Architecture is a Verb (Hardcover): Sarah Robinson Architecture is a Verb (Hardcover)
Sarah Robinson
R4,214 Discovery Miles 42 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Architecture is a Verb outlines an approach that shifts the fundamental premises of architectural design and practice in several important ways. First, it acknowledges the centrality of the human organism as an active participant interdependent in its environment. Second, it understands human action in terms of radical embodiment-grounding the range of human activities traditionally attributed to mind and cognition: imagining, thinking, remembering-in the body. Third, it asks what a building does-that is, extends the performative functional interpretation of design to interrogate how buildings move and in turn move us, how they shape thought and action. Finally, it is committed to articulating concrete situations by developing a taxonomy of human/building interactions. Written in engaging prose for students of architecture, interiors and urban design, as well as practicing professionals, Sarah Robinson offers richly illustrated practical examples for a new generation of designers.

The Art of Experiment - Post-pandemic Knowledge Practices for 21st Century Architecture and Design (Paperback): Rolf Hughes,... The Art of Experiment - Post-pandemic Knowledge Practices for 21st Century Architecture and Design (Paperback)
Rolf Hughes, Rachel Armstrong
R1,175 Discovery Miles 11 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A handbook for navigating our troubled and precarious times intended to help readers imagine and make their world anew. In search of new knowledge practices that can help us make the world livable again, this book takes the reader on a journey across time-from the deep past to the unfolding future. The authors search beyond human knowledge to establish negotiated partnerships with forms of knowledge within the planet itself, examining how we have manipulated these historically through an anthropocentric focus. The book explores the many different kinds of knowledge, and the diversity of instruments needed to invoke and actuate the potency of human and nonhuman agencies. Four key phases in our ways of knowing are identified: material, strengthening, reconfiguring and extending, which are exemplified through case studies that take the form of worlding experiments. This pioneering work will inspire architects, artists and designers as well as students, teachers and researchers across arts and design disciplines.

Research Methods for Interior Design - Applying Interiority (Hardcover): Dana E. Vaux, David Wang Research Methods for Interior Design - Applying Interiority (Hardcover)
Dana E. Vaux, David Wang
R4,231 Discovery Miles 42 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interior design has shifted significantly in the past fifty years from a focus on home decoration within family and consumer sciences to a focus on the impact of health and safety within the interior environment. This shift has called for a deeper focus in evidence-based research for interior design education and practice. Research Methods for Interior Design provides a broad range of qualitative and quantitative examples, each highlighted as a case of interior design research. Each chapter is supplemented with an in-depth introduction, additional questions, suggested exercises, and additional research references. The book's subtitle, Applying Interiority, identifies one reason why the field of interior design is expanding, namely, all people wish to achieve a subjective sense of well-being within built environments, even when those environments are not defined by walls. The chapters of this book exemplify different ways to comprehend interiority through clearly defined research methodologies. This book is a significant resource for interior design students, educators, and researchers in providing them with an expanded vision of what interior design research can encompass.

Parametric Estimates by the Monte Carlo Method (Hardcover, Reprint 2018): G.A. Mikhailov Parametric Estimates by the Monte Carlo Method (Hardcover, Reprint 2018)
G.A. Mikhailov
R5,680 Discovery Miles 56 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph is devoted to the further development of parametric weight Monte Carlo estimates for solving linear and nonlinear integral equations, radiation transfer equations, and boundary value problems, including problems with random parameters. The use of these estimates leads to the construction of new, effective Monte Carlo methods for calculating parametric multiple derivatives of solutions and for the main eigenvalues. The book opens with an introduction on the theory of weight Monte Carlo methods. The following chapters contain new material on solving boundary value problems with complex parameters, mixed problems to parabolic equations, boundary value problems of the second and third kind, and some improved techniques related to vector and nonlinear Helmholtz equations. Special attention is given to the foundation and optimization of the global 'walk on grid' method for solving the Helmholtz difference equation. Additionally, new Monte Carlo methods for solving stochastic radiation transfer problems are presented, including the estimation of probabilistic moments of corresponding critical parameters.

