The Japanese Police System Today: A Comparative Study - A Comparative Study (Hardcover): L. Craig Parker The Japanese Police System Today: A Comparative Study - A Comparative Study (Hardcover)
L. Craig Parker
R4,717 Discovery Miles 47 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What role do their respective police systems play in the very different crime rates of Japan and the United States? This study draws on direct observation of Japanese police practices combined with interviews of police officials, criminal justice practitioners, legal scholars, and private citizens. It compares many Japanese police practices side by side with U.S. police practices, and places the role of the police in the broader cultural and historical Japanese framework.

Conflict, Politics and Crime - Aboriginal Communities and the Police (Paperback): Chris Cunneen Conflict, Politics and Crime - Aboriginal Communities and the Police (Paperback)
Chris Cunneen
R1,157 Discovery Miles 11 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Aboriginal people are grossly over-represented before the courts and in our gaols. Despite numerous inquiries, State and Federal, and the considerable funds spent trying to understand this phenomenon, nothing has changed. Indigenous people continue to be apprehended, sentenced, incarcerated and die in gaols. One part of this depressing and seemingly inexorable process is the behaviour of police. Drawing on research from across Australia, Chris Cunneen focuses on how police and Aboriginal people interact in urban and rural environments. He explores police history and police culture, the nature of Aboriginal offending and the prevalence of over-policing, the use of police discretion, the particular circumstances of Aboriginal youth and Aboriginal women, the experience of community policing and the key police responses to Aboriginal issues. He traces the pressures on both sides of the equation brought by new political demands. In exploring these issues, Conflict, Politics and Crime argues that changing the nature of contemporary relations between Aboriginal people and the police is a key to altering Aboriginal over-representation in the criminal justice system, and a step towards the advancement of human rights.

Peter E. Tarlow
R3,469 R3,097 Discovery Miles 30 970 Save R372 (11%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Challenges to US and Mexican Police and Tourism Stability, author Peter Tarlow examines the US-Mexico border crisis and its impact on tourism, along with tourism security in both the United States and Mexico. He also examines the impact of police corruption and cartels on the tourism industry. Presenting detailed case studies of the U.S. cities of Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Washington D.C, the collection concludes with comparisons on the issues facing tourism policing in the US and Mexico, exploring the dangers, hopes and recommendations for the future. The way a state's police force operates generates a range of complex and interconnected issues, including law enforcement's role in tourism. Recent debates have arisen around the media and law enforcement such as the incidents leading to the George Floyd protests and the Defund-the-Police movement. Challenges to US and Mexican Police and Tourism Stability examines the impacts that historical, political, and social campaigns targeting police practices have had on law enforcement in general and on the tourism industry in particular, specifically focusing on recent developments in both the USA and Mexico. The Tourism Security-Safety and Post Conflict Destinations series provides an insightful guide for policy makers, specialists and social scientists interested in the future of tourism in a society where uncertainness, anxiety and fear prevail.

Instinct Combat Shooting - Defensive Handgunning for Police, Fourth Edition (Paperback, 4th edition): Chuck Klein Instinct Combat Shooting - Defensive Handgunning for Police, Fourth Edition (Paperback, 4th edition)
Chuck Klein
R1,219 Discovery Miles 12 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While much has been written about instinct shooting with long guns, very little had been published on doing so with a handgun until this publication. Written by a pioneering author of the concept, Instinct Combat Shooting: Defensive Handgunning for Police, now in its fourth edition, is not about winning target shooting competitions, but purports surviving real-life firefights by examining testimonies of shootout survivors and carefully analyzing firefights that prove shooting instinctively is not only crucially fast, but also equally accurate. The book defines instinctive combat shooting as: "The act of operating a handgun by focusing on the target, as opposed to the sights, and instinctively coordinating the hand and mind to cause the handgun to discharge at a time and point that ensures interception of the projectile with the target." The concepts behind instinct combat shooting discussed in this book are now being integrated into some of the most progressive police academies in the United States and around the world. New chapters provide valuable material dispelling myths on indexing, laser sights, and other trick-shooting methods. Intended to help officers survive close-quarter combat conditions, Instinct Combat Shooting is an essential tool for police looking to improve their close-range shooting skills and enhance their firefight survival.

