Ethan Allen and HGTV may have plenty to say about making a home look right, but what makes a home feel right? In House Thinking, journalist and cultural critic Winifred Gallagher takes the reader on a psychological tour of the American home. By drawing on the latest research in behavioral science, an overview of cultural history, and interviews with leading architects and designers, she shows us not only how our homes reflect who we are but also how they influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions. How does your entryway prime you for experiencing your home? What makes a bedroom a sensual oasis? How can your bathroom exacerbate your worst fears? House Thinking addresses provocative questions like these, enabling us to understand the homes we've made for ourselves in a unique and powerful new way. It is an eye-opening look at how we live . . . and how we could live.
Design consists of the solution proposals put forward by the designer for the target audience. The changing needs of the target audience cause the designer to change the solutions. Although the act of designing seems to take place in the triangle of mass-object-designer, it is also affected by the period it is in, independently of these components. The changing perception of taste with the change of the period, the adoption of fast consumption, the advancement of technology, the attempt to establish the real world in the virtual with this progress, and the widespread use of social media causes different effects on different user groups. Some users, who feel this effect, adapt to it and try to meet their needs in parallel, while the other part shows a conscious resistance to this effect and prefers to maintain a perception of "liking" from the past. It is important to share these views to break the resistance and ensure the construction of a new agenda. Contemporary Manifests on Design Thinking and Practice reveals the current problems, practices, and research of the period in design disciplines. It gives readers the opportunity to see the impact of the ever-present change and transformation in design as a whole. Covering topics such as alternative design models, social media interaction, and urban social sustainability, this premier reference source is a dynamic resource for designers, architects, industrial designers, business leaders and executives, students and faculty of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

The UK's housing stock has proved to be remarkably durable, as houses from the 18th and 19th centuries are still adaptable to the requirements of modern living. However, the need to respect the environment and to reduce energy costs presents a new set of challenges for the owners of period properties. In Renovations, Richard Wilcock analyses a host of cutting-edge projects to examine the challenges of adapting traditional house types; retaining historic features whilst introducing modern interventions. The book brings together more than two decades of research to showcase the best examples of domestic extensions and internal remodelling in the UK today. The carefully selected exemplar projects highlight advances in technology, including new glazing methods, improvements in flat roof construction and structural innovations in steel and lightweight timber that have revolutionised the nature of the small house extension and increased the palette of forms and materials available to the architect. Containing beautiful colour illustrations throughout, and pointing readers to more detailed technical sources of information, Renovations will provide inspiration for architects, designers and home owners alike.

Studio environments can be defined as multi-dimensional integrated production spaces where basic design trainings take place and where design issues including theoretical notions such as sociological, political, phenomenological, and other dimensions are discussed. Present approaches within the literature and social media on this topic gives cause for students to evaluate their future professions over finished and pictorial products rather than ontological and processual means. While there are many resources available on the present approaches of aesthetics and visuality of interior spaces, there is not much research available on new design methodologies, related design processes, and new applied methods in interior arcitecture. Based on different contexts, these methods of design practice have the potential to enrich design processes and create multiple discussion platforms within project studios as well as other design media. These different representations and narration methods for research in the context of interior architecture can be effectively used in design processes. The Handbook of Research on Methodologies for Design and Production Practices in Interior Architecture proposes new design methodologies and related design processes and introduces new applied method approaches while presenting alternative methods that have been used within design studios in the field of interior architecture. The chapters deal with four major sections: the design process and interdiciplinary approaches; then scenario development and content; followed by material, texture, and atmosphere; and concluding with new approaches to design. While highlighting topics such as spatial perception, design strategies, architectural atmosphere, and design-thinking, this book is of interest to architects, interior designers, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students looking for advanced research on the new design metholodologies and processes for interior architecture.

Where would we be without the traditional London caff? Milk bars, ice-cream parlours and espresso bars are all a feature of the London landscape that were borne out of the 1940s to 1960s. It is a time when floods of immigrants set up their businesses providing frothy coffee to the city's workers. Today, many of these establishments still function as caffs and have their original elaborate and shiny machines that continue to dispense no end of steam and cups of tea, and still feature vinyl and tiled floors and walls. This book provides an affectionate look at one of London's endangered species', featuring 28 caffs throughout the capital. Each example is accompanied by anecdotal captions which evoke the atmosphere and context of each place, as well as addresses and nearest tube stations, so that anyone wanting a fix of old-style London can go and find it.
