Psychoanalysis and Paediatrics - Key Psychoanalytic Concepts with Sixteen Clinical Observations of Children (Paperback):... Psychoanalysis and Paediatrics - Key Psychoanalytic Concepts with Sixteen Clinical Observations of Children (Paperback)
Francoise Dolto
R1,225 Discovery Miles 12 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is Francoise Dolto s 1939 medical thesis and is dedicated to medical practitioners, paediatricians, and parents without prior knowledge of psychoanalysis. Francoise Dolto s aim was to sensitize people to the unconscious dimensions of many problems in children. She demonstrates here, through sixteen case studies, how often children s difficulties at school and at home be they behavioral or due to impaired learning abilities are the expression of psychological issues linked with their developing sexuality and castration anxiety, and result in physical symptoms such as enuresis and encopresis.Dolto points out that the awareness of the self and self-responsibility often develops for young people in families in which the parents do not know how to listen or even more importantly cannot be listened to with trust. There is also a summary of Freud s theories of the different stages of the evolution of the drives, as well as the central developmental role played by the castration complex, castration anxiety, and the Oedipus Complex."

Kids Caught in the Psychiatric Maelstrom - How Pathological Labels and "Therapeutic" Drugs Hurt Children and Families... Kids Caught in the Psychiatric Maelstrom - How Pathological Labels and "Therapeutic" Drugs Hurt Children and Families (Hardcover, New)
Elizabeth E. Root MSW, MS Ed; Foreword by Robert Whitaker
R1,683 Discovery Miles 16 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a warning that American children are receiving increased chemical treatment from psychiatrists and provides a primer on how to improve the emotional health of kids without drugs. "Maelstrom" is an apt metaphor for the inexorable deterioration many children experience inside the mental health system. Kids Caught in the Psychiatric Maelstrom: How Pathological Labels and "Therapeutic" Drugs Hurt Children and Families challenges current treatment practices and addresses the critically important issue of excessive prescribing of psychiatric medications to children. This encyclopedic work reveals "inside the system" information, emphasizing the theoretical divide at the root of the controversy over diagnosis and treatment. It explains how the 1990s, "decade of the brain" replaced talk therapy with biochemical treatments, leading to the hegemony of the pharmaceutical industry—and subsequently the massive drugging of children. Author Elizabeth E. Root details common diagnoses and treatments, explaining up-to-date brain research, with some surprising interpretations, and noting dangerous national precedents to mental screening. Finally, she illuminates pathways toward solutions and healthier families, sharing nonpsychiatric explanations for the nation's increase of troubled children and the rationale and research supporting non-drug, alternative approaches to childhood distress.

Handbook on the Neuropsychology of Epilepsy (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): William B Barr, Chris Morrison Handbook on the Neuropsychology of Epilepsy (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
William B Barr, Chris Morrison
R4,573 Discovery Miles 45 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Integrates basic research and practical clinical information on the neuropsychology of epilepsy under one cover. Provides inside knowledge on how neuropsychological assessments are performed and evaluated. A comprehensive reference that will serve as a clinical resource for working with epilepsy patients. Epilepsy is a prevalent condition affecting approximately 1% of the general population. Its behavioral effects on cognition and memory can be as debilitating as the physical aspects caused by ongoing seizures. This book is intended primarily for clinical neuropsychologists who encounter patients with epilepsy, either through employment in academic medical centers or in general practice. The book is of particular value to those working in a comprehensive epilepsy center, as the volume provides extensive coverage of the many clinical procedures performed in that setting. Procedures reviewed in this volume include neuropsychological testing, the Wada procedures, and brain mapping. Chapters include descriptions of the purpose of these procedures, reviews of the recent literature, clinical vignettes, in addition to concrete recommendations on how to actually conduct the procedures. Many chapters provide examples of test forms and stimuli useful for conducting some of the procedures reviewed in this book. Neurologists and pediatricians will also find this book to be helpful, as many medical practitioners consider the activities of clinical neuropsychologists working in their settings to be somewhat mysterious. This book makes the details of neuropsychological practice in an epilepsy setting more accessible than what has been present in prior literature. Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy - Making the Conscious Unconscious (Paperback, 3rd edition): Peter Blake Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy - Making the Conscious Unconscious (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Peter Blake
R1,444 Discovery Miles 14 440 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In this new edition Blake gives a personal account of his professional experience of working with children and adolescents over the last 45 years. Providing a wonderful integration of the conceptual and the practical, this book clarifies complex theory while giving practical advice for clinicians through a nuts and bolts description of how to interview parents, emotionally assess a child and adolescent, set up a consulting room and conduct a therapy session. The addition of chapter summaries, questions and suggested further readings provides a valuable structure to those in child and adolescent training programmes. The author's experience, gained from public and private work, is vividly described with the use of clinical examples to illustrate his thinking and way of working. This third edition highlights his evolution from a more traditional epistemological (knowing) approach, with its emphasis on interpretation and insight, to a more ontological (being) framework. He explores a more intuitive and unconscious way of working and argues this is more developmentally appropriate to children and adolescents. His accessible writing style transports the reader into his clinical world: a world full of fascinating stories of children talking through their play; of adolescents exploring who they are through their discussions about music, films, sport and computer games; of helping parents to understand and thoughtfully manage their child's emotional struggles. This new edition, an amalgam of theoretical orientations (Kleinian, Bionian, Winnicottian, relational, non-linear and neurological), draws from recent developments, both in theory and technique. It will be of immense value to psychotherapists, psychoanalysts and all those involved in the treatment of children's mental health.

