Making Institutions Work in South Africa (Paperback): Daniel Plaatjies Making Institutions Work in South Africa (Paperback)
Daniel Plaatjies
R399 R368 Discovery Miles 3 680 Save R31 (8%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Making Institutions Work places institutions, the processes and structures of institutionalisation at the centre of constitutional democracy, state and society. By doing so, it recognises that (a) institutions are the pillows of a constitutional democracy, (b) institutions evolve through the action of persons (agency); (c) institutions as organisations form structures of dynamic shared social patterns of behaviour through the implementation of a system of rule of law. The book offers an interdisciplinary critical commentary by scholars, analysts and experts regarding strategic thinking, form, structural and functional impediments and facilitators to institutions and institutionalisation.

States and Nations, Power and Civility - Hallsian Perspectives (Hardcover): Francesco Duina States and Nations, Power and Civility - Hallsian Perspectives (Hardcover)
Francesco Duina
R2,160 Discovery Miles 21 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Civility in national and international politics is under siege. In this volume, twelve distinguished sociologists and historians from North America, Europe, and China reflect on the nature and preservation of civility in and between nation states and empires in a set of geographically and historically wide-ranging chapters. Civility protects individual self-determination and expression, promotes productive economic activity and wealth, and is central to political stability and peace within and across political communities. Yet power, always concentrated and endemic in nation states and imperial settings, poses great risks to civility. Guided by the perspective of John A. Hall, who has done more to identify and investigate the intricate relationships between states, nations, the power they hold, and civility than any other contemporary social scientist, States and Nations, Power and Civility offers a set of crisp, in-depth investigations regarding the specific mechanisms of civility and how it may be protected.

Erwin H. Epstein
R3,971 R3,441 Discovery Miles 34 410 Save R530 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) is the oldest and largest body of its kind, and is a leader among the 44 members of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES). This book celebrates the CIES' 60th anniversary. The Society grew out of a series of conferences in the mid-1950s. Those conferences were attended by a small group of scholars in the USA who were keen to elucidate and expand their field. Now the Society has over 2,500 individual and about 900 institutional members (mainly libraries) around the world. The book explains how the Society was constructed and internationalized. It analyzes its development trajectory, its major structural components, and the programs and curricula that it has inspired and nourished. The significance of the book is not restricted to the CIES. It will certainly interest counterparts in other WCCES constituent societies and scholars from all fields who are concerned with institutional structures and their evolution.

Making Harvard Modern - The Rise of America's University (Hardcover): Morton Keller, Phyllis Keller Making Harvard Modern - The Rise of America's University (Hardcover)
Morton Keller, Phyllis Keller
R1,935 Discovery Miles 19 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Making Harvard Modern is a candid, richly detailed portrait of America's most prominent university from 1933 to the present: seven decades of dramatic change. Early twentieth century Harvard was the country's oldest and richest university, but not necessarily its outstanding one. By the century's end it was widely regarded as the nation's, and the world's, leading institution of higher education. With verve, humor, and insight, Morton and Phyllis Keller tell the story of that rise: a tale of compelling personalities, notable achievement and no less notable academic pratfalls. Their book is based on rich and revealing archival materials, interviews, and personal experience.

Young, humbly born James Bryant Conant succeeded Boston Brahmin A. Lawrence Lowell as Harvard's president in 1933, and set out to change a Brahmin-dominated university into a meritocratic one. He hoped to recruit the nation's finest scholars and an outstanding national student body. But the lack of new money during the Depression and the distractions of World War Two kept Conant, and Harvard, from achieving this goal.

In the 1950s and 1960s, during the presidency of Conant's successor Nathan Marsh Pusey, Harvard raised the money, recruited the faculty, and attracted the students that made it a great meritocratic institution: America's university. The authors provide the fullest account yet of this transformation, and of the wrenching campus crisis of the late 'sixties.

