R4,548 Discovery Miles 45 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Classical conditioning (CC) refers to the general paradigm for scientific studies of learning and memory initiated by Pavlov and his followers. As a model system associative learning in human and animals, CC continues to play a central role in research and an expanding role in evaluating disorders of learning and memory (aging, drug abuse, teratology). The book is aimed at the growing population of scientists and medical specialists who employ CC methods. Despite the current high level of interest in CC within neuroscience. There is presently no single source that provides up-to-date comprehensive coverage of core topics. CC is a very large field. Nevertheless, some organisms and behaviors have dominated the neuroscience scene. Foremost of these are classical eyeblink conditioning (rats, cats, rabbits, and humans) and 'fear' conditioning. This handbook of CC focuses on these systems.

E. De Corte, Lieven Verschaffel, N.J. Entwistle, J. Merrienboer
R3,866 Discovery Miles 38 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the past ten to fifteen years the international scene of research on learning and instruction has witnessed the emergence of important and promising developments. New theoretical frameworks, design principles, and research methodologies focusing on the construction, implementation, and evaluation of powerful learning environments have been put forward, coming from three intersecting subdomains within the broader field of research on learning and instruction - namely instructional psychology, instructional technology, and instructional design. Although it is obvious that the developments in those three subdomains are characterized by similarities and convergencies, there are still important differences. Therefore, there is a great need for scientific debate and attempts to integrate, or justify, the contrasting theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and empirical outcomes.
A European research network, coordinated by the Center for Instructional Psychology and Technology of the University of Leuven, has been set up to work towards this end. The present volume is the first collective output of this European research network, and focuses on unravelling and identifying basic component and dimensions of powerful learning environments. It is based on the presentations and discussions that constituted the "piece de r??sistance" of a first meeting of the research network.

While most teachers are skilled in providing opportunities for the progression of children's learning, it is sometimes without fully understanding the theory behind it. With greater insight into what is currently known about the processes of learning and about individual learners, teachers are better equipped to provide experiences and situations that are more likely to lead to effective acquisition of knowledge, concepts and skills. Ways of Learning has been widely used and now, fully updated, it seeks to provide further insight into the ways in which learning takes place, which teachers can make use of in their planning and teaching, including: an overview of learning behaviourism and the beginning of theory cognitive and constructivist learning multiple intelligences and learning styles difficulties with learning the influence of neuropsychology other theories, philosophies and names relating theory to practice. The fourth edition of this book includes developments in areas covered in the preceding editions, as well as expanding on certain topics to bring about a wider perspective; most notably, a new consideration of learning styles and a new chapter detailing important thinkers and writers from the history of education and their continuing influence along with other theories, ideas and thoughts not included in the rest of the book. The book also reflects changes in government policy and is closely related to new developments in practice. Written for trainee teachers, serving teachers and others interested in learning for various reasons, Ways of Learning serves as a valuable introduction for students setting out on higher degree work who are in need of an introduction to the topic.

Handbook of Classical Conditioning (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): David G. Lavond, Joseph E. Steinmetz Handbook of Classical Conditioning (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)

R2,950 Discovery Miles 29 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When conducting scientific research in any field, it is not sufficient to simply design thoughtful and informative experiments to explore ideas and hypotheses. The experiments must be conducted in such a manner that the data generated effectively address the ideas and hypotheses under study. Collecting good data necessitates the use of good methods, techniques, and instrumentation. Behavioral neuroscience is most certainly a field that, over the years, has required novel, inventive, and effective methods and tech niques to collect data on a rather difficult subject, namely, how the brain and nervous system encode behavior. Perhaps one of the most interesting things about the field of behav ioral neuroscience is that most scientists in this field are engaged in a variety of activities-it is not always the same boring routine. The rule, not the ex ception, in this field is that investigators are trained in a variety of techniques and skills. This work requires knowledge of skills in such diverse tech niques as surgery, animal training, basic electronics, computer programming, statistics, and histology, as well as having a good theoretical background knowledge of the relevant literature and the creativity and logic necessary to design and execute critical experiments. One does not have to be an expert in all of these skills, and conversely not all skills require an expert."