Police Responses to People with Mental Illnesses - Global Challenges (Paperback): Duncan Chappell Police Responses to People with Mental Illnesses - Global Challenges (Paperback)
Duncan Chappell
R1,700 Discovery Miles 17 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

According to the World Health Organisation during their lifetime more than one quarter of all individuals will develop one or more mental or behavioural disorders. Given prevalence data like this it is not surprising that wherever they reside on the planet many persons suffering from a mental disorder, or as is more commonly termed in popular parlance a mental illness, are likely to come into contact with police at some stage in their lives. Indeed, research conducted in a number of countries suggests that about 10 per cent of all community police work involves some form of interaction with a person with a mental illness. From a police perspective these encounters are not only frequent but also often sensitive and challenging. Despite the difficulties associated with this important aspect of community policing surprisingly scant attention has been given to the development of empirically tested and established best practice approaches to managing police interactions with persons with mental illnesses. The literature that does exist is principally derived from North American sources although more recent and interesting developments have been reported in Australia and the United Kingdom. The principal aim of Police Responses to People with Mental Illnesses is to seek to reduce this gap in the literature by providing an international overview of some of the latest research and policy developments in the field, and the challenges still to be confronted in many places in overcoming cultural and associated barriers to protecting the rights of the mentally ill. This book was originally published as a special issue of Police Practice and Research: An International Journal.

Rot at the Core - The Serious Crimes of a Detective Sergeant (Paperback): Graham Satchwell, Winston Trew Rot at the Core - The Serious Crimes of a Detective Sergeant (Paperback)
Graham Satchwell, Winston Trew
R406 R369 Discovery Miles 3 690 Save R37 (9%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In March 1972, four young black men were arrested by a specialist pickpocket squad at Oval Underground Station and charged with theft and assault of police officers. Sentenced to two years in prison, the case seemed straightforward and credible to the judge and jury who convicted them - but these young men were completely innocent, victims of endemic police corruption. The real criminal in this case was the notorious DS Derek Ridgewell, later proven to be heavily involved in organised crime. Graham Satchwell, at one time Britain's most senior railway detective, has worked with Oval Four victim Winston Trew to reveal the rotten culture that not only enabled Ridgewell to operate as he did, but also to subsequently organise major thefts of property worth in excess of GBP1 million. Winston Trew's case was finally overturned in December 2019, but the far-reaching ramifications of Ridgewell's shocking activities has irreparably damaged many lives and must never be forgotten.

Policing Citizens - Police, Power and the State (Paperback): P. A. J Waddington Policing Citizens - Police, Power and the State (Paperback)
P. A. J Waddington
R1,654 Discovery Miles 16 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This analysis of policing throughout the modern world demonstrates how many of the contentious issues surrounding the police in recent years - from paramilitarism to community policing - have their origins in the fundamentals of the police role. The author argues that this results from a fundamental tension within this role. In liberal democratic societies, police are custodians of the state's monopoly of legitimate force, yet they also wield authority over citizens who have their own set of rights.

Geoproperty - Foreign Affairs, National Security and Property Rights (Paperback): Geoff Demarest Geoproperty - Foreign Affairs, National Security and Property Rights (Paperback)
Geoff Demarest
R1,654 Discovery Miles 16 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Property is a common denominator in human conflict as well as a useful tool for international studies. In order to apply property theory as a key to the analysis of human struggle, a broad definition of the term has to be accepted. Property is more than the things people own; it is the mass of rights and duties that associate persons with things, especially land. Arrogation of property is usually the precursor to the violation of human rights, but Geoff Demarest argues that the crusade for human rights has become a chase after symptoms that ignores the calculus of violated property rights underlying most murder and theft. A better understanding of property dynamics can help us achieve strategic designs, pacific or not. He seeks to restart international studies at the point of property, and in so doing, to find a mechanism for interpreting property changes, including those brought about by new technologies.

