This text is an accessible and clinically practical guide to
medicines management in mental health for all student nurses and
professionals. Making the topic manageable and understandable at
undergraduate nurse level, it also encourages a growing
understanding beyond this in professional practice too. A wide
range of mental health conditions are covered, along with how
medication can be used to manage these conditions, how the drugs
work and how they should be given. Exploring the legal aspects and
ethical issues around medication management in mental health, it
also discusses other concepts such as medicines adherence and the
therapeutic alliance. The book uses straight-forward language to
help the reader master the key concepts and how to apply them to
clinical practice. It features: * Drug calculations and multiple
choice questions to help you assess your learning * Key learning
points to sum up each chapter * Patient case studies across a range
of mental health disorders * References and suggested reading to
help take your knowledge and learning further The book places an
emphasis on applying underpinning pharmacological principles to
clinical practice and is useful to all nurses who work with
patients who have a mental health disorder. "A knowledge and
understanding of medicines and medication management is a
fundamental aspect of the role of the mental health nurse. The
author succeeds in her aim of providing of both a basic knowledge
of the subject area, and an understanding of how the principles of
psychopharmacology and medicines management are applied to clinical
practice and the role of the nurse. The book has an excellent
structure, each chapter beginning with clear learning objectives,
and ending with a summary of key learning points; multiple choice
questions, and a case study, where relevant. The text is written in
an accessible style; specific chapters, for example, chapter 5
"Anatomy and physiology of the brain", having clear diagrams that
facilitate the reader's ability to understand both basic
physiology, and the principles of neurotransmission, etc. The role
of the therapeutic alliance is helpfully acknowledged when
promoting adherence and concordance, whilst the key medications
prescribed for the specified disorders, and the associated
psychopharmacology, are clearly described. "I would consider the
publication as being essential reading for any undergraduate mental
health nurse; the text also being a valuable learning resource in
the development of curriculum content." Mark James, Senior Lecturer
in Community Mental Health Nursing, University of South Wales, UK
"I'm delighted to recommend this new, welcome and accessible
resource: an excellent book with much to offer student and
registered mental health nurses and nurse educators, in promoting
safe and effective practice in medicines management. With an easy
to understand style, Deborah Robertson provides a helpful overview
of the legal and professional context, a practical introduction to
undertaking drug calculations, and considers the complex issues
around practical strategies for optimising adherence and patient
outcomes. Complementing recommended non-pharmacological
interventions for well-known mental health disorders, this book
offers a refreshing perspective and special focus upon
pharmacological treatment options, clearly explaining the use of
specific medications, their main modes of action, effects and side
effects, and recommendations for monitoring outcomes. In
particular, this book offers the reader a very good grounding in
understanding the pathophysiology and pharmacological treatment of
mental health disorders, providing materials and highlighting
further resources for use when working with the patient or service
user, whether providing education, involving them in
decision-making about medication taking, or actively monitoring
outcomes. Another valuable feature is that the reader is encouraged
to consolidate their learning through a series of reflective case
studies that focus upon recognising need and treatment planning,
and end of chapter multiple choice and numeracy questions." John
Butler Senior Lecturer in Mental Health, University of Central
Lancashire, UK "This book comprehensively addresses all the major
psychotropic drugs a mental health nurse will encounter when
undertaking medicines interventions. Each mental health diagnosis
is explored and the related prescribed medicines covered in depth.
I would recommend this book for use as a core text book in
undergraduate studies, registered nurses who want to increase their
knowledge base and for non-medical prescribing students as a
baseline source to learn about the psychopharmacology of drugs they
will prescribe." Steve Hemingway, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health,
The University of Huddersfield, UK

assistants.
Working in any area of mental health nursing presents complex
issues regarding the nurse-patient relationship. For those working
in prolonged clinical contact with offenders, relationships with
patients and colleagues can be particularly emotionally intense and
sometimes difficult to express. This book attempts to understand
and articulate the emotional labour of forensic nursing and
explores the challenge of establishing and maintaining therapeutic
relationships with offenders. The first book to consider the
emotional and relational component of forensic mental health
nursing, the chapters cover a number of specialist forensic areas
from this psychodynamic perspective, such as women's services,
services for people with personality disorders, intensive care,
high security psychiatric hospitals, medium secure units and
services for adolescent offenders. A chapter on therapeutic
communities is also included, along with chapters on challenging
relational phenomena such as working with hate and the difficulties
of managing difference when working in environments that produce
high levels of anxiety. Therapeutic Relationships with Offenders
provides essential information for mental health nurses working in
the forensic field and will be of interest to any professionals
working with challenging populations and people with personality
disorders.
Personality Disorder offers a comprehensive and accessible
collection of papers that will be practically useful to
practitioners working in secure and non-secure settings with
patients who have personality disorders. This book brings together
fourteen classic papers, which address the impact that working with
personality disorder patients can have on staff. It also offers
theoretical explanations for personality disorder, and explores
other issues such as the concept of boundaries in clinical
practice, psychiatric staff as attachment figures and the
relationship between severity of personality disorder and childhood
experiences. Each paper is introduced with contextual material, and
is followed by a series of questions that are intended to be used
as educational exercises. This book will be essential reading for
clinical and forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, community
psychiatric nurses, social workers and students.

