Es geht um den sozialen Stand, den die Frau sowohl als Akt-Fotografin als auch als Akt-Modell im Verlaufe der Zeit in der Gesellschaft erreicht hat. Das Interesse von Maria Theresia Bitterli richtet sich auf die kleine soziale Lebenswelt" dieser Frauen, auf ihre Teilnahmen in der Geschichte des Aktes, sowie ihre Ansichten, Verhaltensweisen und Strategien, die sie im Zusammenhang mit dem Akt entwickelt oder in ihrem lebensgeschichtlichen Verlauf bereits angewandt haben. Der Beschluss, diese Frauen in ihrer Lebenswelt zu erfassen, wurde bekraftigt, als Maria Theresia Bitterli feststellte, dass es an spezifischer Literatur uber Aktfotografinnen und Aktmodellen weitgehend fehlt. Es ist schon einiges zum Thema der Frau in der Fotografie geschrieben worden, aber was die Aktfotografie betrifft, gibt es noch vieles zu entdecken und zu erganzen. Um die Alltagswirklichkeit, die Welt des Handelns und den damit verknupften Sinn der verschiedenen Frauen aus ihrer Perspektive und in ihrer Sprache zu erfassen, kann nur eine moglichst offene Forschungsmethode dienlich sein, die durch Subjektivitat gekennzeichnet wird. Daher wahlt sie als Erhebungsverfahren das autobiographische Interview, welches als inzwischen anerkanntes Forschungsverfahren bereits vielfaltig angewandt worden ist.

