The book entitled "Schistosomiasis: Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Treatment", published by Nova Science Publishers Inc. presents a very interesting overview on this tropical parasitic disease in the post-genomic era. The book is a collection of 8 chapters written by world-renown health professionals and researchers, highly active in the field. The mainly targeted public is MDs specialising in Tropical Medicine as well as experienced Researchers and Professionals who are faced with the challenges of this ancient threat to human health. This book is conceptually divided into two sections: (1) a broad recollection of the up-to-date state of the comprehension of Schistosomiasis, including its interplay with the human host; (2) a focused survey on specific field studies, presenting the actual challenges of the disease. The first part, composed of 4 chapters, is preparatory to a better understanding of the case studies in the second part. Special attention has been put on three selected at risk categories of people: pre-school aged children, women, and travellers/migrants; the first two living in endemic areas, and the latter in non-endemic regions. In between these two sections is the chapter on zoonotic schistosomiasis, a neglected research area that shows the dangerous role of infected livestock in maintaining the disease in endemic countries.

An understanding of taxonomy, vector biology and ecology in the geographic regions of each country is essential so that a programme of control measures can be implemented. This book focuses on the ticks found in India and will be invaluable for health authorities, tick biologists and veterinary researchers. It covers taxonomic identification, medical importance and bionomics of haemaphysaline ticks.

Anaerobic Parasitic Protozoa - Genomics and Molecular Biology (Hardcover): C. Graham Clark, Patricia J. Johnson, Rodney D. Adam Anaerobic Parasitic Protozoa - Genomics and Molecular Biology (Hardcover)
C. Graham Clark, Patricia J. Johnson, Rodney D. Adam
R5,376 Discovery Miles 53 760 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Anaerobic parasitic protozoa cause medically and economically important diseases - such as dysentery, sexually transmitted infections, and gastroenteritis - that annually affect millions of people worldwide. Recently, the genomes of the three key anaerobic protozoa - Trichomonas, Giardia, and Entamoeba - have been determined. The availability of these genomic data and the use of post-genomic analyses have provided fascinating new insights into the biology of these important parasites. They will be important for the design of novel anti-protozoan drugs and the development of effective vaccines. In this book, internationally acclaimed researchers critically review the most important aspects of research on anaerobic parasitic protozoa, providing the first coherent picture of their genomics and molecular biology since the publication of the genomes. Chapters are written from a molecular and genomic perspective and contain speculative models upon which future research efforts can be based. Topics include: the genomes of Entamoeba histolytica, Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia, and other diplomonads; the cytoskeletons of Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Trichomonas vaginalis; genomic analyses and manipulation of gene expression in Entamoeba histolytica; nuclear and chromosomal structure and replication in Giardia; and the mitochondrion-like organelles of a fourth anaerobe, Blastocystis. The book is essential reading for all researchers working with these protozoa and related organisms and with eukaryotic model organisms. It is recommended for all parasitology laboratories.

Pest and Vector Control (Paperback, New): H.F.Van Emden, M.W. Service Pest and Vector Control (Paperback, New)
H.F.Van Emden, M.W. Service
R2,168 Discovery Miles 21 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As ravagers of crops and carriers of diseases affecting plants, humans and animals, insects present a challenge to a growing human population. In Pest and Vector Control, H.F. van Emden and Mike Service describe the available options for meeting this challenge, discussing their relative advantages, disadvantages and future potential. Methods such as chemical and biological control, host tolerance and resistance are discussed, intergrating--often for the first time--information and experience from the agricultural and medical/veterinary fields. Chemical control is seen as a major component of insect control, both now and in the future, but this is balanced with an extensive account of associated problems, especially the development of pesticide-tolerant populations. The authors are leading authorities in their respective fields and two of the best known entomologists of their generation.

The Malaria Capers - Tales of Parasites and People (Paperback, New Ed): Robert S. Desowitz The Malaria Capers - Tales of Parasites and People (Paperback, New Ed)
Robert S. Desowitz
R572 Discovery Miles 5 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Reads like a murder mystery. . . . [Desowitz] writes with uncommon lucidity and verse, leaving the reader with a vivid understanding of malaria and other tropical diseases, and the ways in which culture, climate and politics have affected their spread and containment."—New York Times

Why, Robert S. Desowitz asks, has biotechnical research on malaria produced so little when it had promised so much? An expert in tropical diseases, Desowtiz searches for answers in this provocative book.

"Like such eminent science writers as Stephen Jay Gould and Lewis Thomas, Mr. Desowitz manages to make the basic principles of his subject immediately comprehensible to the general reader. He has also succeeded in giving us a profound appreciation of the ways in which scientific and medical knowledge advances, through hypothesis, error and experiment, through serendipity, dedication, and perseverance."—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Like a novelist, [Desowitz] draws the reader into the human tragedy of disease. . . . Rich in historical-medical detective stories."—Betty Ann Kevles, Los Angeles Times

"A gripping account of how a one-celled protozoan has triumphed over modern science."—Wall Street Journal

"Just as it was not necessary to be an astrophysicist to feel the grandeur and scope of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, it is not necessary to be a parasitologist or specialist in tropical medicine to relate to the drama, tragedy and even romance of Desowitz's fascinating and provocative story. . . . Interesting and important."—New England Journal of Medicine

Ecology and Physiology of Parasites - A Symposium (Paperback): A. Murray Fallis Ecology and Physiology of Parasites - A Symposium (Paperback)
A. Murray Fallis
R749 Discovery Miles 7 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Increasing wisdom and ingenuity are required if we are to master our environment and cope with the myriad of organisms that affect our existence. Not the least of these organisms are the parasites and pathogens which can be found in all animals. The ecological implications of parasitism are obvious, and the interrelationships among different organisms within the same host are fascinating, but more knowledge and understanding are needed. The symposium are held to stimulate discussion of the significance of ecological problems presented by parasites and to develop means of attacking some of these problems. The diversity of parasitism from protozoa to anthropods was emphasized and the speakers and topics were selected to interest those in various biological disciplines and professions. Organized by the Department of Parasitology in the School of Hygiene of the University of Toronto, and held at Toronto in February 1970, the symposium was an unqualified success. The enthusiastic interest, indicated by the attendance of over three hundred people from seven countries, and numerous requests for copies of the proceedings led to the publication in this volume of the twelve papers presented at the symposium. The opening remarks of the leader of the discussion which follow each paper have been included and a complete bibliography is provided for each topic. The contributors are leading specialists in their fields; their papers present the results of the most recent research and assemble and review the scattered literature on each topic. The text is illustrated throughout with diagrams and photographs. Parasitism and associated phenomena are excellent examples of problems requiring the interdisciplinary approach taken by the symposium. The results of such an approach are useful in a wide variety of disciplines: microbiology, invertebrate zoology, entomology, and tropical medicine, as well as parasitology.