Most specialist mental health care is provided by nurses who use
face to face helping skills with a wide range of people in a
variety of contexts. This book puts therapeutic skills at the heart
of the nurse's role, with one central aim: to equip you with
knowledge to use in your practice, thus improving your ability to
deliver care. This book: * Will enable you to strengthen your core
therapeutic skills and broaden your knowledge to include other
practical therapeutic approaches * Collates in one place
information on a range of therapeutic approaches, from person
centred counselling, motivational interviewing and solution focused
approaches, through to day to day skills of challenging unhelpful
thoughts, de-escalating difficult situations, working with
families, and problem solving * Demonstrates application of theory
to practice through a variety of practical examples * Features
reader activities to facilitate personal growth and learning *
Includes a chapter exploring clinical supervision and how this
makes practice more effective Each chapter is grounded in authentic
clinical experiences and focuses on equipping the reader to develop
confidence in their client facing skills. This text is an essential
purchase for all mental health nurse students as well as qualified
nurses. "Whilst the essential therapeutic component of mental
health nursing is the nurse themselves, it is also essential that
they have knowledge and competencies to offer the client. This
valuable book offers the reader an introduction to a wide range of
approaches that are considered helpful, evidence based and
effective. Modern mental health nursing requires much of its
practitioners; this book will help inform and support that
endeavour." Ian Hulatt, Mental Health Adviser, Royal College of
Nursing, UK "This is a timely book which addresses, head on,
questions about what mental health nurses can do to be effective
with their patients. At last we have a book that mental health
nurses can draw on to understand why and how various therapeutic
approaches are used. The range is from cognitive behavioural
therapy, to psychodynamic approaches to mindfulness, with others in
between. Each chapter is written by an expert and each offers
concrete examples of what it involved in each of the approaches.
These examples are imperative if readers are to understand how to
use interventions in their everyday work. This ground breaking book
will be compulsory reading for everyone involved in the care of
those with mental health problems. A wonderful book." Philip
Burnard, Emeritus Professor of Nursing, Cardiff University, UK
Assessment is an essential part of mental-health nursing and as
such a core learning requirement for pre-registration nursing
students. Getting assessment right is essential for the nursing
student in order for them to become an effective practitioner. Many
books on assessment are very theoretical. This is a practical,
hands-on guide to the assessment process, underpinned by the latest
evidence. The book explains the core principles through running
case studies, so that readers can see how each decision they make
impacts on the person in their care. Key features: Assessment
principles are applied across a variety of modern nursing settings
that you may find yourself working in as a registered nurse Each
chapter is linked to the relevant NMC standards and Essential
Skills Clusters so you know you are meeting the professional
requirements Activities throughout help you to think critically and
develop essential graduate skills.
In order to give high quality care it is essential that mental
health nurses have a solid grasp of the most common therapies and
interventions used in mental healthcare. If nurses understand what
the various interventions involve then they will be much better
equipped to support patients through their recovery. This is a
practical, engaging introduction to the major psychosocial
interventions that demonstrates to students what the interventions
are, why they are important and how they can be used.
Key features
- Interactive approach through realistic case studies that show
how interventions can work to promote recovery
- A patient centred approach considers the social as well as
psychological aspects of mental healthcare
- Each chapter is mapped to the relevant NMC standards and
Essential Skills Clusters so that readers can see how they are
meeting their professional requirements
- Activities throughout challenge the reader to think critically
and develop graduate skills
Being able to engage with service users and communicate effectively
is a fundamental skill identified by the NMC and required of all
mental health nurses. The reality is that building rapport and
developing therapeutic relationships does not come instinctively
for everyone. The authors have responded to this with a book that
explains the different communication theories and models and goes
on to show students how they work in the real world. Innovative
exercises encourage reflection and enable students to practice
their developing communication skills as they progress. Throughout
the book the authors are focussed on promoting recovery and have
put the service user at the centre of the discussion, ensuring that
their voice is heard. Key features: - Covers the communication
content of the new NMC Standards and Essential Skills Clusters for
pre-registration degree-level nursing education - Focussed on
promoting recovery and adopts a person-centred approach -
Interactive style using realistic scenarios and case studies making
theory easy to apply to practice - Includes a chapter co-authored
by a service user offering a unique insight.
Mental health nursing students need to understand their legal
duties towards all clients, including specific laws for care of
detained patients. Yet these laws can be comples, confusing, and
difficult to relate to the reality of nursing care. This book is a
clear guide to the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice which
explains the specific duties, responsibilities and powers of mental
health nurses and the care of detained patients in particular. It
explains the most frequently encountered parts of the Act and Code
and clarifies common misunderstandings. It outlines dilemmas faced
by nurses which may arise from possible conflicting
responsibilities. It also gives an introduction to other major
legal considerations that mental health nursing students need.
