Culture and the Cuban State - Participation, Recognition, and Dissonance under Communism (Hardcover): Yvon Grenier Culture and the Cuban State - Participation, Recognition, and Dissonance under Communism (Hardcover)
Yvon Grenier
R3,021 Discovery Miles 30 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Culture and the Cuban State examines the politics of culture in communist Cuba. It focuses on cultural policy, censorship, and the political participation of artists, writers and academics such as Tania Bruguera, Jesus Diaz, Rafael Hernandez, Kcho, Reynier Leyva Novo, Leonardo Padura, and Jose Toirac. The cultural field is important for the reproduction of the regime in place, given its pretense and ambition to be eternally "revolutionary" and to lead a genuine "cultural revolution". Cultural actors must be mobilized and handled with care, given their presumed disposition to speak their mind and to cherish their autonomy. This book argues that cultural actors also seek recognition by the main (for a long time the only) sponsor and patron of the art in Cuba: the "curator state". The "curator state" is also a "gatekeeper state," arbitrarily and selectively opening and closing the space for public expression and for access to foreign currencies and the global market. The time when everything was either mandatory or forbidden is over in Cuba. The regime seems to have learned from egregious mistakes that led to a massive exodus of artists, writers and academics. In a country where things change so everything could stay the same, the controlled opening in the cultural field, playing on the actors' ambition and fear, illuminates a broader phenomenon: the evolving rules of the political game in the longest standing dictatorship of the hemisphere.

Metromarxism - A Marxist Tale of the City (Hardcover): Andrew Merrifield Metromarxism - A Marxist Tale of the City (Hardcover)
Andrew Merrifield
R4,628 Discovery Miles 46 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This highly accessible account of Marxism and the city covers their relationship from the 1850s to the present through biographical chapters on eight towering figures in the Marxist tradition - Marx, Engels, Walter Benjamin, Henri Lefebvre, Guy Debord, Manuel Castells, David Harvey and Marshall Berman.
Each chapter combines interesting biographical anecdotes with a readable analysis of each individual's contribution to the evolving Marxist theory of the city. Merrifield highlights the dialectical nature of the modern city in both its industrial and post-industrial phases. Cities are the places where capital organizes itself and inequality is most intense, but also where the potential for progressive change is most real.

The White Terror - Antisemitic and Political Violence in Hungary, 1919-1921 (Hardcover): Bela Bodo The White Terror - Antisemitic and Political Violence in Hungary, 1919-1921 (Hardcover)
Bela Bodo
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The White Terror was a movement of right-wing militias that for two years actively tracked down, tortured, and murdered members of the Jewish community, as well as former supporters of the short-lived Council Republic in the years following World War I. It can be argued that this example of a programme of virulent antisemitism laid the foundations for Hungarian participation in the Holocaust. Given the rightward shift of Hungarian politics today, this book has a particular resonance in re-examining the social and historical context of the White Terror.

The Separation of the Party and the State - Political Leadership in Soviet and Post Soviet Phases (Hardcover): Vinayank N.... The Separation of the Party and the State - Political Leadership in Soviet and Post Soviet Phases (Hardcover)
Vinayank N. Srivastava
R4,044 Discovery Miles 40 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

First published in 1999, this volume is the first full length study of one of the most important political institutions of the erstwhile Soviet political system - the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). The originality of this work lies in its main argument that the central reform during Perestroika was that of the Party and the State - a reform which ultimately resulted in the CPSU and its institutions, the Central Committee being one of the most vital among them - firstly, surrendering the monopoly over political power and control over the instrumentalities of the State and secondly, systematically de-institutionalising and dismantling the formidable Soviet political system. The seeds of transformation and the shape of politico-economic and socio-cultural systems that emerged in successor States were laid down during the Soviet era - in particular during Perestroika itself. The continuity is, therefore, as striking as the change - if not more so.

North Korea under Communism - Report of an Envoy to Paradise (Hardcover): Cornell Erik North Korea under Communism - Report of an Envoy to Paradise (Hardcover)
Cornell Erik
R4,476 Discovery Miles 44 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

After the collapse of the Soviet world, North Korea alone has continued on the rigid communist way, in spite of its economic consequences leading the state beyond ruin to famine. What are the reasons behind this peculiar choice of direction? Why did the leaders in Pyongyang pursue a policy abandoned not only by the Soviet Union, but also by China and Vietnam?
The author of this book spent three years as head of the embassy of Sweden in Pyongyang. Until a few years ago, it was the only Western embassy in North Korea. His unique experiences are related with descriptions of day-to-day life and with analyses of economic, political and ideological conditions. A picture is drawn of a society and a political order that defy both human nature and common sense.

