Genetically-engineered mouse models for cancer research have become invaluable tools for studying cancer biology and evaluating novel therapeutic approaches. This book is conceptually divided into two sections: (1) a broad recollection of the up-to-date state of the comprehension of Schistosomiasis, including its interplay with the human host; (2) a focused survey on specific field studies, presenting the actual challenges of the disease. The first part, composed of 4 chapters, is preparatory to a better understanding of the case studies in the second part. Special attention has been put on three selected at risk categories of people: pre-school aged children, women, and travellers/migrants; the first two living in endemic areas, and the latter in non-endemic regions. In between these two sections is the chapter on zoonotic schistosomiasis, a neglected research area that shows the dangerous role of infected livestock in maintaining the disease in endemic countries.
Ticks are obligate blood sucking arthropods found in almost every region of the world. They are very important vectors of human and animal diseases. Tick-borne protozoan diseases such as Theileriasis and Babesiosis cause mortality and morbidity in domestic animals in many countries including India. Increasing wisdom and ingenuity are required if we are to master our environment and cope with the myriad of organisms that affect our existence. Not the least of these organisms are the parasites and pathogens which can be found in all animals. The ecological implications of parasitism are obvious, and the interrelationships among different organisms within the same host are fascinating, but more knowledge and understanding are needed. The symposium are held to stimulate discussion of the significance of ecological problems presented by parasites and to develop means of attacking some of these problems. The diversity of parasitism from protozoa to anthropods was emphasized and the speakers and topics were selected to interest those in various biological disciplines and professions. Organized by the Department of Parasitology in the School of Hygiene of the University of Toronto, and held at Toronto in February 1970, the symposium was an unqualified success. The enthusiastic interest, indicated by the attendance of over three hundred people from seven countries, and numerous requests for copies of the proceedings led to the publication in this volume of the twelve papers presented at the symposium. The opening remarks of the leader of the discussion which follow each paper have been included and a complete bibliography is provided for each topic. The contributors are leading specialists in their fields; their papers present the results of the most recent research and assemble and review the scattered literature on each topic. The text is illustrated throughout with diagrams and photographs. Human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness is caused by infection with the morphologically indistinguishable subspecies Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (in East and Southern Africa) and Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (in West and Central Africa). The disease is presently almost under control and less than 4000 cases are currently reported. In both, T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense infection, after the injection of infective metacyclic trypanosomes with tsetse fly vector saliva, the parasites establish in the skin, differentiate to the bloodstream stage and spread via the local draining lymph node into the vascular system. In this book, Chapter One presents an overview of the current epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment options.
