Reality, Representation and Projection (Hardcover): John Haldane, Crispin Wright Reality, Representation and Projection (Hardcover)
John Haldane, Crispin Wright
R3,330 Discovery Miles 33 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an important collection of new essays on various topics relating to realism and its rivals in metaphysics, logic, metaethics, and epistemology. The contributors include some of the leading authors in these fields and in several cases their essays constitute definitive statements of their views. Although not primarily historical this volume includes discussion of philosophers from the Middle Ages to the present day, from Aquinas to Wittgenstein. No one seriously interested in questions about realism can afford to be without this collection.

Exploring Topics in the History and Philosophy of Logic (Hardcover, Digital original): George Englebretsen Exploring Topics in the History and Philosophy of Logic (Hardcover, Digital original)
George Englebretsen
R3,271 Discovery Miles 32 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While post-Fregean logicians tend to ignore or even denigrate the traditional logic of Aristotle and the Scholastics, new work in recent years has shown the viability of a renewed, extended, and strengthened logic of terms that shares fundamental features of the old syllogistic. A number of logicians, following the lead of Fred Sommers, have built just such a term logic. It is a system of formal logic that not only matches the expressive and inferential powers of today's standard logic, but surpasses it and is far simpler and more natural. This book aims to substantiate this claim by exhibiting just how the term logic can shed need light on a variety of challenges that face any system of formal logic.

Philip E.B. Jourdain
R1,477 Discovery Miles 14 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This skit of Bertrand Russell s philosophy was originally published in 1918 by Russell s correspondent friend Jourdain. The introduction explains that the contents purport to be lost papers written by Mr. B*rtr*nd R*ss*ll, a contemporary of Bertrand Russell. This politically humorous volume from the early 20th Century parodies the writing style of Russell as well as his theories.

Individualism in Modern Thought - From Adam Smith to Hayek (Paperback): Lorenzo Infantino Individualism in Modern Thought - From Adam Smith to Hayek (Paperback)
Lorenzo Infantino
R1,659 Discovery Miles 16 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a comprehensive survey of methodological individualism in social, political and economic thought from the Enlightenment to the 20th century. Exploring the works of such figures as de Mandeville, Smith, Marx, Spencer, Durkheim, Simmel, Weber, Hayek, Popper and Parsons, this study underlines the contrasts between methodological collectivism and methodological individualism. The detailed analysis offered here also reveals the theoretical presuppositions behind the collectivist and individualist traditions and the practical consequences of their applications. Infantino concludes in favour of individualism.

Language and Philosophical Problems (Paperback): Soeren Stenlund Language and Philosophical Problems (Paperback)
Soeren Stenlund
R818 Discovery Miles 8 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Language and Philosophical Problems investigates problems about mind, meaning and mathematics rooted in preconceptions of language. It deals in particular with problems which are connected with our tendency to be misled by certain prevailing views and preconceptions about language. Philosophical claims made by theorists of meaning are scrutinized and shown to be connected with common views about the nature of certain mathematical notions and methods. Drawing in particular on Wittgenstein's ideas, Sren Stenlund demonstrates a strategy for tracing out and resolving conceptual and philosophical problems. By a critical examination of examples from different areas of philosophy, he shows that many problems arise through the transgression of the limits of the use of technical concepts and formal methods. Many prima facie different kinds of problems are shown to have common roots, and should thus be dealt and resolved together. Such an approach is usually prevented by the influence of traditional philosophical terminology and classification. The results of this investigation make it clear that the received ways of subdividing the subject matter of philosophy often conceal the roots of the problem.

