Memory and Miscarriages of Justice (Hardcover): Mark L. Howe, Lauren M. Knott, Martin A. Conway Memory and Miscarriages of Justice (Hardcover)
Mark L. Howe, Lauren M. Knott, Martin A. Conway
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Memory is often the primary evidence in the courtroom, yet unfortunately this evidence may not be fit for purpose. This is because memory is both fallible and malleable; it is possible to forget and also to falsely remember things which never happened. The legal system has been slow to adapt to scientific findings about memory even though such findings have implications for the use of memory as evidence, not only in the case of eyewitness testimony, but also for how jurors, barristers, and judges weigh evidence. Memory and Miscarriages of Justice provides an authoritative look at the role of memory in law and highlights the common misunderstandings surrounding it while bringing the modern scientific understanding of memory to the forefront. Drawing on the latest research, this book examines cases where memory has played a role in miscarriages of justice and makes recommendations from the science of memory to support the future of memory evidence in the legal system. Appealing to undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology and law, memory experts, and legal professionals, this book provides an insightful and global view of the use of memory within the legal system.

False and Distorted Memories (Hardcover): Robert A. Nash, James Ost False and Distorted Memories (Hardcover)
Robert A. Nash, James Ost
R4,765 Discovery Miles 47 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our memories shape how we think about the past, how we plan for the future, and how we think about ourselves. Yet our memories are also constantly being reinvented: we often remember our experiences differently from how they truly happened, and can even remember experiences that never happened at all. False and Distorted Memories provides an overview of recent and ongoing developments in the science of false memory. World-leading researchers unpick questions about flawed recollections, discussing issues as varied as the reliability of highly emotional memories, why we sometimes begin to remember fictional experiences that we have deliberately fabricated, and what happens when we stop believing our memories. Each chapter demonstrates how memory science has furthered our understanding of these important questions, by exploring theoretical ideas and psychological research methods that underpin their investigations. Edited by Robert Nash and James Ost, this volume offers an international and up-to-date perspective on false and distorted memories. The volume also draws attention to the broad range of real-life contexts in which such distortions might arise and their potential consequences. False and Distorted Memories illustrates the ease with which memory can be contaminated and the power of the resulting memory errors, providing an integral text for researchers and students interested in the psychology of memory.

Developmental Perspectives on Metaphor - A Special Issue of metaphor and Symbolic Activity (Paperback): Ellen Winner Developmental Perspectives on Metaphor - A Special Issue of metaphor and Symbolic Activity (Paperback)
Ellen Winner
R1,610 Discovery Miles 16 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research on the development of metaphor abilities in children can be dated back as far as 1960, with Asch and Nerlove's pioneering study, which concluded that children were unable to understand metaphors until middle or even late childhood. However, the study of metaphor in children did not take off until the 1970s; research continued to show metaphor as a relatively late-developing skill, based on children's inability to paraphrase correctly metaphoric sentences presented out of any situational or narrative context. In the past decade, research into the development of figurative language has broadened considerably in scope. Efforts have been underway to demonstrate the cognitive underpinnings of the ability to make sense of figurative language and to demonstrate the role of metaphor and its cousin, analogy, in the development of cognition. Metaphor is now considered to be a central aspect of language and thought and thus a crucial variable in cognitive development. The articles in this issue support the claim that no longer can any theory of language acquisition afford to ignore how children are able to recognize the distinction between what is said and what is meant and how they are able to grasp what is meant when people say things they do not mean.

Memories, Thoughts, and Emotions - Essays in Honor of George Mandler (Paperback): William Kessen, Andrew Ortony, Fergus Craik Memories, Thoughts, and Emotions - Essays in Honor of George Mandler (Paperback)
William Kessen, Andrew Ortony, Fergus Craik
R1,625 Discovery Miles 16 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For the past forty years, the ideas and findings of George Mandler -- and George Mandler himself -- have been highly influential throughout the field of experimental psychology. Not only has he helped to advance the study of cognition and emotion in many ways, but he also offered assistance and encouragement to numerous young researchers who may expand on the knowledge acquired thus far. The editors of this festschrift feel that one of the greatest strengths of Mandler's work is the blend of European theorizing and American empiricism. This volume contains contributions from friends and colleagues who have been influenced in one way or another by this accomplished psychologist.

