Topics and features: includes review questions at the end of each chapter; presents a survey of systems for real-time interactive control of automatic expressive music performance, including simulated conducting systems; examines two systems in detail, YQX and IMAP, each providing an example of a very different approach; introduces techniques for synthesizing expressive non-piano performances; addresses the challenges found in polyphonic music expression, from a statistical modelling point of view; discusses the automated analysis of musical structure, and the evaluation of CSEMPs; describes the emerging field of embodied expressive musical performance, devoted to building robots that can expressively perform music with traditional instruments.

Musical Robots and Interactive Multimodal Systems (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Jorge Solis, Kia Ng Musical Robots and Interactive Multimodal Systems (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Jorge Solis, Kia Ng
R2,958 Discovery Miles 29 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Musical robotics is a multi- and trans-disciplinary research area involving a wide range of different domains that contribute to its development, including: computer science, multimodal interfaces and processing, artificial intelligence, electronics, robotics, mechatronics and more. A musical robot requires many different complex systems to work together; integrating musical representation, techniques, expressions, detailed analysis and controls, for both playing and listening. The development of interactive multimodal systems provides advancements which enable enhanced human-machine interaction and novel possibilities for embodied robotic platforms. This volume is focused on this highly exciting interdisciplinary field. This book consists of 14 chapters highlighting different aspects of musical activities and interactions, discussing cutting edge research related to interactive multimodal systems and their integration with robots to further enhance musical understanding, interpretation, performance, education and enjoyment. It is dichotomized into two sections: Section I focuses on understanding elements of musical performance and expression while Section II concentrates on musical robots and automated instruments. Musical Robots and Interactive Multimodal Systems provides an introduction and foundation for researchers, students and practitioners to key achievements and current research trends on interactive multimodal systems and musical robotics.

The Digital Score - Musicianship, Creativity and Innovation (Paperback): Craig Vear The Digital Score - Musicianship, Creativity and Innovation (Paperback)
Craig Vear
R1,225 Discovery Miles 12 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Digital technology is transforming the musical score as a broad array of innovative score systems have become available to musicians. From attempts to mimic the print score, to animated and graphical scores, to artificial intelligence-based options, digital scoring affects the musical process by opening up new possibilities for dynamic interaction between the performer and the music, changing how we understand the boundaries between composition, score, improvisation and performance. The Digital Score: Musicianship, Creativity and Innovation offers a guide into this new landscape, reflecting on what these changes mean for music-making from both theoretical and applied perspectives. Drawing on findings from over a decade's worth of practice-based experimentation in the field, author Craig Vear builds a framework for understanding how digital scores create meaning. He considers the interactions between affect, embodiment and digital scores, offering the first comprehensive and critical consideration of an exciting field with no agreed-upon borders. Featuring insights from interviews with over fifty musicians and composers from across four continents, this book is a valuable resource for music researchers and practitioners alike.

The Rubato Composer Music Software - Component-Based Implementation of a Functorial Concept Architecture (Hardcover, 2009 ed.):... The Rubato Composer Music Software - Component-Based Implementation of a Functorial Concept Architecture (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Guerino Mazzola; Gerard Milmeister; Contributions by Florian Thalmann
R3,156 Discovery Miles 31 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Both modern mathematical music theory and computer science are strongly influenced by the theory of categories and functors. One outcome of this research is the data format of denotators, which is based on set-valued presheaves over the category of modules and diaffine homomorphisms. The functorial approach of denotators deals with generalized points in the form of arrows and allows the construction of a universal concept architecture. This architecture is ideal for handling all aspects of music, especially for the analysis and composition of highly abstract musical works.

This book presents an introduction to the theory of module categories and the theory of denotators, as well as the design of a software system, called Rubato Composer, which is an implementation of the category-theoretic concept framework. The application is written in portable Java and relies on plug-in components, so-called rubettes, which may be combined in data flow networks for the generation and manipulation of denotators.

The Rubato Composer system is open to arbitrary extension and is freely available under the GPL license. It allows the developer to build specialized rubettes for tasks that are of interest to composers, who in turn combine them to create music. It equally serves music theorists, who use them to extract information from and manipulate musical structures. They may even develop new theories by experimenting with the many parameters that are at their disposal thanks to the increased flexibility of the functorial concept architecture.

Two contributed chapters by Guerino Mazzola and Florian Thalmann illustrate the application of the theory as well as the software in the development of compositional tools and the creation of a musical work with the help of the Rubato framework.

Mary Caton Lingold, Darren Mueller, Whitney Trettien
R2,551 Discovery Miles 25 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The digital turn has created new opportunities for scholars across disciplines to use sound in their scholarship. This volume's contributors provide a blueprint for making sound central to research, teaching, and dissemination. They show how digital sound studies has the potential to transform silent, text-centric cultures of communication in the humanities into rich, multisensory experiences that are more inclusive of diverse knowledges and abilities. Drawing on multiple disciplines-including rhetoric and composition, performance studies, anthropology, history, and information science-the contributors to Digital Sound Studies bring digital humanities and sound studies into productive conversation while probing the assumptions behind the use of digital tools and technologies in academic life. In so doing, they explore how sonic experience might transform our scholarly networks, writing processes, research methodologies, pedagogies, and knowledges of the archive. As they demonstrate, incorporating sound into scholarship is thus not only feasible but urgently necessary. Contributors. Myron M. Beasley, Regina N.
