Dramatic Interactions in Education draws together contemporary
sociocultural research across drama and educational contents to
draw out implications for researchers and practitioners both within
and outside the field. Drama is a field for which human
interactions, experience, emotional expression, and attitude are
central, with those in non-arts fields discovering that
understandings emerging from drama education can provide models and
means for examining the affective and relational domains which are
essential for understanding learning processes. In addition to
this, those in the realm of drama education and applied theatre are
realising that sociocultural and historical-cultural approaches can
usefully inform their research and practice. Leading international
theorists and researchers from across the UK, Europe, USA and
Australia combine theoretical discussions, research methodologies,
accounts of research and applications in classroom and learning
contexts, as they explore concepts from Vygotsky's foundational
work and interrogate key concepts such as perezhivanie (or the
emotional, lived experience), development of self, zone of proximal
development.
The value of drama in the classroom for educational depth and
social unity is well known, but teachers in lower school and middle
school can sometimes struggle to find suitable play scripts for
their classes, especially smaller classes. This book offers three
inventive plays, based on classic stories (Robin Hood, The
Philosopher's Stone, The Silver Shoes) which work for small casts,
and which bring the audience into the action. Even larger classes
will enjoy the humour and creativity of the scripts.

There are thousands of students enrolled in school drama classes
and yet very often young actors cannot be heard, are culturally
encouraged to trail off at the ends of sentences, and habitually
use only the lowest pitches of the voice. Drama teachers,
frequently ask, "How can I get my students to speak up, to be
clear, to articulate?" Voice and the Young Actor is written for the
school actor, is inviting in format, language and illustration and
offers clear and inspiring instructions. The accompanying video
content features 85 mins and 28 filmed voice workshop exercises
with the author and two students. These students log their
reflections in the book on what they have learned throughout their
training and there is space for the reader to do the same. A
workbook in format, Voice and the Young Actor provides simple,
interactive vocal exercises and shows young performers how to take
voice work into acting.
In his debut essay collection, Nicholas Belardes uses today's pop
culture and self-deprecating humor as a filter for discussing
personal stories of family, writing, gender, art, and race. He
dives into the Harry Potter play and discusses his cursed childhood
home. He tells coming-of-age tales of Dungeons & Dragons and
blames Stranger Things for jogging those hilarious memories. In
great detail he describes how working for a cheesy Las Vegas
animation company meant everything to a relationship with his dad.
And he presents an unpopular artistic argument for how Tyrion
Lannister of Game of Thrones may have ruined his life as a writer
(not really). He gives you Star Wars and its weird connections to
the Catcher in the Rye (as well as artistic expectations in
education). In an essay about race he presents virtual universes,
cowboy images of his racist dad, and odd choices of identity in
Ready Player One. He even provides a layman's guide for how to
introduce someone to Star Trek while at the same time telling us
that what we mimic might not be good for us. He also discusses
miscommunication in the world in relation to writing the first
original Twitter novel, Small Places. And finally, he describes how
American numbness negatively affects the world of art. Belardes
presents a side of our humanity working in tandem with pop culture.
It isn't always pretty, though it is hopeful, sometimes funny, and
full of promise.
Inspired by the much-loved classic Ballet Shoes by Noel
Streatfeild, Into the Spotlight is a magical new story from
bestselling author and acclaimed performer Carrie Hope Fletcher.
Brilliant Aunt Maude visits seasides the world over and has become
quite the pebble collector. Pebbles of all shapes, sizes and
colours and even one that looked a bit like Elvis Presley if you
squinted a bit. Her favourite pebbles, however, are Marigold, Mabel
and Morris. One by one, and by strange and unusual ways, each child
arrives at the stage door of Brilliant Aunt Maude's theatre in the
heart of London, home to an extraordinary cast of performers.
There's Dante the miraculous magician, Petunia the storyteller and
seventy-year-old contortionists - the Fortune Sisters! But ticket
sales are dwindling and the curtains might have to close - for the
final time. Until one day, as the Pebbles are exploring the many
nooks and crannies of the theatre, they stumble upon something they
were never meant to find . . . something that just might save the
theatre after all . . .