Memory - Phenomena, Experiment and Theory (Hardcover): Alan Parkin Memory - Phenomena, Experiment and Theory (Hardcover)
Alan Parkin
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1993, this title provided a lively but comprehensive account of experimental and theoretical approaches to the study of human memory at the time. Throughout, the book integrates experimental findings with neuropsychological data and describes a wide range of fascinating memory phenomena. A central theme of the book concerns the organization of memory. The idea that memory is composed of a series of structures is contrasted with process accounts of how memory works. There is a substantial account of the explicit/implicit distinction in memory research - an area that had been the centre of much recent experimentation and debate. The book was intended primarily as an intermediate text for undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students but its interdisciplinary approach and accessible style will also make it of interest to others, such as neurologists, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, for whom some understanding of memory research is required.

Short-term Visual Information Forgetting (PLE: Memory) (Paperback): A.H.C.Van Der Heijden Short-term Visual Information Forgetting (PLE: Memory) (Paperback)
A.H.C.Van Der Heijden
R793 Discovery Miles 7 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When this title was originally published in 1981, the information processing approach to perception and memory was dominant in experimental psychology, and the research reported here had major implications for future development. After exploring the shortcomings of earlier work in this field, the author develops a new model which he shows to be capable of accounting for a variety of experimental data connected with human information processing, visual perception and attention. The central theme which is discussed is how we select relevant and discard irrelevant information. The basic assumption is that all incoming information is identified, that is, it reaches and activates the appropriate lexical entries. A piece of identified information is described as a unit consisting of three distinguishable codes: a visual code, a lexical or semantic code and a motor or action code. Identified information decays fast, so selective attention operates by selecting those units which have to be saved from this rapid decay. In a sense, therefore, the human information processor is described as struggling against forgetting.

Levels of Processing 30 Years On - A Special Issue of Memory (Paperback): Martin A. Conway Levels of Processing 30 Years On - A Special Issue of Memory (Paperback)
Martin A. Conway
R809 Discovery Miles 8 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This special issue of the journal Memory celebrates thirty years of research into the levels of processing (LoP) framework. Evaluations are provided by leading researchers, including the original proposers, Craik and Lockhart. In addition new findings are reported and extensions of, as well as alternatives to, LoP are described. Overall the collected papers show that much remains to recommend the processing approach to memory, and fruitful theorizing with empirical consequences are readily derivable from the LoP framework.

Memory and Mind - A Festschrift for Gordon H. Bower (Paperback): Mark A. Gluck, John R. Anderson, Stephen M. Kosslyn Memory and Mind - A Festschrift for Gordon H. Bower (Paperback)
Mark A. Gluck, John R. Anderson, Stephen M. Kosslyn
R884 Discovery Miles 8 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A comprehensive overview of the current state of research on memory and mind, this book captures the career and influence of Gordon H. Bower (as told by 22 of his students and colleagues), showing how Bower's research and mentoring of students has broadly and deeply affected modern research. In addition to many personal reminisces about Bower's research and graduate training in the 1950s through 1990s, this book illustrates how Bower's early research and ideas lay the groundwork for much of modern psychological studies of memory, expertise, psychological assessment, and mental imagery.

Experimental Psychology Its Scope and Method: Volume IV (Psychology Revivals) - Learning and Memory (Hardcover): Paul Fraisse,... Experimental Psychology Its Scope and Method: Volume IV (Psychology Revivals) - Learning and Memory (Hardcover)
Paul Fraisse, Jean Piaget; Jean-Francois le Ny, Gerard de Montpellier, Genevieve Oleron, …
R5,486 Discovery Miles 54 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in English in 1970, the first chapter of the book is concerned with conditioned reactions. Jean Francois le Ny discusses ways in which conditioned reactions are acquired and the laws governing their function.

The second contributor, Gerard de Montpellier, looks at different types of learning. The varying processes involved in both animal and human learning are considered, together with some general factors and mechanisms of learning. The third section of the book by Genevieve Oleron deals with the phenomenon of transfer. Among the topics included are the determination of transfer effects, transfer in perceptual-motor activities and explanations of transfer. In the final chapter, Cesar Flores examines memory, forgetting and reminiscence. The discussion covers methodology, the influence of material, the role of practice, the part played by attitudes, motivation and emotive reactions in the memory process, as well as the importance of organisation of memory tasks on the part of the subject."