Interactive Assessment (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): H. Carl Haywood, David Tzuriel Interactive Assessment (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
H. Carl Haywood, David Tzuriel
R5,680 Discovery Miles 56 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The terms interactive and dynamic would never have been associated with psychological and psychoeducational assessment a generation ago. They have currency now because of widespread dissatisfaction with the normative, standardized testing model, criticism of theoretical concepts of intelligence, recognition of abuses of standardized intelligence testing, and frustration with prediction and classification as primary goals of assessment. It is almost certainly true that public policy concerns propel scientific activity far more often than science propels public policy In the case of psychological assessment, public policy concerns have arisen in the last 20 years primarily around issues of possible "discrimination" against members of ethnic minorities. At the same time, there has been a re surgence of dedication to "excellence in education" goals. These concerns have led to such extreme measures as prohibition of the use of standard ized intelligence tests to determine school placement decisions, especially for minority children. They have led also to a search for alternatives to standardized, normative testing. The chapters in this volume represent a variety of answers to this need."

Classical conditioning of the nictitating membrane (NM) eyeblink response in rabbits is a useful model system for the study of the neurobiology of learning and memory. This paradigm that is so well described on a biological level has also been applied to studies of normal development over the life span and to instances of abnormal developmental phenomena. Eyeblink conditioning has been studied from molecular and neural network perspectives, and the paradigm is of demonstrated utility in elucidating mechanisms in physiology and pharmacology. This model system provides a behavioral paradigm in animals that has a close analog in human behavior. Perspectives of recent developments in human eyeblink classical conditioning research are presented in the companion volume to this book, Eyeblink Classical Conditioning: Applications in Humans.

Laurie Thomas, Sheila Harri-Augstein
R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

From its foundation in the 1950s by George Kelly, Personal Construct Psychology continued to grow, both as a movement among psychologists and then in industry, education, government and commerce. Originally published in 1985 this title offers a compendium of elaborations and new conversational uses for Kelly's repertory grid technique. The authors have dramatically transformed the grid from a static measuring instrument to a dynamic tool for a personal exploration of the learning process itself. This grid-based Reflective Learning Technology enables individuals, pairs, groups and organisations to develop their learning in environments of work, family, education and society. As the originators and best-known practitioners of interactive grids, the authors give the reader an A-Z of these techniques. Case studies include management training, quality control, staff appraisal, job selection, team building, manufacturing, marketing and production as well as learning at a distance, learning to learn in schools, youth training, reading to learn and other learning skills, staff development, social work, counselling and therapy. Their development of a theory of learning conversation and conversational grid software opens up an imaginative, exciting and more humane approach to the use of microcomputers in all forms of education, while at the same time demonstrating the essentially autonomous nature of human learning. Available again after many years out of print, this book is of even greater value today than when first published.

