New Environments for Working (Hardcover): Francis Duffy, Denice Jaunzens, Andrew Laing, Stephen Willis New Environments for Working (Hardcover)
Francis Duffy, Denice Jaunzens, Andrew Laing, Stephen Willis
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The workplace is changing radically, yet the building designs and environmental systems for conventional offices fail to support the more fluid use of space and time practised by these new kinds of office work. Prepared by the team who wrote The Responsible Workplace in 1992, this book is based on a major research project undertaken by DEGW and the BRE. It identifies the key organizational changes, patterns of work, work settings and types of space layouts and it will help specifiers and users of environmental systems understand what products will be suitable for innovative ways of office working.

Douglas Snelling - Pan-Pacific Modern Design and Architecture (Hardcover): Davina Jackson Douglas Snelling - Pan-Pacific Modern Design and Architecture (Hardcover)
Davina Jackson
R4,647 Discovery Miles 46 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Douglas Burrage Snelling (1916-85) was one of Britain's significant emigre architects and designers. Born in Kent and educated in New Zealand, he became one of Australia's leading mid-century architects, of luxury residences and commercial buildings, and a trend-setting designer of furniture, interiors and landscapes. This is the first comprehensive study of Snelling's pan-Pacific life, works and trans-disciplinary significance. It provides a critical examination of this controversial modernist, revealing him to be a colourful and talented protagonist who led antipodean interpretations of American, especially Wrightian and southern Californian, architecture, design and lifestyle innovations.

Georgian Gothic - Medievalist Architecture, Furniture and Interiors, 1730-1840 (Hardcover): Peter Lindfield Georgian Gothic - Medievalist Architecture, Furniture and Interiors, 1730-1840 (Hardcover)
Peter Lindfield
R3,320 Discovery Miles 33 200 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

First full-length study of the impact of the Gothic Revival across the arts, from literature and architectural theory to houses, furniture and interiors. The Gothic Revival, rich, ambitious, occasionally eccentric, but nonetheless visually exciting, is one of Britain's greatest contributions to early modern design history, not least because for the most part it contravened approvedtaste: Classicism. Scholars have tended to treat Georgian Gothic as an homogenous and immature precursor to "high" Victorian Gothic, and centred their discussion around Walpole's Strawberry Hill. This book, conversely, reveals how the style was imaginatively and repeatedly revised and incorporated into prevailing eighteenth-century fashions: Palladianism, Rococo, Neoclassicism, and antiquarianism. It shows how under the control of architects, from Wren toPugin, Walpole and Cottingham, and furniture designs, especially those of Chippendale, and Ince and Mayhew, a shared language of Gothic motifs was applied to British architecture, furniture and interiors. Georgian Britain was awash with Gothic forms, even if the arbiters of taste criticised it vehemently. Throughout, the volume reframes the Gothic Revival's expression by connecting it with Georgian understandings of the medieval past, and consequently revises our interpretation of one of the most influential, yet lampooned, forms of material culture at the time. Peter N. Lindfield is a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow at the University of Stirling.

Visualizing the Nineteenth-Century Home - Modern Art and the Decorative Impulse (Hardcover, New Ed): Anca I. Lasc Visualizing the Nineteenth-Century Home - Modern Art and the Decorative Impulse (Hardcover, New Ed)
Anca I. Lasc
R4,774 Discovery Miles 47 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The nineteenth century - the Era of the Interior - witnessed the steady displacement of art from the ceilings, walls, and floors of aristocratic and religious interiors to the everyday spaces of bourgeois households, subject to their own enhanced ornamentation. Following the 1863 Salon des refuses, the French State began to channel mediocre painters into the decorative arts. England, too, launched an extensive reform of the decorative arts, resulting in more and more artists engaged in the production and design of complete interiors. America soon followed. Present art historical scholarship - still indebted to a modernist discourse that sees cultural progress to be synonymous with the removal of ornament from both utilitarian objects and architectural spaces - has not yet acknowledged the importance of the decorative arts in the myriad interior spaces of the 1800s. Nor has mainstream art history reckoned with the importance of the interior in nineteenth-century life and thought. Aimed at an interdisciplinary audience, including art and design historians, historians of the modern interior, interior designers, visual culture theorists, and scholars of nineteenth-century material culture, this collection of essays studies the modern interior in new ways. The volume addresses the double nature of the modern interior as both space and image, blurring the boundaries between arts and crafts, decoration and high art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, trompe-l'oeil effects and spatial practices. In so doing, it redefines the modern interior and its objects as essential components of modern art.

