt Baumann to examine the linguistic structure of humour, arguing that, as a form of language similar to metaphor, it is both unstable and unpredictable, and structurally prone to act rhetorically; that is, to be convincing. Deconstructing the dominant form of racism aimed at black people in the US, and that aimed at Asians in the UK, The Rhetoric of Racist Humour shows how racist humour expresses and supports racial stereotypes in the US and UK, while also exploring the forms of resistance presented by the humour of Black and Asian comedians to such stereotypes. An engaging exploration of modern, late modern and fluid or postmodern forms of humour, this book will be of interest to sociologists and scholars of cultural and media studies, as well as those working in the fields of race and ethnicity, humour and cultural theory.

Value and the Media - Cultural Production and Consumption in Digital Markets (Hardcover, New Ed): Goeran Bolin Value and the Media - Cultural Production and Consumption in Digital Markets (Hardcover, New Ed)
Goeran Bolin
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Value is seldom discussed in its own right, though it is of utmost importance to our relations with media texts and cultural objects, as we constantly make judgements of various kinds with respect to them. This book focuses on how value - aesthetic, political and social and economic value - is produced in contemporary media and cultural production. Contending that value is not constituted by the essence of a thing, but is rather produced in social relations, through negotiations and justifications, Value and the Media discusses changes in the cultural industries over the past two decades, emphasising the rise of new, digital media, and the opportunities that these afford for the production and consumption of media texts and objects. Richly illustrated with examples from the UK, USA and Europe, this volume explores a range of media: both old mass media and new personal media, with a constant focus on the importance of both for our understanding of the changes that have occurred on the media landscape and their implications for the production of value. As such, this book will be of interest to social scientists and theorists working in the fields of cultural and media studies, popular culture, and consumption.

Fan Fiction and Copyright - Outsider Works and Intellectual Property Protection (Hardcover, New Ed): Aaron Schwabach Fan Fiction and Copyright - Outsider Works and Intellectual Property Protection (Hardcover, New Ed)
Aaron Schwabach
R4,632 Discovery Miles 46 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As long as there have been fans, there has been fan fiction. There seems to be a fundamental human need to tell additional stories about the characters after the book, series, play or movie is over. But developments in information technology and copyright law have put these fan stories at risk of collision with the content owners' intellectual property rights. Fan fiction has long been a nearly invisible form of outsider art, but over the past decade it has grown exponentially in volume and in legal importance. Because of its nature, authorship, and underground status, fan fiction stands at an intersection of key issues regarding property, sexuality, and gender. In Fan Fiction and Copyright, author Aaron Schwabach examines various types of fan-created content and asks whether and to what extent they are protected from liability for copyright infringement. Professor Schwabach discusses examples of original and fan works from a wide range of media, genres, and cultures. From Sherlock Holmes to Harry Potter, fictional characters, their authors, and their fans are sympathetically yet realistically assessed. Fan Fiction and Copyright looks closely at examples of three categories of disputes between authors and their fans: Disputes over the fans' use of copyrighted characters, disputes over online publication of fiction resembling copyright work, and in the case of J.K. Rowling and a fansite webmaster, a dispute over the compiling of a reference work detailing an author's fictional universe. Offering more thorough coverage of many such controversies than has ever been available elsewhere, and discussing fan works from the United States, Brazil, China, India, Russia, and elsewhere, Fan Fiction and Copyright advances the understanding of fan fiction as transformative use and points the way toward a safe harbor for fan fiction.

Bullying in the Arts - Vocation, Exploitation and Abuse of Power (Hardcover, New Ed): Anne-Marie Quigg Bullying in the Arts - Vocation, Exploitation and Abuse of Power (Hardcover, New Ed)
Anne-Marie Quigg
R4,503 Discovery Miles 45 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diva, Prima Donna, Maestro, Virtuoso: creative geniuses with the ability to deliver artistic excellence. However this perception can serve to tilt the balance of power in relationships and to substantiate the notion of artistic temperament; the Master is always right and the Diva must have her way. The artistic genius may be hell to work with but the end result (the art) is exceptional, so behaviour deemed unacceptable in normal circumstances must be tolerated. If the corporate culture in the arts is in thrall to the concept of the artistic genius, then across the various disciplines within the creative sector the prevailing mentality may be subscribing to a set of values that allows, even directly encourages, behaviour and employment conditions that are abusive. Bullying in the Arts argues that this mindset can have a profoundly negative effect in performing arts organisations, permitting managers and other staff to ignore bullying behaviour, as long as the show goes on. Researchers in a range of disciplines and fields have studied workplace bullying and, having witnessed bullying in a number of different arts organisations, Anne-Marie Quigg researched whether the behaviour represented isolated, rare occurrences in specific creative environments or if it was indicative of a more widespread problem in the arts and cultural sector. She discovered the highest level of bullying recorded in any single employment sector in the UK. Bullying in the Arts reveals Dr Quigg's findings, including the personal, organisational, legal and economic consequences of bullying behaviour. Looking at the experiences of countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Sweden, and the United States, this book challenges the notion that the arts are beyond the limitations of the ordinary milieu, exempt from the rules and regulations governing the treatment of employees. Arts managers and professionals, teachers, students and researchers in the arts world, and all those in management or management education, will find here a new model centred on management responses to bullying behaviour, which demonstrates the beneficial effect that knowledgeable, skilled action can have on the outcome of bullying incidents.