Dazu werden zwei weitere Fotografen, welche in Exkursen kurz behandelt werden, um ihren Bezug zu Chargesheimers Arbeiten deutlich zu machen, unterstutzend zum fotogeschichtlichen Hintergrund hinzugezogen. Zur Nachdrucklichen Betonung der Wichtigkeit des Menschenbildes Chargesheimers fur seine Art des Fotografierens erfolgt anschliessend eine Betrachtung desselben aus soziologischer Sicht. Jedoch haben besonders Brandts Fotomontagen und Foto-Text-Collagen einen engen Bezug zu ihrer gestalterischen Tatigkeit. Eine Auswahl dieser Arbeiten wird hier vorgestellt und einer kunstwissenschaftlichen Analyse unterzogen. Dabei stellt sich vor allem die Frage, wie sich Brandt als Frau in der Gesellschaft selbst verortet. Die Position der Kunstlerin als weibliches Bauhaus- und Werkstattmitglied wird ebenso reflektiert wie ihr Konflikt zwischen traditioneller und moderner Frauenrolle. Den Beginn dieser Arbeit sollen eine kurze Darstellung der Geschichte des Roadmovies und die des amerikanischen Western machen. Es soll uberpruft werden in wieweit Wim Wenders auf formale und inhaltliche Elemente des Western zuruckgreift. Um dieser Frage auf den Grund gehen zu konnen, sollen an einem Szenenvergleich zwischen Paris, Texas" und John Fords The Seachers" eventuelle Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede herausgearbeitet werden. Dass die Wahl des Vergleichswerk auf einen Western von John Ford fiel, liegt zum einen daran, dass in einigen Arbeiten uber Paris, Texas bereits Vergleiche zu John Ford gezogen wurden und zum anderen, dass Wim Wenders nie einen Hehl daraus gemacht hat, von John Ford inspiriert worden zu sein. Wenders, der zu den Regisseuren des Neuen Deutschen Films gehort, ist wohl neben R.W. Fassbinder als einer der am starksten vom amerikanischen Kino beeinflussten Kunstler einzuordnen. An Hand des Vergleiches der jeweiligen Anfangs- und Endszenen mochte ich aufzeigen das Wenders: Paris, Texas" sich starker an der bildasthetische Komposition orientiert als an einem inhaltlichen Motiv. Selbstverstandlich ist die Frage nach inhaltlichen Parallelen schnell geklart, doch mochte ich diese Frage auf einer abstrakteren Ebene behandeln und untersuchen ob es sich bei Wenders nicht vielleicht um eine modernisierte Behandlung des klassischen Westernstoffes handeln konnte, in der die Frage nach einer immer noch existierenden Frontier" behandelt wird. Jahrhundert, 32 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In den fruhen neunziger Jahren veroffentlichte der 1968 geborene Wolfgang Tillmans erste Fotografien in Zeitschriften wie dem Londoner i-D Magazine oder dem deutschen Spex-Magazin. Auch heute noch erscheinen regelmassig Fotos von ihm in Zeitschriften. Durch die Omniprasenz des Mediums Zeitschrift waren und sind seine Bilder einem grossen Publikum zuganglich. Seine ersten Fotografien stammen aus der Clubszene, zeigen zum Beispiel feiernde Jugendliche auf der Loveparade. Es sind Bilder aus einer Wirklichkeit, an der Wolfgang Tillmans selber teilgenommen hat. Sie zeichnen sich durch eine Schnappschuss-Asthetik aus, die sich in der Fotografie am Anfang der neunziger Jahre entwickelte, und die folgende Fotogeneration stark gepragt hat. Tillmans selber brachten sie den Titel eines Chronisten seiner Generation" ein. Ubersehen wurde bei dieser Klassifizierung die bewusste Inszenierung der meisten seiner Bilder. Zudem beschrankt sich sein Oeuvre eben nicht nur auf Portrats von Menschen aus seiner Generation. Im Jahr 2000 erhielt Wolfgang Tillmans den Turner-Preis. In der Munchen Installation von Wolfgang Tillmans in der Pinakothek der Moderne werden viele divergente Fotografien raumlich zu einem Ganzen verknupft. Die Frage, die sich beim Betrachten der Installation stellt, ist, welche Erzahlinhalte hier, in den Einzelbildern, vor allem aber im Konnex des Bildverbundes, vermittelt werden sollen. Auf Grund der fragmentarischen Zusammensetzung der Installation muss man sich sogar fragen, ob hier uberhaupt von einer Erzahlung gesprochen werden kann. This book is an exploratory adventure to defamiliarize calligraphy, especially Persian Nastaliq calligraphic letterforms, and to look beyond the tradition that has always considered calligraphy as pursuant to and subordinate to linguistic practices. Calligraphy can be considered a visual communicative system with different means of meaning-making or as a medium through which meaning is made and expression is conveyed via a complex grammar. This study looks at calligraphy as a systematic means in the field of visual communication, rather than as a one-dimensional and ad hoc means of providing visual beauty and aesthetic enjoyment. Revolving around different insights of multimodal social semiotics, the volume relies on the findings of a corpus study of Persian Nastaliq calligraphy. The research emphasizes the way in which letterforms, regardless of conventions in language, are applied as graphically meaningful forms that convey individual distinct meanings. This volume on Persian Nastaliq calligraphy will be inspirational to visual artists, designers, calligraphers, writers, linguists, and visual communicators. Scrapbook makers documented their feelings about momentous public events such as living through the Civil War, mediated through the newspapers. African Americans and women's rights activists collected, concentrated, and critiqued accounts from a press that they did not control to create "unwritten histories" in books they wrote with scissors. Whether scrapbook makers pasted their clippings into blank books, sermon collections, or the pre-gummed scrapbook that Mark Twain invented, they claimed ownership of their reading. They created their own democratic archives.
Writing with Scissors argues that people have long had a strong personal relationship to media. Like newspaper editors who enthusiastically "scissorized" and reprinted attractive items from other newspapers, scrapbook makers passed their reading along to family and community. This book explains how their scrapbooks underlie our present-day ways of thinking about information, news, and what we do with it.

Max Liebermann (1847-1935)-a co-founder of the Berlin Secession and President of the Akademie der Kunste for many years-was one of the most important artists of his generation. In addition to his impressive painting oeuvre, Liebermann's graphic prints also assume an important role: over 600 motifs as etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts are found today in museum and private collections around the world. This catalogue provides an introduction to Liebermann's graphic prints based on selected works from the collection of the Max Liebermann Society Berlin. It also presents common printmaking techniques and provides a detailed examination of the development of the graphic prints by the most signifi cant representative of Impressionism. The focus is thus on the history of the collecting and exhibiting of his print graphic works as well as the research on these works.

A star of minimalist electronica and sound art, Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966) focuses on the building blocks of sound and aural minutiae, often deploying frequencies at the very edges of human hearing-sound that, as he puts it, "the listener becomes aware of only upon its disappearance." His albums "+/-" (1997) and "Matrix" (2001) spread this soundworld of sine waves and ambient glitchery to a wider audience; since then, he has exhibited and collaborated (notably with Carsten Nicolai) across the world. A homage to Musique Concrete pioneer Pierre Schaeffer's "Solfege de l'objet sonore," "Dataphonics "began as a monthly broadcast on France culture's Atelier de Creation Radiophonique, in which Ikeda created a highly physical auditory experience based on the idea of binary-logic data made audible, "to materialize the invisible domain of 'totally pure digital data.'" This book and CD includes spreads of graphic scores, codes, symbols and the composition itself, recomposed from the ten segments in which it was originally conceived.

