Interior design has undergone a quiet but profound revolution in the last decade, as home-owners have become more aware of international influences and more prepared to experiment, to break out of the prescribed moulds of style. Many different parts of the world - in particular India, China, and Japan - have evolved their own unique styles of modernism, much of it rooted in the traditional principles of their particular regions, and this has helped to liberate the way we now think about dwelling space, its organisation and furnishing. Drawing on a wide range of modern design from many countries, this unique, rich sourcebook takes an elemental approach to the design of a home. In an age when no interior design principle goes unchallenged and all ideas are possible, the only sensible approach is to start from the basic elements - how a home works and what we expect from it. The Source, illustrated with hundreds of colour photographs by Michael Freeman, one of the most widely travelled authors and photographers working in this area, is divided into four sections which each cover a basic function. The first, Connect, deals with the connectivity of a home, from entrances and corridors to staircases. The second, Divide, shows the many ways in which individual areas can be divided and linked, from walls to screens and unconventional dividers, as well as flexible partitions that draw on Japanese and Chinese principles. The third section, Space, is concerned with living spaces in all their variety, balancing the twin needs of comfort and inspiration. The last section, Utility, covers the basic functions of any dwelling, from cooking and bathing to working at home and storage. All of this is illustrated by a vast array of ideas and solutions from many of the world's best interior designers and architects. This new book offers a different and refreshing way of looking at the house and the elemental way of how we live today.

Interior Design Student's Comprehensive Exam is designed for students to take the mystery out of the NCIDQ qualifying exam for interior design professionals. The activities contained in this workbook are intended to create experiences similar to those of taking the exam. Hopefully, since career advancement does not lay in the balance for students working on these exercises the way it does for the professional taking the exam, they will be a fun challenge. These exercises are intended to be an introduction to some of the content, scope and pacing of the exam. The questions and design scenarios included in this workbook are not endorsed by NCIDQ, nor are they testing exercises for professionals preparing for the exam. They are student exercises which can imitate features of the exam to answer student questions about the exam experience.Features:-- Multiple choice questions cover topics similar to those found in the NCIDQ, including space planning, business considerations, codes, advanced design planning, documentation, and so on-- Multiple choice questions do not rely on the judgment that comes with working in the field but rather the information that the student has likely learned in the classroom-- Design scenarios enable students to read the program quickly and develop a design concept that meets all of the design requirements, allowing time to develop and complete the mandatory drawing-- Suggested scoring sheet for all scenarios full and "lite"-- Answer sheet for the multiple choice questions includes some reasoning behind the most correct answer if the instructor wants to use a review of the multiple choice section as an opportunity for a class discussion-- CD-ROM includes PDFs of all versions of design scenarios
Scholars tend to view the Damascus Document as a historical source, but a reading of the text in light of contemporary (audience-oriented) literary criticism finds its emphasis in the ideological construction of history and communal identity, rather than in the preservation of a historical record. An introduction to contemporary literary criticism is followed by a series of thematic readings, focusing on historical narrative, priestly imagery, and gender in the covenant community. Each theme is examined in terms of its potential for multiple (sometimes contradictory) interpretations and for its place in the larger sectarian discourse. This study offers an alternative approach to the historiography of ancient Jewish sectarianism, acknowledging the presence of competing claims to shared traditions and the potential for changes in textual interpretation over time or among diverse communities.
This book has been written from the conviction that general
statements about the philosophical position taken by Theophrastus
in this small but extremely difficult treatise, can only be made on
the basis of a detailed interpretation of each and every sentence
of the text. This resulted in a full commentary, which evades no
philological or philosophical question that should be asked in
order to elicit from the text a maximum of information. The outcome
is a cautious but nonetheless explicit and determinate
characterization and evaluation of Theophrastean metaphysics as a
biologist's metaphysics, which deserves the attention of
philosophers in its own right.

This book explores the unique merger of eastern design theories with western building methodology. More specifically, it examines Feng Shui principles in the Form School which was synthesized for the design of prototype of cancer treatment facility. For many centuries, Feng Shui has made a significant contribution in design in the eastern world. In western society, the primary premise during the design of built environment involves analysis and interpretation of measurable scientific data. This scientific approach has become a general norm for many designers. Although Feng Shui principles gained popularity in western countries in the last fifteen years, many professionals still view these principles to be lacking in a stable scientific foundation. This book challenges the notion of concept of Feng Shui being based on superstition with limited value in design practice. In addition, it illustrates the potential of combining these eastern philosophies with western principles. The study is generally catered to professionals in Design and Cultural fields who possess interest in Feng Shui theory.
