Design for a Complex World - Challenges in Practice and Education (Paperback): Graham Cairns Design for a Complex World - Challenges in Practice and Education (Paperback)
Graham Cairns
R952 R866 Discovery Miles 8 660 Save R86 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a book conceived in the ever widening realm of design practice and education. It is premised on the belief that the forces of globalisation that have affected design practice for decades have, in recent years, manifest themselves in design education as well. Consequently, it brings authors, practitioners and educators together from ten countries across six continents. They each offer an overview of the socio-cultural and economic factors that affect the built environment in their particular region of the world. They discuss how the practices of architecture, interior design, planning and landscape architecture interact with those forces but, equally as importantly, they discuss how design education does the same. This book then, is written by and for practitioners, educators and students of the built environment whose critical eye is prepared to scan the globe for lessons that are both universally, but also specifically applicable to their own geographical and discipline context. It is more specifically geared to those who see the built environment through a socio-political prism - as a phenomenon shaped by this broader none design context - but also as a model through which we can better understand that external context.

Hannah Jenkins
R763 Discovery Miles 7 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A combination of difficult economic times, a premium on urban space, and the modern trend for living alone means that living in small spaces has become a necessity, as much as a choice. But that needn't mean living in cramped, unimaginative spaces. Living Little shows how the challenges of small floor plans and compact interiors can be transformed with clever and creative design, the innovative use of technology, and ingenious and stylish solutions. Be they small or tiny homes, flats, apartments or storefront properties, cottages, shipping-container dwellings, caravans, or cabins, this book is the perfect source of inspiration for those short on space who are yearning for a strong dose of ingenuity and style.

Exteriorless Architecture - Form, Space and Urbanities of Neoliberalism (Hardcover): Stefano Corbo Exteriorless Architecture - Form, Space and Urbanities of Neoliberalism (Hardcover)
Stefano Corbo
R4,156 Discovery Miles 41 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The architectures of capitalist development's present phase manifest themselves through a very diverse range of episodes: data centers, warehouses, container terminals, logistics parks. Generally considered as mediocre and banal examples that sit outside of pre-established disciplinary canons, these artifacts are extremely relevant. They are relevant not for their formal or historic qualities, but for what they represent - for the implicit system of values they embed. They express specific power relations, exacerbate issues of labor, and generate processes of subjectivity. Most importantly, these architectures, despite their formal and typological diversity, share a common ground. They depict a sort of inner and extended paradigm: the EXTERIORLESS. How can an architecture of the EXTERIORLESS be defined? How does it differentiate from examples and manifestations of the past? How do notions of legibility, form vs. function, typological articulation, come into play? In situating the architectures of contemporary capitalism within the larger debate on Anthropocene, Post- Anthropocene and Capitalocene, this book attempts to answer those questions by delineating three main characteristics for an architecture of the EXTERIORLESS: its physical and symbolic role as interface; its ambiguous condition of being at the same time local and global, isolated and connected, compressed and expanded; and, lastly, its contribution to new forms of urbanity in absence of the traditional city. These three aspects-Interface, Expanded Domains, and New Forms of Urbanity-constitute the three main sections of the book. Each section includes two chapters and examines one specific aspect of the EXTERIORLESS paradigm. Defining its three main characteristics, this book covers a wide spectrum of themes and examples. It describes the influence that the experimental architecture of the 1960s has exerted on late-capitalist spatial products; it analyzes the impact of logistics on the redesign of the territory; it introduces new forms of global urbanity generated by the EXTERIORLESS. Written for students and scholars of architectural history, theory and criticism, Stefano Corbo contextualizes the concept of EXTERIORLESS and its role in contemporary architecture, its obedience to macro-economic dynamics, and its possible future.

Designing the French Interior - The Modern Home and Mass Media (Hardcover): Anca I. Lasc, Georgina Downey, Mark Taylor Designing the French Interior - The Modern Home and Mass Media (Hardcover)
Anca I. Lasc, Georgina Downey, Mark Taylor
R4,245 Discovery Miles 42 450 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Designing the French Interior traces France's central role in the development of the modern domestic interior, from the pre-revolutionary period to the 1970s, and addresses the importance of various media, including drawings, prints, pattern books, illustrated magazines, department store catalogs, photographs, guidebooks, and films, in representing and promoting French interior design to a wider audience. Contributors to this original volume identify and historicize the singularity of the modern French domestic interior as a generator of reproducible images, a site for display of both highly crafted and mass-produced objects, and the direct result of widely-circulated imagery in its own right. This important volume enables an invaluable new understanding of the relationship between architecture, interior spaces, material cultures, mass media and modernity.

Homes for Families - Stylish living for kids and parents (Hardcover): ,Joni Vandewalle Homes for Families - Stylish living for kids and parents (Hardcover)
,Joni Vandewalle
R669 Discovery Miles 6 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Many people assume that becoming a parent means sacrificing a stylish interior, but these creatively designed homes show that it doesn't have to be that way. When lifestyle journalist Joni Vandewalle's daughter was born she was disappointed to discover that in most home styling magazines children's rooms and play areas are expertly concealed. In this book she profiles the homes of 25 young families, where toys brighten up the interior, kids are a source of energy and joy, and parents don't think twice about sacrificing living space to give their kids cleverly styled bedrooms, colourful play areas and creative storage. The result? More than 200 pages of interior design tips on how to create a stylish, warm and happy family home for young parents and parents-to-be. Bachelors of a Different Sort - Queer Aesthetics, Material Culture and the Modern Interior in Britain (Paperback): John Potvin Bachelors of a Different Sort - Queer Aesthetics, Material Culture and the Modern Interior in Britain (Paperback)
John Potvin
R815 Discovery Miles 8 150 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The bachelor has long held an ambivalent, uncomfortable and even at times unfriendly position in society. This book carefully considers the complicated relationships between the modern queer bachelor and interior design, material culture and aesthetics in Britain between 1885 and 1957. The seven deadly sins of the modern bachelor (queerness, idolatry, askesis, decadence, the decorative, glamour and artifice) comprise a contested site and reveal in their respective ways the distinctly queer twinning of shame and resistance. It pays close attention to the interiors of Lord Ronald Gower, Alfred Taylor, Oscar Wilde, Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts, Edward Perry Warren and John Marshall, Sir Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, Noel Coward and Cecil Beaton. Richly illustrated and written in a lively and accessible manner, Bachelors of a different sort is at once theoretically ambitious and rich in its use of archival and various historical sources. -- .

