Have you ever felt there was more to your horse than most people
presume? If so, you are probably right. What we take for granted
from our horses has long been dismissed as simple instinct, but
horses have the capacity for complex emotions, intelligence, and a
consciousness not commonly accepted as a trait of the animal
kingdom. Horses have demonstrated "human" traits such as humor and
compassion for as long as we have shared the earth, and it is up to
us to figure out what we have in common to improve our
communication skills with them.
"Because of the many human attributes people assign to horses,
describing them as stubborn, uncooperative, or hateful, they find
themselves standing at the edge of a wide communication gap. The
only way to break the cycle of tension is to narrow that
communication gap. How to do so can be partly explained in equine
psychology books. The other part is to understand horses on an
emotional level."
In "I Am Equus, " you'll get to know horses that have demonstrated
amazing trust, survived against all odds, formed lifelong
friendships, made people laugh, and taught others inspirational
life lessons. Some have even saved lives. At last, Equus is
presented in his true intellectual and emotional potential.

When his son Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson was
devastated, afraid he might never be able to communicate with his
child. But when Isaacson, a lifelong horseman, rode their neighbor's
horse with Rowan, Rowan improved immeasurably. He was struck with a
crazy idea: why not take Rowan to Mongolia, the one place in the
world where horses and shamanic healing intersected?
THE HORSE BOY is the dramatic and heartwarming story of that
impossible adventure. In Mongolia, the family found undreamed of
landscapes and people, unbearable setbacks, and advances beyond
their wildest dreams. This is a deeply moving, truly one-of-a-kind
story--of a family willing to go to the ends of the earth to help
their son, and of a boy learning to connect with the world for the
first time."
In the 1950s - as tractors displaced the use of Highland ponies on
our farms - the breed found a new purpose in pony trekking. In this
book Heidi Sands captures the essence of Highland ponies, depicting

Originally published in 1897, This little work is intended as a
guide to those who have to do with horses, either as owners,
purchasers, breeders, trainers, managers, or attendants, and whose
experience has not been so extensive as those on whose knowledge it
is based. There is no pretence whatever to novelty in any of the
subjects treated; but it is to be hoped that such absence of
novelty will not detract from utility, and that the hints contained
in its pages may be found of service, and assist those who are
interested in horses and horse management when they require
assistance. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating
back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these
classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using
the original text and artwork. Contents Include: Breeds of Horses -
Purchasing Horses at Fairs - The Paddock, Straw-Yard, Stable and
Stabling - Feeding and General Management - Riding and Hunting -
Harness and Driving - The Tradesman's Horse and Family Pony -
Breeding, Foaling and Foal Rearing - Breaking and Training - The
Ass and Mule - Shoeing, Diseases and Injuries of the Foot -
Injuries, Lameness and Disease

Straight from the Horse's Heart: A Spiritual Ride through Love,
Loss, and Hope by new author R. T. Fitch is an altogether special
book that sows more than a few wild oats of goodness, inspiration,
and heart. This thoughtful and endearing collection of thirty
distinct and timeless vignettes is rich and wise. Whether it is the
rescue of a missing pony after a hurricane near the Gulf of Mexico
or the heartfelt whinny of an abused horse in Nigeria, the author
composes beautiful and poetic images on life. While this book's
significance is universal, animal and horse lovers are especially
in for a treat as loss, turmoil, and grief are intertwined with
heroic tales of survival and human empathy. With titles such as "I
Sit in Wonder," "She Stole My Heart," and "Whispers in the Night,"
on these pages is love and symmetry. This collection showcases the
contemplative places of the heart, which we are able to learn from
his four-legged friends, if we take time to listen closely enough.

