This pocket-sized book is an essential companion for all
anaesthetists, intensive care specialists, intensive care nurses or
any other healthcare professional working in the perioperative or
intensive care environment. It provides a readily available source
of information and guidance, mostly in the form of easy-to-follow
tables, line drawings and flow diagrams, on many aspects of
anaesthesia and intensive care, including normal values for common
biochemical and haematological tests (and their interpretation),
resuscitation protocols, equipment checklists, paediatric
information and dosage differences, ventilation, sedation and
analgesia and classification systems such as the APACHE II and
Glasgow Coma Scales.
This comprehensive book provides an in-depth examination of a broad
range of procedures that benefit from ultrasound guidance in the
point-of-care setting. It covers common procedures such as
ultrasound-guided central and peripheral venous access to regional
nerve blocks, temporary pacemaker placement, joint aspirations,
percutaneous drainage, a variety of injections and airway
management. Chapters examine a variety of topics critical to
successful ultrasound procedures, including relevant sonoantomy,
necessary equipment, proper preparation, potential complications,
existing evidence and how to integrate these procedures into
clinical practice. For each procedure, the book includes
step-by-step instructions and discusses the advantages of
ultrasound guidance over traditional techniques. Providing rich
procedural detail to help in clinical decision making, The Ultimate
Guide to Point-of-Care Ultrasound-Guided Procedures is an
indispensable, go-to reference for all health care providers who
work in a variety of clinical settings including primary care,
emergency department, urgent care, intensive care units,
pediatrics, pre-hospital settings and those who practice in the
growing number of new ultrasound programs in these specialties.
Patients with tracheotomies are managed by a wide variety of
healthcare professionals. As a result, information regarding best
practice is scattered throughout the medical literature and can be
difficult to identify and implement in the clinical setting.
Tracheotomy Management: A Multidisciplinary Approach is a practical
review of all tracheotomy procedures and acute and chronic
tracheotomy care. It combines evidence-based practice and expert
opinion to create an invaluable hands-on guide for any healthcare
provider managing patients with tracheotomies. Each chapter is
authored by at least two different subspecialists, contains case
studies with real-life examples of problematic clinical scenarios,
and is enhanced by high quality colour images and algorithms. The
rationale for different approaches is discussed to guide the
decision-making process. Written and edited by tracheotomy experts
from a wide variety of disciplines, Tracheotomy Management: A
Multidisciplinary Approach is essential reading for
anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and critical care and
emergency physicians. * A clinically-oriented reference which
addresses difficult issues; appropriate timing of an elective
tracheostomy, key management differences, and patient advice *
Written and edited by experts from a wide variety of disciplines
and subspecialties * Algorithms and colour photographs enhance the
text throughout, illustrating the issues and interventions

From World Health Organization data, the prevalence of hearing
impairment among infants varies between 0.5 and 3.0 cases per
thousand, but in children hospitalised in the Newborn Intensive
Care Unit (NICU) and in those with other risk factors (ie:
anatomically small for gestational age, craniofacial abnormalities,
intrauterine infections, family history of hearing loss, ototoxic
drugs, mechanical ventilation , etc.), the prevalence is 10-20
times greater. Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be defined as
an intensive care unit for sick newborns who need specialised
treatment. NICU combines equipment and advanced technology with
medical staff specially trained in newborn care. The Joint
Committee on Infants Hearing (JCIH) identified many risk factors in
NICU infants like prolonged mechanical ventilation, asphyxia, low
birth weight and ototoxic medication, and so it also considers
intensive care as a whole a risk factor. The present book focuses
its attention on this hearing loss risk factor, starting from risk
factors and screening strategies, highlighting the various neonatal
levels of care, focusing on the treatment of infants with neural
tube defects and the future motor development of premature babies.
This should be done until caregivers can get the attention of drug
therapies used in the NICU.
