Dramatic Discourse - Dialogue as Interaction in Plays (Paperback, Revised): Vimala Herman Dramatic Discourse - Dialogue as Interaction in Plays (Paperback, Revised)
Vimala Herman
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Whilst poetry and fiction have been subjected to extensive linguistic analysis, drama has long remained a neglected field for detailed study. Vimala Herman argues that drama should be of particular interest to linguists because of its form, dialogue and subsequent translation into performance. The subsequent interaction that occurs on stage is a rich and fruitful source of analysis and can be studied by using discourse methods that linguists employ for real-life interaction. Shakespeare, Pinter, Osborne, Beckett, Chekhov, and Shaw are just some of the dramatists whose material is drawn upon.
Each chapter contains a theoretical section in which major concepts of each framework are explained before the relevance of the framework to dramatic discourse is analyzed and explored using textual examples. This book will be of interest to undergraduates and postgraduates studying in the areas of literary linguistics and stylistics, or anyone specialising in the relationship between the text and performance.

Thinking and Speaking in a Second Language (Paperback): Yi Wang, Li Wei Thinking and Speaking in a Second Language (Paperback)
Yi Wang, Li Wei
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Does the language we speak affect the way we think? This Element provides a synthesis of contemporary research on the interplay between language and cognition in speakers of two or more languages and examines variables deemed to impact bilingual acquisition and conceptualization of language-specific thinking patterns during L2 learning. An overview of different yet interrelated studies is offered across a variety of conceptual domains to illustrate different approaches and key variables. The comparison of monolingual and bilingual data demonstrates the highly integrative nature between L2 learning and the changing of one's entire cognitive outlook in L2 speakers. This Element makes relevant connections between language learning and bilingual cognition, aiming to shed new light on how learners acquire conceptual distinctions of the target language(s). It also raises theoretical and pedagogical issues that encourage teachers to reflect upon how to incorporate recent advances in language-and-cognition research with aspects of L2 teaching.

The Language of Displayed Art (Paperback, Revised): Michael O'Toole The Language of Displayed Art (Paperback, Revised)
Michael O'Toole
R1,686 Discovery Miles 16 860 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Language of Displayed Art, first published in 1994, is a seminal work in the field of Multimodality and one of the few to be entirely dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of works of art.

This book explores the "grammar" of the visual arts of painting, sculpture and architecture, proposing that as viewers we simultaneously read three different kinds of meaning in them:

  • what is represented (Representational meaning)
  • how it engages us (Modal meaning)
  • how it is composed (Compositional meaning).

The second edition features: two new chapters; an extended discussion of Chapter 5 "Why Semiotics"; and an extended version of Chapter 7 with more illustrations of language forms, discourse norms and genres, as well as non-art visual modes. The book is now accompanied by a CD, created by the author and features a virtual gallery of twenty-eight additional paintings with questions to encourage analysis and interpretation, and model answers to these questions in the book s appendix. The CD also includes a notebook for readers to record their own observations and ideas.

The Language of Displayed Art is an indispensable text for those studying Multimodality, Applied Linguistics, Language and Art.

The Idea of Progress in Forensic Authorship Analysis (Paperback): Tim Grant The Idea of Progress in Forensic Authorship Analysis (Paperback)
Tim Grant
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Element examines progress in research and practice in forensic authorship analysis. It describes the existing research base and examines what makes an authorship analysis more or less reliable. Further to this, the author describes the recent history of forensic science and the scientific revolution brought about by the invention of DNA evidence. They chart the rise of three major changes in forensic science - the recognition of contextual bias in analysts, the need for validation studies and shift in logic of providing identification evidence. This Element addresses the idea of progress in forensic authorship analysis in terms of these three issues with regard to new knowledge about the nature of authorship and methods in stylistics and stylometry. The author proposes that the focus needs to shift to validation of protocols for approaching case questions, rather than on validation of systems or general approaches. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Lingo - A Language Spotter's Guide to Europe (Paperback, Main): Gaston Dorren Lingo - A Language Spotter's Guide to Europe (Paperback, Main)
Gaston Dorren; Edited by Jonathan Buckley; Translated by Alison Edwards 1
R404 R276 Discovery Miles 2 760 Save R128 (32%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Welcome to Europe as you've never known it before, seen through the peculiarities of its languages and dialects. Combining linguistics and cultural history, Gaston Dorren takes us on an intriguing tour of the continent, from Proto-Indo-European (the common ancestor of most European languages) to the rise and rise of English, via the complexities of Welsh plurals and Czech pronunciation. Along the way we learn why Esperanto will never catch on, how the language of William the Conqueror lives on in the Channel Islands and why Finnish is the easiest European language. Surprising, witty and full of extraordinary facts, this book will change the way you think about the languages around you. Polyglot Gaston Dorren might even persuade you that English is like Chinese.