Promoting Social and Emotional Learning - Guidelines for Educators (Hardcover): Maurice Elias, Joseph E. Zins, Roger P.... Promoting Social and Emotional Learning - Guidelines for Educators (Hardcover)
Maurice Elias, Joseph E. Zins, Roger P. Weissberg
R962 Discovery Miles 9 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fostering knowledgeable, responsible, and caring students is one of the most urgent challenges facing schools, families, and communities. Promoting Social and Emotional Learning provides sound principles for meeting this challenge. Students today face unparalleled demands. In addition to achieving academically, they must learn to work cooperatively, make responsible decisions about social and health practices, resist negative peer and media influences, contribute constructively to their family and community, function in an increasingly diverse society, and acquire the skills, attitudes, and values necessary to become productive workers and citizens. A comprehensive, integrated program of social and emotional education can help students meet these many demands. The authors draw upon scientific studies, theories, site visits, and their own extensive experiences to describe approaches to social and emotional learning at all levels. Framing the discussion are 39 concise guidelines, as well as many field-inspired examples for classrooms, schools, and districts. Chapters address how to develop, implement, and evaluate effective strategies. Educators who have programs in place will find ways to strengthen them. Those seeking further direction will find an abundance of approaches and ideas. Appendixes include a curriculum scope for preschool through grade 12 and an extensive list of contacts that readers may follow up on for firsthand knowledge about effective social and emotional programs. The authors of Promoting Social and Emotional Learning are members of the Research and Guidelines Work Group of the Collaborative for the Advancement of Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Interactive Learning Technology for the Deaf (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): A. Brekelmans Interactive Learning Technology for the Deaf (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
A. Brekelmans; Edited by Ben A.G. Elsendoorn, Frans Coninx
R2,934 Discovery Miles 29 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the final result of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop 'Interactive Learning Technology for the Deaf' , which was held between June 4 -7, 1991, in Sint-Michielsgestel, the Netherlands. The scientific organizing committee consisted of Frans Coninx (director), Ben Elsendoorn, Richard Foulds and Christopher Jones. The idea for this workshop originated from the observation that interactive learning technology seemed to be very promising in that it might help improve education of deaf children, but also from the given fact that general achievements in helping deaf children to acquire language could still be improved. Before this workshop, results on research in the areas of (sign) language acquistion and education of deaf children, improvement of speech produc tion and listening skills, as well as the use of interactive learning technol ogy, could be gathered in journals and at congresses. However, no meeting was ever organised where experts from these different fields were present at the same time. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts in the fields of deaf education as well as interactive learning technology, to construct a multi disciplinary platform where ideas and research results could be discussed from various angles and which would serve as a jumping-board for future collaboration. We thought it essential that specialists from various direc tions in deaf education -i.e. bilingual, oral, and Total Communication (TC) approaches -were present, to contribute to the multi-displinary character of the workshop.

Jerome Bruner is one of the best-known and most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. He was one of the key figures in the so called 'cognitive revolution' that today dominates psychology around the world - but it is in the field of education that his influence has been especially felt. Bruner helped start the educational reform movement in the USA during the early 1960s and served on the President's Science Advisory Committee during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. He has since been involved in a variety of educational enterprises, including the founding of Head Start, of which he was a major architect. 'How one conceives of education', he wrote, 'we have finally come to recognize, is a function of how one conceives of the culture and its aims, professed and otherwise.' In this two volume set, Bruner has selected and assembled his most important writings about education. Each volume begins with a specially written Introduction, which sets the context and introduces the selection. These books are the ultimate guide to Jerome Bruner's most important and influential work - ideal for both students and academics who want to be able to follow the development of his thinking over his seventy-year career.

The Development and Education of the Mind - The Selected Works of Howard Gardner (Paperback, New ed): Howard Gardner The Development and Education of the Mind - The Selected Works of Howard Gardner (Paperback, New ed)
Howard Gardner
R1,262 Discovery Miles 12 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the World Library of Educationalists series, international experts themselves compile career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces--extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, major theoretical and/practical contributions--so the work can read them in a single manageable volume. Readers will be able to follow the themes and strands of their work and see their contribution to the development of a field.
A developmental psychologist by training, Howard Gardner has spent the last 30 years researching, thinking and writing about the development and education of the mind. He has contributed over 30 years researching, thinking and writing about the development and education of the mind. He has contributed over 30 books and 700 articles to the field. He is best known for his critique of the notion that intelligence is one single human intelligence that can be assessed through psychometric tests. Instead Gardner developed the theory of "multiple intelligence" which states that an individual has eight relatively autonomous intelligence:
- Language
- Music
- Emotional
- Logical-mathematical
- Spatial
- Kinesthetic
- Creative
- Interpersonal (understanding oneself)
This theory has proved popular, particularly with those who see the IQ testing a relatively narrow set of abilities.
In this book, he brings together over 20 of his key writings in one place. The book begins with a specially written Introduction, which gives an overview of Howard's career and contextualizes his selection in this book. Through his selection we can see the development of his thinking as well as the development of the field. This is the onlybook that offers this insight into this great scholar's work.