The Disfigured Face in American Literature, Film, and Television (Hardcover): Cornelia Klecker, Gudrun M. Grabher The Disfigured Face in American Literature, Film, and Television (Hardcover)
Cornelia Klecker, Gudrun M. Grabher
R4,498 Discovery Miles 44 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The face, being prominent and visible, is the foremost marker of a person's identity as well as their major tool of communication. Facial disfigurements, congenital or acquired, not only erase these significant capacities, but since ancient times, they have been conjured up as outrageous and terrifying, often connoting evil or criminality in their associations - a dark secret being suggested "behind the mask," the disfigurement indicating punishment for sin. Complemented by an original poem by Kenneth Sherman and a plastic surgeon's perspective on facial disfigurement, this book investigates the exploitation of these and further stereotypical tropes by literary authors, filmmakers, and showrunners, considering also the ways in which film, television, and the publishing industry have more recently tried to overcome negative codifications of facial disfigurement, in the search for an authentic self behind the veil of facial disfigurement. An exploration of fictional representations of the disfigured face, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology, cultural and media studies, American studies and literary studies with interests in representations of disfigurement and the Other.

The Sisters d' Aranyi (Hardcover): Joseph Macleod The Sisters d' Aranyi (Hardcover)
Joseph Macleod
R4,087 Discovery Miles 40 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1969, The Sisters d' Aranyi traces the careers, personalities and musical development of Jelly d' Aranyi and Adila Fachiri, outstanding violinists in Britain and Hungarian great nieces of Josef Joachim, with insight and a wealth of anecdote and description. The book contains fresh lights on figures such as Joachim himself, Elgar, Ravel and Vaughan Williams, Casals, Suggia, and Myra Hess, Aldous Huxley, Einstein and Schweitzer, Balfour, Asquith and Neville Chamberlain. There are illuminating comments on music from Bach to the present day, and also a chapter on the mysterious affair of the Imprisoned Schumann Violin Concerto, and how it was found and liberated. These two consummate musicians were, however, part of a movement towards greater sincerity in music- a tendency not yet sufficiently recorded by musicologists. To set them in their time, this biography contains a most readable history of music in Britain with some original observations on the nature of music itself in performance. This book is an essential read for students of music, music history, literature, performance studies, for violin players and also for general music lovers.

Wonder Woman - 80 Years Later (Hardcover): Vera J. Camden, Valentino L. Zullo Wonder Woman - 80 Years Later (Hardcover)
Vera J. Camden, Valentino L. Zullo
R4,489 Discovery Miles 44 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through a celebration and critique of the comics character of Wonder Woman, this collection takes up the historical trends that have changed the world of comics, American popular culture, and feminism. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the comic book super heroine Wonder Woman in 2016, Kent State University and the Cleveland Public Library partnered to celebrate the intersections of public literacy, comics, and feminism in a jointly sponsored symposium. Centering on the figure of Wonder Woman, the special issue of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics that this volume is based on collected the presentations and interviews from the event. This book will fortuitously appear in honor of Wonder Woman's 80th anniversary and pays respect to "herstory" while recognizing her perpetual relevance to our present day, and beyond. Like its progenitor, it reflects the historical trends that have changed the world of comics, American popular culture, and feminism so relevant to our current moment. It also highlights an interview with Mariko Tamaki, the current writer of Wonder Woman comics, as well as new editorial reflections in a Foreword and an Afterword.

