In this landmark volume from 1976, Robert Crowder presents an organized review of the concepts that guide the study of learning and memory. The basic organization of the book is theoretical, rather than historical or methodological, and there are four broad sections. The first is on coding in memory, and the relations between memory and vision, audition and speech. The second section focuses on short-term memory. The third is loosely organized around the topic of learning. The final section includes chapters that focus on the process of retrieval, with special attention to recognition and to serial organization. Crowder presumes no prior knowledge of the subject matter on the part of the reader; technical terms are kept to a minimum, and he makes every effort to introduce them carefully when they first occur. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.
The idea for this book grew out of the conference "Motivational
Psychology of Ontogenesis" held at the Max Planck Institute for
Human Development in Berlin, Germany, in May 1998. This conference
focused on the interface of development and motivation and
therefore brought together scholars from three major areas in
psychology - developmental, motivational and lifespan.
Although university studies do not always provide translators with the necessary skills, many of them continue in their professional capacity, which is understood to be the result of self-directed learning processes. Thus, translators seem to be not only agents of their own education, but also products of translation operations. The data obtained by means of a questionnaire covers three areas: specialisation and the market, qualifications and competence as well as affects and attitudes. Also, a general description of translators' specific self-directed learning strategies is provided. The results reveal that institutional training has virtually no importance in the professional education of translators and that the skills missed most in their everyday activity are those they failed to acquire by means of self-directed learning procedures.
Attention and learning are two of the most important topics in
contemporary cognitive psychology and behavioural neuroscience. Of
even more interest is how the two interact. Meaningful stimuli and
their meaningful effects are invariably embedded in a complex
background of meaningless information. Yet, in order to learn about
meaningful relationships between events, an organism needs to be
able to extract the relevant from the irrelevant. The ability to
direct attention selectively to some stimuli and away from others
is one fundamental mechanism by which this filtering of information
can occur. But what controls this selective attention? Why are
certain stimuli selected and others rejected? What are the neural
mechanisms underlying this ability? Are they the same in humans as
in other animals? And what are the consequences of damage to this
attentional system? These are the questions that this book aims to
answer.
This book systematically summarizes the author's more than 30 years of experience in teaching reform and educational research. The book is divided into three parts. Part I focuses on the comprehensiveness of thinking and the relationship between the coordinated development of thinking and the overall development of human beings. Part II and Part III mainly discuss the six basic principles of learning and thinking: the principle of the working memory of thinking, the principle of learning transfer, the principle of the basic process of learning, the principle of multi-level development of ability, the principle of sustainable development of learning, and the principle of subjectivity of learning. This book features the rules and characteristics of student learning with a student-centered approach, which can help teachers and educational researchers to better understand students and provide theoretical guidance for students' all-round development.
"Working memory" is a term used to refer to the systems responsible for the temporary storage of information during the performance of cognitive tasks. The efficiency of working memory skills in children may place limitations on the learning and performance of educationally important skills such as reading, language comprehension and arithmetic. Originally published in 1992, this monograph considers the development of working memory skills in children with severe learning difficulties. These children have marked difficulties with a wide range of cognitive tasks. The studies reported show that they also experience profound difficulties in verbal working memory tasks. These memory problems are associated with a failure to rehearse information within an articulatory loop. Training the children to rehearse material is shown to help alleviate these problems. The implications of these studies for understanding normal memory development, and for models of the structure of working memory and its development are discussed. It is argued that the working memory deficits seen in people with severe learning difficulties may contribute to their difficulties on other cognitive tasks.
Originally published in 1979, this volume contains chapters prepared following a conference at SUNY- Binghamton in 1977. The conference was the outcome of exciting new developments that had occurred in the ontogeny of learning and memory at the time, as well as a long-standing friendship between the editors. Many changes had taken place in the years leading up to this volume and there were now many more researchers active in the field. This volume reflected the rapidly changing state of this research area at the time and includes early contributions from researchers now well established in the field.
Originally published in 1973, this volume looks at the organisation of memory data in, what at the time was termed, 'mental handicap'. The first part surveys recent work in this important area, giving a general account of experiments and findings. The second part reports a particular piece of research on memory in people with learning difficulties, then called 'subnormal individuals'. Very much of its time, in terms of the terminology, this was an important book for anyone concerned with people with intellectual disabilities and for experimental psychologists involved with the processes of memory.
Originally published in 1980, this volume explores some of the dramatic and exciting changes that had taken place in the field of conditioning in the 15 years prior to publication. Developmental changes in cognitive abilities in childhood have long been of interest to researchers across many fields, including behavioral sciences, communications, education, and medicine. With the publication of research findings showing individual differences in the development of children's learning skills has come the realization that models, methodologies, and analysis approaches that include consideration of individual differences are needed. It has brought an increase in research collaborations among experts in different fields who bring different approaches together in studies of cognitive abilities.