Alexander Anievas
R1,041 Discovery Miles 10 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Cataclysm 1914 brings together leftist scholars from a variety of fields to explore the many different aspects of the origins, trajectories and consequences of the First World War. The collection seeks to visualise the conflict and all its immediate consequences (such as the Bolshevik Revolution and ascendency of US hegemony) as a defining moment in 20th century world politics, rupturing and reconstituting the 'modern' epoch in its many instantiations. Appeals to general readers and those focused on Marxian theory and strategy and leftist histories of the war.

Medical Memories and Experiences in Postwar East Germany - Treatments of the Past (Hardcover): Markus Wahl Medical Memories and Experiences in Postwar East Germany - Treatments of the Past (Hardcover)
Markus Wahl
R4,471 Discovery Miles 44 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book draws on the example of the major cities of Leipzig and Dresden to illustrate continuity and change in public health in the German Democratic Republic. Based on archival work, it will demonstrate how members of the medical profession successfully manipulated their pre-1945 past in order to continue practising, leading to persistence in the social conception of medicine and disease after Communism took hold. This was particularly evident in attitudes towards and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and the pathology of deviant behaviour among young people.

Open Marxism 2 - Theory and Practice (Paperback, New Ed): Werner Bonefeld, Richard Gunn, Kosmas Psychopedis Open Marxism 2 - Theory and Practice (Paperback, New Ed)
Werner Bonefeld, Richard Gunn, Kosmas Psychopedis
R760 Discovery Miles 7 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this study, distinguished international contributors project an 'open' Marxism - a rejection of the determinism and positivism which characterise so much of contemporary left-wing thought. Topics covered in the two volumes include Marxism and political economy, historical materialism, dialectics, state theory, class, fetishism and the periodisation of capitalist development.

The Wasted Generation - Memoirs Of The Romanian Journey From Capitalism To Socialism And Back (Hardcover): Silviu Brucan The Wasted Generation - Memoirs Of The Romanian Journey From Capitalism To Socialism And Back (Hardcover)
Silviu Brucan
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

My generation in Eastern Europe was caught in the middle of two revolutions (1944 and 1989), which instead of moving history ahead pushed it backward. We thus at first made a U-turn-a tortuous one, to be sure-from underdeveloped capitalism to underdeveloped socialism, but because socialism and underdevelopment are strange bedfellows,we have since discovered we were on the wrong path and are trying now to return to where we started. The drama of that generation is what this book is about.

The Left in China - A Political Cartography (Paperback): Ralf Ruckus The Left in China - A Political Cartography (Paperback)
Ralf Ruckus
R497 Discovery Miles 4 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Tracing the history of left-wing, subversive and oppositional forces in the People's Republic of China over the last seventy years, Ralf Ruckus pulls back the curtain on Chinese politics. He looks at the labour strikes in the 1950s, the rebel uprising during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, the democracy movements in the 1970s and 1980s, the struggles of urban and migrant workers since the 1990s and 2000s, and women's forms of resistance until today. Each of these struggles inspired left-wing groups and movements that criticised or challenged the regime of the Chinese Communist Party, from Mao Zedong's rule to the regime under Xi Jinping. Is the country still socialist today, the Chinese Communist Party a left-wing organisation, and the leadership indeed Marxist? The book sorts out the confusion by presenting the fascinating history of social movements and left politics in the People's Republic up to the present day.

Rick Fawn, Stephen White
R1,489 Discovery Miles 14 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Russia's transition from communism holds great significance not only for that country but also for the wider world. This collection of essays examines the broad spectrum of Russia's transition since 1991 - considering not only the pattern of events but also what the changes have meant for Russians themselves, and for their future. Particular attention is given to political attitudes and foreign policy, to the changing status of women, to religion and censorship, and to the continuing war in Chechnya.

In Contempt - Defending Free Speech, Defeating HUAC (Paperback): Ed Yellin, Jean Fagan Yellin In Contempt - Defending Free Speech, Defeating HUAC (Paperback)
Ed Yellin, Jean Fagan Yellin
R603 Discovery Miles 6 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"YOU ARE HEREBY COMMANDED to be and appear before the Committee on Un-American Activities of the House of Representatives of the United States, or a duly appointed subcommittee thereof, on February 10 (Monday), 1958, at ten o'clock a.m. at City Council Chambers, City Hall, Gary, Indiana, then and there to testify touching matters of inquiry committed to said committee, and not to depart without leave of said committee." So began a decade of hardship for Ed and Jean Yellin and their three young children as the repressive weight of the U.S. government, caught up in the throes of McCarthyism, crashed down upon their careers, their daily household budget, and their relationships to colleagues, neighbors, and their country. In Contempt is a faithful, factual testament to the enduring quality of patriotic dissent in our evolving democracy-and a loving reconstruction of what it meant to be labeled "unAmerican" for defending the Constitution.