Stereo: Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain (Hardcover, New Ed): Philippe... Stereo: Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain (Hardcover, New Ed)
Philippe Le Guern; Edited by Hugh Dauncey
R4,647 Discovery Miles 46 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The term 'Popular Music' has traditionally denoted different things in France and Britain. In France, the very concept of 'popular' music has been fiercely debated and contested, whereas in Britain and more largely throughout what the French describe as the 'Anglo-saxon' world 'popular music' has been more readily accepted as a description of what people do as leisure or consume as part of the music industry, and as something that academics are legitimately entitled to study. French researchers have for some decades been keenly interested in reading British and American studies of popular culture and popular music and have often imported key concepts and methodologies into their own work on French music, but apart from the widespread use of elements of 'French theory' in British and American research, the 'Anglo-saxon' world has remained largely ignorant of particular traditions of the study of popular music in France and specific theoretical debates or organizational principles of the making and consuming of French musics. French, British and American research into popular music has thus coexisted - with considerable cross-fertilization - for many years, but the barriers of language and different academic traditions have made it hard for French and anglophone researchers to fully appreciate the ways in which popular music has developed in their respective countries and the perspectives on its study adopted by their colleagues. This volume provides a comparative and contrastive perspective on popular music and its study in France and the UK.

The Empty Museum - Western Cultures and the Artistic Field in Modern Japan (Hardcover, New Ed): Masaaki Morishita The Empty Museum - Western Cultures and the Artistic Field in Modern Japan (Hardcover, New Ed)
Masaaki Morishita
R4,624 Discovery Miles 46 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the processes through which public art museums, as modern Western institutions, were introduced to Japan in the late nineteenth century and how they subsequently developed distinctive national characteristics. The author focuses on one of the most distinctive forms of Japanese museums: the 'empty museums' - museums without collections, permanent displays, and curators. Morishita shows how they developed, in relation to social and cultural conditions at certain periods in modern Japanese history, by engaging with a wide range of interdisciplinary theories, in particular, Pierre Bourdieu's field theory and the conceptual framework of transculturation. Japan is used as a case study to show in general terms how the elements of modern Western culture associated with public art museums were introduced and transformed in the local conditions of non-Western regions. With its unique empirical cases and theoretical focus, the book makes a significant contribution to existing literature in the field of museum studies, both in the English-speaking world and in Japan, and will be of interest to scholars and students of sociology, art history, cultural studies and Japanese studies.

Books, Bytes and Business - The Promise of Digital Publishing (Hardcover, New edition): Bill Martin, Xuemei Tian Books, Bytes and Business - The Promise of Digital Publishing (Hardcover, New edition)
Bill Martin, Xuemei Tian
R4,505 Discovery Miles 45 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How are businesses responding to global changes in markets driven by changes in technology? Whatever the industry, the trends are familiar: globalization and the rise of industrial conglomerates, mergers and acquisitions, the networking of businesses and markets, outsourcing and shifts in the distribution of resources and production, all reflected in the emergence of new players, new products and services and new forms of competition. As arguably the first knowledge-based business, book publishing provides an ideal setting for the study of challenge and opportunity. The industry is currently experiencing fierce levels of competition, extreme financial pressures, restructuring and the threat of technology-induced obsolescence. Added to these are the challenges posed by new and potential entrants to the market, the emergence of new products and services, new ways of doing business, including trading in virtual markets, and the vulnerability of traditional business models. The suitability of book publishing as a context for researching the emergence of knowledge-based business becomes all too apparent. Through combining primary research with secondary analysis drawn from the relevant literatures, Books, Bytes and Business is both a readable and informative account of business in the knowledge-based economy.

Curating with Care (Hardcover): Elke Krasny, Lara Perry Curating with Care (Hardcover)
Elke Krasny, Lara Perry
R3,856 Discovery Miles 38 560 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book presents over twenty authors' reflections on 'curating care' - and presents a call to give curatorial attention to the primacy of care for all life, and for more 'caring curating' that responds to the social, ecological and political analysis of curatorial caregiving. Social and ecological struggles for a different planetary culture based on care and respect for the dignity of life is reflected in contemporary curatorial practices that explore human and nonhuman interdependence. The prevalence of themes of care in curating is a response to a dual crisis: the crisis of social and ecological care that characterizes global politics, and the professional crisis of curating under the pressures of the increasingly commercialized cultural landscape. Foregrounding that all beings depend on each other for life and survival, this book collects theoretical essays, methodological challenges and case studies from curators working in different global geographies to explore the range of ways in which curatorial labour is rendered as care. Practicing curators, activists and theorists situate curatorial labour in the context of today's general care crisis. This volume answers to the call to more fully understand how their transformative work allows for imagining the future of bodily, social, and environmental care and the ethics of interdependency differently.

