The Evolution of European Identities - Biographical Approaches (Hardcover): Graham Day, Robert Miller The Evolution of European Identities - Biographical Approaches (Hardcover)
Graham Day, Robert Miller
R1,537 Discovery Miles 15 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 'European project' is in a state of perpetual crisis in which the root cause is a lack of identification by ordinary citizens with Europe and European institutions. The Evolution of European Identities employs state of the art analysis of in-depth interviews by renowned practitioners to give a unique 'bottoms up' perspective on the development (or its lack) of a sense of 'European mental space'. Linking conceptual findings with case studies, the book provides unique insights into groups that have been especially sensitized by their life experiences to question what it means to be European in the twenty-first century. The groups explored in this book include: adults who experienced European education exchanges when young; transnational workers; civil society organization activists; persons involved in cross-border intimate relationships; farmers who are subject to European markets, regulations and subsidies; and migrants into 'fortress Europe'.

Fabrics of Indianness - The Exchange and Consumption of Clothing in Transnational Guyanese Hindu Communities (Hardcover, 1st... Fabrics of Indianness - The Exchange and Consumption of Clothing in Transnational Guyanese Hindu Communities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Sinah Theres Kloss
R3,923 Discovery Miles 39 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book describes how Guyanese Hindus recreate Indian ethnic identity in contemporary Guyana and examines how Hindu traditions have been transformed in this multi-religious and multi-ethnic society. By illustrating the exchange and consumption of clothing, the book demonstrates that the practices of wearing and gifting clothes materialize and visualize relationships. The significant outward migration of Guyanese to North America has resulted in substantial international gift exchange and transnational rituals. Applying the concept of translocality, this book demonstrates that different localities continue to influence transnational networks and socio-cultural practices. It provides a study of migration that emphasizes various aspects of material and visual closeness, conceptualizing the notion of touch.

Solidarity in the European Union - A Fundamental Value in Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Andreas Grimmel, Susanne My Giang Solidarity in the European Union - A Fundamental Value in Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Andreas Grimmel, Susanne My Giang
R4,172 Discovery Miles 41 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume approaches the current crisis of solidarity in the European Union from a multidisciplinary perspective. The contributions explore the concept of solidarity, its role in the European integration process, and analyze the risks entailed by a lack of solidarity. Experts from various academic fields, such as political science, law, sociology, and philosophy, shed new light on contemporary challenges such as the migrant and refugee crisis, the Eurozone crisis, nationalist and separatist movements, and Brexit. Finally, they also discuss different solutions for the most pressing problems in EU politics. The book has two main aims: Firstly, to show that solidarity is a key element in solving the EU's contemporary problems; and secondly, to reveal how the crisis of solidarity has become a crucial test for the integration project, as the nature of the crisis goes beyond the well-known shortcomings in the EU's structure and problem-solving capacities.

Also, the book engages in a systematic examination of adaptation experiences through the lenses of existing theories of adaptation, and fills a gap in the literature on this understudied immigrant population. Using the latest quantitative data, Nina Michalikova contributes to the field of immigration studies by revealing the diverse adaptation experiences of contemporary American immigrants through cross-country and cross-group comparisons.

Decolonizing Literacy - Mexican Lives in the Era of Global Capitalism (Paperback, New): Gregorio Hernandez-Zamora Decolonizing Literacy - Mexican Lives in the Era of Global Capitalism (Paperback, New)
Gregorio Hernandez-Zamora
R955 Discovery Miles 9 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Millions of descendants of the former colonized and enslaved peoples around the world are now classified as poor readers, bad writers, and slow learners. Are they illiterate or silenced people? Are they global citizens or global outcasts? Drawing from case studies of flesh and blood individuals in Mexico and the U.S., this book questions the colonizing images of the "illiterate", and explores the ways in which the long social history of conquest and colonization, plunder and globalization, is inscribed in the personal histories of today's subjugated people. It argues that rather than "limited literacy skills" they face systematic lack of freedom to speak, act, and make decisions about their own lives. Literacy, thus, is understood as a key practice of voice and citizenship.

Migrant Citizenship from Below - Family, Domestic Work, and Social Activism in Irregular Migration (Hardcover): K. Shinozaki Migrant Citizenship from Below - Family, Domestic Work, and Social Activism in Irregular Migration (Hardcover)
K. Shinozaki
R1,938 Discovery Miles 19 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Migrant Citizenship from Below explores the dynamic local and transnational lives of Filipina and Filipino migrant domestic workers living in Schoenberg, Germany. Shinozaki examines their irregular migrant citizenship status from 'above', which is produced by complex interactions between Germany's welfare, care, and migration regimes and the Philippines' gendered politics of overseas employment. Despite the predominant representation of these workers as invisible, these spatially immobile migrants maintain sustained transnational engagements through parenting and religious practices. Shinozaki studies the reverse-gendered process of international reproductive labor migration, in which women traveled first and were later joined by men. Despite their structural vulnerability, participant observations and biographical interviews with the migrants demonstrate that they enact and negotiate migrant citizenship in the workplace, transnational households, religious practices and through accessing health provisions.

Siloed Diversity - Transnational Migration, Digital Media and Social Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Catherine Gomes Siloed Diversity - Transnational Migration, Digital Media and Social Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Catherine Gomes
R1,644 Discovery Miles 16 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the experiences of transient migrants in the Asia-Pacific, and in so doing provides new ways of understanding diversity. By focusing on the transient destination hubs of Australia and Singapore, Catherine Gomes shifts our thinking about diversity for two disruptive reasons: the increasingly large and global transient flows of people and our everyday reliance on digital media. The unprecedented usage of digital media influences not only communication patterns and information-seeking behaviour, but has also led to the rapid evolution of the very nature of entertainment and news, and directly impacted on our documenting and mapping of self (e.g. posts of photographs, opinions and links on social media timelines). The book introduces readers to the concept of siloed diversity - a phenomenon which occurs when people rely on a hierarchy of identities developed while in transience to make connections and disconnections with others.