De-Radicalisation in the UK Prevent Strategy - Security, Identity and Religion (Hardcover): M. S. Elshimi De-Radicalisation in the UK Prevent Strategy - Security, Identity and Religion (Hardcover)
M. S. Elshimi
R4,863 Discovery Miles 48 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines de-radicalisation policy in the UK and addresses the contradictions evident in the conceptualisation and practice of de-radicalisation. It explores three main themes that touch upon some of the most pressing issues of our day: security, identity and religion. Situated within the Prevent strand of the UK Counter-Terrorism policy and administered by the police through the 'Channel Programme', policymakers have promoted de-radicalisation as a vital instrument in the fight against terrorism. Despite the political and legal importance of de-radicalisation as an instrument of counter-terrorism, we continue to know very little about the programme and the profile of individuals who have been de-radicalised, as well as having little or no access to data on the programme. There is also a glaring lacuna in the wider literature regarding the concept, theory, and evidence base for de-radicalisation policies. This book addresses this lacuna and, with the use of data collected from interviews conducted with 27 practitioners, this work reveals the existence of multiple conceptions of de-radicalisation and a number of conceptual features unique to the UK context. Subsequently, the book proposes that de-radicalisation in the UK would be best conceptualised as 'technologies of the self'. Seen in this way, de-radicalisation is less about tackling terrorism and radicalisation and more about the re-configuring of citizenship, the construction of a mainstream British identity, and the promotion of certain subjectivities in an era of uncertainty about British political identity. This book will be of much interest to students of critical terrorism studies, de-radicalisation, counter-terrorism, UK politics and security studies in general.

Piracy in Southeast Asia - Trends, Hot Spots and Responses (Paperback): Carolin Liss, Ted Biggs Piracy in Southeast Asia - Trends, Hot Spots and Responses (Paperback)
Carolin Liss, Ted Biggs
R1,849 Discovery Miles 18 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book combines multi-disciplinary ethnographic and theoretical approaches to examine piracy in Southeast Asia and the regional and international responses to this threat. During the piracy boom of the early to mid-2000s, the issue of piracy in Southeast Asia received substantial academic attention. Recent scholarship, however, has shifted the focus to Somali piracy and the resurgence of piracy in Southeast Asia has largely been neglected in the academic community. This volume seeks to remedy this gap in the current literature. The primary aim is to examine how piracy has evolved in Southeast Asia over the past ten years, to address why piracy has re-emerged as a security threat, to evaluate efforts at maintaining security in regional waters, and to offer an analysis of what might be expected in the next decade. The contributions are drawn from academics, policy makers, and military officers, covering a range of disciplines including international relations, socio-cultural anthropology, security studies, history, law, and Asian studies. Taken together, the contributions in this volume provide a better understanding of contemporary piracy in Southeast Asia and suggest avenues to successfully combat piracy in this region. This book will be of much interest to students of maritime security, Asian politics, security studies, and international relations in general.

Race and Justice - Rodney King and O. J. Simpson in a House Divided (Paperback, lst ed): Jewelle Taylor Gibbs Race and Justice - Rodney King and O. J. Simpson in a House Divided (Paperback, lst ed)
Jewelle Taylor Gibbs
R775 R718 Discovery Miles 7 180 Save R57 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this thought-provoking book, psychologist and scholar Jewelle Taylor Gibbs puts the Rodney King and O. J. Simpson trials under the microscope to show that the issue of race was at the very heart of both of these emotionally charged cases. And, she observes, given the racial and ethnic composition of the members of the two juries, their verdicts were all but predictable in view of their different experiences with the police.Race and Justice reviews the turbulent events of the two so-called trials of the century and examines them from a social and political framework of race relations and police misconduct. The author points out that King and Simpson, two apparently dissimilar men, came from remarkably similar backgrounds. And she shows how their trials have linked them forever as symbols of the different worlds inhabited by blacks and whites in America. Gibbs's compelling analysis of the issues that permeated these trials will challenge even the most cynical observer to rethink any previously held assumptions about race and the criminal justice system.

It discusses the history of volunteer policing, contemporary authority, functions, and training. The book also examines part-time, auxiliary, and special constable policing roles around the globe. The text contains original research comparing British and American volunteer police, and concludes with a discussion of the future of volunteer policing in the UK and US contexts.

A Criminology of Policing and Security Frontiers (Hardcover): Randy Lippert, Kevin Walby A Criminology of Policing and Security Frontiers (Hardcover)
Randy Lippert, Kevin Walby
R1,795 Discovery Miles 17 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Policing and security provision are subjects central to criminology. Yet there are newer and neglected forms that are currently unscrutinised. By examining the work of community safety officers, ambassador patrols, conservation officers, and private police foundations, who operate on and are animated by a frontier, this book reveals why criminological inquiry must reach beyond traditional conceptual and methodological boundaries in the 21st century. Including novel case studies, this multi-disciplinary and international book assembles a rich collection of policing and security frontiers both geographical (e.g. the margins of cities) and conceptual (dispersion and credentialism) not seen or acknowledged previously.