Art Practice in a Digital Culture (Hardcover, New Ed): Hazel Gardiner, Charlie Gere Art Practice in a Digital Culture (Hardcover, New Ed)
Hazel Gardiner, Charlie Gere
R4,638 Discovery Miles 46 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Much as art history is in the process of being transformed by new information communication technologies, often in ways that are either disavowed or resisted, art practice is also being changed by those same technologies. One of the most obvious symptoms of this change is the increasing numbers of artists working in universities, and having their work facilitated and supported by the funding and infrastructural resources that such institutions offer. This new paradigm of art as research is likely to have a profound effect on how we understand the role of the artist and of art practice in society. In this unique book, artists, art historians, art theorists and curators of new media reflect on the idea of art as research and how it has changed practice. Intrinsic to the volume is an investigation of the advances in creative practice made possible via artists engaging directly with technology or via collaborative partnerships between practitioners and technological experts, ranging through a broad spectrum of advanced methods from robotics through rapid prototyping to the biological sciences.

Gay People, Sex, and the Media (Hardcover): Michelle Wolf, Alfred Kielwasser Gay People, Sex, and the Media (Hardcover)
Michelle Wolf, Alfred Kielwasser
R4,507 Discovery Miles 45 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Here is a provocative book that examines precisely how and why mass communication has an impact upon the sexual realities of our lives. Written in response to a demand for information that cuts across many of the boundaries found in more traditional books on sexuality and mass communication, Gay People, Sex, and the Media covers a broad range of sexual identity, socialization, and mass communication issues and represents a variety of theoretical and methodological orientations. Although the chapters are diverse, they all focus on how the mass media--television, radio, films, newspapers, magazines, and recorded music--contribute significantly to the very definitions we form of ourselves and of each other. In part, this informative volume discusses and analyzes several concerns regarding minority perspectives in the context of the the study of mass media content and effects; analyzes mediated information about AIDS and highlights the responsibility of the mass media to disseminate more accurate information; addresses the relationships between mass media content (primarily television) and sexual socialization; explores issues confronted by individuals whose sexual orientations are generally perceived as falling out of the mainstream; and provides a selective bibliography of print, aural, and visual resources on gay men, lesbians, and the mass media. Unique in contrast to other books of research on human sexuality and mass communication, Gay People, Sex, and the Media gives more than a passing reference to issues concerning sexual identity and gay and lesbian concerns. Scholars and students of human sexuality, especially those who wish to explore their field from a communications perspective, will find this to be a valuable book. It is also useful to communications researchers and teachers, particularly those studying mediated communications in society, media ethics, and sex and the media. Finally, for professionals involved in creating or monitoring media content or forging public policy and community action programs in response to these issues, this volume serves as an essential sourcebook.

Progress or Perish - Northern Perspectives on Social Change (Hardcover, New Ed): Sandra Wallenius-Korkalo Progress or Perish - Northern Perspectives on Social Change (Hardcover, New Ed)
Sandra Wallenius-Korkalo; Edited by Aini Linjakumpu
R4,917 Discovery Miles 49 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on contemporary and historical case studies from Finland, Sweden and Norway, Progress or Perish highlights the roles that art, culture and academic research play alongside technology and economics as bearers of change, approaching the study of progress from the human level. By turning attention towards communities and the everyday social activities of individuals in their socio-cultural and microhistorical contexts, this volume links the idea of progress to the emancipation and empowerment of collectives. Multidisciplinary in nature, Progress or Perish brings together the work of leading scholars to explore the changes that individual and social agency can effect. It engages with the wider theoretical and methodological debates to be of key interest to sociologists, geographers and anthropologists, as well as those with interests in gender studies, cultural and environmental history, literary studies and political science.

Britpop and the English Music Tradition (Hardcover, New Ed): Jon Stratton Britpop and the English Music Tradition (Hardcover, New Ed)
Jon Stratton; Edited by Andy Bennett
R4,629 Discovery Miles 46 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Britpop and the English Music Tradition is the first study devoted exclusively to the Britpop phenomenon and its contexts. The genre of Britpop, with its assertion of Englishness, evolved at the same time that devolution was striking deep into the hegemonic claims of English culture to represent Britain. It is usually argued that Britpop, with its strident declarations of Englishness, was a response to the dominance of grunge. The contributors in this volume take a different point of view: that Britpop celebrated Englishness at a time when British culture, with its English hegemonic core, was being challenged and dismantled. It is now timely to look back on Britpop as a cultural phenomenon of the 1990s that can be set into the political context of its time, and into the cultural context of the last fifty years - a time of fundamental revision of what it means to be British and English. The book examines issues such as the historical antecedents of Britpop, the subjectivities governing the performative conventions of Britpop, the cultural context within which Britpop unfolded, and its influence on the post-Britpop music scene in the UK. While Britpop is central to the volume, discussion of this phenomenon is used as an opportunity to examine the particularities of English popular music since the turn of the twentieth century.