Becoming-Social in a Networked Age (Paperback): Neal Thomas Becoming-Social in a Networked Age (Paperback)
Neal Thomas
R1,256 Discovery Miles 12 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the semiotic effects of protocols and algorithms at work in popular social media systems, bridging philosophical conversations in human-computer interaction (HCI) and information systems (IS) design with contemporary work in critical media, technology and software studies. Where most research into social media is sociological in scope, Neal Thomas shows how the underlying material-semiotic operations of social media now crucially define what it means to be social in a networked age. He proposes that we consider social media platforms as computational processes of collective individuation that produce, rather than presume, forms of subjectivity and sociality.

Language, Corpus and Empowerment - Applications to deaf education, healthcare and online discourses (Paperback): Luke Collins Language, Corpus and Empowerment - Applications to deaf education, healthcare and online discourses (Paperback)
Luke Collins
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Language, Corpus and Empowerment applies a novel corpus-driven approach to the exploration of the concept of empowerment in healthcare. The book proposes an innovative corpus-based methodology for finding evidence of empowerment in language use, using data from a video intervention delivered to families of deaf children, as well as assessing the effects of the intervention on the family. Language, Corpus and Empowerment provides a working definition of empowerment which incorporates concepts from linguistics and learning theory; uses corpus analysis to provide evidence of how video interventions can transform people's perspectives; examines this new methodology as a potential tool for analysing conversational data longitudinally and at a case-by-case level; demonstrates how a corpus-based methodological approach can be applied in conjunction with other language-based approaches, such as discourse analysis and conversation analysis, to explore the ways in which complex social processes occur in interaction; makes a valuable development in the assessment of the impact of healthcare interventions and the language of empowerment. Insightful and ground-breaking, Language, Corpus and Empowerment is essential reading for anyone undertaking research within corpus linguistics.

Political Discourse as Dialogue - A Latin American Perspective (Paperback): Adriana Bolivar Political Discourse as Dialogue - A Latin American Perspective (Paperback)
Adriana Bolivar
R1,259 Discovery Miles 12 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

We are witnessing the collapse of democracies in many parts of the world and a general tendency to the resurgence of right-wing and left-wing populisms led by authoritarian leaders. This book centres on the political dialogue in one of these democracies. The focus is on Venezuela, the rich Latin American oil producing country, and its transformation from a stable democracy to a very unstable and controversial revolution in which the dialogue has been occupied by only one party for 18 years. The central characters of the book are Hugo Chavez, who remained in power for 14 years as the main speaker and controller, and the people who either followed or opposed him in Venezuela and other countries. Contrary to critical analyses which are mainly based on social representations that conceive dialogue as implicit or normative, this book proposes a dialogue-centred approach, which articulates linguistics, conversation analysis, socio-pragmatics and political science from a critical perspective, and offers the theoretical foundations and procedures for analysing micro dialogues between specific persons and the macro social dialogue, which unveils the processes of domination and resistance to power. The book will be useful for scholars and students of linguistics, media, communication studies and political science wishing to learn more about dialogue in political interaction.

Arabic Idioms - A Corpus Based Study (Paperback): Ashraf Abdou Arabic Idioms - A Corpus Based Study (Paperback)
Ashraf Abdou
R1,293 Discovery Miles 12 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Idioms represent a fascinating linguistic phenomenon that has captured the attention of many linguists for decades. This corpus-based study of idioms in Modern Standard Arabic sheds light on their intricate nature, establishes the major patterns of their linguistic behaviour, and provides explanations for these patterns. Adopting a descriptive framework, the study addresses two main issues with regard to the discursive behaviour of idioms: the discursive functions that they perform and the ways in which they contribute to the cohesion of their texts. Examining primary data with regard to the semantic, discursive, lexical and grammatical properties of Arabic idioms, the author touches on the ubiquity of these expressions in language use, the wide range of functions they perform in discourse, the problems they often cause in domains such as foreign language learning and translation, and their typical divergence from the normal rules of grammar and semantic compositionality. Providing explanations for major linguistic phenomena, this analysis will be accessible to linguists, translators, lexicographers, translation software developers, and language teachers as well as learners.