The Politics of Rationality - Reason through Occidental History (Hardcover, New): Charles Webel The Politics of Rationality - Reason through Occidental History (Hardcover, New)
Charles Webel
R4,922 Discovery Miles 49 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What are reason and rationality? How significant are recent postmodernist and neuroscientific challenges to these longheld notions? Should we abandon a belief in reason and an adherence to rationality? Or can reason and rationality be reformulated and reframed? And what does politics have to do with how we think about reason and why we act more or less rationally? The Politics of Rationality differs from other books with "reason" or "rationality" due to its historical, political, depth-psychological, and multidisciplinary approach to understanding reason through history. Charles P. Webel eloquently clarifies the links among ideas, their creators, the relevant mental processes, and the political cultures within which such important concepts as reasons and rationality take hold. He demonstrates how reason and rationality/irrationality have become what they mean for us today and proposes a way to rethink reason and rationality in light of the withering critiques leveled against them. In doing so, he presents a "history of reason and rationality" by examining the intellectual and political contexts of four representative theorists of reason and rationality-- Plato, Machiavelli, Kant, and Weber-and by addressing contemporary challenges posed by postmodernism, depth psychology, and neurophilosophy.

Logic and How it Gets That Way (Paperback): Dale Jacquette Logic and How it Gets That Way (Paperback)
Dale Jacquette
R1,281 Discovery Miles 12 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this challenging and provocative analysis, Dale Jacquette argues that contemporary philosophy labours under a number of historically inherited delusions about the nature of logic and the philosophical significance of certain formal properties of specific types of logical constructions. Exposing some of the key misconceptions about formal symbolic logic and its relation to thought, language and the world, Jacquette clears the ground of some very well-entrenched philosophical doctrines about the nature of logic, including some of the most fundamental seldom-questioned parts of elementary propositional and predicate-quantificational logic. Having presented difficulties for conventional ways of thinking about truth functionality, the metaphysics of reference and predication, the role of a concept of truth in a theory of meaning, among others, Jacquette proceeds to reshape the network of ideas about traditional logic that philosophy has acquired along with modern logic itself. In so doing Jacquette is able to offer a new perspective on a number of existing problems in logic and philosophy of logic.

Colours in the development of Wittgenstein's Philosophy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Marcos Silva Colours in the development of Wittgenstein's Philosophy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Marcos Silva
R3,140 Discovery Miles 31 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents and discusses the varying and seminal role which colour plays in the development of Wittgenstein's philosophy. Having once said that "Colours spur us to philosophize", the theme of colour was one to which Wittgenstein returned constantly throughout his career. Ranging from his Notebooks, 1914-1916 and the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus to the posthumously published Remarks on Colours and On Certainty, this book explores how both his view of philosophical problems generally and his view on colours specifically changed considerably over time. Paying particular attention to his so-called intermediary period, it takes a case-based approach to the presentation of colour in texts from this period, from Some Remarks on Logical Form and Philosophical Remarks to his Big Typescript.

Towards a Formalization of Thomistic Theodicy - Formalized Attempts to Set Formal Logical Bases to State First Elements of Relations Considered in the Thomistic Theodicy (Hardcover, New edition)
Edward Nieznanski
R1,276 Discovery Miles 12 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of the book is to gauge the possibilities of formalization of the Thomistic Theodicy. The benefits of such formalization attempts may be mutual, both in applied logic and the formalized field. Concerning formal logic on the linguistic improvements in all areas of science, formalization attempts provide useful material that can be applied to develop semiotics of the Thomistic language.

A Reading of Gilles Deleuze's Logic of Sense (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Mehdi Parsa A Reading of Gilles Deleuze's Logic of Sense (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Mehdi Parsa
R3,348 Discovery Miles 33 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a reading of Gilles Deleuze's masterpiece Logic of Sense. It provides a thorough and systematic reading of Deleuze's book by focusing on the aspects that are neglected in the existing literature. Specifically, the claim that Deleuze's Logic of Sense provides a convincing answer for the most important question of the history of philosophy regarding the relation between thought and existence as well as the relation between logic and ontology is defended. The answer is that if thought is related to existence, logic is supposed to be, not the logic of essence, but rather the logic of sense. This analysis s pursued respectively through Deleuze's readings of Frege, the ancient Stoics, Lewis Carroll, Kant, Lautman, Leibniz, and Melanie Klein.