Large-Scale Brain Systems and Neuropsychological Testing - An Effort to Move Forward (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Leonard F.... Large-Scale Brain Systems and Neuropsychological Testing - An Effort to Move Forward (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Leonard F. Koziol, Paul Beljan, Kate Bree, John Mather, Lauren Barker
R2,771 Discovery Miles 27 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This leading-edge volume offers a new framework for neuropsychological testing rooted in the current evidence base on large-scale brain system interactions. Expert coverage brings traditional discrete areas of cognitive functioning (e.g., attention, memory) in line with highly nuanced relationships between cortical and subcortical processing. The new findings point to more accurate and targeted testing, as authors expand on the judicious addition of nonstandardized methods to core diagnostic tools and the underused capacity of neuropsychological testing to assess social behavior and personality. The book's emphasis on cognition in context gives practitioners better understanding of assessment and evaluation, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for individuals as well as significant improvements in the field. This innovative reference: Reframes cognitive functioning in light of current data on brain interconnectivity. Critiques current methods of neuropsychological test interpretation. Reviews known, useful interpretive methodologies within a new context. Features instructive case examples emphasizing accurate historical and test data. Revisits the strengths and limitations of the bell curve construct. Examines the interpretive significance of pathognomonic signs. Details strategies for making neuropsychological evaluations more clinically relevant. Large-Scale Brain Systems and Neuropsychological Testing combines current findings, clinical sense, and common sense to ground neuropsychologists, school psychologists, child psychologists, and clinical social workers in the effective assessment of real-world functioning.

The Neurology of Neuroblastoma - Neuroblastoma as a Neurobiological Disease (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Nina Felice Schor The Neurology of Neuroblastoma - Neuroblastoma as a Neurobiological Disease (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Nina Felice Schor
R2,928 Discovery Miles 29 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Neuroblastoma is the single most common solid tumor of childhood. Although children with small primary neuroblastomas alone are almost always cured by surgery, 65% of children with neuroblastoma already have large bulky tumors or metastatic disease by the time of initial diagnosis. For these children, the 5-year survival rate is only somewhere between 5% and 20% with therapies including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and bone marrow transplantation. Dr Schor outlines a new approach to these tumors in order to make a difference for these children. There is much information to support the notion that neuroblastomas represent a developmental aberration of the nervous system, rather than a de novo abnormality in a previously normal cell. While the remote, paraneoplastic effects of neuroblastoma are often the purview of the child neurologist, the neoplasm itself has been viewed and approached therapeutically in much the same manner as all other solid tumors, as the purview of the pediatric oncologist. This work takes the view that approaching neuroblastoma rather as a disorder of nervous system development offers new therapeutic possibilities for this common tumor of childhood.

Applied Theatre in Paediatrics - Stories, Children and Synergies of Emotions (Paperback): Persephone Sextou Applied Theatre in Paediatrics - Stories, Children and Synergies of Emotions (Paperback)
Persephone Sextou
R1,160 Discovery Miles 11 600 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book explores applied theatre practice for children in environments of illness and cure and how it can powerfully normalise children's hospitalisation experience. It is an essential tool for making meaning of children's illness, putting it into a fictional context and developing better control of their clinical experiences. It can be central to raising the standards of care and quality of life during illness. Taken from the author's research and participatory bedside theatre practice in hospitals before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, this book demonstrates new learning about aesthetics, ethics, emotions, stories, puppetry, digital arts and research methodologies about children's health and wellbeing. It provides a selection of ten unique stories told by children inspired by applied theatre practice in paediatrics, cardiac, oncology, neurosurgery, burns units and complex and intensive care wards. Stories aid in understanding the language of children's pain for a better assessment and management of pain by healthcare professionals through the arts. It analyses synergistic theatre performance in 'stitched lands' between challenging realities and safe fictionalities. This book enables artists to develop new ways of thinking and contributes to further improvements in the provision of education and reflective learning in the field. It also addresses the emotional labour of the artist in healthcare and makes recommendations for balanced training to prevent emotional exhaustion. Designed for artists, healthcare professionals, therapists, play specialists and teachers who work with children in healthcare, this text aims to help many people find creative ways of making a positive difference in sick children's lives. It is a book for those who love and care for children.

Hiram E. Fitzgerald, Barry M. Lester, Michael W. Yogman
R3,046 Discovery Miles 30 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Volume I of Theory and Research in Behavioral Pediatrics focused on issues of early human development, with special emphasis given to assessment of the preterm infant and to factors inftuencing the organization of the caregiver infant relationship. Chapters in Volume 2 cover a broader range of topics and encompass a wider age span. Chapter I provides a historical review of the relationship between developmental psychology and pediatrics. The authors, Barbara R. Tinsley and Ross D. Parke, discuss differences between behavioral pediatrics and pediatric psychology and note that interdiscipli nary collaboration in research and application has increased steadily in re cent years. However, if similar collaborative efforts are to occur in education and training of pediatricians and developmental psychologists, it will be necessary to determine just what each discipline hopes to gain from such collaborative efforts. Tinsley and Parke report the results of anational survey designed to determine the areas of developmental psychology that pediatricians perceive to be of potential benefit to them in their delivery of pediatric care. Results of the survey suggest that there are many ways in which developmental psychology could be in corpora ted into the pediatric curriculum. In many respects, Chapter 2 sets the stage for the remaining chapters. Nancy A. Carlson and Thomas Z."