The Production Sites of Architecture (Hardcover): Sophia Psarra The Production Sites of Architecture (Hardcover)
Sophia Psarra
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Production Sites of Architecture examines the intimate link between material sites and meaning. It explores questions such as: how do spatial configurations produce meaning? What are alternative modes of knowledge production? How do these change our understanding of architectural knowledge? Featuring essays from an international range of scholars, the book accepts that everything about the production of architecture has social significance. It focuses on two areas: firstly, relationships of spatial configuration, form, order and classification; secondly, the interaction of architecture and these notions with other areas of knowledge, such as literature, inscriptions, interpretations, and theories of classification, ordering and invention. Moving beyond perspectives which divide architecture into either an aesthetic or practical art, the authors show how buildings are informed by intersections between site and content, space and idea, thought and materiality, architecture and imagination. Presenting illustrated case studies of works by architects and artists including Amale Andraos, Dan Wood, OMA, Koen Deprez and John Soane, The Production Sites of Architecture makes a major contribution to our understanding of architectural theory.

Douglas Burrage Snelling (1916-85) was one of Britain's significant emigre architects and designers. Born in Kent and educated in New Zealand, he became one of Australia's leading mid-century architects, of luxury residences and commercial buildings, and a trend-setting designer of furniture, interiors and landscapes. This is the first comprehensive study of Snelling's pan-Pacific life, works and trans-disciplinary significance. It provides a critical examination of this controversial modernist, revealing him to be a colourful and talented protagonist who led antipodean interpretations of American, especially Wrightian and southern Californian, architecture, design and lifestyle innovations.

This book showcases twenty different small hotels, all located in the US, designed by architects who use light and materials in interesting and intentional ways. The designs also deliberately connect to their local history, context, or land - in many cases all three. Both the architecture and the operations harmonize with the place, whether that is a bustling city, small town, or natural area. Many are new buildings but some are adaptive reuse projects or renovations of historic properties, extending the connectivity of the place into the future. A condensed history of lodging helps to place the many typologies and histories of hospitality in relationship to world events and includes the many factors that influence hotel development such as business practices, technology, and even politics. Hotels are influenced by larger trends and innovations in hospitality such as the emergence of a variety of creative possibilities for future travel. A final chapter includes speculation on travel trends and encourages us all to wander more intentionally.

Biography, Identity and the Modern Interior (Paperback): Penny Sparke Biography, Identity and the Modern Interior (Paperback)
Penny Sparke
R1,580 Discovery Miles 15 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Through a series of case studies from the mid-eighteenth century to the start of the twenty-first, this collection of essays considers the historical insights that ethno/auto/biographical investigations into the lives of individuals, groups and interiors can offer design and architectural historians. Established scholars and emerging researchers shed light on the methodological issues that arise from the use of these sources to explore the history of the interior as a site in which everyday life is experienced and performed, and the ways in which contemporary architects and interior designers draw on personal and collective histories in their practice. Historians and theorists working within a range of disciplinary contexts and historiographical traditions are turning to biography as means of exploring and accounting for social, cultural and material change - and this volume reflects that turn, representing the fields of architectural and design history, social history, literary history, creative writing and design practice. Topics include masters and servants in eighteenth-century English kitchens; the lost interiors of Oscar Wilde's 'House Beautiful'; Elsa Schiaparelli's Surrealist spaces; Jean Genet, outlaws, and the interiors of marginality; and architect Lina Bo Bardi's 'Glass House', Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Coding, Shaping, Making - Experiments in Form and Form-Making (Hardcover): Haresh Lalvani Coding, Shaping, Making - Experiments in Form and Form-Making (Hardcover)
Haresh Lalvani
R4,057 Discovery Miles 40 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Coding, Shaping, Making combines inspiration from architecture, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and computation to look towards the future of architecture, design and art. It presents ongoing experiments in the search for fundamental principles of form and form-making in nature so that we can better inform our own built environment. In the coming decades, matter will become encoded with shape information so that it shapes itself, as happens in biology. Physical objects, shaped by forces as well, will begin to design themselves based on information encoded in matter they are made of. This knowledge will be scaled and trickled up to architecture. Consequently, architecture will begin to design itself and the role of the architect will need redefining. This heavily illustrated book highlights Haresh Lalvani's efforts towards this speculative future through experiments in form and form-making, including his work in developing a new approach to shape-coding, exploring higher-dimensional geometry for designing physical structures and organizing form in higher-dimensional diagrams. Taking an in-depth look at Lalvani's pioneering experiments of mass customization in industrial products in architecture, combined with his idea of a form continuum, this book argues for the need for integration of coding, shaping and making in future technologies into one seamless process. Drawing together decades of research, this book will be a thought-provoking read for architecture professionals and students, especially those interested in the future of the discipline as it relates to mathematics, science, technology and art. It will also interest those in the latter fields for its broader implications.
