The safari design aesthetic has yoked hi-tech, high-end architecture with traditional low-tech African craft and fused them in a new genre of highly original, courageous and soulful – even sexy – architecture and interiors. This is design that, while rooted in Africa, possesses an international appeal that is beginning to influence aesthetic ideas the world over. Safari Style Africa showcases a selection of lodges where these elements of design dialogue beautifully with the environment.

The seventh edition of South African Human Resource Management: Theory and Practice has been thoroughly revised and updated. Our broader African context is accentuated even further, making it very clear that we need to find, craft and execute HRM strategies that suit our unique circumstances in South Africa and Africa more broadly. Africa is at an exciting yet critical juncture. This continent boasts almost a third of the world’s mineral wealth and two-thirds of its remaining arable land, and it is estimated that by the end of the current century about half of all young people on the planet will be in Africa. Our continent’s future success is therefore locked up in this yet-to-be-realised human resource dividend, and South African managers in our local organisations as well as elsewhere in Africa and the world must lead the charge in unlocking and fully developing it. This edition expands on the holistic approach to human resource management (HRM) that has been propagated since the first edition in 1998. The emphasis throughout the book is that specialist practitioners in HRM and all other managers need to partner in managing the complex challenges faced in relation to our human resources. Also included are the contemporary HR trends in the South African environment and the emerging unifying framework of the South African Board for People Practices’ (SABPP) National HR Management System Standard, developed in 2013. HRM is shown to extend beyond staff/personnel employed by organisations to include managing all aspects related to people doing work not only as employees, but in other capacities as well. Similarly, even though the most prominent organisational context can be regarded as business or private sector organisations, this new edition makes explicit and clear connections with HRM challenges and issues in public sector organisations. The book has a companion website that provides access to additional information, resources, case studies, and various questions and activities to facilitate active learning. The website is designed for a dual purpose: to enhance the learning experience of those who have bought the book and to assist those responsible for helping learners digest the wealth of learning material contained in this compendium on South African HRM.

Trust is the fuel for all of life. We are wired biologically, neurologically, emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically to trust. Trust is the currency that drives every relationship, beginning with the foundational bond between infants and their mothers, extending to the trust networks that undergird every human endeavor – art, science, commerce – and binding together every relationship we have ever had or ever will have. Nothing in our world works without trust. It is tempting to think that trust is simple, that we should be able to spot a lack of trustworthiness relatively easily. But we all have our stories about misplaced trust. We either missed clear or subtle warning signs or there just were not any warning signs to see. Everything looked good on the surface, and maybe it was. But we got burned anyway. And sometimes we struggle to earn and keep the trust of those around us when trust bonds fail to form or are broken. When trust breaks down, so does our ability to move forward. In Trust, Knowing When To Give It, When To Withhold It, How To Earn It And How To Fix It When It Gets Broken, Dr. Cloud explores the five foundational aspects of trust that must be present for any relationship to function successfully and helps us to understand how to implement them. He also guides us through the difficult process of repairing trust when it has been violated and broken, even when restoring trust feels impossible. Rich with wisdom drawn from decades of experience in clinical practice, business consulting and research, Trust is the ultimate resource for managing this most complex and fundamental of human bonds, allowing us to experience more fruitful and rewarding relationships in every area of our lives.

This paradigm shifting essay collection weaves the personal and political in an illuminating exploration of internationally acclaimed novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga’s complex relationship with race and gender. At once philosophical, intimate and urgent, Dangarmebga’s landmark essays address the profound cultural and political questions that underpin her novels for the first time. From her experience of life with a foster family in Dover and the difficulty of finding a publisher as a young Zimbabwean novelist, to the ways in which colonialism continues to disrupt the lives and minds of those subjugated by empire, Dangarembga writes to recenter marginalised voices. Black and Female offers a powerful vision toward re-membering – to use Toni Morrison’s word – those whose identities and experiences continue to be fractured by the intersections of history, race and gender.
Revolt is a provocative challenge to the prevailing wisdom about the rise of nationalism and populism today. With a vibrant and informed voice, Nadav Eyal illustrates how modern globalization is unsustainable. He contends that the collapse of the current world order is not so much about the imbalance between technological advances and social progress, or the breakdown of liberal democracy, as it is about a passion to upend and destroy power structures that have become hollow, corrupt, or simply unresponsive to urgent needs. Eyal illuminates the forces both benign and malignant that have so rapidly transformed our economic, political, and cultural realities, shedding light not only on the globalized revolution that has come to define our time but also on the counterrevolution waged by those globalization has marginalized and exploited. With a mixture of journalistic narrative, penetrating vignettes, and original analysis, Revolt shows that within the mainstream the left and right have much in common. Eyal shows how their stories feed our current state of unrest. More than just an analysis of the present, though, Revolt also takes a hard look at lessons from the past, from the Opium Wars in China to colonialist Haiti to the Marshall Plan. With these historical ties, Eyal shows that the roots of revolt have always been deep and strong. The current uprisings are no passing phenomenon—revolt is the new status quo.

Pepe Marais began his entrepreneurial journey as a newspaper delivery boy at the age of twelve. After finishing high school at the end of 1986 he spent two years in the army completing what was then compulsory national service. On his way home at the end of his service he had a chance encounter with a graphic artist which completely changed the course of his life. Pepe's latent talent for art was developed and honed at a Cape Town art school, where he finished top of his class each year, which in turn would lead him to discover his passion for advertising. After graduating, he and his partner Gareth Leck launched their enterprising Take-Away Advertising Agency and business success seemed a foregone conclusion. But some unwise business decisions and then the global recession of 2008 took their toll and, to make matters worse, Pepe's personal life began to disintegrate. However, at the lowest point of his life, he would discover a fundamental insight which became the foundation on which he would rebuild his life. It would also inspire the development of his Purpose for Business methodology and his deep interest in unlocking both human and Joe Public United business potential. While Growing Greatness contains many lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs, perhaps what is more important is the deep wisdom it offers. Through his growing awareness of what purpose means in both business and personal terms, Pepe points the way to growing your own greatness.