During the last thirty years of the twentieth century, a new academic culture arose: meritocratic Harvard morphed into worldly Harvard. During the presidencies of Derek Bok and Neil Rudenstine the university opened its doors to growing numbers of foreign students, women, African- and Asian-Americans, and Hispanics. Its administration, faculty, and students became more deeply engaged in social issues; its scientists and professional schools were more ready to enter into shared commercial ventures. But worldliness brought its own conflicts: over affirmative action and political correctness, over commercialization, over the ever higher costs of higher education.

This fascinating account, the first comprehensive history of a modern American university, is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the present state and future course of higher education.

Critical Theory, Politics and Society - An Introduction (Hardcover): Peter M.R. Stirk Critical Theory, Politics and Society - An Introduction (Hardcover)
Peter M.R. Stirk
R6,565 Discovery Miles 65 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An introduction to the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, providing an assessment of thinkers such as Pollock, Marcuse, Horkheimer, Adorno, Neumann, Lowenthal, Fromm, Kirchheimer and Habermas, and the political and intellectual context in which they worked. The account considers the political context of the formative work of the School against the background of the Weimar Republic and of Nazi Germany. It contrasts this with the very different background of 1950s Germany in which Habermas embarked on his academic career, and goes on to discuss the enduring relevance of critical theory to the contemporary political agenda. In particular, Stirk illustrates the continuing validity of the Frankfurt School's criticism of positivist, metaphysical, and, more recently, postmodernist views, and its members' attempts to incorporate psychological perspectives into broader theories of social dynamics. He assesses the School's contribution to key areas of contemporary debate including morality, interest, individual and collective identity and the analysis of authoritarian and democratic states.

Robert S Jordan, Clive Archer, Gregory P. Granger, Kerry Ordes
R2,810 R2,544 Discovery Miles 25 440 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This new edition of a classic text, comprehensively revised throughout, appraises the emerging challenges to the centrality of the nation-state international system, such as humanitarianism, environmentalism, new international legal standards, and concepts such as "civil society" and "globalism." As inter-governmental and international non-governmental activities are increasingly being blended, for example in the area of peace-keeping, this poses a challenge to the sanctity of the territorial state as the primary political unit. Similarly, technological and social changes such as the emergence of the Internet, encourages "borderless" activities (both legal and illegal) by non-state actors. This book provides the basis for students to consider a thorough rethinking of our international system and its prospects for the future in the face of these fundamental and unprecedented developments. While the book as a whole is built around the unifying theme of "the management of cooperation," illustrative cases enhance the individual chapters and provide the basis for comparative analysis and discussion. These take the reader through the tangled webs of international cooperation in such areas as the European Union, NATO, humanitarian intervention, arms control, transnational criminal organizations, and global environmental issues. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter add to the usefulness of this text for students.

Knowledge, Networks and Policy - Regional Studies in Postwar Britain and Beyond (Paperback): James Hopkins Knowledge, Networks and Policy - Regional Studies in Postwar Britain and Beyond (Paperback)
James Hopkins
R1,420 Discovery Miles 14 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'The region' has been used to understand and propose solutions to phenomena and problems outside the dominant spatial scale of the twentieth century - the nation state. Its influence can be seen in multiple social science disciplines and in public policy across the globe. But how was this knowledge organised and how were its concepts transmuted into public policy? This book charts the development of the academic field of Regional Studies and the application of its concepts in public policy through its learned society, the Regional Studies Association. In their modern form, learned societies often play a complementary role to universities, offering networks that operate in the spaces between and beyond universities, connecting specialised academics and knowledge and making it possible for them to have impact outside the academy. In contrast to the geographically tangible and popularly understood role of the university, contemporary learned societies are nebulous networks that transcend barriers and whose contribution is difficult to discern. However, the production and dissemination of knowledge would be stunted were it not for the learned society connecting scholars through a network of publications and events. This book traces the intellectual history of regional studies and regional science from the 1960s into the 2000s and the impact of the regional concept in public policy through the changing priorities of government in the UK and Europe. By approaching the history through the Regional Studies Association, it interrogates the role and function of the 'learned society' model of organisation in contemporary academia and importance as a knowledge exchange vehicle for public policy influence.