Textures of Mourning addresses this question by examining engrossing literary and visual portrayals of death and its aftermath from The Tale of Genji and its adaptations. Contending that the work of mourning unfolds through interwoven practices of reading, writing, painting, and public exhibition, Reginald Jackson charts how mourning spurs artistic composition, triggers visceral responses, and seduces spectators in both premodern and contemporary Japan. Textures of Mourning delineates the intimate relationship between mourning and reading at three historical tipping points: the height of imperial power in the early eleventh century, when the literary masterwork The Tale of Genji (1008) was written; the collapse of imperial hegemony in the late-twelfth century, when Genji's most famous handscroll adaptation was composed (1150); and the post-bubble recessionary context in which those handscrolls were refashioned as the "Resurrected Genji Handscrolls" (2006). As material objects wrought at comparable moments of social upheaval, these texts become vehicles through which to mourn perished ideals of vitality, prosperity, and belonging. Textures of Mourning is the first full-length manuscript in English to investigate these texts' complex relationship across eras. By analyzing dozens of sumptuous images, the book pursues mortality's progression over four sections-"Dying," "Decomposing," "Mourning," and "Resurrecting"-each of which contextualizes factual and fictional accounts of reckoning with death to discern the mechanics of mourning's labor. Close readings of ostensibly "blank" works-from unprinted pages to silent music-that point to a new understanding of media. In No Medium, Craig Dworkin looks at works that are blank, erased, clear, or silent, writing critically and substantively about works for which there would seem to be not only nothing to see but nothing to say. Examined closely, these ostensibly contentless works of art, literature, and music point to a new understanding of media and the limits of the artistic object. Dworkin considers works predicated on blank sheets of paper, from a fictional collection of poems in Jean Cocteau's Orphee to the actual publication of a ream of typing paper as a book of poetry; he compares Robert Rauschenberg's Erased De Kooning Drawing to the artist Nick Thurston's erased copy of Maurice Blanchot's The Space of Literature (in which only Thurston's marginalia were visible); and he scrutinizes the sexual politics of photographic representation and the implications of obscured or obliterated subjects of photographs. Reexamining the famous case of John Cage's 4'33", Dworkin links Cage's composition to Rauschenberg's White Paintings, Ken Friedman's Zen for Record (and Nam June Paik's Zen for Film), and other works, offering also a "guide to further listening" that surveys more than 100 scores and recordings of "silent" music. Dworkin argues that we should understand media not as blank, base things but as social events, and that there is no medium, understood in isolation, but only and always a plurality of media: interpretive activities taking place in socially inscribed space.

Graffitecture is an exploration of what happens when graffiti, a highly innovative, wholly original art form rooted in urban culture, both clashes and commingles with the built environment. Photographer and Graffitecture editor Doug Fogelson invited more than 40 prolific Chicago graffiti artists to manipulate over 60 of his photographs. The images depict interiors and exteriors of diverse, high-end spaces such as homes, hotels, office buildings, and stores (as well some of the more traditional places where graffiti occurs). In doing so artists were asked, What would YOU do here?
The Chicago based artists (include provocative figures such as the X-Men, Jeff Zimmerman, Chris Silva, Fact, Gusher, Michael Genovese, Sketcherone, Merdok and many others) manipulated the prints any way they saw fit. The results range from a pen-and-ink subway train riding through an office building lobby to a colorful, futuristic mural splashed on the screen at an empty home movie theater.
Graffitecture also examines graffiti's artistic and cultural significance through four essays written by Illinois-based professors and artists. John Jennings, a graphic design and urban studies professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, ponders mainstream society's appropriation of graffiti's unique typography. Bridgette R. McCullough, an art historian, Manet scholar, and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, compares modern-day graffiti to abstract art. From the 1960s until 2000, John Evans made a daily collage from scraps found on the streets of New York. Often whimsical and ironic, these combinations of packing labels, personal notes, photographs, business cards, ticket stubs, and other bits of ephemera encompass the bits and pieces of daily life.
