Mathieu Tillier, Naim Vanthieghem
R3,489 Discovery Miles 34 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In Supplier Dieu dans l'Egypte toulounide, Mathieu Tillier and Naim Vanthieghem provide the edition, translation and study of a booklet preserved on papyrus and dated 267/880-881. It offers a selection of some forty hadiths heard by Khalid ibn Yazid, a minor local scholar, concerning the invocations that every pious Muslim has to use when addressing God. Composed during the reign of the famous governor Ahmad ibn Tulun, the first autonomous ruler of Islamic Egypt, this manuscript bears exceptional testimony to the way traditional sciences were taught at the time. Not only does it open an unprecedented window on the milieu of ordinary transmitters, whose names soon fell into oblivion, but it also sheds new light on the Tulunids' religious policy and on the islamisation of Egypt.

Ahmad b. Ya'qub al-Wallali; Edited by Ibrahim Safri
R4,459 Discovery Miles 44 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Lawami' al-Nazar fi Tahqiq Ma'ani al-Mukhtasar is Ahmad b. Ya'qub al-Wallali's (d. 1128/1716) commentary on al-Sanusi's (d. 895/1490) compendium of logic, al-Mukhtasar. Al-Wallali was the first commentator on al-Sanusi's compendium after the author's autocommentary. In this publication, Ibrahim Safri offers a critical edition of this work, together with a study of the author's life and oeuvre. Safri also tries to show the indirect influence of Avicennism on logic in the Maghribi tradition in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. On the basis of his writings on logic and philosophical theology, al-Wallali was considered a master of rational sciences by his contemporaries.

Models of Desire in Graeco-Arabic Philosophy - From Plotinus to Ibn Tufayl (Hardcover): Bethany Somma Models of Desire in Graeco-Arabic Philosophy - From Plotinus to Ibn Tufayl (Hardcover)
Bethany Somma
R4,037 Discovery Miles 40 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This study argues that late ancient Greek and medieval Islamic philosophers interpret human desire along two frameworks in reaction to Aristotle's philosophy. The investigation of the model dichotomy unfolds historically from the philosophy of Plotinus through the Graeco-Arabic translation movement in 8th-10th century Baghdad to 12th century al-Andalus with the philosophy of Ibn BaGGa and Ibn Tufayl. Diverging on desire's inherent or non-inherent relation to the desiring subject, the two models reveal that the desire's role can orient opposed accounts of human perfection: logically-structured demonstrative knowledge versus an ineffable witnessing of the truth. Understanding desire along these models, philosophers incorporated supra-rational aspects into philosophical accounts of the human being.

Commentary on the Jumal on Logic by Khunaji (English, Arabic, Hardcover): Ibn Wasil al-Hamawi Commentary on the Jumal on Logic by Khunaji (English, Arabic, Hardcover)
Ibn Wasil al-Hamawi; Edited by Khaled El-Rouayheb
R3,669 Discovery Miles 36 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Ibn Wasil (d. 1298), perhaps better known today as a historian and an emissary to the court of King Manfred in southern Italy, was also an eminent logician. The present work is a critical edition of his main work in the field, a commentary on his teacher Khunaji's (d. 1248) handbook al-Jumal. The work helped consolidate the logic of the "later scholars" (such as Khunaji). It also shows that commentators did much more than merely explain the original work and instead regularly discussed and assessed received views. Ibn Wasil's work was an influential contribution to a particularly dynamic chapter in the history of Arabic logic.

The Anthropology of Islamic Law - Education, Ethics, and Legal Interpretation at Egypt's Al-Azhar (Hardcover): Aria Nakissa The Anthropology of Islamic Law - Education, Ethics, and Legal Interpretation at Egypt's Al-Azhar (Hardcover)
Aria Nakissa
R2,590 Discovery Miles 25 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Anthropology of Islamic Law shows how hermeneutic theory and practice theory can be brought together to analyze cultural, legal, and religious traditions. These ideas are developed through an analysis of the Islamic legal tradition, which examines both Islamic legal doctrine and religious education. The book combines anthropology and Islamicist history, using ethnography and in-depth analysis of Arabic religious texts. The book focuses on higher religious learning in contemporary Egypt, examining its intellectual, ethical, and pedagogical dimensions. Data is drawn from fieldwork inside al-Azhar University, Cairo University's Dar al-Ulum, and the network of traditional study circles associated with the al-Azhar mosque. Together these sites constitute the most important venue for the transmission of religious learning in the contemporary Muslim world. The book gives special attention to contemporary Egypt, and also provides a broader analysis relevant to Islamic legal doctrine and religious education throughout history.

The Conclusive Argument from God - Shah Wali Allah of Delhi's Hujjat Allah al-Baligha (Paperback): Shah Wali Allah The Conclusive Argument from God - Shah Wali Allah of Delhi's Hujjat Allah al-Baligha (Paperback)
Shah Wali Allah; Translated by Marcia Hermansen
R1,682 Discovery Miles 16 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Conclusive Argument of God is the master work of Shah Wali Allah of Delhi (1762), considered to be the most important Muslim thinker of pre-modern South Asia. This work, originally written in Arabic, represents a synthesis of the Islamic intellectual disciplines authoritative in the 18th century. In order to argue for the rational, ethical, and spiritual basis for the implementation of the hadith injunctions of the Prophet Muhammad, Shah Wali Allah develops a cohesive schema of the metaphysical, psychological, and social knowledge of his time. This work provides an extensive and detailed picture of Muslim theology and interpretive strategies on the eve of the modern period and is still evoked by numerous contemporary Islamic movements.