Introduction: Rooms may be decorated in two ways: by a superficial application of ornament totally independent of structure, or by means of those architectural features which are part of the organism of every house, inside as well as out. In the middle ages, when warfare and brigandage shaped the conditions of life, and men camped in their castles much as they did in their tents, it was natural that decorations should be portable, and that the naked walls of the mediaeval chamber should be hung with arras, while a ceil, or ceiling, of cloth stretched across the open timbers of its roof....... This early works is a fascinating and comprehensive look at the subject and will appeal greatly to any one interested in Early House decor. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
This volume provides the first critical edition of Boethius' "De divisione," The importance of Boethius' treatise is twofold: it was widely read in the medieval schools, and it preserves the only known vestiges of Porphyry's commentary on Plato's "Sophist" and of Andronicus' treatise on diaeresis. The book is in four main sections: prolegomena in three parts, dealing with the date, source(s), and text of "De divisione"; critical text with apparatus and English translation; detailed philological and philosophical commentary; appendix, bibliography, and word index. This is the first edition of "De divisione" based on the earliest extant manuscripts, and the first complete commentary in any modern language. It will be of particular interest to students of later ancient and medieval philosophy and literature.
The formation methods of the architectural designs-especially facades-have been changed by the new materials and the technologies in construction since the Industrial revolution. The physical autonomy of the 'exterior skin' had been intensified by glass and metal. Besides the technological developments, facade has gained autonomy by the idea of representing the imagery or advertisement of the architectural design. Although the autonomy of facades has affected our entire physical environment, very little academic literature exists on this issue. This book, therefore, aims to examine how the formation of faades is separated from the architectural design by new technological developments and design intentions. This aim is accomplished by examining the faade formation of the high-rise office buildings in Levent-Maslak area in stanbul and examining the working principles and marketing attitudes of faade manufacturing firms. The analysis should help shed some light on the design process of facades, and should be useful to professionals in Architecture and Manufacturing fields of architectural elements or anyone else who are closely interested in the changes in our physical environment.
'It is in its pared-down luxury, however, that the house has its edge. All the panelling, architraves, doors, windows and skirtings were custom-made for the building; new floors were laid in rich brown or bleached oak boards, with limestone used for the hallway and bathrooms; at the flick of a Lutron switch, mood lighting changes the atmosphere of each room; and furniture and mirrors are scaled up to look just right in the large spaces, such as the oversized ottoman and sofa in the living room. Although the house is sparsely furnished, the pieces are of an enviably high quality.' The Times on John Minshaw's award-winning Wimpole Street home. As an Architectural & Interior Design Practice, John Minshaw Designs has been designing and building private residences for over 30 years. At the Design & Decoration Awards in 2005/6, he won both 'Designer of the Year' and 'Classical Residential Interior'. Minshaw says he came to interiors by default. But it is clear that his early training in fine art influences much of his work. "My style is to buy good antiques and design bespoke cabinetry, then put them into pared-down interiors," he says -- a design ethic that is a neat contrast to the cliched froufrou swags and tails often associated with interior design. This book covers ten projects, spanning twenty years, offering a summary of Minshaw's work.
Traditionally, practices of domestic sanctification in Thailand (i.e. rituals of housebuilding and domestic remedies) employed the house as a device to prevent ill fortune, to promote health and prosperity, and to repair breaches in the system of defence. Modernised Thais associate these traditional practices with an outlook, which is superstitious and irreconcilable with that of urban modernity. Nevertheless, Thais are struggling to overcome their fear and these practices now reappear in urban apartments and houses in Bangkok. The book aims to document and interpret this reappearance of the traditional practices of domestic sanctification in contemporary Thai home. The evidences show that the modernised Thais are reusing and reinventing some of the techniques of the traditional practices as a solution for their anxiety, while at the same time, the excessiveness of the practices has turned the familiar space of home into a profoundly ambivalent sphere.
The first edition of this major survey on interior design by John Pile won the 2001 ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Educational Foundation/Joel Polsky Prize. Now this standard history has been updated to reflect greater coverage of non-Western design, as well as vernacular and residential interiors. A deeper exploration of sustainable design and a CD-ROM with an interactive presentation of periods and styles makes this the most relevant text available. This work includes more than 500 photographs and drawings in color and black and white.
This study explored the physical and social characteristics that encourage gathering behavior in coffee shops. The study is primarily qualitative using the techniques of visual documentation, observation, behavioral mapping, interview, and survey research. The findings are presented in four categories including preferred physical attributes of the coffee shops, characteristics of the people who frequent the coffee shops, the activities that took place there, and the feelings and attitudes of the patrons. The most important physical characteristics include cleanliness, appealing aroma, adequate lighting, comfortable furniture, and a view to the outside. Regarding the people and their activities, feelings, and attitudes, findings showed people valued the opportunity to linger, interact with regular patrons and staff. Patrons enjoyed the social environment of the coffee shop, and the support that was afforded them by other patrons and staff. The coffee shop became a home away from home for many. Overall, a strong sense of place attachment existed for those who frequented the coffee shop.