Human Learning and Memory - Advances in Theory and Applications: The 4th Tsukuba International Conference on Memory... Human Learning and Memory - Advances in Theory and Applications: The 4th Tsukuba International Conference on Memory (Paperback)
Chizuko Izawa, Nobuo Ohta
R1,789 Discovery Miles 17 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text celebrates the fourth Tsukuba International Conference on Memory (Tic4) held in January of 2003, by setting forth productive directions for memory researchers and human learning theorists around the world. It presents fascinating perspectives on progress, and future prospects for models, theories, and hypotheses authors developed, including several new, never published experimental results. Contributors include the winner of the 1997 U.S. Congressional Medal of Science--William K. Estes--who graced the text by penning the forward. The three full day presentations of Tic4 included presentations by 225 experts, represented by 73 universities from countries on four continents: Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Human Learning and Memory presents 11 chapters by invited speakers, and its appendices include titles of all papers accepted for Tic4 presentations, as well as a background introduction to Japanese cultures, relevant to Tic4 experiences. This book appeals to scholars, researchers, and teachers in the fields of human learning and memory, cognition, language learning, and educational psychology (theoretical, empirical, and applied dimensions). It can also be used as a textbook for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in these domains, either as required or recommended reading.

Contested Pasts - The Politics of Memory (Paperback): Katharine Hodgkin, Susannah Radstone Contested Pasts - The Politics of Memory (Paperback)
Katharine Hodgkin, Susannah Radstone
R1,775 Discovery Miles 17 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This inter-disciplinary volume demonstrates, from a range of perspectives, the complex cultural work and struggles over meaning that lie at the heart of what we call memory.

In the last decade, a focus on memory in the human sciences has encouraged new approaches to the study of the past. As the humanities and social sciences have put into question their own claims to objectivity, authority and universality, memory has appeared to offer a way of engaging with knowledge of the past as inevitably partial, subjective and local. At the same time, memory and memorial practices have become sites of contestation, and the politics of memory are increasingly prominent.

Duality of the Mind - A Bottom-up Approach Toward Cognition (Paperback): Ron Sun Duality of the Mind - A Bottom-up Approach Toward Cognition (Paperback)
Ron Sun
R1,787 Discovery Miles 17 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a condensation of a large body of work concerning human learning carried out over a period of more than five years by Dr. Sun and his collaborators. In a nutshell, this work is concerned with a broad framework for studying human cognition based on a new approach that is characterized by its focus on the dichotomy of, and the interaction between, explicit and implicit cognition and a computational model that implements this framework. In this work, a broad, generic computational model was developed that instantiates Dr. Sun's framework and enables the testing of his theoretical approach in a variety of ways. With this model, simulation results were matched with data of human cognition in a variety of different domains. Formal (mathematical and computational) analyses were also carried out to further explore the model and its numerous implementational details. Furthermore, this book addresses some of the most significant theoretical issues, such as symbol grounding, intentionality, social cognition, consciousness, and other theoretical issues in relation to the framework. The general framework and the model developed generate interesting insights into these theoretical issues.

The Development of the Mediated Mind - Sociocultural Context and Cognitive Development (Paperback): Joan M. Lucariello, Judith... The Development of the Mediated Mind - Sociocultural Context and Cognitive Development (Paperback)
Joan M. Lucariello, Judith A. Hudson, Robyn Fivush, Patricia J. Bauer
R1,784 Discovery Miles 17 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is a festschrift for Katherine Nelson, an NYU professor who was a pioneer in infant perception and memory. The "mediated mind" is a term coined by Dr. Nelson and it refers to how cognitive development is mediated by the sociocultural context, including language and social interaction. The impact of Nelson's views on the sociocultural basis of cognition and her functionalist perspective on cognitive development are evident in the collection of chapters in this book. The contributors--all leaders in the field of cognitive development--examine ways in which cognition is embedded in everyday, meaningful activities and the role of social context and cultural symbol symptoms, such as language and text influence children's developing concepts and thought. The concept of the mediated mind is examined from a variety of perspectives, including research in concept development, memory development, language learning, the development of literacy, narrative analysis, and children's theory of mind. The significant contribution of this volume is that it addresses all aspects of the mediated mind. Memory--both autobiographical and event-semantic--theory of mind, mental representation, temporality, narrative, and metalinguistic awareness comprise the chapter topics. The breadth of topics represented is a tribute to the impact Nelson's vision has on many developmental "domains." The contributors acknowledge and honor her work. Her theory and research paved the way for the advances in understanding a mediated mind that are evident and that will continue to shape notions of how the human mind develops and evolves within a social, interactive world.

