Significantly revised and updated, this second edition of "Management for Engineers, Scientists and Technologists" is vital reading for all students of any of these subjects hoping to make it in the real world. Increasingly, students of engineering, science and technology subjects are finding that their success depends as much on general management skills and understanding operational systems as on their technical expertise. This book offers students that all- important firm foundation in management training. "Management for Engineers, Scientists and Technologists" offers a practical and accessible introduction to management and provides a comprehensive guide to the management tools used in managing people and other resources. Part 1 includes a series of chapters on management applications and concepts, starting with basic issues such as 'What is a business?' and 'What is management?', continuing through management of quality, materials and new product development and concluding with examples of successful companies who provide good models of management. Part 2 considers human resource management and communications, introduces tools and techniques for managing machines and materials, examines financial management, describes the procedures and tools of project management, analyses the supply system and the processes of inventory control, studies business planning and marketing, and concludes with a new chapter on the management of SMEs. The authors' significant experience in both teaching and industry provides valuable lessons in business management, and allows them to provide case studies with real insight.

This book introduces the fundamentals of financial mathematics. It begins with a discussion of simple and compound interest and then establishes the important concepts of effective and equivalent effective interest rates. Subsequent chapters discuss the applications of annuities to practical problems regarding the saving of money and repayment of loans. The notion of using net present value and internal rate of return to distinguish between two different investment opportunities is presented. The concluding chapters of the book take a brief look at the use of differential and integral calculus in financial mathematics. Each chapter includes numerous worked examples that are solved with the aid of a financial calculator where applicable.
The text emphasises four themes to support evidence-based management decision making: 1. Setting the statistical landscape in a management context 2. Interpretative decision making based on patterns revealed by exploratory data analyses 3. Statistical decision making guided by the test-based findings of inferential analyses 4. Predictive decision making using statistical modelling evidence. The thread that links them is the role of data analytics as a management decision-support tool. This fifth edition builds on the strengths of the fourth edition by: - Highlighting newer trends in statistical applications in management practice - Strengthening the Excel-based generation of statistical evidence using a custom-built software product, called X-Static - Enhancing the graphic visualisation of statistical evidence. Target market: - Undergraduate students of Management at universities (BCom, BAcc, etc) - Management diploma students working towards professional qualifications at institutions such as the IMM, CSSA, CIMA, IAC, etc. - Postgraduate students (MBA and PGDip) of Management at business schools.
The new 6th edition of Applied Combinatorics builds on the previous editions with more in depth analysis of computer systems in order to help develop proficiency in basic discrete math problem solving. As one of the most widely used book in combinatorial problems, this edition explains how to reason and model combinatorically while stressing the systematic analysis of different possibilities, exploration of the logical structure of a problem, and ingenuity. Although important uses of combinatorics in computer science, operations research, and finite probability are mentioned, these applications are often used solely for motivation. Numerical examples involving the same concepts use more interesting settings such as poker probabilities or logical games. This book is designed for use by students with a wide range of ability and maturity (sophomores through beginning graduate students). The stronger the students, the harder the exercises that can be assigned. The book can be used for one-quarter, two-quarter, or one-semester course depending on how much material is used.
Statistics and quantitative methods are brought to life for social science students in this tutorial course. ,P> This revised edition provides an overview of entry- and intermediate-level statistics, and the material on the accompanying website provides extensive practice. This book is a self contained course in electromagnetic theory suitable for senior physics and electrical engineering students as well as graduate students whose past has not prepared them well for books such as Jackson or Landau and Lifschitz. The text is liberally sprinkled with worked examples illustrating the application of the theory to various physical problems. This new edition features improved accuracy and readability, added and further clarified examples, plus additional sections on Schwarz-Christoffel mappings. Making the book more self sufficient, an appendix on orthogonal function expansions and the derivation of Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials as well as derivation of their generating functions are each included. The number of exercises has also been increased by 45 over the previous edition. This book stresses the unity of electromagnetic theory with electric and magnetic fields developed in parallel. SI units are used throughout and considerable use is made of tensor notation and the Levi-Cevita symbol. To more closely display the parallelism, extensive use is made of the scalar magnetic potential particularly in dealing with the Laplace and Poisson equation. 85 worked problems illustrate the theory. Conformal mappings are dealt with in some detail. Relevant mathematical material is provided in appendices.