Lighting (Hardcover, 6th edition): D.C. Pritchard Lighting (Hardcover, 6th edition)
D.C. Pritchard
R4,080 Discovery Miles 40 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lighting, now in its sixth edition, is the standard text on the principles and practice of lighting interiors and exteriors. The book introduces all the main principles of light and colour, along with the design of general lighting schemes. It complies with the CIBSE lighting code and guides, covers the main calculations that a lighting designer needs to do and includes worked examples. The book starts with the theory of light and how it is perceived by the eye. It looks at the units used and the subjective effect of colour. The characteristics of various types of lamp are described along with luminaires (the equipment that contains the lamps). The effects of daylight on light levels indoors are described before going on to look at the design of general lighting schemes. Uniqueness Problems for Degenerating Equations and Nonclassical Problems (Hardcover, Reprint 2014): S.P. Shishatskii, A.... Uniqueness Problems for Degenerating Equations and Nonclassical Problems (Hardcover, Reprint 2014)
S.P. Shishatskii, A. Asanov, E.R. Atamanov
R5,386 Discovery Miles 53 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The study of Cauchy problems for degenerating equations and systems is a wide and actively developing area. However, the majority deals mainly with Cauchy problems for hyperbolic equations and systems and characteristic Cauchy problems for parabolic equations and systems.
This volume in the "Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems Series presents the results that were obtained on uniqueness for the main (ill-posed in the regular case) Cauchy problems for equations of the second order with exponential degeneracy. The Cauchy problem for a degenerating elliptic equation, the noncharacteristic Cauchy problem, and the mixed problem with reversed time for a degenerating parabolic equation are considered. Stability estimates that guarantee conditional well-posedness of the considered Cauchy problems in terms of the inverse problems theory are given, along with uniqueness theorems.

The Indoor Environment Handbook - How to Make Buildings Healthy and Comfortable (Paperback): Philomena Bluyssen The Indoor Environment Handbook - How to Make Buildings Healthy and Comfortable (Paperback)
Philomena Bluyssen
R1,563 Discovery Miles 15 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Winner of the Choice Outstanding Academic Titles of 2010 award. Ensuring that buildings are healthy and comfortable for their occupants is a primary concern of all architects and building engineers. This highly practical handbook will help make that process more efficient and effective. It begins with a guide to how the human body and senses react to different indoor environmental conditions, together with basic information on the parameters of the indoor environment and problems that can occur. It then moves on to give a background to the development of the study and control of the indoor environment, examining the main considerations (including thermal, lighting, indoor air and sound-related aspects) for a healthy and comfortable indoor environment and discussing the drivers for change in the field. Hannah Jenkins
R723 Discovery Miles 7 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A combination of difficult economic times, a premium on urban space, and the modern trend for living alone means that living in small spaces has become a necessity, as much as a choice. But that needn't mean living in cramped, unimaginative spaces. Living Little shows how the challenges of small floor plans and compact interiors can be transformed with clever and creative design, the innovative use of technology, and ingenious and stylish solutions. Be they small or tiny homes, flats, apartments or storefront properties, cottages, shipping-container dwellings, caravans, or cabins, this book is the perfect source of inspiration for those short on space who are yearning for a strong dose of ingenuity and style.

Language of Space (Hardcover): Bryan Lawson Language of Space (Hardcover)
Bryan Lawson
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This unique guide provides a systematic overview of the idea of architectural space. Bryan Lawson provides an ideal introduction to the topic, breaking down the complex and abstract terms used by many design theoreticians when writing about architectural space. Instead, our everyday knowledge is reintroduced to the language of design. Design values of 'space' are challenged and informed to stimulate a new theoretical and practical approach to design. This book views architectural and urban spaces as psychological, social and partly cultural phenomena. They accommodate, separate, structure, facilitate, heighten and even celebrate human spatial behaviour.