Democracy and Post-Communism - Political Change in the Post-Communist World (Hardcover): Graeme Gill Democracy and Post-Communism - Political Change in the Post-Communist World (Hardcover)
Graeme Gill
R4,476 Discovery Miles 44 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The collapse of communism was widely heralded as the dawn of democracy across the former Soviet region. However, the political outcome has been much less uniform. The post-communist states have developed political systems from democracy to dictatorship.
Using examples and empirical data collected from twenty-six former Soviet states, Graeme Gill provides a detailed comparative analysis of the core issues of regime change, the creation of civil society, economic reform and the changing nature of post-communism. Within these individual cases, it becomes clear that political outcomes have not been arbitrary, but directly reflect the circumstances surrounding the birth of independence.
Students of Comparative Politics, International Relations and Russian and Post-Soviet Studies should find this book essential reading.

Subject and Object - Frankfurt School Writings on Epistemology, Ontology, and Method (Hardcover): Ruth Groff Subject and Object - Frankfurt School Writings on Epistemology, Ontology, and Method (Hardcover)
Ruth Groff
R5,618 Discovery Miles 56 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Subject & Object is a thematic collection of classic works by Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, and Herbert Marcuse, designed to foreground the authors' philosophical concerns, especially in the areas of epistemology, ontology, and method. The volume, which includes lucid introductions to all of the selections, illustrates Frankfurt School approaches to questions such as the nature of reason; the limits of empiricism, pragmatism and Kantian transcendental idealism; the case for materialism; the difficulty of thinking counterfactually; and the ideological character of mainstream social science. Many of the pieces in the volume are otherwise out of print. Subject & Object will be a resource for social, political, and cultural theorists who may be less familiar with the philosophical aspects of the Frankfurt School, for analytic philosophers who may not have had previous exposure to their work at all, and for anyone wanting access to these seminal texts.

Aesthetic Marx (Hardcover): Samir Gandesha, Johan F. Hartle Aesthetic Marx (Hardcover)
Samir Gandesha, Johan F. Hartle
R4,249 Discovery Miles 42 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The whole of Marx's project confronts the narrow concerns of political philosophy by embedding it in social philosophy and a certain understanding of the aesthetic. From those of aesthetic production to the "poetry of the future" (as Marx writes in the Eighteenth Brumaire), from the radical modernism of bourgeois development to the very idea of association (which defined one of the main lines of tradition in the history of aesthetics), steady references to Dante, Shakespeare and Goethe, and the idea that bourgeois politics is nothing but a theatrical stage: the aesthetic has a prominent place in the constellation of Marx's thought. This book offers an original and challenging study of both Marx in the aesthetic, and the aesthetic in Marx. It differs from previous discussions of Marxist aesthetic theory as it understands the works of Marx themselves as contributions to thinking the aesthetic. This is an engagement with Marx's aesthetic that takes into account Marx's broader sense of the aesthetic, as identified by Eagleton and Buck-Morss - as a question of sense perception and the body. It explores this through questions of style and substance in Marx and extends it into contemporary questions of how this legacy can be perceived or directed analytically in the present. By situating Marx in contemporary art debates this volume speaks directly to lively interest today in the function of the aesthetic in accounts of emancipatory politics and is essential reading for researchers and academics across the fields of political philosophy, art theory, and Marxist scholarship.

Ecology Against Capitalism (Hardcover): John Bellamy Foster Ecology Against Capitalism (Hardcover)
John Bellamy Foster
R2,205 Discovery Miles 22 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years John Bellamy Foster has emerged as a leading theorist of the Marxist perspective on ecology. His seminal book Marx's Ecology (Monthly Review Press, 2000) discusses the place of ecological issues within the intellectual history of Marxism and on the philosophical foundations of a Marxist ecology, and has become a major point of reference in ecological debates. This historical and philosophical focus is now supplemented by more directly political engagement in his new book, Ecology against Capitalism. In a broad-ranging treatment of contemporary ecological politics, Foster deals with such issues as pollution, sustainable development, technological responses to environmental crisis, population growth, soil fertility, the preservation of ancient forests, and the "new economy" of the Internet age.

Foster's introduction sets out the unifying themes of these essays enabling the reader to draw from them a consolidated approach to a rapidly-expanding field of debate which is of critical importance in our times.

Within these debates on the politics of ecology, Foster's work develops an important and distinctive perspective. Where many of these debates assume a basic divergence of "red" and "green" issues, and are concerned with the exact terms of a trade-off between them, Foster argues that Marxismproperly understoodalready provides the framework within which ecological questions are best approached. This perspective is advanced here in accessible and concrete form, taking account of the major positions in contemporary ecological debate.