Stories from Home - English Domestic Interiors, 1750-1850 (Hardcover, New edition): Margaret Ponsonby Stories from Home - English Domestic Interiors, 1750-1850 (Hardcover, New edition)
Margaret Ponsonby
R4,357 Discovery Miles 43 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most homes in the past were not elite, wealthy interiors complete with high fashion furnishings, designed by well-known architects and designers, as many domestic histories often seem to have assumed. As this book makes clear, there were in fact an enormous variety of house interiors in England during the period 1750-1850, reflecting the location, status and gender of particular householders, as well as their changing attitudes, tastes and aspirations. By focusing on non-metropolitan homes, which represented the majority of households in England, this study highlights the need for historians to look beyond prevailing attitudes that often reduce interiors to generic descriptions based on high fashions of the decorative arts. Instead it shows how numerous social and cultural influences affected the manner in which homes were furnished and decorated. Issues such as the availability of goods, gender, regional taste, income, the second-hand market, changing notions of privacy and household hierarchies and print culture, could all have a significant impact on domestic furnishing. The study ends with a discussion of how domestic interiors of historic properties have been presented and displayed in modern times, highlighting how competing notions of the past can cloud as well as illuminate the issue. Combining cultural history and qualitative analysis of evidence, this book presents a new way of looking at 'ordinary' and 'provincial' homes that enriches our understanding of English domestic life of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Singular Integral Equations and Discrete Vortices (Hardcover, Reprint 2018): I.K. Lifanov Singular Integral Equations and Discrete Vortices (Hardcover, Reprint 2018)
I.K. Lifanov
R10,079 Discovery Miles 100 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph is divided into five parts and opens with elements of the theory of singular integral equation solutions in the class of absolutely integrable and non-integrable functions. The second part deals with elements of potential theory for the Helmholtz equation, especially with the reduction of Dirichlet and Neumann problems for Laplace and Helmholtz equations to singular integral equations. Part three contains methods of calculation for different one-dimensional and two-dimensional singular integrals. In this part, quadrature formulas of discrete vortex pair type in the plane case and closed vortex frame type in the spatial case for singular integrals are described for the first time. These quadrature formulas are applied to numerical solutions of singular integral equations of the 1st and 2nd kind with constant and variable coefficients, in part four of the book. Finally, discrete mathematical models of some problems in aerodynamics, electrodynamics and elasticity theory are given.

Ceilings and Dreams - The Architecture of Levity (Hardcover): Paul Emmons, Federica Goffi, Jodi La Coe Ceilings and Dreams - The Architecture of Levity (Hardcover)
Paul Emmons, Federica Goffi, Jodi La Coe
R4,221 Discovery Miles 42 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Where is the space for dreaming in the twenty-first century? Lofty thoughts, like dreams, are born and live overhead, just as they have been represented in Renaissance paintings and modern cartoons. Ceilings are often repositories of stories, events and otherwise invisible oneiric narratives. Yet environments that inspire innovative thinking are dwindling as our world confronts enormous challenges, and almost all of our thinking, debating and decision-making takes place under endless ceiling grids. Quantitative research establishes that spaces with taller ceilings elicit broader, more creative thoughts. Today, ceilings are usually squat conduits of technology: they have become the blind spot of modern architecture. The twenty essays in this book look across cultures, places and ceilings over time to discover their potential to uplift the human spirit. Not just one building element among many, the ceiling is a key to unlock the architectural imagination. Ceilings and Dreams aims to correct this blind spot and encourages architects and designers, researchers and students, to look up through writings organized into three expansive categories: reveries, suspensions and inversions. The contributors contemplate the architecture of levity and the potential of the ceiling, once again, as a place for dreaming.

Domestic Interiors - Representing Homes from the Victorians to the Moderns (Hardcover): Georgina Downey Domestic Interiors - Representing Homes from the Victorians to the Moderns (Hardcover)
Georgina Downey
R4,313 Discovery Miles 43 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the act of enclosing space and making rooms, we make and define our aspirations and identities. Taking a room by room approach, this fascinating volume explores how representations of domestic space have embodied changing spatial configurations and values, and considers how we see modern individuals in the process of making themselves 'at home'. Scholars from the US, UK and Australasia re-visit and re-think interiors by Bonnard, Matisse, Degas and Vuillard, as well as the great spaces of early modernity; the drawing room in Rossetti's house, hallways in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the Paris attic of the Brothers Goncourt; Schutte-Lihotzky's Frankfurt Kitchen, to explore how interior making has changed from the Victorian to the modern period. From the smallest room - the bathroom - to the spacious verandas of Singapore Deco, Domestic Interiors focuses on modern rooms 'imaged' and imagined, it builds a distinct body of knowledge around the interior, interiority, representation and modernity, and creates a rich resource for students and scholars in art, architecture and design history.

Technique and Sensibility in the Fiction and Poetry of Raymond Carver (Hardcover): Arthur F. Bethea Technique and Sensibility in the Fiction and Poetry of Raymond Carver (Hardcover)
Arthur F. Bethea
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Emphasizing important techniques and themes, with due consideration of germane theoretical perspectives and relevant biographical materials, this study offers the most comprehensive, sophisticated examination of Raymond Carver's fiction and poetry to date. Key arguments include:
* a de-emphasis of indeterminacy in Carver's fiction
* a detailed unfolding of his brilliant technique, especially his use of unreliable narration, symbolism, and omission
* a rejection of the notion of Carver as catatonic realist, a reductive view ignoring the poignancy of his fiction
* a consideration of Carver's authorial control of his characters
Most importantly, this study provides the first readily available, detailed, thoughtful analysis of Carver's poetry, arguing for an inclusion of Carver into the canon of postmodern American poets.
Written in straightforward, clear prose, the in-depth readings will help undergraduates immeasurably, while connections of Carver's work to that of other modern and contemporary writers, to carver scholarship, and theories of minimalism, postmodernism, and realism, will interest and assist more advanced readers.
