History's Beauties - Women and the National Portrait Gallery, 1856-1900 (Hardcover, New Ed): Lara Perry History's Beauties - Women and the National Portrait Gallery, 1856-1900 (Hardcover, New Ed)
Lara Perry
R4,729 Discovery Miles 47 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The 'beauties' - women of note - who were welcomed to the National Portrait Gallery's early collection were those whose lives and portraits were recognized as significant to the 'civil, ecclesiastical and literary history of the nation'. This brief was interpreted to include figures as diverse as the devout Lady Margaret Beaufort, and the entertaining Lady Emma Hamilton. History's Beauties, the first detailed study of this collection, maps a culture of femininity that reframes the Victorian fascination with women's domestic and sentimental presence by locating it within a Parliament-centred 'national' culture. Including an essay on the Gallery's Trustees, the book traces the translation of their governors' culture to a public institution through discussions of three themes in the National Portrait Gallery's collection of women's portraits: portraits of the Royal family and the cult of legitimacy in antiquities and in national identity; the educated woman as model of domestic and national cultivation; and finally the role of female beauty in defining social and artistic power in nineteenth-century Britain. The first monograph study of gender in a major museum, History's Beauties engages themes of gender, national identity, class cultures, and aesthetics in Victorian England to interpret the National Portrait Gallery's fascinating collection.

Cabinets for the Curious - Looking Back at Early English Museums (Hardcover, New Ed): Ken Arnold Cabinets for the Curious - Looking Back at Early English Museums (Hardcover, New Ed)
Ken Arnold
R4,579 Discovery Miles 45 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The last few years has, within museums, witnessed nothing short of a revolution. Worried that the very institution was itself in danger of becoming a dusty, forgotten, culturally irrelevant exhibit, vigorous efforts have been made to reshape the museum mission. Fearing that history was coming to be ignored by modern society, many institutions have instead marketed a de-intellectualised heritage, overly relying on computer technology to captivate a contemporary audience. The theme of this work is that we can do much to reassess the rationale that inspires contemporary collections through a study of seventeenth century museums. England's first museums were quite literally wonderful; founded that is on the disciplined application of the faculty of wonder. The type of wonder employed was not that post-Romantic idea of disbelief, but rather an active form of curiosity developed during the Renaissance, particularly by the individuals who set about gathering objects and founding museums to further their enquiries. The argument put forward in this book is that this museological practice of using objects actually to create, as well as disseminate knowledge makes just as much sense today as it did in the seventeenth century and, further, that the best way of reinvigorating contemporary museums, is to return to that form of wonder. By taking such a comparative approach, this book works both as a scholarly historical text, and as an historically informed analysis of the key issues facing today's museums. As such, it will prove essential reading both for historians of collecting and museums, and for anyone interested in the philosophies of modern museum management.

Interpreting Agriculture at Museums and Historic Sites (Paperback): Debra A. Reid Interpreting Agriculture at Museums and Historic Sites (Paperback)
Debra A. Reid
R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Interpreting Agriculture in Museums and Historic Sites orients readers to major themes in agriculture and techniques in education and interpretation that can help you develop humanities-based public programming that enhance agricultural literacy. Case studies illustrate the ways that local research can help you link your history organization to compelling local, national (even international) stories focused on the multidisciplinary topic. That ordinary plow, pitch fork, and butter paddle can provide the tangible evidence of the story worth telling, even if the farm land has disappeared into subdivisions and agriculture seems as remote as the nineteenth century. Other topics include discussion of alliances between rural tourism and community-supported agriculture, farmland conservation and stewardship, heritage breed and seed preservation efforts, and antique tractor clubs. Any of these can become indispensable partners to history organizations searching for a new interpretive theme to explore and new partners to engage.

Doing Archaeology - A Cultural Resource Management Perspective (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Thomas F. King Doing Archaeology - A Cultural Resource Management Perspective (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Thomas F. King
R4,550 Discovery Miles 45 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

What is archaeology, and why should we do it? Tom King, arguably the best-known heritage management consultant in the United States, answers the basic question of every introductory student from the unique perspective of one who actively uses archaeology for cultural resource management. Designed as a supplement for introduction to archaeology classes, this brief and breezy book runs the reader through the major principles of archaeology, using examples from the author's own field work and that of others. Brief biographies of other CRM archaeologists help students envision career paths they might emulate. The bookends with an exploration of some of the thorny problems facing the contemporary archaeologist to help foster class discussion. Preventive Conservation for Historic House Museums (Hardcover): Jane Merritt, Julie A. Reilly Preventive Conservation for Historic House Museums (Hardcover)
Jane Merritt, Julie A. Reilly
R3,759 Discovery Miles 37 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Preventive Conservation for Historic House Museums is a primer on the preventive care practices that these unique sites need to slow the rate of deterioration and prevent damage and wear to the property and its collections. It proposes a collaborative approach to preservation planning that is based on interdisciplinary research, critical thinking, and observation rather than rote maintenance schedules and everyday residential cleaning practices. The authors recommend that sites have documents and plans in place that direct the intellectual and physical control of the collections and site. The intellectual controls include administrative and management policies and procedures; the physical controls include security and safety precautions, routine maintenance and cleaning practices among others. Historic house administrators, staff, board members, and volunteers will find this volume indispensable. Professionals who deal with historic sites from the museum administrator or curator, to architect, to engineer, as well as students pursuing studies in the field of preservation and conservation will also find this a valuable reference. This volume promotes a pro-active approach to preservation planning for historic sites and their collections.