Arming the British Police - The Great Debate (Hardcover): Roy Ingleton Arming the British Police - The Great Debate (Hardcover)

R4,863 Discovery Miles 48 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the fear of violent crime escalates, many inhabitants of the British Isles are calling for the police to carry guns. Others, however, remain strongly opposed to the concept of the police being regularly armed when on duty. In particular, they believe that the UK could follow the American example, with a horrifying increase in shootings.

Even in multicultural North America, few whites, blacks, or Hispanics have extensive experience or understanding of Asian culture. For experienced police officers, intelligence analysts, correctional officers, and prosecutors, the problems of cultural differences in behavior remain complex and problematic. This book addresses these specific law enforcement problems, and supplies law enforcement professionals with information and strategies for easier arrests, more accurate intelligence, more successful prosecutions, and fewer problems during incarceration.

In the final section, he looks at the changing experience of police life. Established as a standard introduction to the subject on its first appearance, the Second Edition has been substantially revised and is now published under the Longman imprint for the first time.

Transgender Cops - The Intersection of Gender and Sexuality Expectations in Police Cultures (Hardcover): Heather Panter Transgender Cops - The Intersection of Gender and Sexuality Expectations in Police Cultures (Hardcover)
Heather Panter
R4,251 Discovery Miles 42 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Building on comparative research in the U.K. and the U.S.A., this is the first book focused specifically on transgender experiences within policing. It examines the issues faced by the transgender community within policing and explores how gender, and the non-conformity of it, is perceived within police cultures. Moreover, it provides an on-going critique of the queer criminology movement and why it is crucial to policing studies, emphasising the specific importance of transgender issues therein. This empirical book provides qualitative data from American officers and English and Welsh constables on transgender police. The following research questions are addressed: What are the perceptions of cisgender officers towards transgender officers, and what are the consequences of these perceptions? What are the occupational experiences and perceptions of officers who identify as transgender within policing? Finally, what are the reported positive and negative administrative issues that transgender individuals face within policing? The author concludes by discussing the empirical, theoretical and policy contributions of this research and offers some final thoughts on policy recommendations and directions for future research. A strong contribution to the literature in critical criminology and queer criminology, this book will also be of interest to those in the fields of gender studies, sociology, public administration, management studies and policing studies.

The Police in Hong Kong - A Contemporary View (Paperback): Allan Y Jiao The Police in Hong Kong - A Contemporary View (Paperback)
Allan Y Jiao
R1,482 Discovery Miles 14 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Police in Hong Kong is the first comprehensive study of the Hong Kong Police Force, one of the largest police organizations in the world. Through detailed examinations of police practices and their value orientations, Professor Jiao aims to develop knowledge about policing in Hong Kong and related social, political, and cultural conditions in which the police operate. This work includes descriptions and analyses of: - the historical background of the Hong Kong Police - management of the 1997 handover of power from Britain to China - organizational structure and operation of the police force - changes and reforms of the police over the years - impact of the Bill of Rights - street police vs. management police behaviors - crime, organized crime, and vice problems - control of corruption and misconduct With an emphasis on empirical evidence, Professor Jiao relies heavily on his interviews with over 200 officers and on-site observations of a variety of police activities for the form and content of this study. As such, this work fills a void in criminal justice and police studies as well as Asian studies.

Police Ethics - The Corruption of Noble Cause (Hardcover, 4th edition): Michael Caldero, Jeffrey Dailey, Brian Withrow Police Ethics - The Corruption of Noble Cause (Hardcover, 4th edition)
Michael Caldero, Jeffrey Dailey, Brian Withrow
R6,119 Discovery Miles 61 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Police Ethics, Fourth Edition, provides an analysis of corruption in law enforcement organizations. The authors argue that the noble cause-a commitment to "doing something about bad people"-is a central "ends-based" police ethic. This fundamental principle of police ethics can paradoxically open the way to community polarization and increased violence, however, when officers violate the law on behalf of personally held moral values. This book is about the power that police use to do their work and how it can lead police to abuse their positions at the individual and organizational levels. It provides students of policing with a realistic understanding of the kinds of problems they will confront in the practice of police work. This timely new edition offers police administrators direction for developing agency-wide corruption prevention strategies, and a re-written chapter further expands our level of understanding of corruption by covering the Model of Circumstantial Corruptibility in detail. The fourth edition also discusses critical ethical issues relating to the relationship between police departments and minority communities, including Black Lives Matter and other activist groups. In the post-Ferguson environment, this is a crucial text for students, academicians, and law enforcement professionals alike.