Blindspots (Hardcover): Roy A. Sorensen Blindspots (Hardcover)
Roy A. Sorensen
R4,305 Discovery Miles 43 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1942 G.E. Moore first wrote about the curious sort of 'nonsense' exhibited by the statement 'it is raining but I do not believe it'. What Moore discovered was a species of blindspots: consistent propositions that cannot be rationally accepted by certain individuals even though they might be true. In this book, Professor Sorenson aims to provide a unified solution to a large family of philosophical puzzles and paradoxes through a study of blindspots . He devotes special attention to revealing their role in 'slippery slope' reasoning.

"Everything one might want for a course on [Frege and Russell] is included, along with a seventy-five-page introduction that carefully lays out the contributions of each essay." -- Bernard Linsky, University of Alberta

Coalescent Argumentation (Hardcover): Michael A. Gilbert Coalescent Argumentation (Hardcover)
Michael A. Gilbert
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Coalescent Argumentation" is based on the concept that arguments can function from agreement, rather than disagreement. To prove this idea, Gilbert first discusses how several components--emotional, visceral (physical) and kisceral (intuitive) are utilized in an argumentative setting by people everyday. These components, also characterized as "modes," are vital to argumentative communication because they affect both the argument and the resulting outcome.
In addition to the components/modes, this book also stresses the goals in argumentation as a means for understanding one's own and one's opposer's positions. Gilbert argues that by viewing positions as complex human events involving a variety of communicative modes, we are better able to find commonalities across positions, and, therefore, move from conflict to resolution. By focusing on agreement and shared goals in all modes, arguers can coalesce diverse positions and more easily distinguish between minor or unrelated differences and core disagreements. This permits much greater latitude for locating shared beliefs, values, and attitudes that will lead to conflict resolution.

One Hundred Years of Russells Paradox - Mathematics, Logic, Philosophy (Hardcover): Link Godehard One Hundred Years of Russells Paradox - Mathematics, Logic, Philosophy (Hardcover)
Link Godehard
R6,880 Discovery Miles 68 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The papers collected in this volume represent the main body of research arising from the International Munich Centenary Conference in 2001, which commemorated the discovery of the famous Russell Paradox a hundred years ago. The 31 contributions and the introductory essay by the editor were (with two exceptions) all originally written for the volume. The volume serves a twofold purpose, historical and systematic. One focus is on Bertrand Russell's logic and logical philosophy, taking into account the rich sources of the Russell Archives, many of which have become available only recently. The second equally important aim is to present original research in the broad range of foundational studies that draws on both current conceptions and recent technical advances in the above-mentioned fields. The volume contributes therefore, to the well-established body of mathematical philosophy initiated to a large extent by Russell's work.

A New Introduction to Modal Logic (Hardcover): M.J. Cresswell, G.E. Hughes A New Introduction to Modal Logic (Hardcover)
M.J. Cresswell, G.E. Hughes
R4,508 Discovery Miles 45 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This long-awaited book replaces not one but both of Hughes and Cresswell's two previous classic studies of modal logic: "An Introduction to Modal Logic" and "A Companion to Modal Logic."
"A New Introduction to Modal Logic" has been completely rewritten by the authors to incorporate all the developments that have taken place since 1968 both in modal propositional logical and modal predicate logic, but without sacrificing the clarity of exposition and approachability that were essential features of the earlier works.
The book takes readers through the most basic systems of modal prepositional logic right up to systems of modal predicate with identity. It deals with both technical developments such as completeness and incompleteness, and finite and infinite models, and discusses philosophical applications, especially, in the area of modal predicate logic.