George Warner
R3,182 Discovery Miles 31 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ibn Babawayh - also known as al-Shaykh al-Saduq - was a prominent Twelver Shi'i scholar of hadith. Writing within the first century after the vanishing of the twelfth imam, al-Saduq represents a pivotal moment in Twelver hadith literature, as this Shi'i community adjusted to a world without a visible imam and guide, a world wherein the imams could only be accessed through the text of their remembered words and deeds. George Warner's study of al-Saduq's work examines the formation of Shi'i hadith literature in light of these unique dynamics, as well as giving a portrait of an important but little-studied early Twelver thinker. Though almost all of al-Saduq's writings are collections of hadith, Warner's approach pays careful attention to how these texts are selected and presented to explore what they can reveal about their compiler, offering insight into al-Saduq's ideas and suggesting new possibilities for the wider study of hadith.

Robert M Doran Sj
R2,154 Discovery Miles 21 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second volume of Robert M. Doran's magisterial The Trinity in History continues his exploration of the Trinitarian theology of Bernard Lonergan, focusing now on the notions of relations and persons and connecting the systematic proposals with the so-called "Third Quest for the Historical Jesus." Doran not only interprets Lonergan's major work in Trinitarian theology and Christology but also suggests at least a twofold advance: a new version of the psychological analogy for understanding Trinitarian doctrine and a new starting point for the whole of systematic theology. He links these theological concerns with Rene Girard's mimetic theory, proposes a theory of history based in Lonergan's scale of values, and creates a link between exegetical and historical scholarship and systematic theology.

Astrolabes in Medieval Cultures (Paperback): Josefina Rodriguez-Arribas, Charles Burnett, Silke Ackermann, Ryan Szpiech Astrolabes in Medieval Cultures (Paperback)
Josefina Rodriguez-Arribas, Charles Burnett, Silke Ackermann, Ryan Szpiech
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

First published as a special issue of the journal Medieval Encounters (vol. 23, 2017), this volume, edited by Josefina Rodriguez-Arribas, Charles Burnett, Silke Ackermann, and Ryan Szpiech, brings together fifteen studies on various aspects of the astrolabe in medieval cultures. The astrolabe, developed in antiquity and elaborated throughout the Middle Ages, was used for calculation, teaching, and observation, and also served astrological and medical purposes. It was the most popular and prestigious of the mathematical instruments, and was found equally among practitioners of various sciences and arts as among princes in royal courts. By considering sources and instruments from Muslim, Christian, and Jewish contexts, this volume provides state-of-the-art research on the history and use of the astrolabe throughout the Middle Ages. Contributors are Silke Ackermann, Emilia Calvo, John Davis, Laura Fernandez Fernandez, Miquel Forcada, Azucena Hernandez, David A. King, Taro Mimura, Gunther Oestmann, Josefina Rodriguez-Arribas, Sreeramula Rajeswara Sarma, Petra G. Schmidl, Giorgio Strano, Flora Vafea, and Johannes Thomann.

Giovanni Maria Martini
R4,648 Discovery Miles 46 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 'Ala' al-Dawla al-Simnani between Spiritual Authority and Political Power: A Persian Lord and Intellectual in the Heart of the Ilkhanate, Giovanni Maria Martini investigates the personality of a major figure in the socio-political and cultural landscape of Mongol Iran. In pursuing this objective, the author follows parallel paths: Chapter 1 provides the most updated reconstruction of Simnani's (d. 736/1336) biography, which, thanks to its unique features, emerges as a cross-section of Iranian society and as a microhistory of the complex relationships between a Sufi master, Persian elites and Mongol rulers during the Ilkhanid period; Chapter 2 contains a study on the phenomenon of Arabic-Persian diglossia in Simnani's written work, arguing for its socio-religious function; in Chapters 3 to 6 the critical editions of two important, interrelated treatises by Simnani are presented; finally, Chapter 7 offers the first full-length annotated translation of a long work by Simnani ever to appear in a Western language.

Islam and Rationality - The Impact of al-Ghazali. Papers collected on his 900th Anniversary. Vol. 2 (Hardcover): Frank Griffel Islam and Rationality - The Impact of al-Ghazali. Papers collected on his 900th Anniversary. Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
Frank Griffel
R5,247 Discovery Miles 52 470 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Al-Ghazali (d. 505/1111) is one of the most influential thinkers of Islam. There is hardly a genre of Islamic literature where he is not regarded as a major authority. Islamic Law, Sufism, ethics, philosophy, and theology are all deeply shaped by him. Yet in the past thirty years, the field of Ghazali-studies has been shaken by the realization that Avicenna (Ibn Sina, d. 428/1037) and other philosophers had a strong influence on him. Now, after the 900th anniversary at his death, the field emerges stronger than ever. This second volume of Islam and Rationality: The Impact of al-Ghazali brings together twelve leading experts on al-Ghazali who write about his thought and the impact it had on later Muslim thinkers. Contributors are: Anna Ayse Akasoy, Ahmed El Shamsy, Kenneth Garden, Frank Griffel, Jules Janssens, Damien Janos, Taneli Kukkonen, Stephen Ogden, M. Sait OEzervarli, Martin Riexinger, Ulrich Rudolph, and Ayman Shihadeh.
