Policy determines much of what nurses actually do on a daily basis, which means it is essential for nurses to engage with policy if they are to understand their own practice. Mental health nursing in particular has been shaped by a variety of policy factors in the past fifty years. In this new textbook, edited by the mental health advisor to the Royal College of Nursing, a range of experts in their field introduce the essential elements of mental health policy to students and experienced practitioners. The book covers a broad range of areas, including settings for care and the historical context, policy affecting various diagnoses and service user groups, and how policy is translated into action. Clinical examples are drawn on throughout, to help students think about the real-life context of what can be a difficult subject. It will be essential reading for pre-registration mental health nursing students, and valuable to those working in practice who want to gain an understanding of policy.
An unprecedented insight into the approach used by the innovative Suicide Crisis charity, a crisis centre that has so far achieved a zero suicide rate amongst their clients. This book explains their ethos, how they work and the ways in which their services operate. The idea for the service grew out of the author's own lived experience of suicidal crisis, and her inability to find the right kind of help. This experience provides an understanding and awareness of what suicidal clients go through and the kind of help they require, and the success rate of the charity proves that the techniques used are effective. Covering relationship-building, providing intensive support, achieving a balance between protecting clients and giving them control, engaging high-risk men least likely to seek help, assessing risk accurately and more, this groundbreaking approach provides what is needed to save lives of people in suicidal crisis.
This book presents an integrated approach for concurrently treating chronic pain and opioid use. Many patients who suffer from chronic pain are also managing opioid medications. Because this population often requires a higher level of care, it is critical for providers to address pain and opioid management together. This book presents an integrated healthcare team approach that helps patients manage opioid use in a structured, safe, and supportive environment while also exploring all of the factors that impact the patients' pain experience. This whole-person approach to care allows for cross-cutting strategies to be applied and maximizes the reduction of suffering. The behavioral treatment strategies in this book can help providers assist patients who are struggling with chronic pain and have relied on opioids at one point. This includes individuals that are considering de-prescribing, are in the process of opioid tapering, have recently discontinued from opioids, or are currently using opioids effectively for pain. Combining expert clinical guidance with the latest research and practical case examples, the book helps practitioners across healthcare disciplines understand their patients, improve rapport and engagement, and implement treatment strategies to help patients live their best lives.
A complete guide to an innovative, research-based brief treatment specifically developed for service members and veterans, this book combines clinical wisdom and in-depth knowledge of military culture. Adaptive disclosure is designed to help those struggling in the aftermath of traumatic war-zone experiences, including life threat, traumatic loss, and moral injury, the violation of closely held beliefs or codes. Detailed guidelines are provided for assessing clients and delivering individualized interventions that integrate emotion-focused experiential strategies with elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Reproducible handouts can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.
Personality Disorder offers a comprehensive and accessible collection of papers that will be practically useful to practitioners working in secure and non-secure settings with patients who have personality disorders. This book brings together fourteen classic papers, which address the impact that working with personality disorder patients can have on staff. It also offers theoretical explanations for personality disorder, and explores other issues such as the concept of boundaries in clinical practice, psychiatric staff as attachment figures and the relationship between severity of personality disorder and childhood experiences. Each paper is introduced with contextual material, and is followed by a series of questions that are intended to be used as educational exercises. This book will be essential reading for clinical and forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses, social workers and students.
Clinical Supervision in Mental Health Nursing Graham Sloan Clinical supervision plays an important part in nurse training, and supervisors have a line-management role to play. This involves controlling the agenda of the supervision, using supervision as a therapeutic tool, giving and receiving over client-related issues and other issues arising during training. Nursing research has focused on evaluating the effectiveness of clinical supervision, but there remains uncertainty as to what facets of clinical supervision are potent in realising effectiveness. This book reports on an investigation on the practice of clinical supervision in mental health nursing. Incorporating three case studies, it illuminates the reciprocal interactions between clinical supervisor and supervisee. While the book uncovers a number of limitations in the process of clinical supervision and gaps in mental health nurses' level of competence in interpersonal relations it provides a basis for a more critical approach to this important element of professional development.
Written by experts in the growing field of forensic mental health care, this book explores current and emerging interventions in forensic nursing and the care of the mentally disordered offender, with an emphasis on clinical practice and clinical competence. It explores the practical issues facing forensic nurses, such as environment and safety issues, as well as the possible emotional trauma of such a role. It examines a range of intervention strategies, such as exercise, which has often been used as an occupational time-filler, but also offers real therapeutic benefits. The contributors cover a range of diverse perspectives from the care of women in secure services, severely assaultive patients and sex offenders, the role of inpatient therapy and nurse therapists and the importance of spiritual nursing and educational interventions. The book also examines the client group itself and considers new roles for nurses in the light of recent research. The contributors to this volume take a wide-ranging approach, providing a comprehensive overview of current and future therapeutic interventions for forensic mental health care. Therapeutic Interventions for Forensic Mental Health Nurses is essential reading for all practitioners, nurses and educators in the forensic nursing field.
Mental health nursing has always been susceptible to modification due to, for example, new treatments and changing demands by society. This timely book examines the current status of mental health nursing and the role that this discipline plays in the social control of the 'mad'.Controversially, the author recommends that mental health nursing should exploit its social control function by re-establishing its traditional allegiance to medical psychiatry. However, the author suggests also that a minority of mental health nurses may wish to become part of a radical force aimed at achieving genuine empowerment for the mentally disordered.