Life-Span Maintenance of Knowledge (Paperback): Harry P. Bahrick, Lynda K. Hall, Melinda K. Baker Life-Span Maintenance of Knowledge (Paperback)
Harry P. Bahrick, Lynda K. Hall, Melinda K. Baker
R2,044 Discovery Miles 20 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume describes how well we maintain the knowledge we acquire throughout life. Research traditionally focuses on memory for events that are retained over short time periods that can be accommodated in experiments. This book, by contrast, uniquely describes the evolution of methods suitable for investigating memory of complex knowledge acquired over several years and retained during the entire life-span. The methods substitute statistical for experimental controls, and the investigations involve several hundred participants whose memory is tested up to 50 years after they acquired the knowledge in question. The book covers educational content, such as mathematics and foreign languages; knowledge acquired incidentally, such as the streets and buildings of the cities in which we live; and knowledge acquired through the media. Previously unpublished research on age-related access to knowledge is included. The analyses are based on the accessibility/availability ratio, a metric presented for the first time. This metric allows comparisons of the portion of available knowledge that can be recalled as a function of age, education and other individual differences, and as a function of the domain of knowledge in question. The ratio can be used to evaluate methods of instruction and methods of studying. It can also be used to evaluate memory development and to diagnose memory pathology. The volume will be of interest to researchers in human memory, developmental psychologists, gerontologists in academic and applied settings, and educators.

The Development of Autobiographical Memory (Paperback): Hans J Markowitsch, Harald Welzer The Development of Autobiographical Memory (Paperback)
Hans J Markowitsch, Harald Welzer
R1,107 Discovery Miles 11 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Autobiographical memory constitutes an essential part of our personality, giving us the ability to distinguish ourselves as an individual with a past, present and future. This book reveals how the development of a conscious self, an integrated personality and an autobiographical memory are all intertwined, highlighting the parallel development of the brain, memory and personality. Focusing strongly on developmental aspects of memory and integrating evolutionary and anthropological perspectives, areas of discussion include: why non-human animals lack autobiographical memory development of the speech areas in the brain prenatal and transnatal development of memory autobiographical memory in young children. This book offers a unique approach through combining both neuroscientfic and social scientific viewpoints, and as such will be of great interest to all those wanting to broaden their knowledge of the development and acquisition of memory and the conscious self.

The Tip of the Tongue State (Hardcover): Alan S. Brown The Tip of the Tongue State (Hardcover)
Alan S. Brown
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together the body of empirical findings and theoretical interpretations of the tip of the tongue (TOT) experience - when a well-known or familiar word cannot immediately be recalled. Although research has been published on TOTs for over a century, the experience retains its fascination for both cognitive and linguistic researchers. After a review of various research procedures used to study TOTs, the book offers a summary of attempts to manipulate this rare cognitive experience through cue and prime procedures. Various aspects of the inaccessible target word are frequently available - such as first letter and syllable number - even in the absence of actual retrieval, and the book explores the implications of these bits of target-word information for mechanisms for word storage and retrieval. It also examines: what characteristics of a word make it potentially more vulnerable to a TOT; why words related to the target word (called "interlopers") often come to mind; the recovery process, when the momentarily-inaccessible word is recovered shortly after the TOT is first experienced; and efforts to evaluate individual differences in the likelihood to experience TOTs.

Episodic Memory and Healthy Ageing - A Special Issue of Memory (Hardcover, New): Chris Moulin, Moshe Naveh-Benjamin, Celine... Episodic Memory and Healthy Ageing - A Special Issue of Memory (Hardcover, New)
Chris Moulin, Moshe Naveh-Benjamin, Celine Souchay
R4,071 Discovery Miles 40 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A characteristic feature of the aging process is a decline in episodic memory, that form of memory related to a particular time and place in an individual s personal history. This volume gathers together articles by leaders in the field exploring aging and episodic memory in healthy adults. These articles provide interesting and novel findings on different aspects of episodic memory, including patterns of decline and sparing, heterogeneity in older adults memory performance, and cognitive and non-cognitive factors that potentially improve older adults memory performance. This volume presents a state of the art account of episodic memory function in older adults.

Pieces of Light - The new science of memory (Paperback, Main): Charles Fernyhough Pieces of Light - The new science of memory (Paperback, Main)
Charles Fernyhough 1
R335 Discovery Miles 3 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shortlisted for the Royal Society Winton Prize 2013 and the 2013 Best Book of Ideas Prize. Memory is an essential part of who we are. But what are memories, and how are they created? A new consensus is emerging among cognitive scientists: rather than possessing a particular memory from our past, like a snapshot, we construct it anew each time we are called upon to remember. Remembering is an act of narrative as much as it is the product of a neurological process. Pieces of Light illuminates this theory through a collection of human stories, each illustrating a facet of memory's complex synergy of cognitive and neurological functions. Drawing on case studies, personal experience and the latest research, Charles Fernyhough delves into the memories of the very young and very old, and explores how amnesia and trauma can affect how we view the past. Exquisitely written and meticulously researched, Pieces of Light blends science and literature, the ordinary and the extraordinary, to illuminate the way we remember and forget.