R4,806 Discovery Miles 48 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cities are not only places that house buildings; they are also spaces where cultural and social relations are built and developed. These properties must be taken into consideration when constructing and renovating new housing. Different methodologies can be used in order to create new flexible solutions for mass housing units' interior spaces with the aim of improving their adaptability by using a user-centered approach. Re-Coding Homes Through Flexible Interiors: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an optimal resource that investigates how interior design models can transform existing spaces into more flexible and functional housing units while also increasing the functional value and spatial quality of living spaces in social housing. The book specifically discusses how genetic algorithms, a generative design approach, are used to solve nonlinear design problems. It also provides results that can be referenced based on actual domain data, which can be used as references to other architectural and interior design approaches. Featuring research on topics such as housing design and mass housing, this book is ideally designed for architects, engineers, interior designers, furniture designers, construction companies, architecture firms, practitioners, academicians, students, and researchers.

Lighting Design - A Perception-Based Approach (Hardcover): Christopher Cuttle Lighting Design - A Perception-Based Approach (Hardcover)
Christopher Cuttle
R5,193 Discovery Miles 51 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

By reading this book, you will develop the skills to perceive a space and its contents "in light," and be able to devise a layout of luminaires that will provide that lit appearance.

Written by renowned lighting expert Christopher (Kit) Cuttle, the book:

  • explains the difference between vision and perception, which is the distinction between providing lighting to make things visible, and providing it to influence the appearance of everything that is visible;
  • demonstrates how lighting patterns generated by three-dimensional objects interacting with directional lighting are strongly influential upon how the visual perception process enables us to recognize object attributes, such as lightness, colourfulness, texture and gloss;
  • reveals how a designer who understands the role of these lighting patterns in the perceptual process may employ them either to reveal, or to subdue, or to enhance the appearance of selected object attributes by creating appropriate spatial distributions of light;
  • carefully explains calculational techniques and provides easy-to-use spreadsheets, so that layouts of lamps and luminaires are derived that can be relied upon to achieve the required illumination distributions.

Practical lighting design involves devising three-dimensional light fields that create luminous hierarchies related to the visual significance of each element within a scene. By providing you with everything you need to develop a design concept - from the understanding of how lighting influences human perceptions of surroundings, through to engineering efficient and effective lighting solutions Kit Cuttle instills in his readers a new-found confidence in lighting design. Ann Sloan Devlin
R5,479 Discovery Miles 54 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the parking lot to the exam room, doctors can improve the physical surroundings for their patients, yet often they do not. Given the numerous and varied duties doctors must perform, it may fall to the design profession to implement changes, many based on research, to improve healthcare experiences. From location and layout to furnishings and positive distractions, this book provides evidence-based information about the physical environment to help doctors and those who design medical workspaces improve the experience of health care. Along with its research base, a special aspect of this book is the integration of relevant historical material about the office practice of physicians at the beginning of the twentieth century. Many of their design solutions are viable today. In addition to improving the physical design of healthcare facilities, author Ann Sloan Devlin is the granddaughter, daughter, and niece of physicians, as well as the granddaughter and daughter of nurses. She worked in a hospital during college, and has visited a good many practitioners' offices in medical office buildings and ambulatory care settings. This book addresses an overlooked location of care: the doctor's office suite.

Interior Design - Theory and Process (Paperback): Anthony Sully Interior Design - Theory and Process (Paperback)
Anthony Sully
R622 Discovery Miles 6 220 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

Successful interior design requires resolving a multitude of logistical and creative problems to produce a coherent, functional and aesthetically pleasing environment. This book, the first of its kind, tackles the problem from a theoretical approach and not in the conventional how-to or inspiring ideas fashion. Categorising design into nine key elements, including space, light, display, storage, and offering new terminology to describe each area, the author breaks new ground in the field of interior design in an approach that brings vitality and clear communication to a misunderstood and often free-wheeling design discipline. Drawing on more than 45 years' experience as an interior designer, Anthony Sully provides the ultimate resource in insight and explains best practices from interpreting a client's brief, to analysing the building, to setting up a design team and work schedule plus a host of other practical aspects. Peppered through this toolkit are illustrations and explanations of how to analyse space and form in relation to human activity, the formulation of design concepts, and how to learn from mistakes that have been made in the past.