Public Spheres of Resonance - Constellations of Affect and Language (Hardcover): Anne Fleig, Christian Von Scheve Public Spheres of Resonance - Constellations of Affect and Language (Hardcover)
Anne Fleig, Christian Von Scheve
R3,536 Discovery Miles 35 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To understand the profound changes in the modes of public political debate over the past decade, this volume develops a new conception of public spheres as spaces of resonance emerging from the power of language to affect and to ascribe and instill collective emotion. Political discourse is no longer confined to traditional media, but increasingly takes place in fragmented and digital public spheres. At the same time, the modes of political engagement have changed: discourse is said to increasingly rely on strategies of emotionalization and to be deeply affective at its core. This book meticulously shows how public spheres are rooted in the emotional, bodily, and affective dimensions of language, and how language - in its capacity to affect and to be affected - produces those dynamics of affective resonance that characterize contemporary forms of political debate. It brings together scholars from the humanities and social sciences and focuses on two fields of inquiry: publics, politics, and media in Part I, and language and artistic inquiry in Part II. The thirteen chapters provide a balanced composition of theoretical and methodological considerations, focusing on highly illustrative case studies and on different artistic practices. The volume is an indispensable source for researchers and postgraduate students in cultural studies, literary studies, sociology, and political science. It likewise appeals to practitioners seeking to develop an in-depth understanding of affect in contemporary political debate.

The Rhetoric of Roman Transportation - Vehicles in Latin Literature (Paperback, New Ed): Jared Hudson The Rhetoric of Roman Transportation - Vehicles in Latin Literature (Paperback, New Ed)
Jared Hudson
R848 Discovery Miles 8 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Latin literature is crowded with portraits of Romans in transit, but despite this ubiquity scholars have been reluctant to read vehicles as significant conveyors of textual and cultural meaning. This book offers the first systematic analysis of the representation of Roman vehicles in Latin literary texts. By moving past approaches that count such vehicular portrayals as either transparent glimpses of reality or soaring poetic symbols, it demonstrates how these conveyances work as a system of representation to structure both the texts in which they appear and underlying cultural discourses surrounding power, gender, and empire. Arranged as a series of interlocking studies, each chapter explores the representation of a particular conveyance across author and text, from the humblest and most quotidian (plaustrum) to the most exalted and symbol-laden (currus).

The Pedagogies and Politics of Liking (Paperback): Kevin J Burke, Adam Greteman The Pedagogies and Politics of Liking (Paperback)
Kevin J Burke, Adam Greteman
R1,129 Discovery Miles 11 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the usage and significance of the word "like" across a wide range of disciplines, focusing in particular on its influence in education and pedagogy. From the advent of the "like button" on Facebook to the common verbal tic, liking has become an integral part of our everyday lives. By drawing on feminist, queer, and other critical traditions, the authors evaluate this phenomenon in order to interrogate its history, its linguistic function, its role in labor and economics, and its ties to, and separation from, religion. As the notion of "like" becomes more and more ubiquitous, this critical volume demonstrates the need to consider like, liking, and likeability when thinking about the institutions that impact us daily.

Routledge Revivals: Chaucer, Langland, and the Creative Imagination (1980) (Paperback): David Aers Routledge Revivals: Chaucer, Langland, and the Creative Imagination (1980) (Paperback)
David Aers
R1,054 Discovery Miles 10 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1980, this study of two renowned later fourteenth century English poets, Chaucer and Langland, concentrates on some major and representative aspects of their work. Aers shows that, in contrast to the mass conventional writing of the period, which was happy to accept and propagate traditional ideologies, Chaucer and Langland were preoccupied with actual conflicts, strains, and developments in received ideologies and social practices. He demonstrates that they were genuinely exploratory, and created work which actively questioned dominant ideologies, even those which they themselves revered and hoped to affirm. For Chaucer and Langland the imagination was indeed creative, involved in the active construction of meanings, and in their poetry they grasped and explored social commitments, religious developments and many perplexing contradictions which were subverting inherited paradigms.

Technologies of Being in Martin Heidegger - Nearness, Metaphor and the Question of Education in Digital Times (Paperback): Anna... Technologies of Being in Martin Heidegger - Nearness, Metaphor and the Question of Education in Digital Times (Paperback)
Anna Kouppanou
R1,369 Discovery Miles 13 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Technologies of Being in Martin Heidegger attempts to deepen the dialogue between philosophy of education and philosophy of technology, while engaging with the thought of Heidegger, Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler. Through a critical reading of Heidegger's central notion of nearness, this book argues that thinking is intricately conditioned by technologically produced images, which are themselves interacting with imagination's schematizing power. The book further discusses how certain metaphorical synthesising processes, which are currently industrialized taking the form of social networking sites and search engines, discretise human behaviour and reorganise it in ways that often marginalise human interpretation and redefine nearness. Finally, it suggests how we might reconceptualise technology and education as processes of human individuation. Technologies of Being in Martin Heidegger will be of great interest to scholars in the fields of philosophy of education, philosophy of technology, literary studies, cognitive linguistics and cognitive neuroscience.