Cognition and Instruction - Twenty-five Years of Progress (Hardcover): Sharon M. Carver, David Klahr Cognition and Instruction - Twenty-five Years of Progress (Hardcover)
Sharon M. Carver, David Klahr
R5,577 Discovery Miles 55 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is based on papers presented at the 30th Carnegie Mellon Symposium on Cognition. This particular symposium was conceived in reference to the 1974 symposium entitled Cognition and Instruction. In the 25 years since that symposium, reciprocal relationships have been forged between psychology and education, research and practice, and laboratory and classroom learning contexts. Synergistic advances in theories, empirical findings, and instructional practice have been facilitated by the establishment of new interdisciplinary journals, teacher education courses, funding initiatives, and research institutes. So, with all of this activity, where is the field of cognition and instruction? How much progress has been made in 25 years? What remains to be done? This volume proposes and illustrates some exciting and challenging answers to these questions.
Chapters in this volume describe advances and challenges in four areas, including development and instruction, teachers and instructional strategies, tools for learning from instruction, and social contexts of instruction and learning. Detailed analyses of tasks, subjects' knowledge and processes, and the changes in performance over time have led to new understanding of learners' representations, their use of multiple strategies, and the important role of metacognitive processes. New methods for assessing and tracking the development and elaboration of knowledge structures and processing strategies have yielded new conceptualizations of the process of change. Detailed cognitive analysis of expert teachers, as well as a direct focus on enhancing teachers' cognitive models of learners and use of effective instructional strategies, are other areas that have seen tremendous growth and refinement in the past 25 years. Similarly, the strong impact of curriculum materials and activities based on a thorough cognitive analysis of the task has been extended to the use of technological tools for learning, such as intelligent tutors and complex computer based instructional interfaces. Both the shift to conducting a significant portion of the cognition and instruction research in real classrooms and the increased collaboration between academics and educators have brought the role of the social context to center stage.

Situated Learning (Paperback): Charmi Patel Situated Learning (Paperback)
Charmi Patel
R230 Discovery Miles 2 300 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Social anthropologist Jean Lave and computer scientist Etienne Wenger’s seminal Situated Learning helped change the fields of cognitive science and pedagogy by approaching learning from a novel angle. Traditionally, theories of learning and education had focused on processes of cognition – the mental processes of knowledge formation that occur within an individual. Lave and Wenger chose to look at learning not as an individual process, but a social one.

As so often with the creative thinking process, a small, simple shift in emphasis was all that was required to show things in an entirely different light. What Situated Learning illustrated – and emphasized – was that learning is dependent on its social situation. Even though the most effective way to learn is through interaction with experts and peers in a community organized around a common interest, the traditional cognitive learning model failed to account for the way in which learners interact with their ‘community of practice.’ The new hypothesis that Lave and Wenger developed was that learning can be seen as a continuously evolving set of relationships situated within a social context. This allowed Lave and Wenger to place discussions of apprenticeship and workplace learning on a new footing – and led in turn to the book’s impressive impact in business and management scholarship.

Cognition and Learning in Diverse Settings (Hardcover, New): Thomas E Scruggs, Margo A Mastropieri Cognition and Learning in Diverse Settings (Hardcover, New)
Thomas E Scruggs, Margo A Mastropieri
R3,756 Discovery Miles 37 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Essential to the treatment of learning and behavioral disabilities is an understanding of the cognitive processes brought into play in educational contexts, how they contribute to problems in learning and behavior, and how these processes might be ameliorated. Equally important is a careful consideration of the setting in which learning takes place, and how it ameliorates, or contributes to, learning and behavioral disorders. In this volume, the role of cognition in learning and behavioral disorders is considered along with investigation of learning in diverse settings, including clinical, special class, and inclusive general education classrooms. In this volume are chapters on such cognitive processes as working memory, spatial learning, and cognition in mathematics. In addition, learning is examined within a variety of setting arrangements, and considers such topics as the context of teacher-student relationships, co-teaching arrangements in inclusive instruction, issues in educational placement, clinically-based interventions for dyscalculia, collaborative teaching relationships in inclusive social studies teaching. This volume includes contributions from internationally recognized experts in the field of learning and behavioral disabilities. The book is intended for interested professionals and practitioners; researchers in learning and behavioral disabilities; and graduate students in psychology, education, and special education, particularly those concerned with the issues of cognition and learning in a variety of instructional contexts.