Key features: Specific guide to the law for mental health
nursing students, written by experienced practitioners involved in
MHA regulation in England Case studies and examples help the reader
relate the law to their clinical practice Multiple choice questions
and acticvities help students to develop confidence and become
critical and independent learners Linked to relevant NMC Standards
and ESCs for degree-level education.
Recent conceptualization of anxiety, depressive, and related
"emotional" disorders emphasize their similarities rather than
their differences. In response, there has been a movement in recent
years away from traditional disorder-specific manuals for the
treatment of these disorders and toward treatment approaches that
focus on addressing psychological processes that appear to cut
across disorders. These "transdiagnostic" evidence-based treatments
may prove to be more cost efficient and have the potential to
increase availability of evidence-based treatments to meet a
significant public health need. Among clinicians, the Unified
Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP),
developed by Dr. David Barlow and colleagues, is the most
recognizable and widely used transdiagnostic treatment protocol
with empirical support for its use. Applications of the Unified
Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders
provides clinicians with a "how to" guide for using the UP to treat
a broad range of commonly encountered psychological disorders in
adults. Each chapter covers a specific anxiety, depressive, or
related "emotional" disorder, and important transdiagnostic
processes are highlighted and discussed in relation to treatment.
Case studies are employed throughout to illustrate the real-world
application of this unique cognitive behavioral protocol and to
instruct clinicians in the nuts and bolts of assessment, case
formulation, and treatment in accordance with a transdiagnostic
perspective.
Neuropsychiatric problems after critical illness are receiving
increasing attention, particularly in the critical care medicine
literature, but mental health and primary care clinicians should
also be interested in these common problems, given the growing
number of critical illness survivors who need care. Patients
frequently come out of the intensive care unit (ICU) with
horrifying distorted memories and don't understand what has
happened to them. Not only are patients debilitated with
ICU-acquired weakness and cognitive impairment, they are
traumatized by actual experiences (e.g., shortness of breath and
pain) and distorted memories (of being tortured, raped, assaulted,
or imprisoned) shaped by delirium. Patients' family members are
also frequently quite distressed, and children surviving critical
illnesses appear to have similar experiences to adults. This book
provides an overview of the nature and epidemiology of cognitive
and other psychiatric problems in this growing population, and it
addresses the small but growing literature on prevention and early
intervention efforts. Addressing these problems successfully will
require collaborative interventions, both in-ICU and post-ICU.
Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders aims to engage young
caregivers in psychiatry, psychology, nursing and social work so
that they will be able to become well informed about this
significant-and at times confusing-illness. Because schizophrenia
is considered to be one of the most complicated and severe
psychiatric disorders, this book has the goal of summarizing key
issues of the illness, such as its presentation, frequency and age
of onset, and diagnostic characteristics. It also contains
informative chapters about the pathophysiology of schizophrenia,
ranging from brain development issues, genetics, and likely
abnormalities in neurotransmitters. This book will give young
professionals and those joining the field an excellent and
accessible background to treatment. In this area, Schizophrenia and
Psychotic Spectrum Disorders provides a comprehensive approach to
diagnosis, treatment initiation, strategies for non-response,
approaches of therapy, and importantly, ways to provide family
therapy and support.
This fascinating book provides a comprehensive overview of the
extensive post-disaster mental health recovery program implemented
after the 1988 Armenian earthquake. Covering the program's
evolution, from the initial acute phase of clinical fieldwork, to
its expansion as a three-year teaching and training program for
local therapists, to the building of mental health clinics in
devastated cities. Featuring poignant memoirs detailing the daily
challenges and rewards of working in the trenches, the book
presents a conceptual framework that can guide post-disaster
clinical and research efforts, lessons learned from this work and
other disasters, and highlights recent advances in disaster
psychiatry. This school-based intervention program has informed
subsequent disaster response efforts in many countries and has
provided clinically relevant cutting-edge research findings from
longitudinal and treatment outcomes studies conducted over 25
years. Essential reading for psychologists, psychiatrists, social
workers and other mental health professionals and those working for
relief organizations following disasters.
With growing access to health information, people who suffer from
depression are increasingly eager to play an active role in the
management of their symptoms. The goal of self-management is to
support patients in monitoring and managing their symptoms and
provide them with additional resources to promote recovery, enhance
quality of life, and prevent relapse. For clinicians,
self-management holds promise for improving practice efficiency and
efficacy by helping patients maximize their improvement outside of
treatment sessions. Self-Management of Depression is written for
clinicians who wish to empower their patients to take more active
steps to manage depression. Chapters cover care management,
self-assessment, exercise, self-help books and computer programs,
meditation, and peer-support groups and strategies for how to
incorporate self-management into a treatment plan are described.
Reproducible handouts to support patients are also available
online. This book is relevant to clinical psychologists,
psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers and primary care
physicians.