The New Transnationalism - Transnational Governance and Democratic Legitimacy (Hardcover): K. Dingwerth The New Transnationalism - Transnational Governance and Democratic Legitimacy (Hardcover)
K. Dingwerth
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Global rules are increasingly made without the direct involvement of states. This book explores what this privatisation of global rule-making means for democracy. Based on contemporary theoretical approaches to democratic global governance, it reconstructs three prominent rule-making processes in the field of global sustainability politics: the World Commission on Dams, the Global Reporting Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council. The book argues that, if designed properly, private transnational rule-making can be as democratic as intergovernmental rule-making.

Introduction to Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic, and Fuzzy Control Systems (Hardcover): Guanrong Chen, Trung Tat Pham Introduction to Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic, and Fuzzy Control Systems (Hardcover)
Guanrong Chen, Trung Tat Pham
R5,499 Discovery Miles 54 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the early 1970s, fuzzy systems and fuzzy control theories added a new dimension to control systems engineering. From its beginnings as mostly heuristic and somewhat ad hoc, more recent and rigorous approaches to fuzzy control theory have helped make it an integral part of modern control theory and produced many exciting results. Yesterday's "art" of building a working fuzzy controller has turned into today's "science" of systematic design.

To keep pace with and further advance the rapidly developing field of applied control technologies, engineers, both present and future, need some systematic training in the analytic theory and rigorous design of fuzzy control systems. Introduction to Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic, and Fuzzy Control Systems provides that training by introducing a rigorous and complete fundamental theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, and then building a practical theory for automatic control of uncertain and ill-modeled systems encountered in many engineering applications. The authors proceed through basic fuzzy mathematics and fuzzy systems theory and conclude with an exploration of some industrial application examples.

Almost entirely self-contained, Introduction to Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic, and Fuzzy Control Systems establishes a strong foundation for designing and analyzing fuzzy control systems under uncertain and irregular conditions. Mastering its contents gives students a clear understanding of fuzzy control systems theory that prepares them for deeper and broader studies and for many practical challenges faced in modern industry.

Reconfiguring Institutions Across Time and Space - Syncretic Responses to Challenges of Political and Economic Transformation... Reconfiguring Institutions Across Time and Space - Syncretic Responses to Challenges of Political and Economic Transformation (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
D. Galvan, R. Sil
R1,410 Discovery Miles 14 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume explores the unanticipated consequences of emulating, importing, or imposing new institutional models without commensurate attention to the particular constellations of interests, identities, norms, and social relations embedded in local communities. Each chapter is organized around a common problematic that has received only limited attention in the literature on institutional change: the dilemmas of deploying the rules, practices, and design of institutions that have been imported or imposed from external environments in regions where actors are more familiar with and find more legitimate locally embedded norms, practices, social relations, and knowledge structures. The volume strives to illustrate the analytic power of the concept of 'syncretism, ' a concept that can be fruitfully deployed to analyze common aspects of institutional change not easily captured in existing frameworks.

Poverty, Growth and Institutions in Developing Asia (Hardcover): Anil B. Deolalikar Poverty, Growth and Institutions in Developing Asia (Hardcover)
Anil B. Deolalikar; Edited by Ernesto M. Pernia, Anil B. Deolalikar
R2,691 Discovery Miles 26 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The theme of this book is that economic growth is key, but institutions and other national and subnational attributes matter as well. They are critical to explaining differences in social development and poverty reduction across countries and subnational areas that cannot be accounted for by growth alone. The book concludes that a more complete strategy needs to consider various institutional factors at the national and subnational levels to achieve rapid and sustained poverty reduction. Indeed, paying attention to these factors will benefit both growth and poverty reduction.

Negotiating Gendered Identities at Work - Place, Space and Time (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): S. Halford Negotiating Gendered Identities at Work - Place, Space and Time (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
S. Halford
R1,400 Discovery Miles 14 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Drawing on the heritage of research that demonstrates the thoroughly gendered nature of work organizations, this book explores a key question that, as yet, remains unanswered: how does gendered organizational life affect individuals' identities as they go about their everyday working lives? This question is explored with theoretical insights from disciplines including sociology, geography, history and gender studies interwoven with a major new empirical study of doctors and nurses working in the British National Health Service.
