This is a new release of the original 1929 edition.
Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It is a technique of decorative or interior decoration. Most mosaics are made of small, flat, roughly square, pieces of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae; but mosaics, especially floor mosaics, may also be made of small rounded pieces of stone, and called "pebble mosaics." Mosaic Art: The mosaic and inlay decoration too were profusely used in the Mughal buildings. In the time of Akbar, the mosaics were made from small tesserae which were combined in Persian geometrical patterns. But in Jahangir's reign pietra-dura began to be utilized for inlay work. The earliest example of the use of pietra-dura inlay seems to have been made in celebrated Jag Mandir water-palace in the Pichola Lake at Udaipur and the Itmad-ud-daulah's tomb at Agra. In the time of Shah Jahan pietra-dura superseded the older mosaic ornamentation. Many of Shah Jahan's buildings in the forts of Delhi and Agra were decorated with pietra-dura inlay. Jahangir's tomb at Shandara, the Sheesh Mahal in Lahore and the Taj Mahal at Agra are fine examples of the beautiful ornamentation of the pietra-dura art.

Contains chapters on Roman furniture, the Renaissance Period and its variations throughout Europe, Asian furniture, and many more. Originally released in 1892.
Creating Space by Niki Schafer is a step-by-step guide to how to design a calm, sane, outrageously gorgeous home and family-life. Inspiring and practical in equal measures it takes you on a journey through the seven spaces of your home creating rooms that work on many levels - aesthetically (outrageously gorgeous), emotionally (calm) and psychologically (sane). This isn't just another pretty interior design book, Creating Space is a guide to understanding how you and your family think and feel. And the design tools taught are as much about family dynamics and the wellbeing of your family as they are about the practical side to creating a home. Niki Schafer is an interior designer, NLP coach and speaker who has lived in more than 100 homes - from New York to Nicaragua to Henley-on-Thames. She runs her own design practice, Dwell-Being, based on the principle of merging design with wellbeing.
Universal Design (UD) seeks to promote equality by increasing accessibility and usability within products, services and systems so as to include as many categories of end-users as possible. UD can potentially impact such diverse issues as health, transportation, inclusive education, sports and recreation, entertainment, social welfare, inclusive employment, transgenerational/lifespan housing, inclusive tourism, accessibility, safety, and ecological concerns on sustainability. UD is an emerging discipline in developing countries whose potential as a catalyst for positive social change is yet to be fully appreciated. This book thus offers a useful discussion on the various challenges and opportunities associated with efforts to mainstream UD in majority world contexts. By interrogating the efficacy of UD-thinking, key actors including policy makers, students, practitioners, researchers, and educators within the diverse sub-disciplines of architecture, design, disability studies, ergonomics/human factors engineering, human-computer interaction (HCI)/usability studies and urban planning can promote greater social equity and cohesion through their design interventions.
Choosing colors for your home is a challenge, even for professional designers. Like so many other details, selecting colors is one of those "I know what I like when I see it" kind of things. Rather than exhaust yourself staring at color wheels, palettes, and pictures to try to find colors that work for you, why not take a short cut? The greatest painters in the world are gifted with the ability to select colors to help convey a certain mood in their paintings. Because of this, the chapters of this book are organized by mood. From bright, high energy colors, to dark, low energy colors, and everywhere in between, this book has them. Simply flip through and dog ear the pages of the color schemes that jump out at you. You will find you gravitate toward high or low energy colors. Of the colors patterns you resonate with the most, you may find one particular color scheme from a famous painting you respond to the strongest. Use the color swatch from your chosen painting when selecting the color of materials for your home. Why can't the entire design process be this simple?

In parallel to the developments in computer technology and the broad use of computers in the design domain, computer media presentations are widely used today in architecture. Architectural presentation drawings are means of externalization the internal world, thoughts and identity of architects. However, the issue of the cognition of designer's identity in computer media presentations is rarely addressed in the researches as compared to studies on traditional media presentations. On the contrary, computers are mainly regarded as reflecting their own identity rather than providing designers potentials to express themselves and to achieve differences and variations. In this study, a comparative analysis of the cognition of designer's identity in architectural presentation drawings is carried out. The analysis provided enough evidence that similar to architectural presentation drawings of traditional media, computer media presentations hold potentials for the reflection of designer's identity.

Fractal forms found in nature have the potential to create a resonant aesthetic, which may also provide restorative effects from stress. This study tested 36 participants for physiological effect during stress and recovery while viewing four art images, a Pollock, a savannah, an abstract and a plain grey field. When compared to a grey field the Pollack image with a fractal dimension of 1.5 was shown to be restorative by physiological response as measured by blood volume amplitude during stress. When compared to a grey field the savannah with a fractal dimension of 1.4 though not statistically significant, yielded a trend toward restoration. No statistical differences were found between the savannah and Pollock images; supporting the hypothesis that the underlying fractal form, not just nature, provides for a restorative effect. Fractal forms provide designers a tool for creating spaces which can conform to aesthetic and cultural preference.

1928. With 200 Illustrations. From the Foreword: By the practical method here adopted of illustrating and treating the furniture of each style by itself and in proper chronological order it becomes easy to distinguish the characteristics of each furniture-group, and so quickly to place, by the recognition of those qualities, any piece of furniture that one sees. These consecutive styles soon lie out in the mind like a map, upon any location in which a mental finger can unhesitatingly be set down. Transition pieces then cause no difficulty, for the characteristics of two styles in the one piece are recognized, and the article is assigned to its natural place between the two modes. To a degree that did not obtain in England, there was sometimes here the persistence of certain features of one style into the next, and this makes it all the more necessary to understand which features belong to each. Contents: The Colonial Styles: Jacobean or Stuart; William and Mary; Queen Anne-Early Georgian; Chippendale. The Federal Styles: Hepplewhite, Shearer, and Early Sheraton; American Directoire; American Empire. Decoration: Interior Architecture; Decorative Accessories. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded.

The design of a modular, multifunctional room divider is the focus of this research. Designed with Computer-Aided Technology and Computer-Aided Manufacturing processes in mind, the modular unit started as a simple cube for its purity and perfectly geometric qualities (same width, height and depth) and was later developed into more complex objects after careful consideration and various design iterations. These tests regarding shape and size of the unit were made in order to come up with its final design, starting at units that were based on straight lines and angles to curved, almost organic units. A third phase started when the possibility of color was put into discussion and along with it, one could understand the different reactions color can bring when experiencing an object. As a final material for the project, plastic was chosen due to its extreme versatility when it refers to the colors, texture and production process. |