Critical Approaches to Heritage for Development (Paperback): Charlotte Cross, John D. Giblin Critical Approaches to Heritage for Development (Paperback)
Charlotte Cross, John D. Giblin
R1,260 Discovery Miles 12 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In contrast to a significant recent volume in this area (Labadi, ed. 2019 see below), this volume does not focus only on international aid, but instead considers a range of different actors with diverse approaches to and understandings of 'development'. This volume does not only engage with formalised heritage, such as museums, monuments, and memorials. Contributions consider a range of ostensibly past-focused practices and interventions that may not be explicitly referred to as 'heritage' by the actors concerned. This marks a contrast with significant earlier work in the field (e.g. Basu and Modest eds., 2014 see below). Contributors to this volume include both scholars from a range of fields and practitioners, working in museums, UNESCO, and local government. This will help to ensure the content is engaged with contemporary practice as well as theory, and the relevance of the volume to students and practitioners. This volume will not comprise a set of disparate case studies. Rather, authors will critically review how heritage informs the pursuit of development within a broad general field, illustrating this with examples drawn from their own research. This will ensure consistency in focus across the contributions and the forum style conclusion will allow leading scholars from both Critical Heritage Studies and Development Studies to identify the key thematic points commonalities emerging from ostensibly diverse areas of scholarship and practice.

R.B. Halbertsma
R4,562 Discovery Miles 45 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Today, the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden is internationally known for its outstanding archaeological collections. Yet its origins lie in an insignificant assortment of artefacts used for study by Leiden University. How did this transformation come about?
Ruurd Halbertsma has delved into the archives to show that the appointment of Caspar Reuvens as Professor of Archaeology in 1818 was the crucial turning point. He tells the dramatic story of Reuvens' struggle to establish the museum, with battles against rival scholars, red tape and the Dutch attitude of neglect towards archaeological monuments. This book throws new light on the process of creating a national museum, and the difficulties of convincing society of the value of the past.

The Art of Minorities - Cultural Representation in Museums of the Middle East and North Africa (Paperback): Virginie Rey The Art of Minorities - Cultural Representation in Museums of the Middle East and North Africa (Paperback)
Virginie Rey
R834 R781 Discovery Miles 7 810 Save R53 (6%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

How are issues related to identity representation negotiated in Middle Eastern and North African museums? Can museums provide a suitable canvas for minorities to express their voice? Can narratives change and stereotypes be broken and, if so, what kind of identities are being deployed?Against the backdrop of the revolutionary upheavals that have shaken the region in recent years, the contributors to this volume interrogate a range of case studies from across the region examining how museums engage inclusion, diversity and the politics of minority identities. They bring to the fore the region's diversity and sketch a 'museology of disaster' in which minoritised political subjects regain visibility.

Making History - Makerspaces for Museums and Historic Sites (Paperback): Tim Betz Making History - Makerspaces for Museums and Historic Sites (Paperback)
Tim Betz
R953 Discovery Miles 9 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

While first person interpretation and historic crafts have long been part of the museum world, current movements in the maker movement in libraries and schools have occurred mostly outside of the museum world. Instead, Makerspace in Museums: Hands-On History in Museums and Historic Sites shows the importance of the Maker Movement for museums and historic sites, and presents a roadmap to building, planning, researching, and using a makerspace alongside more traditional museum programming. It calls for a revitalization of living history, which can be done through makerspaces and the maker movement. Highlights include: oWhy museums and makerspaces are a natural fit together oWays to organize and create a makerspace in a museum of any budget oCreating a makerspace and culture of making that is inclusive and for the entirety of the community oStrategies for researching historic making techniques and adapting them to the modern world oCreating meaningful makerspace-centered programming The processes and methods explored in this book will help produce a sustainable makerspace that will help the museum or historic site that adopts it reach new audiences, creating growth and new museums stakeholders. Likewise, through calling for a recalibration of living history through the language of the makerspace, this project calls for new approaches to living history. Thus, it is a call for a disruption to the status quo and a push towards sustainable and meaningful living history.

Museums in the Digital Age - Changing Meanings of Place, Community, and Culture (Paperback): Susana Smith Bautista Museums in the Digital Age - Changing Meanings of Place, Community, and Culture (Paperback)
Susana Smith Bautista
R1,540 Discovery Miles 15 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Museums in the Digital Age: Changing Meanings of Place, Community, and Culture showcases how the use of technology in museums should be understood as factors directly related to the museums' notion of community, local culture, and place, whether these places are in mid-America, urban metropolises, or ethnically diverse and underserved communities. Here, museum expert Susana Smith Bautista brings more than twenty years of experience in cultural institutes in Los Angeles, New York, and Greece to propose a social understanding of why museums should be adopting technology, and how it should be adapted based on their particular missions, communities, and places. This book is timely because we are in the midst of the digital age, which is rapidly changing due to rapidly changing developments in technology and society as well, with social adaptations of technology. Theory is always racing to catch up with practice in the digital age, but theory remains a critical - and often neglected - component to accompany the practical application of technology in museums. In order to illustrate these points, the book presents five case studies of the most technologically advanced art museums in the United States today: *The Indianapolis Museum of Art *The Walker Art Center *The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art *The Museum of Modern Art *The Brooklyn Museum Each case study ends with a Lessons Learned section to bring these points home. While the case studies focus on museums in the United States, and also on art museums, this book is relevant to all types of museums and to museums all over the world, as they equally face the challenge of incorporating technology into their institutions. Although these case studies are all well-established and well-endowed museums, Bautista reveals valuable insight into the difficulties they face and the questions they are asking which are relevant to even the smallest museum or community cultural center.