This fourth edition of "The Mule Companion" is a comprehensive
book on mules with new photos of many real people and mules doing
real mule activities. "The Mule Companion" has been called an
excellent 'mule primer' for those people just getting into mules.
However, the book also hosts an in-depth study of why mules do what
they do, their idiosyncrasies, training, and problem solving. Also,
the book is rich with 'how to' information on: caring for, breeding
for, fitting tack on, buying, and mule activities, past and
present.
About the Author:
Cynthia Attar, previously a mule trainer-schooled by the mule
itself, learned how the mule mind works. Using this information,
she obtained amazing results without force, fear, or pain. With a
deep love for mules, Cynthia now empowers others to understand
these long-eared equines, and aims to show how great mules truly
are and to show the bond that mules and their people share.
Currently as one who communicates with all animals, and aids in
their healing, Cynthia resides in Washington State with her animal
friends. She continues to write and share her passions with the
world.
The horse is an essential component of New Zealand's social,
environmental, economic and military history. Yet despite this
obvious truth, it is a topic which was been overlooked by New
Zealand historiography. The horse's role throughout New Zealand's
history has been identified by prominent environmental historians
as an area in desperate need of examination; however, it is one yet
to be undertaken. In an effort to start filling the gap in New
Zealand's equine historiography, The Good Steed will use the late
nineteenth and early twentieth century military context as a
microcosm for the history of New Zealand's horse. This is an
informed hypothesis of what New Zealand's military horse
experienced in these two modern wars. In essence, history from the
horse's point-of-view. The nature of war is awful in itself, but
when animals are unconsciously included in the context, as horses
were in these two modern wars, the impact of the experience is, as
you will see, nothing less than horrific.
2009 Reprint edition of 1961. Sonora Carver was an American
entertainer, most notable as one of the first female horse divers.
Carver answered an ad placed by "Doc" William Frank Carver in 1923
for a diving girl and soon earned a place in circus history. Her
job was to mount a running horse as it reached the top of a
forty-foot (sometimes sixty-foot) tower and sail down along the
animal's back as it plunged into a deep pool of water directly
below. Sonora was a sensation and soon became the lead diving girl
for Doc Carver's act as they traveled the country. In 1931, Sonora
was blinded, a retinal detachment, due to hitting the water
off-balance with her eyes open.while diving her horse, Red Lips, on
New Jersey's Steel Pier, the act's permanent home since 1929. After
her accident Sonora continued to dive horses until 1942.
Called upon to rescue a miniature mare, the United States Equine
Rescue League found the mare lifeless and unresponsive. She was
immediately taken to NC State University College of Veterinary
Medicine, where she began her extremely difficult road to recovery.
Sassy tells her story from her point of view, beginning with her
early life with her mother and other horses and the wonderful human
caregivers who provide for them. She takes the reader through the
unexplained change in her circumstances, life before her rescue,
her near-death experience, and ultimately, her rescue by USERL. Her
tenacity and determination to survive is amazing, and she now leads
a life in an idylic setting with loving human caregivers. This book
is writen for horse-lovers of all ages, and a large portion of the
proceeds from the sale of this book is donated to organizations
which rescue and rehabilitate horses who've been abused and
neglected.

Since moving west over a decade ago, Tom Groneberg has worked with
horses as a trail guide, as a ranch hand, and as the manager of his
own ranch in Montana, but he has never owned a really good horse.
Until, on an autumn night, in a warm barn under a blanket of snow,
Blue is born. Soon, he will belong to Tom Groneberg. "If I had a
good horse," writes Tom, "I could give it my life. I could ride it
for years. We could grow old together." So begins this unique
American love story about a man and his horse.
In straightforward, poetic prose, Tom Groneberg chronicles the
early successes and failures of trying to train Blue, earning the
animal's trust, and saddling him for the first time. The experience
is challenging, but ultimately rewarding for Tom. Through his
relationship with the animal, he develops a deeper understanding of
the land and his community, and of himself -- as a man, and as a
husband and father. In a world in which horses are fast becoming
nothing more than warm-blooded lawn ornaments, Tom still believes
these animals are important in human lives.
At its heart, "One Good Horse" is about the power of hope, the
simple story of a horse and the way people connect with nature and
with each other across the generations.