The Theory of Logical Types (Routledge Revivals) - Monographs in Modern Logic (Paperback): Irving Copi The Theory of Logical Types (Routledge Revivals) - Monographs in Modern Logic (Paperback)
Irving Copi
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This reissue, first published in 1971, provides a brief historical account of the Theory of Logical Types; and describes the problems that gave rise to it, its various different formulations (Simple and Ramified), the difficulties connected with each, and the criticisms that have been directed against it. Professor Copi seeks to make the subject accessible to the non-specialist and yet provide a sufficiently rigorous exposition for the serious student to see exactly what the theory is and how it works.

The Square of Opposition - A General Framework for Cognition (Paperback, New edition): Jean-Yves B eziau, Gillman Payette The Square of Opposition - A General Framework for Cognition (Paperback, New edition)
Jean-Yves B eziau, Gillman Payette
R1,760 Discovery Miles 17 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The square of opposition is a simple geometrical figure expressing some fundamental ideas about cognition. It is based on Aristotle's philosophy and has been fascinating people for two thousand years. The three notions of opposition presented in the square can be applied to analyze and understand such diverse subjects as reasoning about mathematical objects, perceptions of reality, speech acts, moral reasoning and reasoning about possibility. This book presents recent research papers dealing with the history and philosophy of the square, new diagrammatic and mathematical developments arising from it, and its applications to the fields of linguistics, psychology and argumentation. It also includes a DVD composed of events from the first world congress on the square of opposition held in June 2007 in Montreux, featuring some of the speeches and presentations of the participants, like the professors Pascal Engel, Laurence Horn, Terence Parsons, Jan Wolenski. Further, the DVD contains extracts of a square jazz show which was composed and presented for this occasion and extracts of the movie "The Square of Salome". The movie, which was produced for this event, is a remake of the famous biblical story using the square to display the relations between the main characters.

Introduction to Logical Theory (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback): P F Strawson Introduction to Logical Theory (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback)

New Rhetoric, The - A Treatise on Argumentation (Hardcover): Chaim Perelman, Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca New Rhetoric, The - A Treatise on Argumentation (Hardcover)
Chaim Perelman, Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca
R3,394 Discovery Miles 33 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The New Rhetoric is founded on the idea that since "argumentation aims at securing the adherence of those to whom it is addressed, it is, in its entirety, relative to the audience to be influenced," says Chaim Perelman and L. Olbrechts-Tyteca, and they rely, in particular, for their theory of argumentation on the twin concepts of universal and particular audiences: while every argument is directed to a specific individual or group, the orator decides what information and what approaches will achieve the greatest adherence according to an ideal audience. This ideal, Perelman explains, can be embodied, for example, "in God, in all reasonable and competent men, in the man deliberating or in an elite." Like particular audiences, then, the universal audience is never fixed or absolute but depends on the orator, the content and goals of the argument, and the particular audience to whom the argument is addressed. These considerations determine what information constitutes "facts" and "reasonableness" and thus help to determine the universal audience that, in turn, shapes the orator's approach. The adherence of an audience is also determined by the orator's use of values, a further key concept of the New Rhetoric. Perelman's treatment of value and his view of epideictic rhetoric sets his approach apart from that of the ancients and of Aristotle in particular. Aristotle's division of rhetoric into three genres-forensic, deliberative, and epideictic-is largely motivated by the judgments required for each: forensic or legal arguments require verdicts on past action, deliberative or political rhetoric seeks judgment on future action, and epideictic or ceremonial rhetoric concerns values associated with praise or blame and seeks no specific decisions. For Aristotle, the epideictic genre was of limited importance in the civic realm since it did not concern facts or policies. Perelman, in contrast, believes not only that epideictic rhetoric warrants more attention, but that the values normally limited to that genre are in fact central to all argumentation. "Epideictic oratory," Perelman argues, "has significant and important argumentation for strengthening the disposition toward action by increasing adherence to the values it lauds." These values are central to the persuasiveness of arguments in all rhetorical genres since the orator always attempts to "establish a sense of communion centered around particular values recognized by the audience."
